. right now at 10:00, wow, what a difference a week makes. when you wake up tomorrow morning, single digit wind chills. i'll have the forecast. l gym one m getting ing out at dizzy and passing out the next. the health scare that could have turned deadly. >> and a rush to put out a fire in an apartment building. the problem is, firefighters were sent to the wrong address. what happened? fox 5 local news at 10:00 starts right now. and good evening, thanks for joining us tonight. i'm jim lokay in for shawn. >> and i'm tony perkins right off the top tonight, the frigid temperatures. it has not been this frigid out there since march 7 of last year. the wind chill is dipping into the single dij itsds in some areas. >> it's hard to believe eight

days ago we were topping 70 degrees in the district. >> what has cha sm. >> those cherry blossoms are going to say bye-bye everyone. a lot of times when they bloom in the winter they aren't quite as beautiful in the spring. would you like to take a guess at what the current wind chill is out at dulles. >> 28? >> i'm going to say 23. >> 6. it's ridiculous. we expected that already in the morning. >> we asked our followers on twitter that represents how you're feeling about this weather and that's what they chose "baby it's cold outside" it is cold out there. check out the weather headline not only are we in the single digits tonight but we'll be there in the morning. a big area of high pressure to pull that cold canadian air down, it's creating a very, very cold night with a lot of

bluster. we still have gusts up and over 30 miles per hour in some places and that brings the wind chill down 5 to 10 degrees. these are the air temperatures and that's what you were correctly guessing at. it's in the 20s everywhere. first time we've dipped below 30 at dc, all 2015. 26 degrees now we're still gusting to 35 at dulles here in the district as well and that's why it's so painful to be out there tonight. wind chill temperatures i said 6 at dulles, 7 at baltimore, 9 at dulles. 12 degrees is the current windchill in the district and that is not good. and the 7:00 a.m. wi7bd chills as our future cast is seeing it, down right cold, very important that you bundle the kids up this rng month. i think the temperature is bad at noon. by the time we get to 5:00 at least we're back feeling like it's in the 20s. i think the worst of the wind will be before noon. it's a bit of the shock to the

system following our warmest november and december. we don't think this is going to last all week long but while it's here tomorrow will be the official coldest day of the season. >> developing in the district tonight crews aren't dealing with frigid temperatures as they battle a house fire. flames broke out just about an hour ago. right now we are told at least one firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries. no word yet on if anyone was hurt and the cause under investigation. >> it's now been over seven hours since a man barricaded himself inside his georgetown office and has refused to come out. the building is located on the 3,000 block of k street. police say he is in there alone. they are working on a peaceful resolution. several surrounding streets have been closed while they investigate. now we turn to our fox 5 exclusive, the gym. likely the last place you think

your health would be at risk. but for several people it was just the opposite. witnesses say people were collapsing at their treadmills at an alexandria gym. it turns out members were exposed to carbon monoxide. fox 5's tisha lewis joins us live from alexandria with the story. >> reporter: space heaters and ovens used the wrong way in homes to keep warm during the winter months is the most common way that carbon monoxide -- people are exposed to carbon monoxide and in a gym with people packed getting ready for their new year's resolutions, that's the least-likely place you would expect to be exposed to carbon monoxide, but it did happen here. here at express fitness center in alexandria, sparking dizziness and blurred vision and nausea for at least a dozen people. >> i started getting

light-headed and i thought it was the preworkout kicking in. i looked over to my left and a gentleman literally just collapsed. literally collapsed off of the man. >> reporter: and saturday morning at export fitness was packed with people and carbon monoxide. >> i hear my girlfriend yelling my name and as i turn around and look she's falling back on a pillar bracing herself to not fall the way down on the floor. at that time it kicked in something is not right here i looked up and people were running by and it was pandemonium. de detector and identified there was high levels of carbon monoxide in the building. >> reporter: how high? >> don't remember the numbers. i do know that the alarms peeked out and i do know one showed

