you may need an extra blen ket tonight because the temps are taking a dive. good to have you with us. i'm will thomas. >> and i'm lauren demarco. we finally saw some snow in our area today. nothing more than a dusting. it was brief but it made for some pretty views. bitter cold weather is moving in. we've got team coverage with this beginning with the latest on the forecast with gwen tolbart. >> bitter cold is a great description because we're going to see a big dip. we've been spoiled all winter long and it's coming to an abrust end as we move into tonight. here is a look at the current temperatures and they are a far cry from where we are headed. we're at 35, 32, 29 at culpeper, 32 at winchester, 32 degrees at cumberland. but we've got some winds that

are light and calm. take a look the athe national picture. you can see that bright pink there and the darker blue, that's the cold air heading our way and it's going to start to move across the mid atlantic tonight. it will be sticking around into the beginning of the week. so not much of a break until we get to about mid week before we see some improvement in these temperatures. our highs today only 38 at reagan, 37 at dulles and 37 at bwi thursdaygood marble. we should really be in the low 40s and in the 50s. this is where we're heading a real down trend on that mercury. take a look at the west. this is where we've seen some snow showers from yesterday through today. and this is where we've got some pretty strong winds and significant windchills. windchill advisory in effect from 7:00 tonight until 11 on

monday. it's going to feel like -15 to -20 degrees and temperatures will only be from 0 to 15 degrees. so for tonight 22 degrees your overnight low, partly cloudy skies, very cold and breezy and significant wind chills. i'll have the forecast and let you know what you can expect for the beginning of the week and of course that all-important mlk holiday. back to you. >> we continue our coverage now with alexandra limon live in georgetown. pretty good idea to take precautions when it gets this cold outside. >> yeah, definitely. the temperatures continue to go drop out here. definitely time to throw on those layers and tomorrow you can expect it to be bone-chilling cold. and that is why the dc cold emergency plan is now in effect from tonight through thursday morning at 7:00 in the morning. today we did see some snow flurries, just a few flakes. but again the cold is going to be coming in and that means the

dc cold emergency plan is now in effect and that means emergency shelters are now open. also warming centers as well and there is free public transportation for anyone who needs to get there. since we haven't had very many cold days this winter it's easy to forget things like forecast bite can happy very quickly in these conditions. today out and about we talked to people to get their feelings about the sudden change in the weather. >> i'm from north carolina so i'm hoping that it's not too bad. yeah, i mean, how it is now is like the light snow is cute and fun. >> i hope it stays like it is now. i know it's abprobly not going to. but i'm enjoying it while it lasts. >> i hope it snows so he gets to play in it. >> it's our first to get snow. it's special for me to be under the snow. >> so you heard it there. some people wishing that we had some snow to accompany these cold temperatures. and while it might not be

happening immediately, here's what you need to keep in mind for the cold. wear things like layers. also avoid alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. if you get wet change your clothes as soon as possible and if you feel numbness anywhere your hands, your feet, your face, that is not a good sign head indoors as soon as possible. if you see someone out and about on the streets who appears to need help who is in the cold and you think may need a place to go, it's very easy to help. all you need to do here in dc is call 311. reporting live in georgetown, alexandra limon, fox 5 local news. >> the people in our region may have felt their house shake this afternoon. if you thought it was an earthquake, you were right. a small earthquake hit about 2:00 near the borders of west virginia, virginia and maryland. the quake was a 3.0 magnitude. glory said she felt it and judy

in harper's ferry. it was centered just south of harper's ferry and was felt dozens of miles away. so far waive heard no reports of any injuries or damage from the quake. >> police say they're looking for a man who has been peeping into homes. this is an image of the suspect. police say the incidents may have started on december 29th in the springfield area. they say the man looked inside occupied hoemtion and ran away. the suspect is believed to be in his late teens or early-to-mid 20s. new cell phone video shows an attack on a green line train that seems to have started following some sort of altercation on metro. >> fox 5's marina marraco is live in northwest with more details on the latest violent attack on metro. here we go again. >> reporter: yeah, another assault. this one caught on cell phone video. it's the first one we're actually seeing on tape. according to the person who shot this it was posted just last

friday happening at about 3:00 on the green line. as that was off loading at the shaw-howard university stop. and i want you to take a look at this video you'll see the victim there on the left-hand of your screen, the face blurred out. but that person minding their own business. now in the back of the train there appears to be a group of loud, boisterous teenagers and the person who is shooting the video is trying to capture just that. eventually a girl in that pack of teens walks up to the person shooting the video, knocks the cell phone down and once the shooter picks up the phone again, that's where you see the beating happen. it appears that victim is bleeding from the mouth. now there was a rider on that train. remember this happened about 3:00 in the afternoon according to the person who shot this video. there's someone who asked the victim are you okay.

