. right now at 10:00, painfully cold air over our region to start the week, and potential for a major snowstorm to end the week. i'll have your forecast. >> we'll be ready for the storm. we'll have truckloads coming in on a rug basis. >> with the threat of this major winter storm looming, we look at how people are preparing across the dmv. >> plus multiple threats of gun violence. tonight parents demanded answers. fox 5 local news at 10:00 starts right now. we begin tonight with breaking nous out of prince george's county. an ambulance flipped over on the beltway in oxon hill. >> the tisha lewis is on the phone right now. what can you tell us about the scene. we're seeing some pictures here. >> reporter: what i can tell you is that this is still a very active scene.

just watching what i'm seeing right now, a few traffic backups. we do know a car sideswiped this ambulance. that car was discovered about 200 feet down the roadway. in the process of all of this happening, the ambulance struck a light pole. that light pole then essentially pierced another car that was traveling in the same direction. all of this happening on the beltway tovent in oxon hill near saint barnabas road causing what is probably more than an hour of delays. we do know that two paramedics were taken to the hospital. we're told that they have non-life-threatening injuries. that is according to the prince

george's county fire spokesperson it's a very active scene out here. a lot of first responders out here. there's a lot of police officers and also first responders out here on the scene trying to piece together exactly what happened. zbld we are going to try to fix our technical difficulties there. look at this video. it's incredible to see that poll sticking out of that car. tisha lewis on the scene for us. an ambulance flipped over. we're going to get more details in a few minutes. >> now to the big story that many of you are talking about and we are feeling for sure those subfreezing temperatures and the threat for snow later in the week. several school districts in fact are operating a 2-hour delay tomorrow because of the weather. frederick county virginia public schools prince william county

schools and warren county schools. >> and tonight we are bringing you some team coverage of this intense winter blast. >> it is absolutely painful to be out there tonight. no doubt about it. everybody is down into the teens and for the first time this year we have a very substantial wind chill advisory for much of our area. and then there's the end of the week that we have to touch on. the big headline tonight is the dangerous wind chills that are upon us and that will be with us into the morning. and we're thinking about the kids heading back. there are a lot of 2-hour delays. they keep on coming in, prince william county and loudoun because of this cold. the breezes are going to continue. in about the 10-20 mile an hour range. and in this blue-shaded area, that is the wind chill advisory.

those wind chills can be as low as 10 to 20 degrees below zero overnight and through noon on tuesday. these are the actual air temperatures. not the wind chill. it's 12 in gaithersburg and and martinsburg. when we factor in the winds we get a wind chill temperature of 3 in dc, 3 below in gaithersburg and hagerstown as well as winchester and cumberland. so mighty cold overnight. want to take you forward to 7:00 a.m. so you can see these are the kinds of wind chills we're forecasting. by the time we get to the noon hour we're talking upper single digits to near 10 degrees in most areas. by 6:00 tomorrow night not a lot of improvement. bottom line, bitter cold air continues during the day tomorrow. we're only going to top out in the 20s. now we're going to jump you to the end of the week because we know you want to know what's going on with this threat. we do have the potential for a

major snowstorm this weekend. this is the area of low pressure that we think will start to form and move toward the carolina coast on friday afternoon. that is always a favorable position for us. but what has been missing most of this winter is the cold air supply. but many of our operational models are saying that the cold air will be in place friday night and saturday to give us a really big snowstorm for this area if those models continue to trend in this direction. here's what's holding us up from even throwing out snow totals. we've still got four more days. second of all, the storm that will produce this has not even gotten on to the lower 48. once it comes assure we'll be able to get more upper air data tomorrow night and wednesday and that will help us to start to figure out the intensity of this storm, the track, how fast is it going to move. right now just want to show you an end on this. we still have some questions about where the rain-snow line will be in this area. probably all snow north and west. one of our classic storms. still a few details to be nailed

down but if i were you, i would think about preparing for spending a lot of time inside toward the end of the week. again this time frame friday afternoon overnight into saturday. there may be considerable wind with this one too. so we're watching it very closely and as we have new information that we're confident in, we're going to continue to pass it along to you. we'll have much more coming up a bit later. shawn and jim? >> of course with the potential for snow in the forecast, people are already preparing for the worst. marina marraco continues our coverage from bethesda. i understand people are already stocking up buying toilet paper and milk. >> reporter: they are. it is painfully cold out here. you can see behind me this strip in bethesda typically lined with restaurants and bars, people walking even on a monday night. not a single person. that's how cold it is. however tonight here in bethesda people prepping for what's to come at the end of the week.

