5:05 pm
more inches than expected. exp right off the coast of delmarvad if you see a tiny little spin clouds, that's the counterclockwise flow around iti it almost looks like there's a little bit of an eye there like you would see in a hurricane. hr >> we'll call it the snow hurricane of 2016. >> i know, it really was impressive. imagine, that image cure situate of noa. we appreciate them allowing us to use it.se i it really is remarkable. rem but it's also a dangerous storm. we have so am pictures and and reports of flooding out of south jersey, out of delaware. a lot of people comparing it to the damage they saw during sandy back in 2012. >> that is really a big deal because of the beach erosion. e people there getting hit quite q hard with this storm system. >> the good thing is i think they did see the waters recede as the winds change, so that's
5:06 pm
good. but the cleanup will have to continue as if a tropical system made landfall across the new jersey and delaware coast.oast luckily for us, we didn't see that. we did see some impressive wind gusts.sts. i think the highest one was ocean city maryland, 77-mile ana hour wind gusts yesterday morning. > that's a tropical system for sure. >> for sure. but let's get back to the snow totals.tota here we are at all three airports, 17.3 inches at reagana airport making it the fourth largest storm in history. dulles, at bwi thurgood marshal 29.2 rating it as top number one, top dog storm for them. >> it's amazing. reagan's number, suspicionly a little bit lower.li however, it didtt make us the fourth biggest -- it did produce produce the fourth biggest snowstorm on record, but it's tied. i know you were here with this, gwen, snow magged on.d o >> oh, yes..
5:07 pm
> the same exact amount from fo six years ago. that is pretty remarkable that we had the same amount of snow. yeah, just one tenth of an inchc more is all we needed to break it. >> couldn't do it, i guess. > ultimate doppler radar so much quieter. >> that is going to hold us sted into your monday with sunshine w as well. wel you're going to see just a few clouds.ouds tonight our biggest concern iss the temperature. >> yeah, 33 in washington.in we briefly have gotten above freezing. that's excellent.nt. of course we're moving towards sunset so temperatures will drop pretty quickly and we are expecting a cold night ahead. ae even though we are right around freezing, by 8:00 we drop into the 20 #-s and this is whens is we're going to see widespread refreezing. this is always an issue after snow. cold nights usually follow snow, refreezing of left over moisture follows the chill. by 11:00 we're in the teens. 9:00 a.m. monday morning as some
5:08 pm
of you head back to work, but temperatures are only in the teens. we warm into the 20s by noon and then we'll struggle to get into the mid-30s by tomorrow night. n our overnight lowe's include some single digits for our areaa to the north and to the northwest. just be aware of that. ly 8-degrees over gaithersburg.gait we've got 6 for frederick, 0 for winchester, the same for manassas.mana 11 for fredericksburg. 15 in the d.c. corridor. at least we get a decent rebound. the sunshine will come out again tomorrow. for a period there we'll see a decent amount of melting. m we need daze of this obviously o with the amount of snow that we have. 36 for the high tomorrow. t but we do get some days of thata in the seven day forecast, gwen. we do then once again monday night another night whereher temperatures are going to be blow freezing. fre we benefit with the sunshine onn both day, but we end up with the refreeze that we have to be concerned with. w and tuesday we have some question marks going on there, caitlyn.itly >> a chance of some showers.