and then gets off the train. but we don't know if this was reported to authorities. we've asked metro for comment. they have yet to get back to us. shoufr we did catch up with some riders. they have mixed feelings about safety on metro. >> that was a one-off fight. i've never seen anything like that on metro. i ride metro seven days a week. so. >> reporter: you see a lot of metro transit police presence? >> no. there could be a lot more. that probably would help a lot. even one riding the train. it doesn't make sense not to have at least one cop riding the train going back and forth they are. >> sometimes they are. i think sometimes their unpredictability is their strength. in the sense if people are going to go attacking others they may not know where they're going to turn up. >> reporter: do you feel safe on metro? >> yeah, pretty much. >> reporter: since late december fox 5 has uncovered a string of assaults at the hand of teenagers. metro saying they're looking for at least two different groups of

teenagers behind at least two separate attacks. just last week metro says they arrested a 15-year-old girl from northeast dc believed to have been behind a group attack back in november. also on the green line happening right there at the shaw-howard university stop we've asked metro potentially these two attacks could be connected. we're still waiting for word. for now reporting live in northwest, marina marraco, fox 5 local news. >> as the 10:00 continues tonight, the case of freedom for five americans who have been held in iran. you're going to hear what some of them are saying. >> also coming up, wild weather in florida as a tornado touches down with devastating results. and get ready to meet the real housewives of potomac. we'll talk about what we saw coming up.

three americans freed in a prisoner swap with iran are now in germany. the washington post reporter is among that group. a forth freed american prisoner is staying in iran while a detained student is also free tonight. more developments. >> reporter: the prisoner's swap is the culmination of 14 months of secret diplomacy though the president said the american state was never tied to a successful nuclear deal. >> as i've said many times, the nuclear deal was never intended to resolve all of our differences with iran, but still, engaging directly with the iranian government on a sustained basis for the first time in decades has created a unique opportunity. a window to try to resolve important issues. >> reporter: in addition to

washington post reporter who was arrested in 2014 and convicted of spying by a secret iranian court, the freed americans include a u.s. marine veteran and an american student, though little is known about their cases. a jet carrying the americans arrived in switzerland a midway point on the way to germany where the americans will be debriefed and receive medical treatment. after the news broke. >> it is surreal. it came at a time i was not expecting and it doesn't feel real until we see him. but i know it's real. >> reporter: the prisoner exchange came just before economic sanctions on iran were lifted under the terms of the nuclear deal struck last summer. freeing up tens of billions of dollars of frozen assets and opening global markets. a congressional source briefed

on the intelligence says iran is holding more americans, some of those names are not public. adding the regime has not turned the page on its use of hostages as bargaining chips. >> meanwhile the brother of jason says his release has brought indescribable relief and joy to the family. he said in a statement his family is thankful to all those that brought awareness to his polite. he says their support gave the family the strength to keep fighting for his release. >> not everyone is praising this prisoner exchange. at least two candidates are raising red flags over the agreements with iran wondering if it's a raw deal for the united states. kristin fisher has more on that part of the story. >> reporter: this is one issue that all the republican presidential candidates are in agreement on. they say they're thrilled these americans have been released but they're yubt united in their criticism on two fronts. this sets a dangerous precedent and they believe this deal is

simply a bad deal for the u.s. here's senator ted cruz. >> this deal is a really problematic deal. and it reflects a pattern we've seen in the obama administration over and over again of negotiating with terrorists. and making deals and trades that endanger u.s. safety and security. >> reporter: one of the big sticking points of the republican candidates is how much they sweeter they perceive this deal to be for iran. donald trump says quote, in iran deal we get 4 prisoners, they get $150 billion, seven of the most wanted and many off the watch list. this will create great incentives for others. and his opponents agree. >> what the president is now doing, not just with this but what he did with the castro brothers and what he did with bergdahl, he's put a price on every american head abrought. >> this is an invitation to hold an american hostage, humiliate

the united states of america and then demand something of ridiculously high value and know that as long as this administration is in power, you're going to get it. >> reporter: several republican candidates were also asked today if the president deserves any credit for securing the release of these four americans. they gave him little to no credit because they believe this should have been secured long before a nuclear deal was ever signed. >> a complicated search continues for 12 missing marines off the coast of hawaii. rescue efforts are being hamperred by high surf. the marines have been missing since thursday during a night time training mission. authorities believe two marine helicopters carrying six people each crashed. debris has been spotted near oahu. we're learning the sister of one of the marines lives in the dc area. she was miss district of

columbia 2014. tonight she is back home in florida with her family. the miss dc organization says their thouts and prayers are with the family. >> now to a weather alert in the aftermath of a deadly tornado that swept through part of florida. two adults are dead and five others are hurt after a tornado whipped through a town in sarasota county. another touched down, that was a category 2 with winds up to 135 miles per hour. >> pretty cold weather settling in across our region and we had a few flurries today. nothing all that significant. lower southern maryland did get the accumulation of a couple of inches but here in the district, not quite so. let's take a look at our map. we actually can say we did get the first measurable snow of the season. .3 only for dc officially. and look at this picture. this is in a bethesda backyard