the carts are packed, wheels rolling down the aisles. the shelves loaded for what could be the first remarkable snowfall of the season. are you ready? >> i'm excited. >> maybe no school? >> hopefully. >> and although it's too early to tell just how much snow and if it will even impact schools, folks are getting a head start. >> we were coming anyway for some other stuff and when we were on the way we remembered to buy snow melt. >> i figured that it's better to get it now before it runs out. >> i didn't even know it was coming until you guys told me. so now i have something to worry about. >> we went from grilled to shovels in just a bat of the eyes and a new app eyeing the dc area looking to profit off the

well as threats on social media. megan, the question tonight is do they have any suspects in mind here? >> reporter: in regards to those social media threats, they do have a juvenile suspect one that lives west of the mississippi, they also have another juvenile suspect who has been charged at this point. he does live here in prince william county. tonight school leaders say they called the meeting because some parents are keeping their students home from school. one parent let her zpr stay home on friday after several classmates didn't attend classes. >> she said thursday there weren't a lot of kids in her class. she went to several classes where there were only five kids in her class so a lot of kids staying home. >> reporter: police telling me there have been no more new threats at this point. prince william county police reassuring parents they will maintain heightened security at

the schools. for instance like plain close clothed detectives. they say at previous school shootings they don't advertise they're going to do it. police tonight asking parents not to feed into the sensation and asking parents to talk to their kids. >> he asked me in the car, he said you guys are having a town hall tonight. when are they going to talk to us, as the students really talk to them about this. >> the fact is in most of the cases we have communicated with parents within 10 or 15 minutes of a specific case being mentioned. what we want to do is make sure the information is accurate, that we give parents the information they need to act on, and most of all, as is usually the case, we are able to tell them that their children are safe in our school and that there is no credible threat at this point. >> reporter: there is one more threat that was stated for this week. we have been asked not to say

the date because the investigation is still ongoing. however, they have no plans to cancel school. in woodbridge, megan dice, fox 5 local news. >> the search for a gunman continues following a triple shooting in falls church. the shooting stemmed from a fight inside a state theater just as the concert was wrapping up. the gunman was standing several feet from police officers when he opened fire outside the theater. >> it was a person that was ejected from the state theater and as the officers arrived, two additional officers arrived. they heard 15 to 20 shots out here right besides the state theater after that fight. >> investigators have a vague description of the suspect. all three victims were taken to the hospital. >> two virginia men are due in court tomorrow to face allegations they tried to support isis.

tonight there is still no sign of the 12 marines missing since thursday. two helicopters carrying those marines crashed off the coast of hawaii during a training exercise. the coast guard does not plan to call off the search. meanwhile one of the missing marines is the brother of miss district of columbia 2014. tonight fox 5 is in woodbridge. two men are due in court tomorrow to face charges for supporting isis.

officers arrested one of the men friday at the richmond airport. >> the justice department said he was planning to travel to syria to join the islamic state. the other accused of helping him. >> reporter: according to these charging documents, the two men that were arrested thought they were in contact with people that had isis connections. instead, it turns out those people were actually fbi informants. the fbi had been monitoring the two suspects since at least november and both lived in the woodbridge area. the 25-year-old lived in this townhouse community with his family. >> we didn't really know what was going on. >> reporter: maybe ors witnessed the fbi searching the house on friday after both men were arrested. >> of course it's concerning. you've got family and everybody around here is very close. so it's concerning. >> i'm blown. we're really blown. >> reporter: charging documents show there are recorded

conversations where the second suspect allegedly talks about joining isis for jihad. he allegedly said he had no patience and wanted to go right away to, quote, chop their heads. and that he belonged on the battlefield. according to the department of justice, he was arrested friday in richmond. prior to boarding a flight with the intention of joining isis in syria. he's charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization. he's charged with aiding and abetting after allegedly putting the other man in contact with people he thought had ties to isis. >> it's really actually frightening and scary. we have tons of kids in this neighborhood. ware a really close neighborhood. >> reporter: this isn't the first time the community is dealing with the news of an arrest linked to terrorism. last year a 17-year-old was arrested and sentenced to 11 years in prison for running a

