10:00 pm
right now at 10:00, the blizzard of 2016. the monster storm has paralyzed our region. >> we're talking snow more than 2 feet deep in some areas whipping winds and bitter cold temperatures making it dangerous to be outside. >> we want drivers to stay off the road. we also want pedestrians to stay off the road. >> we have everything you need to know as you prepare to dig out. fox 5 storm team coverage continues right now. and we thank you for joining us tonight. i'm tony perkins. >> and i'm shawn yancy. right off the top tonight, incredible developments in the wake of this massive blizzard. let's take a look right now this is i-270 at germantown road. all of 270 in maryland is closed
10:01 pm
tonight as you look at the roadway right there you can see it is absolutely free of traffic at this point. we're talking the entire highway, nearly 35 miles if the beltway to i-70 in frederick. it's also closed from 6 the 5 to i-81. they both will remain closed tomorrow to all drivers. they're doing this so the crews can get on the roads and clear them of the snow and the ice. >> a few quick facts about this blizzard. more than 80 million people were in the storm's path nationwide. at least 18 deaths are blamed on the weather so far from car crashes, shoveling and hypothermia. some areas have seen up to 3 feet of snow. the storm has knocked out electricity to thousands of homes and businesses nationwide. fortunately the averages only numbers in the hundreds across our area. sue, what is the latest on this storm?
10:02 pm
>> i think everybody has experienced a jaw-dropping storm, and we are in the final stages of it now. but it has definitely deposited 15 in some places more than 30 inches of snow. i saw a report of about 36 inches. so this has been a huge snowstorm. got a great time lapse from one of my twitter followers. he set this up yesterday and watched the snow grow. even put titles in. by the way we think you have a lovely patio. last night we saw some good hotel. by the time we got to my hotel we had 6 or 7 inches. it went gang busters overnight. we had thunder snow between 6:00 and 7:00 this morning and that snow continued to pile up. i know chantilly he says he's still climbing. you're probably in the vicinity of 25 inches now. we want to thank him for that and show you some of the records
10:03 pm
that have been broken today. let's go to the weather maps because we have some interesting stats to show you. some people are going to quibble with that number you see at reagan. that might get adjusted but right now it ties for fourth biggest snowstorm we've ever seen here at dc. dulles the second biggest snow we've ever had and bwi 29.2 inches. the greatest snowstorm ever for baltimore and this is history in the making. it is almost over. we have been tracking this all day for you non-stop here on fox 5 and i promised you when we got to 10:00 i thought it would be light snow or flurries, that's exactly what we're seeing as this is shrinking up quickly. let me put it in motion and you can see for yourself in the last, this is looping for the last three hours. the snow is really starting to wind down. so it's not going to be much longer. but what you may notice is that those winds aren't going to relax in a big hurry. we will still have blowing and
10:04 pm
drifting of this huge amount of snow that we have around the region. let's give you an idea of some of the totals and we'll allow you check in. you know that you've got about 25 inches out there. for some reason, i'll try one more time. guess what? oh, now it finally worked. leesburg. 28.5 inches of snow there. let's check down towards the prince william county area. mannasas 18.5 inches. we're looking at green belt at 20.5. that's a new report just coming in a few minutes ago. all of these little round circles are snow reports that have been received by the national weather service.
10:05 pm
the last couple of hours will result in a little bit more light snow and flurries. the exception of maybe lower southern maryland you might still have a pretty good band sinking down toward the lower neck and the lower portion of the delmarva. a few more hours and all of this is going to be off the coast. the winds may linger a bit longer and you'll really feel it if you're out there. we don't have necessarily blizzard force winds out there. stevensville is up to 25. our visibility is greatly improved as a result of the lighter snow and as a result of the winds getting a little better. your pictures have been amazing and i also have a beautiful satellite image. back to shawn and tony.
