>> this one is of those topics where you just get -- it's so outrageous what people do to diss member this most vulnerablv group of the society. soc it has you shaking their heads. but this happens and in montgomery county you are facing it head on. tell us about the county. >> we know nationally that firsy of all as a nation we're aging. >> yes. ye >> the size of the senior population that is particularlyy subject of exploitation,ion, physical abuse and neglect is growing. in my county align we have 17345,000 seniors over the age of 65. that number is going to grow rapidly to nearly a quarter of a million. we know that crimes against the emedderly are up and we're trying to share information. share information about what tot look for if youio are a family member, friend, neighbor about o someone neglected abuses or financially explitted. we're running seminars next weee to help education the public

about how to help seniors who find themselves in need in any of those situations. >> right. it's really about.bo we've been hearing it a lot ovee the past years especially if you see something, say something.hi who do you say that something too? >> it's easy to report suspected abuse or neglect.egle -- neglect. the county has a 311 numberment it could be a point per call. there's a department of health and human services. the adult protective servicesvie staff reside 240-777-3,000. one could call the police, call 911, one could be anywhere to register this and it gets to the appropriate source. in theat department of health ad human services we have teams of trained clinical social worker and community health workers who team up to do the investigations in the home when there's an allegation. we keep the source of the referral confidential so one need not fear making the

referral if it's made in good faith. anyone could know they are proinfected. it said every five seconds an elder is abused. in montgomery county theyy investigate 700 allegations. working closely with the state's attorney office we have an elder abuse task with we look at how h to coordinate the services because it requires a multidiscipline far iny approach to this problem. >> how do you make sure that you have someone in a reputable living center, retirement agency but you suspect something isn't the quite right. how can you be an advocate for a lfd one in your live. how do you make sure that parents, grandparents are caredc for properly? >> i think you have to research the facility that you place your loved one in.
