>> i'm tony perkins. there is a lot going on concerning the weather this morning. we haven't had that much snow, but it's really impacted things. school closings and delays. those are scrolling along the bottom of your screen. >> a pair of accidents in the northbound lanes of gw parkway involve as many as 10 vehicles. no serious injuries, though. >> dulles toll road is jammed heading to d.c. in fact, traffic is backing up all the way to the dulles greenway. my goodness. if you're familiar with that road, it's out past dulles airport. >> also heard of numerous fender-benders in montgomery county. one accident brought a utility pole down. this was at turkeyfoot road coming out of gaithersburg. take your time if you n. >> if that traffic jam is true

from the tolls out to the toll way, greenway, that's crazy. you told us this was coming. the fear was, it's coming during morning rush hour. >> temperatures overnight in the 20s, and obviously not a good combination with the snow. and doesn't take a lot to cause a lot of problems when it comes to snow. couple of flurries at this point. the trend will be to get the snow out of here shortly. most of that should be across the bay in the next hour or so. should break out in sunshine. breezy and cold this afternoon. it's important you know that. cold this afternoon. current temperature at reagan national, 30 degrees. that's it. where we've had accumulating snow, will stick around later today. 26 at dulles. 28 bwi marshall. there's your advisory. in effect until 10:00 this morning. winter weather advisory for the

counties in close. would not be surprised if they let this go shortly. snow showers transitioning to sunshine and a lot of wind. winds out of the north and west gusting to 25. won't feel like 35 with the winds. total accumulations, i haven't seen more than a half inch so far. half inch at dulles. it's possible a few spots could get up to an inch. guess what? few more flakes in the forecast. maybe more than a few saturday night and sunday, another clipper system approaching. details on that in just a minute. tucker, thank you very much. our big story continues to be the breaking news overseas. an explosion at the u.s. embassy in turkey's capital. two people were killed, at least another wounded. >> emergency vehicles remain near the embassy at this time. the u.s. ambassador to turkey says a guard at the embassy gate was killed in addition to the bomber. the explosion did not appear to do damage inside the embassy. the compound is located in the

same neighborhood as the french, german and several other embassies. also breaking this morning out of new york, where former new york mayor ed koch has died from congestive heart failure. he had been in intensive care since wednesday, suffering from fluid in his lungs and legs. koch served as mayor for three terms from 1978 through 1989. he is credited with saving the city from financial ruin. ed koch was 88 years old. checking our other top stories, former culpeper police officer heads back to court this morning, where a judge will decide whether to declare a mistrial in his case. daniel harmon wright was convicted earlier this week of killing an unarmed woman last year. his attorneys claim the jurors used a dictionary to help them define the word "malice." they say that shows the jurors were confused about instructions given to them.

the hostage situation in alabama enters its fourth day now. a man has been holding a 5-year- old boy since tuesday afternoon. neighbors identify the captor as 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes. police say he and the boy are in an underground bunker equipped with a tv and electricity. the boy's mother says the child has asperger's syndrome and hdhd. police are getting medicine to the boy through a pipe. metro issues a public apology for wednesday evening's gridlock on the green line. thousands were stranded. the agency says there were problems with a piece of equipment and a human error when crews tried to fix it. the power outage was the result of an emergency button being hit. metro apologized to customers for having to wait so long for the problem to be fixed.

bit. especially when it gets to postseason. ray rice, a good dose of him sunday as well. today will be an interesting day. it's a joint press conference for the first time ever with the two brothers, jim and john harbaugh. john talked about the distractions and the press conference. >> i think they've done a great job of compartmentalizing. they've done well with that and focused on the football and i'm proud with the way they've handled the media as well. as far as the joint press conference tomorrow. we thought we would switch and i would come dressed as jim and jim would come dressed as me, see if you could figure it out. >> i think we'd be able to figure out which is which, out of the two brothers. will be an interesting show later today. i understand we have special guests getting ready to join us? >> we do, as a matter of fact. >> it's an exciting day for redskins' fans. i don't think many fans are as -- >> ravens' fans. >> right. so hard wired.

