10:00 pm
>> right now at 10:00 a mrizard watch is posted for our area and gets underway in 48 hours and some of you are seeing snow tonight. i'll have the latest on all of it. >> we have team coverage from the tonight's clipper that caught the region off guard and created a mess on the roads to the potential blizzard that supposed to arrive friday. >> what preps are underway to ensure the snow is cleared as quickly as possible and what you should do right now to make
10:01 pm
sure your family is ready. this is "fox5 local news at 10". man it is a busy, rough night on the roads tonight and in the newsroom and weather department. i'm tony perkins. >> and i shawn yancy. >> and of course by now you heard the d.c. region is under a blizzard watch. tonight we're dealing with another storm and a clipper with plenty of traffic and as you can see through the tree there's a long line of cars that sort of are stuck in the snow trying to make it through. because the roads in many places tonight were not pretreated. they have not been cleared and we are hearing reports of accidents all across the regio region. >> this is similar to what we saw at one point before a couple years ago with ca carmageddon and the crews could not get out to treat the roads because of the rush hour. >> school delays are starting to roll in for tomorrow. they include so far, stafford
10:02 pm
county, fairfax county, spotsylvania county and fredericksburg city schools all on a two hour delay. we'll ep weep you updated. >> we begin with sue palka. sue, if this is what an inch of snow did tonight, we really should be worried about friday. >> you know, i actually was in the afternoon meeting today talking about this clipper toppling through, tony, and i said i predict we may have more problems with the snow tonight than we'll have on saturday and the differentiation have preparation and if you don't want to be stuck in it, don't get stuck in it. a lot of people were not paying attention to this. i heard from one of our long term photographs craig little top ten worst drive since i've been a photographer and teary bodash wrote to me it took me 2 1/2 hours to goat 7 corners from annandale #what a mess. it's like a carmageddon and
10:03 pm
we'll talk about what to expect friday and saturday and what is going on tonight. caitlin roth and wisconsin avenue caityln is it snow covered out there. i think i know the answer to that. what are you seeing out there right now. >> only an inch or so. as we know as all it takes. it's shiny so it's a skating rink out there. with lesser cars and slow enough it's when you have so many on the roads at once and rush hour it's at perfect storm of one inchch of snow the wrong time, wrong amount of people and roads were not pretreated and it's bun unbelievably cold the last few days it stikd quickly. this is the know we have on the ground. barely an inch in northwest d.c.. many snow totals were less than that. in fact, in arlington over an inch. reagan it was half an inch of snow. temperatures were so cold.
10:04 pm
that's what it stuck quick limit we'll keep up updated with all of the snow headed our way in the coming days it's a preview unfortunately a dangerous preview at that. >> that's the latest from out here. let's go back to shawn and tony inside. >> caityln. thank you very much. of course one of the things we've been talking about people were tweeting us about it on facebook and twitter is the gridlock and road conditions we're seeing across the region. >> joining us on the phone now to tell us about the conditions out there and why we have the rough evening we've had is the mayor of district of columbia mayor muirial bowser madame mayor, are you there. >> i am you can hear me okay. >> yeah it's a little soft we'll try to bring you up. thank you for calling in we appreciate it. we know it's a busy night. let me ask you this as of right now, what is your understanding as to what the road conditions akos the district are? >> well, we've as tony said, everybody who doesn't need to be on the road, stay inside and let our crews get to work. and i think that's the message
10:05 pm
actually across the region where we have very slick conditions. we are -- we have deployment of our vehicles out salting and clearing. and the vehicles need space to work. >> mayor bowser we had a picture a short time ago a live image of the rock creek par parkway. we saw cars sitting and tweets of one of those presidential motorcade having a rough time getting through the city. were crews caught off guard did the clipper come in too fast and we were not simply prepare prepared. >> we put out, shawn, a -- our crews out at 4 and we had some crews out since then salting. i do think that the snow came in and laid more snow than was forecast. but we've had our crews out since 4 salting roadways and
10:06 pm
we'll be doing that all through the night. >> mayor bowser let me ask you this, and it's kind of a rephrase of shawn's question, listen, i've been around a long time, i know these snow storms are very tough on mayor's of washington d.c.. but a lot of people are upset this evening. we're seeing the tweets and seeing it on social media because of the long commutes, through the city tonight, were the roads -- >> it's more than through the city, tony, people were traveling all over the region. >> absolutely. absolutely. i'm focusing on the city because we have you on the phone. were any roads pretreated or now didn't have the time. >> no, i just explained our crews have been out since 4 on the roads. >> since 4. >> yes. >> okay. >> mayor bowser let me ask you this. so this is just today, we know that we are anticipated to get mrizard conditions starting friday evening. what sort of preparations are in place to make sure we don't see a repeat this as we head into the weekend.