10:06 pm
>> thank you very much, sue. >> jennifer davis is in fairfax county. she has some images of fire trucks out there. and was actually witnessed an ambulance get stuck in the snow a little bit earlier. tell us what you've got now. >> reporter: hi, i just want you to know i'm here but i'm stepping away because i want you to see this pickup truck in the middle of the intersection here on route 50. he's been spinning his wheels there for a few minutes. i think he's finally just pulling out and getting on his way. he was stuck there for quite a while. he's the second car in the last five minutes that we've watched get stuck in this very spot. so we want people to know it is treacherous out there and i know you're probably sick and tired of hearing us say it. but clearly you can see they just fishtailed a little bit there. the roads are not ready for cars yet. they just are not ready for you and you need to give the crews some time. here comes a plow right now two plows actually. the storm seems to be just subsiding here in fairfax.
10:07 pm
we had to look under the street lights to tell there's so much snow blowing around. finally maybe we can change our hashtag to the winter sleeps. take a look at some video from earlier today you can see how hard crews have been working and they have been struggling as well. station 21 right next to us here at this gas station has been running non-stop calls and tony is right we watched an ambulance get stuck a few hours ago. it took eight firefighters 20 minutes to dig the ambulance out and they had to send another crew to the call. so it is treacherous out there. there's a fuel tanker that flipped over on 66. the roads are just not ready to go on. so many people working hard tonight, it's not just the road crews but it is also hotels. we have been at a hotel here in fairfax, the hilton garden inn. they have 25 workers who stayed away from their families manning
10:08 pm
the hotel. a lot of the people staying there are plow drivers and emergency workers who can't get home. some of those workers, we talked to one today a mother she brought her two children with her to ride out this storm. here's what they told us. >> it's fun. so last night i worked, we were busy, the guests were awe sosmt and then we had dinner downstairs served by our hotel for the employees and we just had a snow day. we had fun, stayed up late playing games downstairs, singing karaoke we're building a snow man in the back. >> it's been really fun because there's a lot of fun things including the pool and also you get free room service. >> free room service really fun. that little girl so cute. riding the roads, not. we're looking at that pickup truck. i'm not sure you can see, it is still struggling to get up fair ridge drive there. it's now moving about 5 miles per hour.
10:09 pm
here's what vdot says. they've got 4,000 trucks still out there. now is when they can really kick their work into high gear. they say at this point the main roads are in moderate condition. the back roads your neighborhood street is moderate to severe. it's going to take a lot of time for them to get to this. so stay off the roads if you can tomorrow. go walk can, go talk to your neighbors, go sledding. but leave your cars where they are, let the crews try and tackle those roads and make some head way and we'll see where we are back on monday. >> thank you so much. get inside and get warm. >> we want to get the latest now from brody logan. he's been riding along this evening with the dc national guard. he is on capitol hill right now. hey, brody. >> reporter: yeah the national guard dropped me off. they had some serious stuff to attend to. they went to get a dc police officer who needed some help getting in to work for the night shift so we had to make room for them. but earlier when we did our ridealong with the national
10:10 pm
guard, it was great we were able to deliver some supplies to a sheller in southeast. and after we were live a mother saw our live shot and told her son to go down to the shelter to get some food and here's what he said. >> reporter: what brought you down here? >> my mom said she saw you guys on the news so i decided to come down here. she said it was a heating center and it's cold outside and it's warm in there so i might as well go back in. >> reporter: what's it like inside? >> it's toasty and warm and blankets and snacks and it's really invite prognose so i recommend coming down to the recreation center. >> reporter: yeah so. if anyone out there needs help, that's a great place to go. they have an open-door policy. anyone can walk up. it's kind of cool he came up and said hi because he saw the shot. this is capitol hill some of the bars are open and there are a few people milling about in
10:11 pm
the road doing some handstands and various things. i just want to give a message to these folks they're warming from the inside, the bars are open here i understand that. but the instagram likes are not worth your life. there are personnel that need to get through this road. if you're going to do it, do it on the sidewalk, do it out in the snow. the bars are open here. the ugly mug here just down the street is actually pretty packed more people than i thought would be there. so have a good time. the winds have subsided but just be safe. you don't need to be out in the middle of the street. >> that is certainly good advice. those people look like they are having an interesting time out there. >> they're doing it for instagram 100 %. you guys are doing this for instagram. >> did they laugh and say no. >> reporter: they said they did not take any photos. but i see one of them just had her phone out.