5:09 pm
doesn't look like anything heavy, rain and possibly some snow showers, too. we've been working obviously all weekend and all week.l we have to get centered back to work. i don't think i've even lookedoe beyond what was happening at the moment in the past few days. > yes, it is time to change things around. >> thanks, guys very much. we are awaiting a pressress conference from d.c. marmoreal.m buyser. >> good evening, everybody. my name is muriel bowser. i'm the mayor of washington, d.c. we are located in the frank fra reeves center here in washington, d.c. in ward 1 to provide a regular update on d.c.'s digout from the blizzard of 2016. let me start by saying we're making a lot of progress. p we are nearing the end of day one of the digout which started shortly after the snow stoppedy
5:10 pm
this morning. our crews worked all night and all day and we have deployed most of the 400 new pieces of equipment that i mentioned to you this morning and much of it dispatched from rfk stadium. some of you have started to see blacktop and that's good. it's mostly on our majorajor roadways and we're beginning to get into the secondary roadwayss and into the neighborhoods as well. while we have made some progress, there is still a lot t more to do and we will work to continue to clear our major arteries. a the look of the blacktop you're seeing in am cases we still have restricted width on those lanes.thos so either we don't have the full number of lanes that we should, or we have some -- also somee concerns about how we get through intersections and turn intersections and side lines an the rest.. so there's still a lot of work r that has to be done on the major arteries.
5:11 pm
at the same time we are gaining access, as i mentioned, to the secondary roads and residential streets. we are evaluating our ability to collect trash right now for this week, but we have determinedned that we will not pick up trash on monday or tuesday. t we will not pick up trash on monday or tuesday. t we will advise on the remainder of the week just as soon as possible. we, director gail heart talkedal to you earlier about the forecast for the rest of the week, which will have an impact on our cleanup, but it will alss have an impact on our ability ta get into alleys. a so thallt is why we will come ae talk to you when we have a clearer picture of what the ress of the week will look like. we expect that with the temperature dropping tonight and
5:12 pm
for every night this week that we will see continued slick and dangerous roadways. so continue to stay off of the road. let me say something else about shoveling. we saw a lot of people out today. i got the chance to get out today and talk to neighbors as well and we want to remind all l of our folks to please go out as you are able and shovel your walkway and sidewalk. please remember the safety tipst for shoveling. remember to stay hydrated and to take breaks and to do it in shifts. let me also thank all of the residents, volunteers whoho stepped up to help us with the d.c. snow resident teams. 3100 volunteers have stepped up to the plate and 1,000 folks
5:13 pm
spread out across the city to help people with shoveling. it is an all volunteer effort. and so i want to thank them. the let me also thank the am people who didn't call us to tell us us they were volunteering to help a neighbor and who just stepped up and helped anyway. a so just look at your blocks. if you see a sidewalk that hasn't been shoveled or walkwayw to a house that hasn't been shoveled, that's a sure sign of someone in need. so please try to help a neighbor. let me also remind business owners, people want to come and pay the nice your businesses, but they can't do it if they get there safely. please shovel your walks. we want all of our commercial cm corridors to be open for business. and let me turn now to our operational status. i announced earlier that d.c. public schools will be closed tomorrow. so d.c. public schools is closed
5:14 pm
monday. ii now annoyancing that we are going to close d.c. governmentt tomorrow, monday. we want to have tomorrow to continue to keep cars off the road so that we can clear those major arteries and also clear ce the places where am people who come to our downtown would normally park. metro announced that it will have limited service beginning tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. underground stations on three lines including green, yellow and orange will be in operationo until midnight and metro representatives are here and can provide additional information about that. we will also -- are happy thatht in 10 locations across the city we're going to offer tomorrow t school lunches and breakfast,
5:15 pm
breakfast and lunch for kids at 10 locations across the city cit from the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and we will make those locations available on our snow. d.c. golf website. i'm joined today by members of my team who are participating in our response to this blizzard and will see our recovery from o this blizzard as well. let me acknowledge the city administrator, are should young, the deputy mayor for public safety and deputy city administrator chris shorter, the d. director late comes sure, ate admiral chris weaver, the chiefw of police, cathy lanier. the chief of fire and ems, gregory dean and the leader of o our national, the d.c. national guard general schwartz. if there is anybody i've miss, s let me thank you and all of the
5:16 pm
people who support our team andd it's a lot of them. a lot of d.c. government workers have been on 12-hour shifts awaa from their families and sleeping on cots for the several days and i want to thank them. i want to especially thank them for showing up and really being serious about getting the government back open. ope i also want to thank someome contractors who we have hired and who have also stepped up to the plate to enhance our ability to recover from this storm. s i think a few of them i'm going to go see in a belittle they came down from massachusetts and have been dispatched to neighborhoods in ward 7 and ward 8 to make sure they're all cleaned up. let me now turn to director dwell heart who can provide any additional operational update. >> thank you madam mayor.