over a thousand parts per million. >> reporter: a 35 parts per million reading is hazardous. >> this was actually caused by the heaters for the pool water. they malfunctioned and the carbon monoxide was coming out into the building, which is still under investigation. >> we were actually right by the front desk where they had the towels, i grabbed two of the towels and put them over our faces and my first thought was to get to fresh air. >> reporter: again, this scare happening the day after new year's day. we're told that two people were transported to the hospital. five people took themselves to the hospital, and two more people checked in to urgent care. we're also told that this x-sport fitness center was cited by the fire marshall. we did reach out for a comment on this incident and there was no response. tisha lewis, fox 5 local news. >> we're learning more tonight about the death of a 74-year-old

patient. he died after a scuffle with two hospital security guards at medstar's washington hospital center. the autopsy is now complete in the death of james mcbride is ruled a homicide. the medical examiner says he died from a broken neck caused by blunt force trauma. mcbride was wearing nothing but a hospital gown which this all happened. according to the police report the two special police officers restrained him as they were trying to bring him back inside as he left without signing out september 29th. he died two days later. the autopsy also discovered in addition to a broken neck he suffered severe compression to his spinal cord. right after the death the hospital held a press conference. >> he was resuscitated there at the scene by his nurse, and by a rapid response team. he was brought to our emergency room where resuscitation continued and that followed up in our intensive care unit where

received excellent care. >> a new statement today says in part our sharts continue to go out to the patient's family. to date as a result of our reviews we've integrated several new enhanced training and we've identified a unique mult disciplinary team to respond to certain high-risk situations. he was a father of two. we still don't know why he was originally hospitalized. police in the u.s. attorney's office are still investigating. another homicide investigation going on right now into the death of this man. 27-year-old alonzo smith. he died in the custody of two special police officers as well. the medical examiner in this case ruled the cause of death was sudden cardiac death and a contributing factor was the compression of his chest. the special officers in this case have not been charged. an investigation is ongoing. >> a violent attack on metro's

red line there were new surveillance images and these came just one hour after fox 5 contacted metro and were told there were no new developments in that investigation. marina marraco is live with more on this. >> reporter: jim, it's been exactly two weeks since this assault happened on a metro train. that victim left bleeding from the mouth at a platform here at the noma station. for that entire period fox 5 has contacted metro asking for the release of those pictures and today we're finally getting our first look at those six persons of interest. six individuals some surveillance tape, three males and three females. metro police still uncertain of their ages, although had repeatedly told fox 5 the images were initially being withheld from release because they could be minors. >> 5:30 in the morning is different, 5:30 at night rush hour. >> reporter: at the height of

rush hour on monday december 21st, witnesses claim a group of teens, quote, were punching the victim's head until he couldn't move and then they knocked him out. >> i always thought it was weird that there weren't any cameras there. you think just for matters like this. >> reporter: metro says the assault was not caught on tape. another reason the agency says it took two weeks to release these pictures in order to, quote, preserve the suspect id process. >> i see loud, boisterous teens, i don't necessarily associate that with a problem. >> a key witness who wrote about the experience said tenor 12 kids who were being loud and rowdy and they egged each other on to attack a guy who was just sitting there for no reason. in the account there's no mention of say media police presence but did mention once police arrived officers had no sense of which car took place on. >> occasionally i do see them. >> would you like to see an increase presence? >> sure. if nothing else it's a

it is a story you'll see only on fox 5. that new year's day fire in a fst apartment building it burned for as long as 12 minutes after dispatchers sent firefighters to the wrong location. paul wagner talked to one of the

fire victims. he has this fox 5 exclusive. >> reporter: rosy was asleep inside her apartment in northwest when her dog began barking. >> i get up i thought maybe she hear some mouse or something. so i get up. >> reporter: it was 4:35 a.m. new year's day and smoke was filling her home. she quickly picked up her cell phone and called 911. >> i scream on the phone like the lady on 911, she stay with me all the time. she said all the time they're coming, they're coming. >> reporter: but for nearly 6 minutes, as the fire raged, that wasn't the case. listen as the dispatcher sends help miles away to the wrong address. >> apartment number 2 at 22044 14 street northwest. >> several engines were sent, but when they arrived, there was