10:07 pm
well, we are looking at all of the forecasts coming in, shawn, we expect to give a full briefing tomorrow at 11:00 because we think that the forecast and when the storm will arrive is going to be very important to our city operations for schools and for government and we know the public transportation systems will rely on that as well. we, of course, will put safety first, and when we have a better idea of what the snow will arrive, to get out and move the snow. now, we are expecting -- if the forecast holds, upwards of 20" of snow and maybe up to 2 feet of snow. and we think that the rush hour that will be impacted is the friday evening rush. so, when we're more clear about when the storm will arrive we'll be able to make decision around that.
10:08 pm
so, this snow that came in today, it came in at the rush. and so, we want to be prepared for the first rush of the big snow. >> one of the problems, we'll let you go after this one of the problems with a snow that comes in during rush hour and this is what we saw in ca carmaggedon years ago and what we expect to see on friday a rush hour snow, the federal government plays a large role in that, as you well know, a lot depends on what they release their workers. are you able to have any influence and talk to them and circumstance well, here's what we think will happen anyone d.c., maybe you should do this? >> mayor: absolutely, our folks are engaged in those conversations and there's been some regional calls. and, obviously, all the officials want to make the right decision and we need to do tractor-trailer closer we get to the anticipated snowfall. so, we are already in those
10:09 pm
conversations. the last thing we want is for every you know entity to release at the same time. >> all right. d.c. mayor muirial bowser we appreciate you coming and appreciate the crews on the roadways now and we know they're doing their fwoingt get the roads cleared and salted and prepared as we continue on with what is just the beginning of a -- >> and thanks, shawn, already we're seeing as the snow is tapering, the forecast is that it could be in and out a little more quickly. now we're seeing it tapering. i'm on georgia avenue now. write can see plaque top, and now our crews are getting on the side streets. ki not emphasize enough if you don't have to be out, please stay off the roads so we can allow the crews to get to the main and residential streets. >> slirp good advice. thank you so much. we appreciate it and we will be talking to you over the next couple days.
10:10 pm
>> thank you, bye. >> the issue is some people don't want to be out but it's taking forever. >> these are live images wisconsin avenue. we can see a little blacktop. plenty of people out walking. be careful if you don't have to be out there, don't be out there. >> sue, let's turn to you. the mayor mentioned the forecast and i do want to point out, sue, and caityln, mentioned this last night, and it was talked about earlier today on "fox5", about this clipper system coming in during rush hour. right around 5 p.m. or so. >> and tony there was a winter weather advisory issued and this is widespread. i have a total commute west baltimore to high atville 3 1/2 hours. that's smh that's shaking my head. think probably was a little vigorous but an inch was expected and discussed and that winter weather advisory. but a lot of times people wait until they see the snow to get on the roads. it's a socio logical thing. any time it comes in it's a bad
10:11 pm
time. we want to show you totals. not much, half inch to inch or inch and a half in some places and arlington seemed hard hit with 1.2" and gaithersburg a half inch. my husband said it's a nightmare out there as well. winter weather advisory went into effect 6 frbg almost exactly when the snow started and it will end at midnight. they're not going to be extended it. here's what's left now and it's going to be pushing away. i'll put this in motion darker purples indicate where you had more significant accumulation. back edge almost to the beltwa beltway. it should be gone within the next hour or so. but here's a big part of why every single flake stuck. we hardly got to the freezing mark today when the snow started and it dropped into the 20s quickly and that's why everything covered out there and the road crews will have to get to work. so, problems in the morning with icy spots. let jump ahead to late night storm. jumping ahead what i'm showing
10:12 pm