10:12 pm
>> all right, brody logan from capitol hill. thank you sir. >> we want to talk about the roads now. gregory johnson with the maryland state highway administration joins us now on the phone. mr. johnson thanks for joining us. >> you're very welcome. let me ask you how are the roads right now? we know an unprecedented move today the governor in maryland shut down i-270 and i 70 north of that. give us an idea of what you guys and your crews are facing out there tonight. >> the roads are still in pretty tough shape. we have all our forces out. we're trying to get some of on you crews a rest break so we can go back at it tomorrow full force. but one of the problems we were facing is that a number of trucks were running into problems on routes and we have to go get them unstuck and divert our forces away from other routes in need of attention. so closing 270 and 70 we hope
10:13 pm
will be a great help in getting things cleared. >> do you recall a measure like that ever being taken before? >> yes. i-70 was closed back in i believe it was in the '90s due to blizzard conditions and actually we had to pull our crews off the road because of the blizzard conditions were so intense. and the sight distance was just minimal. it has before. >> let me ask you right now how many crews, do you still have crews on the road right now? we're showing some live images around montgomery county maryland right now. we can see i-270 we saw parts of the beltway. do you have crews out right now? are you trying to wait until all of the snow has fallen? >> no. we still have crews out now. what we don't want to do is get
10:14 pm
behind the storm. we want to make sure we're staying on top of things so don't get hard pack of snow on the roadways. so we still have crews out. they're still plowing and salting. we have some crew members that are resting. we also have our contractor force is out there helping us. so we're still out there fighting the storm and we're always going to have a presence out on the road until we get everything cleaned up. >> all right greg. that is good news for all of us to hear. everybody who lives in maryland, we certainly hope folks will heed the warning stay off the roads and we certainly appreciate what everybody is out there doing to keep us safe. thank you. >> thank you. >> we want to stay in maryland now and get updated what's happening in prince george's county. that's where you'll find ronica cleary. ronica? >> reporter: hey guys. i am in largo maryland right now.
10:15 pm
we have been up and down prince george's county since the start of this storm. we actually just saw two plows go by. we have been told that they are in a plowing situation right now. they are taking to the roads plowing them as much as they can. they had to stop down for a while, we did have some white-out conditions here in prince george's county throughout the late afternoon when the conditions were very, very treacherous out here. but it looks like even though they did have to get off the roads at some point that they are back and they are plowing in. when i spoke with a woman with the county she explained to me that they are really hoping to make up for lost time after midnight tonight. that's when we expect the snow to stop. it is still snowing here in prince george's county. now, one of the things that really took our breath away today was in suitland on 4600 block of silver hill road. now, there there was a very big fire at a carpet store.
10:16 pm
now, that fire, when we left it was much more under control than when it was first there. there were firefighters on the scene. there was a roof that collapsed at that carpet warehouse. we still do not know the cause of the fire, but certainly there will be an investigation. and while i was there at the fire, we have some video from when that fire first took place and now what i think what you're seeing is from when we were there when those firefighters were in place. those conditions were pretty treacherous at that time. the wind was just brutal. and when they're there trying to put out that fire with those fire hoses and then you have the wind blowing back those firefighters were really in a tough situation today getting that fire under control. i did have the opportunity to speak with the fire chief who helped paint a better picture for us to understand what happened there. i think we should have some sound ready for you now.
