>> yes on sunday i'll be celebrating my fifth anniversary of my kidney transplant. i was diagnosed with a disease called fsgia. -- fsgs. it, like other kidney diseases, effects the kid's ability to filter toxins out of the blood. my kidneys were only functioning at 30% combined. i made steps to investigate dialysis and figure out what myy options were. in the meantime, all of my friends and family were mobilizing to see if they couldc help and my high school sweetheart, who was my boyfriend at the time, was able to make it through the blood work and the workup and step forward andnd became my kidney donor. >> tell us about that picture right there.

>> his father is say photographer of the family -- is a photographer of the family. everybody was so nervous for usu so he was the one person that had a camera that day and that is the only photo we have. h >> where does it take you back to? >> just that morning.. we were nervous and excited and throughout this whole process kind of coming to the terms witt the fact that derek is my knighk and shining armor. >> literally. >> really. re >> how is he doing? d part of this is getting the t point across that you can be a donor and you can go on to live a healthy and happy and full life. >> yes, he actually had an aunt that gave a kidney to her brother, his uncle so he was able to see you can give this t gift and help someone that you love and come out on the other side just fine. f >> let me ask you.

who should be tested? how are you tested? is it a complicated process as s far as knowing you are at risk r for kidney disease. [ laughter ] >> if you have diabetes or high blood pressure you should bee testing to see how well your kidneys are doing. the cause is a rare condition fsgs but diabetes and high pressure cause kidney disease. they are the leading causes of it. testing for kidney disease is simple. a blood test and urine test. kit quickly effect how well youy kidneys are work. >> there's a screening taking place this weekend. i know it's monday but we want to get the word out and also any e-mail, any web site folks can go to find out more information to tell us about it. >> that's right. saturday at the pg sports and learning complex in landover from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. we're holding the kidney actioni day. the centerpiece of the event is kidney screening for anyone 18

things could be dangerous. liver toxicity, kidney failure. >> do you find people are goingg out and getting pain relievers for their pets? yes, definitely. i get it.t i when our pets hurt. it's like our family members are hurting. you want to get rid of that pain. i would recommend is talk to your veterinarian. there are good, safe pain medications for those animals and those aches and pains that they get. there are good things that you can do to supplement that whicht are safe and those are over-the-counter products which have some anti-inflammatory and joint protective benefits. ben fish oil which are also good for dog aps -- and cats long term. you won't see an immediate effect. older animals fish oil can helph them out.em but again, i would really r
