day number three where temperatures failed to get out of the 20s. if the sun comes out and melts things up, anything that's liquid could refreeze quickly and things will get slippery. we haven't had to do the penguin walk in a couple years. you can see the snow showers out of here and quieter conditions. we have more snow on the way tomorrow. that storm system taking shape out towards chicago. i'll have more details on that. let's be concerned with today. 29 daytime high. still cold and breezy . winds north and west, 30. >> okay. i was distracted cause right in the middle tony goes like this to me but i didn't know what he wanted. sorry about that. >> you had some of my scripts. >> lighting up around here but some are still dealing with slick conditions on the roads. >> melanie alnwick is live outside now braving the winter weather as you've been reporting it's been getting better.

melanie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, tony. yeah, i'm actually kind of surprised there's some little granular stuff still coming down. we've been out here over four hours now and we're still seeing it coming down. as you can see, we have a mom and a baby coming right here. can i talk to you real quick? >> my english not so good. >> how's the sidewalk? >> good. >> you enjoying the weather? >> yes. >> a lot of people out enjoying the weather. this is one of the things we're talking about. we have a baby stroller across the way some parts of the sidewalks have been treated. where they have been treated. they are great. just wet and not a lot of problems. but monitoring what's been going on out on the roadways. metro is reporting in northern virginia.

9:04 am
two hour delay. they are going to have to at some point get dressed and head out to school. the best i can say is it looks like this is going to stick around for a little while. if we do get that second round of snow or so we got a nice base here starting to pack up this weekend. >> sledding this weekend. all right. thank you so much. and remember you can track the weather where you live. share your snow photos and more with the fox 5 weather app. download it on droid, ipad, iphone. search for dc weather in the app store. >> the latest on traffic. there are problems out there. julie wright has that . >> problems and late delays. some of the school s in montgomery went on a two hour delay. rush hour is happening as we speak. i wanted to pul up one of the bridges for you. the bridges, ramps and overpasses freeze before

9:06 am
rate has dropped to a five year low. that is a hopeful sign for the job market. weekly unemployment applications fell by 5,000 to about 330,000. that's the fewest since january 2008. the overall job less rate is 7.8% right now in the united states. and the house passes a bill to let the government borrow enough money to keep it going for four months. the vote defuses a crisis that was looming next month and sets the stage for a debate in the spring over taxes, spending and the deficit. some republicans refused to vote for the measure but senate leader harry reed says the senate will move quickly to approve that legislation. our big story this morning, a ground breaking announcement from the pentagon allowing military women to fight on the front lines. the official announcement from defense secretary is expected today. the move overturns a two decade old rule banning women from

9:08 am
quite frank she did let her emotions fly at one point getting very upset. when she had to stand there and receive the bodies. how would you characterize her appearance yesterday? >> she did get emotional because she knew chris stevens, the ambassador who got killed. he was quite an impressive diplomate. spoke fluent arabic. being a u.s. diplomate in hot zones involves danger. and there's a risk that one takes. probably no different than a foreign corespondent takes. if you are going to represent the united states in these countries you have to be there and on the ground. you can't do it from a far. and that's a point that

hillary clinton tried to make yesterday. i think the emotion you saw was the fact she knew the people who got killed. >> let's take a listen to just a little bit of that and you can hear what we were talking about. this is secretary clinton. >> i stood next to president obama as the marines carried those flag draped caskets off the plane at andrews. i put my arms around the mothers and fathers, the sisters and brothers, the sons and daughters and the wives left alone. >> what difference does it make the information we had at first? bottom line is americans came home in body bags. how much does it matter what was known and the information that was given out in the days after the attack? >> well, you know, they did a review state department conducted its own independent review of what happened in

benghazi called the accountability review board. and they did a very exhaustive study of what happened. now, i can tell you that when these kind of incidents happen, it's very chaotic. there's a great fog of war to use a cliche. but what you have at least on capitol hill is a group of critics of secretary clinton trying to get very very black and white answers for a situation that is far from black and white. it's very mirky. my own feeling is that nothing new came out from that hearing. but what the constant attacks on hillary clinton from republicans tells me that republicans see her as a threat, political threat in 2016 and they are trying to bang up her image as much as they can going into that. and i'm sure
9:11 am
that the clip of hillary clinton saying what difference does it make where she gets angry at one of the republican senators will probably become part of a political ad. >> there's much to ask you. i'm trying to get to the bulk of this. secretary clinton said the state department is in the process of putting out or implementing 29 recommendations to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again. is there a way to protect people who take on jobs like this in foreign countries especially the middle east? >> at the end of the day, the security of any american diplomates in any country is the responsibility of the host country. now, what happened in libya was that there was no real government army to protect them. they were relying on a local militia. that was the best they could do.
9:12 am
american diplomacy involves risk. there will be conditions and recommendations to improve security. what you have to remember is the more a diplomate gets closed off behind security from the people they need to be talking to, the poorer job they are going to do as diplomates. >> senior editor national security at role call. come back and talk to us. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. coming up in just a little bit, need digital storage? how about using your dna. the unique discovery just ahead. and where they are not sitting too long is bad for your health. dave? >> i'm standing up, tony. so much to get to this morning. tails of catfishing and pick in multiple sports. why the afc title came cost tom brady serious cast.