10:17 pm
>> the fire investigators have been called the roof has collapsed and it's difficult to get in the building. most likely we'll be trying to essentially drown it and we're not going to get in there this evening. firefighters are relatively close here so the response time was pretty quick. within five minutes they were here. the difficulty was any other units coming in. we did have one ladder truck getting stuck was not able to make it here to the scene. we're in the process of getting those units dug on the now. >> reporter: so thankfully we do not believe there were any injuries at that fire. you can see in this video here this was the fire when it first took place. pretty scary stuff especially if you can imagine there aren't people on the roads to report such a fire. so we're not sure if that caused a delay in the reporting. but no injuries to report at this time and thankfully much more under control than in that video you're seeing now.
10:18 pm
so happy to report that after a very long and treacherous day here in prince george's county. back to you guys. >> thank you so much. as we head to break i want to let everybody know the dc central kitchen needs your help. they need help shoveling their trucks out so they can get meals out to people in need. if you can help, show up tomorrow morning, 9:30 a.m. their address is 425 second street northwest and they are saying please bring a shovel. >> we'll have much more of our coverage of the blizzard 2016 straight ahead. stay with us.
10:19 pm
10:20 pm
10:21 pm
once again here's a live shot of 270 which is shut down tonight by order of the governor of maryland. so that crews can take care of that road during the overnight
10:22 pm
hours. we were talking just a short time ago with representatives in maryland about that. indeed, it will be shut down all night long. >> it is very strange to see it so quiet. i understand we have snow. but normally it's like jam packed with cars. >> very, very odd. >> let's go to matt ackland. he is live in dupont circle in the district tonight. matt you've had some interesting stories yesterday and today. >> reporter: yeah, yeah. and you know i was just going to say what you were saying. it's 10:30 saturday night dupont circle. and it is quiet here. that's exactly how the mayor wants it to be. starbucks, it seems like they never close but this one here, one of the busiest i would say in dc has been closed since about 3:00 yesterday. you can see man just look how thick it is. a lot of people have been going to a restaurant right behind the camera so there's a place to actually walk here. i talked to mayor bowser earlier
10:23 pm
today and she talked about the effort to keep the streets clear. she said that the focus after the snow starts to fall is to really get after the main thoroughfares and also the side streets. in fact now where i am is right along 19 street. it hasn't been plowed at all. they're going to possibly get to that tomorrow. but i want you to take a listen to mayor bowser. we talked to her not too long ago about the need for people to stay off the streets. >> i don't want them to walk around either. i want them not to drive and not to walk around so that the vehicles can get to the streets. we're going to be able to deploy a lot of resources tomorrow. heavy equipment. after it stops snowing and we can really work on clearing not just the mains, the main roads but our residential streets as well. >> reporter: shawn and tony not only is there snow everywhere but it is brutally cold outside. and we saw an example of just
10:24 pm
how cold it was. i want to show you a picture here. this was taken oh i would say about through or four hours ago. my photographer can you come from around the camera. so doug was getting ready for a live shot. i was actually inside. when a gentleman approached you, a homeless veteran right? and he needed help. i know you're hesitant to talk about this because you don't want to take any credit and you said this is what anybody would do. would you take me through what you did. >> we were putting a fresh load of gas from cans into the truck and a guy came up and said he needed help. he indicated that an awning had collapsed on him. his hands were black and he had no gloves on him and he was a white guy and he said he was just chilled to the bone and didn't know what to do. and the few places that were open weren't anxious to make their place a warming center for
10:25 pm