they cost billions of dollars,over in the blink of an eye. why do so many companies spend so much on ads during the super bowl? here to address that and look at some of the commercials is anthony pappas with the pappas group advertising agency. thank you for coming in. good to have you here. >> thank you for having me. >> i always say the dilemma is when do you take a break? because you want to stay during the game, and you want to stay during the ads. obviously they spend a lot of money, because a lot of eyes are on them. >> absolutely. there's five, six, seven days of eyeballs on this. 9million views potentially on some of them. the amount of money is a great investment over a longer period of time. >> you make a great point, because this isn't how it used to be, but now, they get multiple views with the internet and all of that. >> absolutely. with people on screens and

devices. no longer 30 sec spots, minute, minute and a half, mini stories. people like the entertainment factor. >> some companies preview their ads online. does that benefit them? >> absolutely. to have your ad being spoken about, a week or two, and sometimes in one of our client's case, a month, that investment, you can't actually pay for. >> let's jump in. we have several we want to show. the ad so far that's attracted the most attention is for volkswagen. apparently some people were upset about it. >> i hate mondays. >> yeah, those are the worst. >> no worries, man. everything will be all right. yeah, man. sticky bun come soon, don't worry. yeah. wicked coffee, mr. jim. julia, turn the frown the other way around. >> you're from minnesota,

let's take a look. ♪ >> this one, it's kind of a parody of different movies genres in a way. >> what they're trying to do is create content that takes you online. it's trying to engage the audience. they did that last year with the polar bears and was successful. at the end of this, you decide, the audience decides who they want to win. >> later in the game we'll see the winner? >> yeah, at the end of the game they show the winner. and when you get online, they create a content where you can sabotage the racers. they've made it more engaging online than just watching the

video. >> very interesting. interactive. doritos, they're also going interactive, in that they had a contest. i think they did this before, where amateurs can submit. >> absolutely. doritos does the crashing the super bowl. they have users submit great stories. this year they put out five videos in the pregame. and you'll get to decide which ones get to be in the super bowl and you'll get to vote. >> let's look at one of the amateur created ads. >> can you play with me? >> sweetheart, i'd love to. but the guys are outside waiting for me. >> i have doritos. >> steve, what is the holdup? ♪ >> it's all about the comedy. it really is. >> it is. this year you're seeing the trend around life moments. something vw did a couple of years ago. they want family, funny, wholesome. something that's emotionally that you can resonate with. >> very good. those are the dorito ads.

audi, i've not seen this one yet. >> in audi spot is one of my favorites. it's about a boy in high school going to the prom. his dad gives him the vehicle, but he's going by himself. and he's sort of a little upset. at the moment he gets in the vehicle, he says, you know what, i'm going to do this. he gets into the prom, and you'll see what happens. >> let's take a look. >> look at you. so dashing. come on. nowadays lots of people go by themselves. >> no, they don't. >> hey, son. have fun tonight. ♪ ♪ back against the wall ♪

government borrowing money. it's called the no budget no pay bill that requires lawmakers to pass a budget or their paychecks will be withheld. the white house says president obama will immediately sign it. the january jobless numbers are out. and there's good news. bad news, too. first, the unemployment rate for december was revised up to 7.9%. but january's numbers show no change. the government says 157,000 jobs were added last month and hiring was stronger than first thought over the past couple of years. while the economy continues to sputter, the job market held steady with january unemployment at 7.9%. beyonce breaks her silence. hear her response to criticism over the inauguration lip-synch flap. >> but first, wisdom is checking out new rides. >> reporter: all right, tony and allison, get your motor

award. never wrote legislation, never ran a city nor a company. what she did do and well is serve as the leader of my family. i lost my grandmother this week. i enjoyed years of her love and attention. we were close. i spent every summer with my grandparents and their beloved home city of charleston ton, south carolina. those were simple and wonderful days. through the years our families grew and our lives got busier, but our bond remained strong. as i navigated my adult life and my own family, i always relied on granny's advice, her humor, and take on things. she's making me laugh in this picture, when i'm pregnant with sidney. she came from a time where ladies wore gloves and hats to church. always had finger foods at the ready when company came. and made sure the family all sat down and ate that good low

country food with that sweet iced tea together. she liked high heels and dancing the jitter bug with my grandfather. tradition, style, etiquette, pose, being a lady, i all learned from her. though she looked like a delicate flower, at under 5 feet tall, she was tough and independent. she reinvented herself when my granddad died. she always worked, but learned to drive in her 60s. maintained her big yard by herself well into her 70s and lived alone until her mid-80s. i am so grateful that she saw my girls be born and grow. while i'll never know why fate robbed some of our loved ones of their memories, i know that if you are lucky, you have a lifetime full of good times to keep you company in those darker days. the tear in my heart created by her passing on tuesday might never close, but i will use the lessons and the love that she

gave me to patch it up just a little bit. but i will miss her sweetness and her style every day. granny, i know that you are proud of me and i hope i told you at least once that i am proud of you, too. rest well.
