months, which represents over a 10% cut in the defense budget -- >> and the white house said 90,000 virginia-based employees could be furloughed if cuts are not avoided. >> and over to the norfolk national station, they forced the navy to cancel or delay the repair of certain aircraft carriers. >> reporter: republicans slam the president for holding campaign-style e vents instead of negotiating. >> wise traveling over 5,000 miles the last two weeks, and we challenge him, mr. president, a mile and a half to come to capitol hill. >> reporter: the president's public pressure on lawmakers should be directed towards his own party. >> and we moved the bill twice and we shouldn't before the senate begins to do something. >> reporter: it includes cuts only, while a senate proposal the president supports will close tax loopholes.

>> and to combine spending cuts. >> and it's time to cut the wasteful washington spending, not raise taxes. >> reporter: congress has wednesday and thursday to find a compromise. craig bosswell, fox news. >> here's the heart of the federal government. d.c. is bracing for sequestration. officials are preparing for this to hit for months. when it comes to businesses that actually depend on federal workers, they are very concerned and for good reason. fox 5s matt ackland is live with more. matt? >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of people travel into the district each year for work and many are government workers. those folks spend money to food and other services while they are here. so think about the impact to local businesses if furloughs take place and they no longer in the mod to spend. -- mood to spend. it's lunchtime at the sports tavern with thousands of government workers steps away.

this is a popular spot to grab a bite to eat. >> especially the lunch business, you know, monday through friday and that is 75 to 80% of lunch business we do this time of the year is local and government workers. >> reporter: he worries if his customers are furloughed or worried about losing work, his business will take a serious hit. >> if you're losings a portion of the income, you might think about bringing your lunch to work or more economical ways to save money. >> reporter: here in the district, the leaders prepared ahead of time esteration. the current budget is set up as if sequestration will take effect. >> and many of those issues, we'll project a higher revenue. >> reporter: it's forcing the district to set aside $60 million. and that is for education, health and security and housing.

the unknown cost is when it comes to furloughs. sales tax could take a hit. income could be reduced ifer d.c. residents and property taxes could be slashed if businesses lead. >> and those who are contractors, for example, who rent space is likely to be shrinkage there and that means a loss of income. the sales taxes, people likely to spend less. >> reporter: and that is the big concern at the sports tavern. first the government workers and they pay the price as well. >> and we hope we will see them as much as we are now. >> reporter: and it's important to point out that the district has no plans to lay anyone a as part of the questeration and this goes on for awhile, the city services could be hurt. >> anding thats for your report. to virginia now. that videova governor said the sequestration is going to

happen and the cuts are necessary. they're going to hit the defense department hard. mcdonough was discussing the issue. the way they're hitting the military is unfair. >> and governors live in a different world, a world of balanced budgets and getting things done on time. we have limited borrowing capacity, and we have to take full responsibility for everything that happens in our state. the president and congress live in a different world and there is notice balanced budget, unlimited borrowing capacity, $17 trillion in debt and a lot of finger pointing and blame. >> he expects the furloughs to begin as soon as the sequestering kicks in. mike miller hopes to have a vote on a gun policy bill by friday and it would ban certain guns and some large capacity magazines, require fingerprints for licensing. it would help cut down on straw purchases, when someone buys a

gun from someone else. the critics are not convinced that is a big problem that needs to be addressed. the prince georges county council voted unanimously to establish a work group. over the next serve months -- months, representatives from non-profits, clergy and others will join forces to find new strategies and solutions to the problem. fox 5 paul wagner is live in upper marlboro with the latest. paul? >> this work group will consistent of leaders in the county who will work with members of the county council who have given themselves until the end of september to find new strategies they think will work. >> and -- mr. patterson? joe all nine members voted in favor of pulling together a group of leaders in the county who would work with social services, the school system, and the clergy to come up with fresh ideas on reducing youth violence. >> and i think it's important to note that the county council

has a legislative body and responsibility to ensure we speak in a unified voice against crime and violence in our community. >> it will have discussion quickly and end quickly in an effort to make for some quick resolutions to the problems we see in our communities. [ sirens ] >> reporter: since last august, six high school students have been killed in a variety of violent confront allegations and at least two were attempted robberies, some involved gang activities n. all but two murders were solved by police. >> what we want is a group of people who can make decisions and who can look at what are the powers that we have within our particular organization. how can we work together to actually affect -- effect a solution that is sustainable, that is doable, that is effective and that is what we're trying to get to. >> reporter: harrison said the group will ultimately look for solutions that can be

legislated andco it -- do it in time to make recommending as, if need be, to the general assembly in a nap. and the couple chair -- in annapolis. once they come up with the recommendations at the end of september, they will put it in writing and it will be a part of the public record. >> thank you, paul. tonight, we know charges have been dropped against a 10- year-old alexandrea boy who took a toy gun to school. the douglas-macarthur fifth grader was arrested earlier this month after taking a fake gun on the bus. the judge dropped the charges at the request of the alexandrea prosecutor's office. a night club in an adjacent office will be closed for four days after the police labeled them as a threat to public safety following a fatal shooting. the 30-year-old was killed outside of no one 20 d.c. saturday morning. he was in the night club prior to the shooting.

. back in november, maryland voters gave the green light to allowing existing casinos to offer table games. the biggest casino announced the black jack and roulette tables will go live april 11th. john henrehan has more now from the floor of the casino in anne arundel county. >> reporter: the maryland live casino is already very successful and the owner's expect a big increase in

business here in 40 days. managers are removing 10% of the slot machines to make room for table games with human dealers. maryland's largest casino announced a timetable for that change early april. in addition to slot machines here, there are also electronic machines that simulate roulette and various card games. but maryland voters approved table games and the customers like that change. >> they don't like to play that automatic and that is a good thing. >> will you prefer doing the human dealing? >> will you come more often then? >> yes, i would. >> and what is the difference? >> the face-to-face contact with the dealers and some people, very nice.