homeless people. anyway, i called 311 it was taking forever so it was busy and i called 911 and explained what was going on and they wanted to make sure he wasn't having a heart attack or something like that and they said they would send somebody out. and 15 minutes or so later an ambulance showed up and put a blanket on him and took him away. >> reporter: you put him in the truck right away, correct? >> yeah, i did. he was sort of hanging out under another overhu could tell he was bitter cold and i said hop in the truck and we'll wait for the ambulance in the truck. and he curled up in fetal position in the front seat and he was asleep in like a minute. and then the ambulance showed up i woke him up and we walked over to the ambulance together. >> reporter: doug, i mean, those people know at the station you're one of the finest guys out there and i know you don't want to take credit for this but i came at the tail end of this when dc fire got here they
10:26 pm
threw that blanket over him and he kept thanking you over and over and they ushered him to the ambulance and drove away. but you just made me think i wonder how many other homeless folks are stuck out in this. and he was in bad shape. >> he was in bad shape and it was a striking reminder of what these people go through. >> reporter: for sure. shawn, tony, i told this story earlier and i put ut on facebook and on twitter and so many people have retweeted it. it really also shows not only doug, all these people the firefighters the police officers who are out trying to keep people safe. it's a dangerous job. it's very cold. and these people do it not every day to keep us protected but they're out here in the elements. and when they came up they were just as helpful as can be wrapped that blanket and get
10:27 pm
him, i don't know if they took him to a hospital maybe a homeless shelter. but he was grateful to have a warm place. >> it was nice to see that. i guess everybody who is -- if you see somebody out there say something. i believe you can call 311 in the city to report someone who may be out there who needs the help like that, matt. so it's just wonderful. that's what we should be doing. taking care of each other. >> reporter: i know you have to go, but also there are warming shelters in all eight wards if you just check. snow.dc.gov. you can see where the closest warming center is. also 311, and if you have to 911 to get these people off the streets. >> absolutely. matt ackland thank you. we appreciate the update tonight. >> reporter: thank you. >> before we go to the break i'm getting some tweets and messages people asking about your arm. >> it's a new fashion statement. >> thank you everybody for asking. i actually fell down the stairs in my home last weekend.
10:28 pm
today it just swelled up really large. and i learned that it's a type of bursitis. it's somewhat painful. so this is just over it because there's a bag of ice under there and i am icing it and keeping it elevated. >> and you're going to get it looked at. >> yes. >> stay with us. it's 28 after the hour. we'll have more on the coverage of the blizzard of 2016 coming up in just a moment.
10:29 pm
10:30 pm
10:31 pm
10:32 pm
>> welcome back everyone to our blizzard 2016 coverage at 10:31 tonight. here is a live look from fair oaks, virginia. a car is off to the side of the road there. it looks like they got stuck we believe this is a police vehicle an officer out there helping them get out of there. this is one of the reasons we've been saying don't get on the roads right now. even though it looks like it's clear, you might be able to get through those plow trucks are out there. avoid it if at all possible right now. >> speaking of the roads in virginia, we want to get an update at what's happening out there. joining us by phone is michele holland. she is a spokesperson for the virginia department of transportation. good evening to you. >> hi, good evening. >> thanks for joining us again. why don't you give us the latest first on our area here and what the road conditions generally speaking and on the number of accidents you've reported recently. >> at this point there still continues to be a very serious storm and all of the roads in
10:33 pm
northern virginia still remain in severe condition. they are still snow covered, there are still high winds and low visibility out there and it's really important that people do continue to stay off the roads until our crews have had the opportunity to get out there and clear the roads and make them passable. >> michele, give us an idea you know, what is the plan as we head into the overnight hours and into tomorrow? we know you guys are asking everyone to get off the roads. what is the plan? >> well we want people to stay off the road all day tomorrow as well. we're expecting the snow and the high winds to continue through the night through early morning hours. and once that is done, then our crews are really going to be out there and making progress towards clearing the roads. because a lot of what we've been clearing today has just been blown back on to the road due to the high winds. so tomorrow once the storm ends is really when our goal is to