popular pro-isis twitter handle and helping an 18-year-old travel to syria and join the islamic state. the men are expected to appear in court here in alexandria on tuesday. if convicted they could face up to 20 years in prison. alexandra limon, fox 5 local news. >> we are following some developing news out of afghanistan. the search there continues for three americans who were kidnapped from an apartment in baghdad. they were reported missing on friday. officials believe a militia group there may be behind the kidnapping. it has been years since an american was kidnapped in iraq. >> new details about the final moments in iran for jason rizion. he's the iran bureau chief who was jailed there for more than 500 days. his brother is speaking out. he says at the last minute officials resisted allowing jason's wife and mother to leave

snowstorm that we could see later in the week. right now plows are getting ready to move into action and hardware stores are stocking up on winter supplies. >> we're going back to the breaking news we told you about at 10:00. oxon hill ambulance involved in a serious crash on the beltway. it flipped over when it was sideswiped and we know that two paramedics were injured. >> the car that hit the ambulance took off. police haven't found it yet. we believe this is video from another accident ha happened as a result of that. tisha lewis is live on the scene. she joins us live on the phone. what is the very latest? >> reporter: shawn and jim we do have some new information. initially we did think this was a hit and run. we had word just moments ago that the car that actually swiped the ambulance kind of sparking this accident was discovered about 200 feet down the road. i want to walk you through a timeline of what happened. the ambulance was traveling southbound, we're talking about a prince george's county

ambulance, traveling southbound on the beltway when a car swiped it, causing it to careen out of control and essentially overturn. it was then discovered. but in the meantime the ambulance struck say light pole which essentially toppled over and pierced another car that had pulled over. two paramedics were injured, a spokesperson with prince george's county fire and rescue says they have non-life-threatening injuries. if you look at this video that this is miraculous and it could have been much, much worse. the scene has been cleared and the last i would say in the last

5 to 15 minutes. so if you're traveling in the area or know anyone who is traveling in that area. but really it was a horrific scene and this could have been a very different story that we were telling tonight. >> let me ask you real quick. we are looking at that incredible video, we can see the light poll. it goes through the top of the vehicle and into the pavement. do we know the condition of the people who were in that vehicle and do we know what has happened to the people who were driving the car that actually side-swiped the ambulance. >> reporter: this is saul preliminary information. it appears the people who were in the car with the light pole are okay. they apparently were not in the vehicle when that happened. they had pulled over to the side and possibly to assist or possibly to see what was going on with this accident. so again that was the secondary incident that kind of happened after the initial accident.

again, it appears that the people who were traveling in that car where the light pole went through was not in the car at the time. >> and real quick, have police gotten to the car that sideswiped the ambulance? >> yes, they have. that car was discovered and this is according to the prince george's county fire and ems spok spokesperson, that car was discovered about 200 feet from the scene. initially investigators thought they were investigating a hit-and-run accident. it turns out that does not to be the case at this juncture. >> we see a lot of things like this and it's just amazing everybody is okay in that car so thank you very much for that report. >> today as you know is the day we celebrate the life and legacy of dr. martin luther king junior. >> bob barnard shows us how people honored dr. king today.

martin luther king junior's 87th birthday. his legacy and his voice very much alive here today, 48 years after his death by asassin's bullet. this peace walk here in southeast just one of many commemorations for dr. king all these many years later. at the mlk memorial along the tidal basin, a wreath-laying ceremony as family celebrate the life of the man and his crusade. >> it's nice that there is a memorial. i'm glad my children recognize it and understand, i think they understand the importance of it. >> reporter: across the city and throughout the nation it's a day of service. here volunteers picking up the trash others have left behind. >> it's the small things that count that make big things great and that's why i'm here. just contributing to my

aloha paycheck. a new report finding people in hawaii are the most likely to live paycheck to paycheck. the study looking at how much money is left over after covering bills like housing, food, utilities and health care. and in case you're wondering which state has the most cash left over, well, that's minnesota. stocks in your 401(k) getting a breather on monday after a brutal start to 2016. wall street closed. so far this year the dow, nasdaq and s and p 500 are all down big time. even though financial markets are closed, oil dipping below 29 bucks a barrel. it hasn't been this low in more than 12 years. and those sliding oil prices mean pump prices keep slipping as well. the national average for regular gas now under $1.90 a gallon. happy driving everyone. that he is a look at business.