no smoke, no fire. >> engine nine on the scene, three-story commercial building. nothing evident. >> listen carefully to what she says. >> a call-back for 14th street northwest. >> yes, r, calling back right now. we just got another run for 22 40th street, not 14. >> can you repeat that? >> we just got another call for the same address at 40th. >> at that point dispatchers at the 911 center corrected the mistake and sent different trucks and engines to 40th street northwest. >> all units be aware. we've got heavy fire showing in the rear from the first floor, second floor. >> reporter: standing outside her apartment rosy was thankful to be alive and had no idea a mistake had been made. >> when i get home the light was like on.

and i thought somebody is inside and they didn't answer i get scared we all going to burn because the smoke detectors didn't go on, there's no fire alarm in the building. >> this is what's left of her apartment and with the kindness of some friends and her employer, she has warm clothes to wear and a place to stay. >> now i'm safe, it's okay it's material stuff. the life is the most important thing. >> reporter: paul wagner, fox 5 local news. >> now investigators say the dispatcher wrote down that wrong address. she wrote down 14th street instead of 40th street. that whole incident is now under review. >> developing tonight things remain calm in burns, oregon when armed anti-government group has taken over a federal building at a wildlife refuge. the group called citizens for constitutional freedom are protesting for two ranchers sentenced to prison time for setting fires on federal land. they want federal land turned over to local authorities.

the fbi is monitoring the situation and is offering support to local law enforcement. a former south carolina police officer charged with shooting and killing an unarmed black motorist has been released from jail. he is charged with murder in the death of walter scott. officials say he shot scott as he ran away during a traffic stop last april under the conditions of his bond, the ex-officer will be held under house arrest and cannot have any contact with the victim's family. >> an online petition is calling for president obama to pardon steven avery. the change.org petitions already received 160,000 signatures. back in 2007 he was convicted in wisconsin and is serving a life sentence for a murder. avery previously spent 18 years in prison for sexual assault before he was exonerated based

it is the hottest ticket in town. for the first time since 2013, the washington redskins will host a playoff game and if you wanted to be there we had to move fast and we mean real fast. general admission tickets for sunday's game sold out in only 13 minutes today. we did a quick search for tickets and standing room seats are going for $150. some premium seats are going for

at 10:30, a look at some of the big stories making headlines and this one breaking right now. an end to a georgetown barricade situation. the update coming in just moments ago. this was all unfolding along the 3000 block of k street. the man refusing to come out of his office. police tell us tonight he gave up and no one hurt. this was a nearly eight-hour standoff. we now know the autopsy results in the death of a 74-year-old patient who died after a scuffle with two security guards here at medstar's washington hospital center. the medical examiner says it was a homicide. james mcbride died from a broken neck caused by blunt force trauma according to the report. no charges filed yet. two weeks after a man was attacked on a metro train and left bleeding from the mouth at a platform in noma, metro

this happened shortly after 8:00 tonight and right now we're hearing it may have involved a pedestrian. as of right now there's no word on what caused the crash. >> if you go to american university, leave the hoverboard behind. >> university officials banned them today because of ongoing safety issues. caitlin roth with the details. >> the university did issue a ban. however, it is temporary. for now the self-balancing scooters are not permitted on campus or in any buildings owned by american university. officials issued the ban after safety issues had been raised. hover boards have also been known to overheat and catch on fire. there's also the well-documented issue of people getting hurt from falling off of them. this is all part of the university's initiative to maintain a safe campus through a

expensive fire prevention program. they join george washington university here the growing institutions for banning the device. we caught up with some kids to gauge their reaction to the ban. >> a lot of my friends are treating it mostly as a joke, they're posting it on social media, making fun of it, basically just not taking it serious. >> i don't think it's really going to do anything. i mean, a hoverboard is just like a skate board. some people don't know how to ride them and some people do. i understand there's the whole worry that some of them have caught fire and stuff like that, but that's really probably been the misuse of the hoverboards. >> and american university says the ban is in effect until further notice. once the cpsc has concluded the review of the hover board, the university will reassess.