10:34 pm
make a lot of progress. >> let's talk a little about secondary roads, neighborhoods. of course that's where the bulk of the people are right now and of course they always want to know when can we expect to see plows, when might we get out. we talked to some representatives in loudoun county virginia earlier. they were saying in all likelihood secondary roads would not be gotten to until monday. is that generally the same for elsewhere in northern virginia? >> within northern virginia we've been concurrently plowing, clearing snow from interstates as well as residential streets. we've been working very hard to keep up with all of the roads and we'll continue to do that. but the reality is due to the amount of snow that we've received and the conditions out there, as i said a lot of what they're plowing is just getting blown back into the streets and there is so much snow to deal with at this point. but you know, we've had a focus on residential streets as well as interstates and we're going
10:35 pm
to continue to do that. but we really need people to justin to be patient and to stay safe. and the best way to do that is to stay off the roads so that we can get out there and get them clear. >> hey michelle let me ask you quick. earlier tonight we spoke with governor mc. is there any talk where you might put the snow. >> we're continuing to work through the details with what to do with the snow once it has been plowed. it's going to depend on weather conditions the upcoming week. i don't really have the specifics on that. i can say that we still have nearly 4,000 trucks out there to deal with the snow that's out there and we're going to continue to work this until the snow is clear and the roads are safe again. >> michelle holland with the
10:36 pm
virginia department of transportation. we'll talk to you again tomorrow. >> staying in virginia, let's check in with alexandra limon. she is live in mannasas. the last time we saw her she was having fun in the snow. are things getting better or worse in terms of the conditions? >> reporter: well, that depends. we're getting less wind and less snow, but it is getting colder and colder out here. so not really sure what to tell you on that one shawn. you were just talking about the road conditions what that spokesperson of the department of transportation out here in virginia and surprisingly we've seen several drivers every half hour or so pass by and let me show you why i think that's happening. just down the road from us here on battle view parkway in mannasas, people are snowed in here and it's very deceiving. because when you look out your window you see this. these huge piles of snow. more than 2 feet that came down
10:37 pm
and then the accumulation on top of that from the plows from the wind, all of that. and then you look out and you see the road. it looks completely plowed. it looks like it's in pretty good condition that's because there have been plows coming by every half an hour. they still have thousands out on the road in virginia. the problem is once they pass by it was snowing so heavily that it would quickly accumulate once again and underneath that you just have a sheet of ice. and to put things into perspective to tell you what a bad idea it is for you to get out here on the road, the virginia state police department has been tweeting out their numbers and they said they've actually had more than 5,600 calls for service from this storm. 5,600. 1,300 of those were for crashes. and 1,600 were for disabled
10:38 pm
vehicles, maybe ones that went into these snoek banks couldn't get out. we've seen cars catching on fire, things like that. that is why you don't want to get on the road. we continue to see plowing coming by and unfortunately we've seen some of those plows get stuck themselves. these are the crews. the equipment that people are trying to keep things safe for everyone. but if people get out on the road and get into crashes or cause other problems it just makes things more difficult for everyone all the way around. so if you have the option which pretty much everyone does to stay home or wherever you are please, please do that. >> alexandra limon. >> we'll be back with more of -- what show is this? >> our coverage. >> our special coverage of the blizzard of 2016.
10:39 pm
we'll have more coming up in just a little bit. >> we're going to give you a look at some of the pictures you guys have been tweeting us all weekend long using that hashtag #thewinterawakens. we invite you to continue to send in your pictures.
10:40 pm
look, i know you're a cow and all. and you may not know what i'm talking about, but, uh. the yogurt made from your milk, is delicious.
10:41 pm
mmmm, yoplait.