5:17 pm
my name is geller i am the director of homeland security sc and emergency management. the mayor caught most of what wa we're doing on operations. we have a full compliment ofmpli equipment out on the street to include am additional resources that were brought in through am different means whether it be contract or mutual aid. folks have seen coming here to o make some headway, but we have v some challenges ahead of us. especially this evening, as wee go into the hours of the evening tonight and through the night, by 9:00 p.m. we have 36-degree temperatures earlier today in t the city but by 9:00 p.m. tonight we're going to be back down to 19-degrees. 1 at 19-degrees the salt that we w put down on the streets april am of the salt we put on the sidewalks becomes ineffective which means we're going to have freezing conditions.eezi this is going to be dangerous for the residents that are out t on the street later this evening. so we encourage folks to go slow, be caution if at all possible stay off the streets. s stay inside. i it's going to be slippery all
5:18 pm
the way through mid morning tomorrow. we're going to be very cold tonight all the way down to about 0 or 12-degrees in the city tonight. ton it's going to be cold, slipperyi and it's in the a good place foe folks to be. we will continue with our cleanup throughout the night. ng we will continue to plow ourur streets and pick up the snow soo that we can move on and get a clean city and we're going too strife for that every day untilt we're there. we do have one thing to annoyance tonight and as many times at these conferences we have had our first fatality frot this storm. it's most unfortunate i'll ask k our chief medical examiner to come up and talk about that. dr. roger mitchell, jr., i'm the chief medical examiner of washington, d.c. unfortunately an 82 year old man had a cardiac arrest whilerres shoveling out in front of his home. so again the message is surrounding shoveling to take
5:19 pm
breaks, to make sure that you hydrate, to make sure that you're checking on your neighbors. those that you know that are neighbors that are elderly, volunteer to shovel their walkway, shovel their driveway much as the mayor has expressed, we are a full community and d.cc will help its neighbors so continue to do that. thank you. okay. i'm just going to echo whathat dr. mitchell said.. mi we are one city. we are d.c. let's make sure that we're looking at our neighbors and tht folks that are out there and if you can lend a hand, please do so. i saw much of that as i travelet the city today. neighbors helping neighbors, folks helping other folks out. there's a lot of snow out there, folks. it's going to take us sometime s to do this. again, pay attention to those warnings that dr. mitchell gavel and make sure you're taking the time to clean the snow. with that we'll take any
5:20 pm
questions. okay. well, just like i told you the t other day, the federaleder government and the d.c. government, we make up the mostt traffic on d.c. streets and witw us telling our workers not to come in on those days we think that we have a manageable situation in getting to clearinr those streets so that we have parking lanes available and that we have all lanes available inn the coming days. > sure. what's your question in.