clothing tomorrow morning. >> you need an ins lating layer. a very sharp change in the weather pattern is catching people off guard. gusts of 25 and 35 miles per hour. did you see a couple of snow flakes earlier today. this morning we had some light snow come on through a few places saw them. not everybody did. i saw very few pictures so i think this really caught people without their cell phones or maybe before you got up. but we did get one picture and this is from teresa in the lake ridge area. enough in some spots to at least show up for a photo op. and believe it or not, if you live in calvert county, maybe down towards saint mary's, you can see some snow showers later tonight because of the bay effect if the wind direction changes. meanwhile what we're headlining is the single digit wind chill temperatures. it is the coldest air we're

seeing so far and we'll continue to see that tomorrow. the winds will get better as the day goes on and also this is rather short-lived by the time we get later into the week we're going to get back into the 50s. especially in time for the redskins playoff game. high pressure up over the northern plains that's why we have the strong winds and the cold and it's dropped us into the 30s today, we'll be in the 30s again tomorrow. dramatically colder considering that just eight days ago the high temperature was 70 in dc. 38 today, we're going for 37 tomorrow and tonight we're lucky if we only get to 20 that will be good. i'm starting to worry it could even be colder than 20 in the strict. with those winds maybe we keep it at 20. with the suburbs mid teens. we get up to 35 degrees tomorrow and by wednesday we're in the low 40s but what you want to be ready for tomorrow morning are those wind chill temperatures because they will be in the single digits. right now we're at 26 in the district, that's just

unbelievable. what a big drop. it's 19 already in gaithersburg. 21 in baltimore, 21 in martinsburg. painfully cold out there. 9 at dulles, 7 at baltimore, 6 at hagerstown, 9 in frederick and 12 in the district. it is mighty cold out there. this is your planner for tomorrow just to give you some idea. 8:00 in the morning a temperature of 22. we'll look at wind chills around 7 degrees. so very, very cold indeed and the rest of the day not a whole lot better. we want to show you quickly on radar that we did have a little bit of a flow of lake effect snow coming through and again wouldn't be shocked if closer to the bay you get something tonight but that would be the exception not the rule. tony was already saying this is unbelievably cold how long is it going to last? really only two days. because by the time we get to thursday it's about 46. some showers possible friday at 49. we're dry on saturday. unfortunately right now for the

concept to, first off, rehearse as much as we did beforehand in the wilderness in these actual locations trying to accomplish, it was like a swiss watch sometimes so many different departments and actors had to work in coordination with the camera work. but every single day was a massive rehearsal until we had that hour and a half of magic light. so it wasn't the magic light it was the time period in which we needed to accomplish the day's work and that was usually about an hour and a half and it brought a lot of intensity to the film-making process. i think a lot of the intensity is because we know in the back of our mind we have to finish the day so we go for it. we go for it every single day. otherwise hundreds of people are back at that same location, which is hours and hours away from our home base. >> it's not like you have to find your light in the sun. oh, you're in the shadow.

>> in this movie you're literally having to eat a bison organ. when you have to do that in a sequence, does it really help add to the actual moment for you. >> let's qualify that organ was liver. >> liver, yeah. >> yeah, i mean. the reaction is up on the screen. i think that, you know, you put yourself in those circumstances, pain is temporary, film is forever. you realize you have one shot at making this sequence look good. the native american active that i was working with, arthur who was incredibly talented was eating liver all day. and he said it's in his culture and it's something that he actually likes the taste of. my thing looked like a big, bloody pancake. i had to go for the real thing and the reaction is up there. i think it gave a great moment to the movie ultimately. it's realistic, that's for sure. >> i can't wait to see it.