10:42 pm
10:43 pm
all right. these are live pictures from dupont circle. matt was saying how odd it is saturday night nobody out there. apparently some folks are in the bars but it is pretty kwii e and that is the way district officials want things to be so they can continue with the cleanup from this blizzard. >> just a few snowflakes coming down out there. hopefully we will be putting winter to sleep soon. >> jim lokay is here now. you've got an interesting story coming up. >> it kind of relates to sports. this has to do, it's kind of a good news and bad news story. george mason had to postpone the game or move it up because they didn't want people to get stuck in the snow. their opponent was duquesne
10:44 pm
university. they headed out of town. the bad news is the team didn't get very far. they ended up getting stuck in the pennsylvania turnpike. they stayed there for 22 hours. >> on the turnpike? >> in the bus? >> there was about 500 cars backed up. you just saw car after car after car. they were doing selfies on the bus and there as actually tour bus of middle school kids ended up going on the bus and hanging out with the players for a while. they sent those pictures out as well. we had this one here where they decided we're on the turnpike let's drop down and do some snow angels. they got hungry and they called up dominos they said can you meet us they walked up to an overpass in the hopes that dominoes would deliver to the
10:45 pm
overpass. the good news is they started moving around 9:00 tonight. they should be back home soon enough. that was a serious situation with all of those cars stopped on the turnpike. so fortunately things are clearing up. >> i have been on that turnpike many, many times i was hoping you were saying they were able to pull off on one of the hotel. >> i suspect they didn't get the pizzas but i would love to know if they did. >> i think some of the staffers were able to walk to a grocery store and take care of them. >> that would have been the perfect time for amazon's drones to be working. >> some of the live pictures
10:46 pm
we're beginning to see the snow beginning to taper off. hey sue, and gwen. >> we're going to do the last one of our last big weather casts as we're on the air for another 45 minutes or so. every time we see ronica i notice there's a little more snow in her picture because she's closer to the 95 corridor where we still have a little bit of snow lingering which we'll show you in a moment. it really is winding down big time folks and we'll get to all of that in a moment. i wanted to share a beautiful satellite imagine -- image that we got today. showing this incredible historic snowstorm off the coast and if you look really closely down towards ocean city that's where the spin is. and all that stuff that looks like mountains is actually thunderstorms around that system. we had a little thunderstorm come through here between 6:00 and 7:00 this morning that was quite startling for a lot of
10:47 pm
people. the sea monster is heading back out to sea. let's check out some of the pictures we have on twitter. >> i wonder what kind every cars they are. >> that is going to be a workout tomorrow trying to get that out. >> where does this rink in terms of the top five biggest dc snowstorms? officially right now they measured 17.8 at reagan national which is the official measuring statement for dc. don't send me mean tweets. we know you don't think 24 was a 17.8 snowstorm at your house because it wasn't. but right now it's tied for

fourth place with the 2010 snows. >> they may still be measuring. >> the thing too is people measure at their homes and they say i have 25 inches or whatever but we know that you have to measure somewhere where it is just really level. so board type things that gives a lot of variance. >> it's the second biggest ever for dulles and the biggest for bwi. here are a couple of others. check them out. those are big numbers. >> big numbers. mannasas 29.5 inches. >> pushing 30 inches of snow across the area. i don't want this to startle you, but the blizzard warning is still in effect for our area. this is precautionary and this hopefully will get dropped but that is not because the snow is going to continue and the visibility will be so poor from the falling snow. it's from the blowing snow. and the drifting snow.

and if you haven't heard this ended up being quite a nightmarish scenario for new york. they had very little time to prepare for blizzard conditions especially on long island and all those areas that border the atlantic and all the way up to nantucket and cape cod they did not have as much time to get ready for it as we did. also terrible conditions at the beaches today with coastal flooding and a full moon. the last high tide was at 7:30. we are thinking about you at the beaches and glad to see the winds will soon shift. this is what is left on storm tracker radar. it has really in the last three hours, i'm going to put it in motion you can see where it is really shrinking. >> those heavier bands well out of the way now. things finally getting a lot better. >> so it's just another hour or so with these flurries. you'll be hard-pressed to notice

have those winds. the good news the snow will have stopped, we'll gradually see the winds diminish late into tomorrow night. >> but that blowing and drifting will continue too. >> still breezy as we dig out tomorrow only topping out at about 32 degrees here. maybe a few spots in the mid 30s. that looks a little bit optimistic. you know what's going to be next as we look at next week this snow cover will gradually melt down and each night we'll have a little bit of a refreeze to deal with. here's your 7-day forecast. at least some 40s in the tuesday-wednesday time frame should help out. we're still watching tuesday for some rain or snow showers. thursday about 36, next weekend looks like it should be a little bit more settled. maybe a couple of rain showers on saturday with a temperature of 44 degrees. that is your 7-day forecast. are we back to the anchors or going to a break? >> let's go back up to shawn and tony. >> come back to the anchors and