5:21 pm
>> yes, and i neglected to mention, and i'm going to ask ask dynasties also to be on deck to come up, dan can talk a little bit more, are they goingi to be able to have limited service tomorrow.se and obviously werv want them tot have full service as soon as possible. the public transportation systes is vital to being able to get back to business. b but in addition to have raill service which dan can talk about they are going to offer limitedl bus service, too. dan. thank you mayor. deborah, so the rail system will open at 7 tomorrow as the mare mentioned.ment it's underground service on three lines. it's not every underground station so riders will want to check to make sure that their underground station is one ofiso the ones that will be served. on metro bus it's going to be five hours of service starting
5:22 pm
tomorrow starting at noon and running until 5:00 p.m. on only 22 routes in the region. this is called lifeline services so it's even a step more severe than our severe snow plan. pla it's very limited. buses will run once every half hour with service at the endpoint at the top of the the bottom of the hour. hou it will be predictable for folks. it's again the major corridors, 15th street, 16 together, pennsylvania avenue. routes like that. lik you want on check before headine out. if you are heading out to a buss stop please be safe. saf there's a lot of snow clearing c that has yet to be done around a bus stops and sidewalks. we dope want to see anybodybody waiting in the street. str wait until the bus comes to a complete p to.comp if you took us up on our offer to shelter your vehicle in a metro parking garage which was ennuied on that came from the districts we will extend for another 4 hours your ability toi do that. you can leave your car overnighe
5:23 pm
until tuesday morning without encountering any ticketing, any toeing or any fees.ee don't worry if you've left your car at a metro garage. you've got until tuesday morning now to get it out. sure.sure so we're working around the clock. we have been through the storm.s this has been a massive effort. as you know we stored about 356 railcars underground that will l help us tomorrow morning whenn service resumes, but there's ane awful lot of work that lies ahead. there's parts of 130-miles of above ground track and if you yu were to look at it now it doesn't even look like the lik railroad exists. we share the mayor's desire to t get service up and running.ng. we understand the role we play. it's economy. it's mobility. we will get it up as soon ass possible and what you will see is individual line segments on n the system and individual bus routes come back online as soons as they're able to.o. so from here on out this is going to be a rollingolli
5:24 pm
communication effort and you will see those services come back online as we're able to do so. the best way to stay informed on that, obviously check our website. but if you sign up metro alertsa our free text message and e-mail service we will let you know when your stationery opens, when your bus starts running again.. good question, what are we doind as we haul the snow and depositd the snow, how are we doing thatd and what are we doing with that we've done this before.ne t we are doing it again. we're taking the appropriate precautions and we're making sure that in the areas that we're looking at putting the the
5:25 pm
snow and melting it that we're doing that in a responsible manner. i think our director of the environment, tommy wells can best answer the question on that. >> yes, tommy wells director of the department of energy and environment 6789 as we all know parking lots by rfk are right by the anacostia river.osti my team is working with the t department of public transportation department ofon public works where we put a silt fabric all around the site so our main concern when we all all that snow is the stuff that iss plowed up from the roads. what the department uses for salt is sodium chloride and it is not as much of a concern as everything else that comes withh what's plowed up.wed so we've checked the site. they have the appropriateiate screening there and so when it i meets it will go through the mesh.sh. but also it's in a catch basin area where it doesn't necessarily go straight to the river. and we're looking to be sure
5:26 pm
that the sites hopefully are inn the areas where they will draind and go to the plant to be reted before it goes out.goes it's not great to have a lot ofo in the water, but it's moreore important to keep all the other stuff out and that's what we're doing. before we take any more questions i did just want to say and echo the mayor's comments. we have general schwartz here from the national guard and i'll say the partnership between the city and the national guard, uard their support to us over ther last few days has been instrumental.in they provide the capability for us to get inap areas where we mw not have been able to get to before and that's been huge for us in maintaining our response r times for all of our emergency services, also helping us move equipment, supplies and thingsad like that across the city, whicw we would not have been able to o do without him. i just wanted to say a thank you to general schwartz and thehe national guards men and women that are out there assisting us in this mission.issi
5:27 pm
> any more questions? >> thank you.. mayor bowser and other city officials giving us an update. u she did say d.c. government wil be closed. also d.c. public schools will be closed tomorrow. i want to share information for some of you who may be watching on right now, d.c. public schools there are ten of them who will provide breakfast and lunch today between some and 2:00 p.m. you can go to snow. d.c. gulf for more informationtn who will be providing the breakfast and lunch. >> that's important when you'rer having such horrible access to support services. > metro, limited service. underground only starting att 7:00 a.m. on metro rail, including the orange, red and green lines and it's going to be most underground stations. sta