>> are you going to be more inclineed to come more often? >> i think so. >> reporter: and there will be 4300 electronic machines here to keep the current customers happy. the managers are betting millions that the table games will bring in now gambling customers. >> and from the increase excitement related to table games, we would expect a 20 to 25% in customer volumes opening. >> reporter: maryland live is in the process of doubling the casino workforce of 1200 to 2400 employees and, as of this week, they're still hiring. here's the countdown clock. on or about april 9th, some table gaming will open for what is called a controlled demonstration. maryland gaming authorities will observe if it passes their test and that opens up after midnight on thursday, april 11th. in anne arundel county, john

henrehan, fox 5 news. smokers who want to light up inside camden yards won't be allowed to. it's prohibiting smoking inside the sports complex and that rule goes into affect march 4th. and in the past, smokers could light up but in designated areas. all right, we move to the former surgeon general c. everett coop. he died monday and we first brought you the news during the broadcast. he was 96 years old. as surgeon general, he turned his once obscure post into a bully pulp it for seven years during the reagan and george h.b. bush administration and use his platform to educate america about the dangers of smoking. he is the director of the snout of allergy and overseeing extensive research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious

pounding the nation's mid- section with the second major snowstorm in a week. there could be a silver lining to the back-to-back storms. fox's mike tobin has details from missouri. >> reporter: in overland park, kansas, thick snow as far as the eye can see and trying to clear a path for drivers desperately trying to keep up with the buildup. more than a half foot of snow cut power to thousands and bringing major cities to say standstill again. and kansas city, missouri, in a state of emergency. the combination of snow and gusting wins, making driving too dangerous. travel by air not much better. flights in and out of the airport, cancelled. the same goes with schools, government offices, and about businesses in the area. bury -- and businesses in the area. the storm knocked power out to thousands of schools in texas and oklahoma as well and is blamed for at least two deaths in the states. schools in major highways in the texas panhandle remain closed for the second day. officials hope to open stretches of highway shut down

. a warning tonight. it can help no matter where you live. there is someone making random phone calls trying to scare people and steal their money. beth parker is here now with all the details. >> reporter: this caller terrifies the victims by telling them a loved one is in danger. the montgomery county police financial crime second wants him caught before even more people suffer. when this man's cell phone rang saturday morning, it was not anybody he knew. >> your son is in big trouble. >> reporter: the caller had a thick accent and told richard that his son had been in a car accident and was now being held captive by a drug dealer, scary information. >> i can't guarantee what is going to happen to your son.

>> reporter: he demanded that richard go to western union and wire money, $800 to be exact. as they spoke, the caller's anger intensified. >> password, password, in your car now! youba,ba,ba,ba,ba. the cus words flowed like niagara falls. >> reporter: montgomery county police say there have been five such incidents in the the last week. >> keep track of when he calls. >> reporter: they believe the phone numbers are selected at random. richard never handed over any money but other victims did. >> i don't care who it is. an 85-year-old lady or me or a young person, initially the shock, it's a shock. >> reporter: call call came from a local 301 number, what got his attention. >> made a big difference. i thought he was down the street. >> reporter: his advice to others, don't give out any information, even something as simple as i have your son. >> he did not say your son gave

me this number. he didn't say it. he got my information from me first and i gave it to him. >> reporter: his son is on the west coast and just fine and they had a laugh about it. the guy wanted $800? i'm worth more than $800. >> and what presents as a 301 number on the caller i.d. in this case s actually an international number decided as local. don't give out personal information, especially over the phone. if you have doubts, ask if can you call up and back and that might clear things up. >> and this doesn't target elderly people? >> no, they have a list of ages among the victims and there might be more than you know about. the folk yes are in the 40s and 50s. not necessarily elderly folks. >> and don't give that phone number out. beth parker, thank you.

. we're back with a fox 5 health alert. a new study finds that breast cancer is on the rise. the most recent cancer statistic shows a significant increase in women under the age of 45 being diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, although researchers say it's a small increase, it's not a good sign. the researchers are studying to so if there is a ling between

and gaithersburg, upper 30s and temperatures in the upper 30s, too. and rain showers at 11:00 and some temperatures holding steady where they are now and briefly warmer. one day tomorrow, the temperatures will be into the upper 50s for high temperatures and that is looking like a high temperature taking us around 57 degrees or so and some of you south-southwest may actually be pushing 60 degrees and back into the lower 50s on thursday and that slight chance of a shower tomorrow afternoon and there is a slight chance of a shower on thursday as well and that is some snow flying for the midwest into the central mains and not as heavy as what it was yesterday. look at all the rain coming up here. we have a developing, getting stronger area of low pressure down to the south-southwest and as that continues to move closer to us, it will continue to bring rain in and this is

future cast at 7:00. i showed you on radar the stronger echos coming up from the southwest. the future cast sees that and wore still wet until midnight to 3:00 a.m. and dry out a bit. and by 8 tomorrow morning, this is shifted to the north of us. we'll be roy error -- dry and some early morning clouds and there could be a few late afternoon showers. it doesn't look like a big deal at all and keep that in mind. 41 tonight, and some winds out of the east, calming down a bit. late-late, and the chilly rain through the evening hours and tonight, a few foggy spots possible. and this is what it looks like for tomorrow and mostly clouds at 8:00 a.m., and with that 44 degrees. again, a chance of a spotty