>> so we are dealing with subfreezing temperatures outside right now and we are anticipating a snowstorm at the end of the week. >> but some other parts of the country have already seen a pretty heavy snowfall and caitlin roth is keeping her eye on those areas. >> we actually here in dc saw our first measurable snow of the ar yesterday. .3 inch at reagan national, not much. but it's a start for winter here in dc. new york city also experienced its first snowfall yesterday. light snow coming down on sunday, just like us. an even colder stretch of weather is expected this week in new york with temperatures in the 20s. bitter wind chills tomorrow as well. and here's what it looked like in hartford, michigan. you can see that truck on a major highway. heavy lake effect snow caused a

series of deadly chain reaction crashes. the white-out conditions were just too difficult for drivers to navigate. the state's department of transportation has been out in full force cleaning up the mess. up to 13 inches were recorded in parts of ohio, 19 inches in parts of new york. this is the first major event of the season for those guys and it is still snowing in the snow belt including cleveland and erie, pennsylvania. the question is are we really going to feel the effects with a potential snowstorm. i get to send it over to my friend sue palka. >> you gave me say warm fuzzy feeling by referencing erie, pennsylvania. they got a lot of lake effect snow. they're expecting to get 2 feet out of this one especially in some of the areas where the snow

belts start to set up. everybody wants to know what's going on here locally. we have the cold and yes we have the potential for this major snowstorm to finish up the week in the friday-saturday time frame we'll talk more about that in a moment. the first thing you need to know is this cold isn't going anywhere in a big hurry. it will be around tomorrow as well. a better cold start in the morning. that's why we have so many two-hour delays for this school's district. you can find them on our website and i think they've been scrolling here at the bottom. wind chills tonight could be as low as 20 degrees below zero to around zero overnight here locally. there's a possibility we get a little bit of light snow out of a clipper system on wednesday. so we are all paying attention to what's going on at the end of the week but i don't want that to take you by surprise. yes, we are watching potential for a really big snow in the friday-saturday time frame. short term we have to get through this wind chill. the wind chill advisory is in effect through the noon hour for all of areas you see here and that's a pretty good range.

you've already felt it. it's difficult to be out be aware of anyone who might be in need, a maybe or who might not have heat going. it feels like 4 below already in gaithersburg, 14 in frederick, 3 below in hagerstown where the winds are gusting that drops our temperature and a single digit reading here in dc and these are the air temperatures everybody into the teens. quite a cold shot all of a sudden we drop to about 13 degrees. but again it's the wind chill you want to be ready for in morning and that will likely be near zero if not below. the breeze continues out of the northwest. still on the breezy side tomorrow which is why that advisory will go into noon and we'll still pick up gusts up to 25 miles per hour. 29 degrees really well below where we should be for this time of year. the average is 43. but there will be a couple of days in which we will warm up just a little bit. wednesday 37 when the clipper is going to be moving on through.

down to 35 on friday which means any snow we get on friday into saturday will likely be a wet, heavy snow. so be thinking about that too. that's tough to shovel and you don't want to be injured doing that. the clipper possibly could bring us a light snow shower. there might be some measurable snow down through the tide water area for 10:00 on wednesday night. so that is something to factor in if you have travel plans that will take you down 95 wednesday evening. the late-week storm everybody is talking about that as well. the cold air has been the question all winter long. right now we think the cold air will be in place. our models are all agreeing on a big snow scenario friday into saturday and that gives us confidence that this is going to happen. we'll start to attach some snow totals tomorrow night, wednesday, because that's when the act sul low that will produce this storm is going to be getting on to the lower 48

and we'll have some good upper air data that we can sample to make sure the track doesn't change. the intensity or the speed at which this storm moves. and the rain-snow line quite frankly. these are still very viable questions that have to be answered and once we put those totals out, can't take that perception back very easily. we want you to know that we are concerned about the major snow that we could be seeing at the end of the week but also happy that it's a weekend and you can just sit back and let us tell the story for you and participate with us online as we continue to track this thing. we've got four days to go. we think the snow might be getting here a little earlier friday afternoon with a temperature of 35 that would be a wet snow. snow is likely to continue on saturday. the winds could be quite strong so we could have real big visibility problems on saturday. so be thinking about your plans for the end of the week an maybe making some initial preparations. sunday's temperature about 40. monday 43 degrees. so we'll keep an eye on all of this and track it and keep you updated on facebook as well.