you here all the winter storm watches and yes the brighter green color right here bulls eye on washington. we have a blizzard watch and this is to give you a heads up and concern that 35, 40 mile an hour winds even stronger could cause visibility problems as it gets going and winter storm watch nrs effect and it will begin friday night. when does this begin. tony said earlier it will be high impact beginning because it will likely come the evening rush hour. i'm telling people be ready by into and it will arrive after that 4, 5 or 6:00. either way goes downhill quickly and it's blowing and sdrivting snow and likely pou pouter outages and widespread significant accumulation and
10:13 pm
rough 1 to 2 feet we're saying now with major travel impacts all weekend long. this is forecast 3.0 and we have to expand just west of d.c. into parts of north west d.c. with 18 to 24" amount forecast there. maybe 12 to 18 on east side of z.c. and over across the bay we're looking at 6 to 12 and maybe 3 to 6 at beach as huge winds coast ali rotion a problem throughout as well. that's what we're looking at. and one last look at the storm as it approached friday night with model guidance on top that goes downhill quite quickly and may even be break into our top ten if not our top five snow storms of all time the way things are looking now. we'll be getting new information in throughout the broadcast and pass along trend we're seeing. there's still time for a track change that could change those amounts and we'll let you know everything we're seeing all cards are out and on the table for you too see.

10:27 pm
wedge it around the window or door around the fireplace. i know at my house the fireplace for some reason you can feel the draft coming in and so i used window film ther there. if you don't have that and can't get it a sheet works perfectly. >> typically carbon monoxide is around us every day. a treatment for exposure is fresh air. so again, any kind of you know attached garage don't warm your car in the garage. there's a potential for carbon monoxide. any fuel burping appliance or fireplace or wood stove. >> if you're stuck and strappeded on neighborhood street it's best to stay inside the car. because if you're hit, given the speed of those other vehicles you won't be injured. but if you're on a major highway then try extricate you yourself or park or move your car to the shoulder and stand away from the beltway where cars are going 45 or 50 miles
10:28 pm
an hour. >> throughout the weekend and the big snowstorm we'll be hairing more trips are from travel to pets to home preparedness and make sure everybody stays safe as the snow falls this weekend with the big snow and big storm that we're expecting tonight. obviously a big test. if you can heed warning stay home. >> that's the advice. you have netflix at home watch movies bundle up. >> but the problem friday -- it will depend on what the jurisdictions do and federal government does. >> do they close schools. >> yeah it's likely not going to start snowing until the afternoon. do they wait until that happens and then close. then you have problems. unless they decide we'll close early in the day. we're not eachp going to on. we know it's not going to snow until later we'll avoid this. >> after today, maybe they willing decide to close early. >> lesson learned i think. >> it will be tough. >> i want to mention this just in we mentioned school delays for tomorrow including fairfax

10:34 pm
a.m. or whatever to come to work, i turned on the tv and saw that people were still on their commutes home! i thought it was bad for me but not ten or twelve hours. >> that was the one we saw people abandoning their vehicles in middle of the roadways. >> that i think is january 25, 2011 carmageddon. >> they all start bleg together. >> all the geddons. >> we have seen car as ban donned too tonight. >> it's not the amount but how cold it was and how icy it's become. that's the deal. this storm we're expecting this weekend, will thb a history maker. well, we've gotten off to a cold start this weekend and i wanted to mention to you there's ice on the potomac from the last three night we had bitter cold air. and so that was a little heads up that the cold air we had around today is not only ice on the potomac chain link

10:39 pm
decision. >> we're a big family and that's what families do they praise you and they give you proper criticism when you need. it so, yeah, we get a lot of feedback from the communities there's a high expectation in the communities and we believe that's what makes it rich top live in this region. >> and school officials expect to get a lot of feedback and maybe criticism like they did last time during the snow. and come friday, fairfax country school officials will have a conference call before real early with the decision announced 4:30. as soon as that decision is made we'll let you know right here on "fox" 35 and also, just into the newsroom prince william country schools will be closed tomorrow. again, prince william county schools closed for thursday.
