the a weather alert this evening, a powerful winter storm has been slamming the midwest all day. now it is moving our way, parts of kansas buried in 14 inches of snow creating a driving disaster across that state. could create a few problems in our area particularly due to the timing. let's check in with sue palka now. >> that timing probably won't be before the morning commute, but there's a chance of a messy mix around for the evening commute and certainly any time after noon tomorrow. let me snow you where it is on radar now. you'll see this is pushing into southwestern virginia. so you would think if it's already there, can't it be here by morning? no. high pressure will block it for a bit longer. we probably will see nothing but spotty precip well to our west in the morning. that will change as the day goes on. it does not look like this will come together in a big way for our area. it's going to be very light precipitation that may develop. in fact, we don't have any advisories for the metro.

they're all out to our west because there there could be a combination of snow and maybe ice in the higher elevations that could make for some travel troubles, but we still have to highlight the fact around here a very small, trace amount of sleet, could create some problems. while it will be very light we think this will develop any time after late morning into the early afternoon hours, could affect the evening commute because these road temperatures will be cold, not like some of these other storms where everything melted. after a few hours in the evening it looks like it will transition to all rain, especially after 6:00. it looks like there will be another storm we'll have to keep an eye on for saturday. we'll talk more about that and show you that fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> you can track live doppler radar with a fox 5 weather app on your droid, iphone or ipad. search d.c. weather. anne arundel county has a new county executive tonight. the county council elected laura newman, the economic development chief from howard

11:17 pm
chilly. already down to 32 and widespread 20s even through the clouds. so pavement will be cold. the good news is most of this very light precipitation and i'm talking trace amounts here won't get in for the most part until late morning, early afternoon. so hopefully we can warm things up a bit although only into the low and mid-30s most likely. 28 degrees overnight. clouds will increase. most places will be well about below freezing which is important when a little light mix comes through. 30 sib tomorrow for the district that. should prevent freezing rain but aing the snow or sleet can fall at that -- a little snow or sleet can fall at that temperature with a light accumulation possible depending how much precipitation we're able to get. we highlight the fact there could be slick spots around in the afternoon and evening hours. at 8 a.m. cloudy, spotty chance for snow or sleet but not widespread, 30
11:18 pm
degrees. by noon a little better chance we're seeing snow and sleet, 33 degrees and sleet is an ice pellet. sometimes that can be a little more slippery than snow on the streets. 4:00 we're getting that wintery mix at 35 degrees. that's why we think that afternoon and evening commute may require your patience and perhaps a little extra time. this storm has really been taking quite a toll on the middle part of the country. we've had lots and lots of dangerous situations, treacherous ice storm on the southern end of it, thunder snow and thunder rains and as you look at d.c., you can see rain is starting to move into southwestern virginia and icing going on in portions of central west virginia. that still is not going to get in until later in the day because high pressure is just up to our north and east. it will block it for a while. the advisories are flying to our west, not so much for the district. keep an eye on tucker in the morning. see if they decide to put us in an advisory. i think it will be so light it
11:19 pm
might not happen here, but in the mountains an inch or 2 of snow with maybe .1-inch of ice is possible. that's why those advisories begin tonight through friday. this area of low pressure producing the snow will weaken and essentially the precipitation will divide into two chunks, the snow portion of it going to our north. we're kind of in the middle with the light stuff and a second area of low pressure will develop with rain down here. that will run up the coast bringing us more cold rain saturday and more snow to new england, but in the meantime it will just be a small amount of snow and sleet for us. we can't put a number on it. i think it would be a coating of light accumulation and that may not happen in many areas but slick spots definitely could. a very quick look at futurecast and run this out to tomorrow morning so you can see it's not widespread. by 5:00, 6:00 it's probably a little rain down to the south and we expect this to change over to a cold rain going through the evening hours friday. your fox 5 accuweather seven-