where the white flakes made themselves at home for a little while. it didn't stick around all that long but it was a reminder of the season we're in. and that's the story with the temperatures. we are being reminded we are in january. as our temperatures take a big plunge with some arctic air moving in. currently 35 degrees at dc, 31 at dulles, 32 at frederick, 30 degrees at gaithersburg, 29 at baltimore this hour and that's the same at culpeper. so we're going to see an arctic air mass move in and make itself right at home. it will be sticking around for a few days and our temperatures will be struggling to get out of the 20s and overnight lows will be settling into the teens. we've got some winds to be concerned with. that arctic air is going to move all the way down across the mid atlantic. all associated behind a cold front that will loop through tonight and then an arctic ridge of high pressure. wind chill advisory for areas to the west here it's going to feel

a volcano in western mexico has erupted. kalima is also known as the fire volcano. it's located more than 400 miles west of the mexico city. to the growing problem of cyber warfare. it's how people of foreign governments can at least try to devastate our infrastructures

and power grids. >> intelligence forces tell fox news they have new information the russians are stepping up shack attacks focusing on foreign institutions that threaten russian interests. >> reporter: based on our reporting these cyber militias act as proxies for the russian president and they leave a digital trail of evidence and they're using their cyber skills in a patriot i can fashion against nato, u.s. government officials and against countries like the ukraine. on december 23rd there was a significant attack against the power grid in ukraine rendering hundreds without power. they allow for the destruction of computers on the other end causing electrical to fail. >> this specifically is a targeted attack, leveraged a malware like what was similar in

that's moving in. and i want to say with a little bit of snow shower or flurry that we did get today, be very careful on overpasses or bridges because with the cold air moving in it could really cause some slick spots out there so just keep that in mind. so arctic air is moving in all up and down the mid atlantic. gusty winds as well. that's going to provide wind chills and very significant ones, i want to say. the temperature rise isn't going to happen until about mid week and we have a chance of seeing winter precipitation later in the week and i'll talk about that as well. so as we put all this together for you let's begin with a look at satellite radar. we had some of those flurries that moved through today and some of you sent us some nice photographs. here is a look out to the west and this is where they've seen snow showers over the allegheny front, the potomac highlands and blue ridge. our numbers struggled to get to the upper 30s.

a cold day for shower. temperatures should be into the low 40s so it's january. this is what happens. 35 right now in dc. 29 at baltimore. 30 degrees at mannasas this hour. 32 at hagerstown as well as martinsburg as well as winchester and quantico. we've got snow showers that could possibly kind of pull through with this frontal system. it's going to move through tonight. you might see another flurry or two but nothing that's going to stick around. with this front that arctic air pushes itself in and makes itself right at home. over the higher elevations is where we have a wind chill advisory in effect. the wintd is fairly gusty here. pushing in from the west. wind chills -15 to -20 and that's what it feels like there when you step outside. winds are gusting to 35 miles per hour. this kicks in 11:00 tonight until 7:00 p.m. on monday. we have the 50s on friday and the 30s today. i'm telling you big change here.

big change. look at this. settling in. highs into the 30s. even some areas where highs are only going to be in the 20s and other overnight lows are going to dip to the teens. arctic ridge of high pressure behind that cold front that moves in and that just reinforces this cold air. so we're going to get that flow that pushes in and by the time we get into tuesday we're going to have another very, very cold day once again with those lows just struggling to be above the 20 degree mark. so here we are for tomorrow. midday 25 degrees, breezy at times, sunny and cold. 22 at the 5:00 hour. i want to tell you don't forget we've got all the festivities for mlk today. you've got to dress really warm. you have to take it seriously. here are wind chills. here's what it's going to feel like once we get to tomorrow. single digits. by noon 6 degrees -12 degrees, and here we are by the 5:00 hour. so not warming up even into

just 3.5 minutes into the game. the onslaught continues and this right here was newton's only touchdown pass of the game. it was 31-0 at the half. the nfc championship will be right here on fox at 6:40. the broncos patriots game earlier on another network. the caps hosting the rangers. didn't use that gold stick by the way. we find out later on it wasn't because of injury he was feeling dehydrated. he did not return to the game.

get ready for a chilly wake-up. >> gwen tolbart is with us. gwen we got some snow today. that was fun, not enough for a snowman but cold is the big headline. >> we've got arctic air that's moving in tonight and it's sticking around for a couple of days. let's begin with a look at our temperatures right now as it continues to plunge 28 at baltimore, 32 at frederick.

we've got 32 at winchester and 31 degrees at culpeper and dulles and 31 degrees. now, here's a look at the 24-hour temperature change. up and down the mid atlantic those temperatures now anywhere from about 6 to even 13 degrees colder than it was last night at this time. and this is just the beginning because this is because we've got more of that colder air going to filter in. you can see where the bright pink is. that is heading right across our area and we're going to end up seeing a very, very cold day tomorrow and even colder monday night into tuesday. the winds are going to be fairly light but they'll pick up tonight into tomorrow and we'll have some wind gusts and we'll also have some wind chills. your overnight low tonight only 22 degrees, partly cloudy skies, very cold and breezy and we are talking arctic air mass that's going to bring temperatures into the 20s, overnight lows only into the teens and we've got wind chills that will be in the single digits. i'll hav
