>> thanks, tucker. the big story, two suitland high school students gunned down within a 24 hour period. >> six students have been killed since the start of the school year. the county is taking steps. melanie alnwick is live. >> reporter: good morning, tony. the superintendent of public school rz is spending today meeting with his school security team and there is now a county wide task force that is trying to deal with the issue of violence and these teenagers in the community now that it's taken the lives of six students. the community is reeling. it was about 5:30 tuesday when prince georges county police went to investigate another shooting. this time on the 3700 block of donell drive in forestville. two young men both

18 years old shot in a parking lot. one in grave condition. the other pronounced dead at the hospital was in 29th grade. that is the same as charles walker. the suitland high school freshman shot and killed at 4:20 monday on 28th avenue in hill crest heights. police did say they believe robbery was the motive in that case. was carrying a pair of boots. community leaders are working to combat a culture of violence. >> sad. sad atmosphere. people was crying. nobody was going to class. administrators everywhere. real crazy. two days in a row somebody died. we're only teenagers. >> cleary we need to do more to reach out to our young people and folks out there. that's why we started the transforming initiative. it's about providing a wholistic approach. that's why you can't have a program that lasts for a month

or a week. got to be there until we see changes. young people need jobs. need health insurance. focus on where they are going to go. and that's what we have to provide to stop what's going on out there. >> and the principal did tell us yesterday they are working to continue to reinforce a positive message to the students here. police are telling us there is no indication that the two murders of these high school students are connected. however, some neighbors in the area did tell us they believe the boys new each other. going to be a few more questions coming up and we're going to continue to follow this throughout the day. back to you guys. >> just awful. thank you, melanie. also a late night shooting leaves one man dead and another in custody. police say the victim was a 30-year-old man. he was shot just before 11:00 tuesday night in temple hills.

>> salt and pepper is here to help us with soups that are good for your heart. >> for your heart and tasty. >> flavor first. >> this is chef brian, chef tea. they are known as salt and pepper. it's always good to he so you guys. >> always a pleasure. >> the challenge is heart healthy but yet tasty. we brought two. let's start with what you brought. >> my dish is a chicken tortilla soup. you eat chicken. it's very good for you. this is the simplest soup you are ever going to see. the hardest thing to do or the most difficult thing is cooking the chicken. really not that big of deal. what i did is took chicken tenders, not the breasts. sliced it up real thin and used this south western seasoning you can get at your whole foods. >> we should say salt and

pepper is sponsored by whole foods market. >> and i cook that in a pan. i didn't drain the greece. there's not that much. i didn't add any. cook the chicken in there. and add chicken stock. and brought that up to a boil. then you add in black beans and some of this diced tomatoes. these are roasted already in here. you can get some with seasoning in there. >> they are organic. >> very organic. >> i love it. i love it. >> and frozen corn and bring that up to a boil and let it similarer and you are done. >> chef ryan. here's my thing with soup. it takes all day to get it right. >> no. >> no. >> okay. good. it's always so delicious the next day when it's simmered down. >> you can let it similarer. you can put this on in the morning. especially if you are having a bunch of people over. you can create it before the

dinner, let it similarer on the stove. let all those juices and flavors together. >> you are going to finish doing. >> i'll make it look pretty. >> what do you have? >> mine is what we call a puree soup. and i think on the web site the recipe is actually for sweet potato soup. i changed it up and decided to use butternut squash. it's one of those vegetables a lot of folks don't know what to do with. i served some the other day with family members. brian said his was easy. this is simpler. you can add chicken stock. added chopped onion. butternut squash. bringing it to a boil. you were asking me earlier why i was doing the skimming. just so

we can have a purer soup. i'm sure there's somebody's great grandmother saying he's taking the flavor off. you cook until all the vegetables are tender. off camera i have a blender. blender is off now. in the meanwhile, to make this heart healthy, at this point once we blend it smooth, put it in the bowl. but here, i'm going to do it twice. one where it was simply pureed. look at that color. beautiful. then we're going to cheat. because i'm a big boy. going to add a touch of cream to it. mix it up. that cream just that little bit of fat in it makes it smoother. the other one here. >> and there it is.