5:28 pm
check ahead with metro to be sure that is available. it is going to be bus only 22 routes. the good news it's going to be free. > the other information thatmai came out of that press conference there will be no trash pickup for monday or tuesday. they will assess for later on in the week. the alleyways are snow covered and it will take sometime so the trucks can get through. we are getting indications that the first snow-related death in d.c. we had one in maryland, an 82 a year old man in the districts suffered a fatal heart attack while trying to kick out of the snow and that drives back to the fact that they're looking for folks who would be willing to go door to door and see if folks need help digging out. > we're going to fox5's emily miller. she is live -- we're not going to go there. t we will check in with her when e we get back. in the meantime we're going to break. we'll have the very latest fromt
5:31 pm
5:32 pm
colder temperatures we're going to see some isy conditions.tion it could get down to the point where it's so cold where the salt is ineffective. in speaking of that we know they closed down parts of the gw parkway from scott run all the e way up to the beltway. b so stay out of that area, if yo can. they're going to get that roadway clear. in the meantime let's head to montgomery county where fox5's emily miller is standing. s we know you just finished listen into a press conference from county executive ike leg it whai did he have toke say. >>reporter: for hose of you who are living in montgomery countyo and you're enjoying your snow day, i have good news. new the schools are closed monday and tuesday.and so we're going to look at wednesday and the countyd th government is closed. clo and he said he wants all of youy to stay home from work. w have a snow day. so we were wondering what abouta the employees? are we all going to get in trouble for this in let's hear what he had to say about that. >>reporter: we have difficulties getting people froo the residential communities toni the levels of transportation that they need in order to go to
5:33 pm
work. given that we urge people, if if you can and if you're not essential to your employee not to go to work tomorrow. and the employers will hope thaa you will understand the need and the necessity for us to try to keep traffic to a minimum. we do not want to have this to go much longer than is necessary. you can that use that to yourr boss. what he's talking about the residential streets, the montgomery county government soe far has plowed almost 1,000 miles of roads.of r those are the main roads. r and the emergency routes. now they're going to move tomorrow they're going to move m into the neighborhoods, into the smaller roads. that's 4,000 roads, 2,000 miless of those roads, i'm sorry. sor so it's going to take a long type. what leg it said what he's going to do is one pass on each road, one. he warnings everyone you're noting whying to see theer bottm of the road tomorrow, so don't panic. they're going to keep coming back. but in order to get 4,000 miles paved tomorrow it is one pass ps
5:34 pm
through everybody. so that's what's happened. hopefully if your employee knows you're not essential you get a a snow day. i asked him what about us and he said fox5 you guys are essential > we are indeed essential. emily brought up a great point there. there are am people who are still stuck in their neighborhoods who simply can'toi get out. what do you do if you're supposed to go to work and you can't get out of your neighborhood? hopefully employers out there would allowa some discretion here about giving folks days off and not charging them vacation days because it's not their fault. >> it always like during these incidents that somebody couldn'l get to work for one reason orr another, bosses wouldn't keep accept that that's neither heren nor there at this point. we've been talking about the cameras and one of the greatreat things about modern technology, in virginia, the department of transportation has the command
5:35 pm
center where they could can see every camera on every roadway r and inside the v. v 's command center through mostos of the day has been jenny davisv who is inside, not outside. o i got lucky. we heard from govern mack cullive early on today. t this is a big process in virginia. >>reporter: this is. it sounds a little bit like a glue say, they are urging patients. they say this is not a situatios that we're going to resolve in a day. they operated their emergency center at noon on friday. at this point they are they going to keep it up and running until wednesday. even though the snow has stopped they have lots of otherer concerns. if you take a look here, as you've mentioned, lots of cameras. i dop know how well you can see the trafficl cameras on the far wall but they're showing the major thorough fairs. most of them look pretty good. you can see pavement on a lot of them. the problem they say are the secondary roads and sidewalks sd
5:36 pm
are a huge issue. they have to think about that in fairfax county where they 43,00t students who walk to school. they can't have them walking in the street. right now you can't access thehe sidewalk so they're going to have to do something about that. plus they say fairfax county c schools are just beginning to get to their properties. they have buses that they have v to dig out, not to mention the parking lots they have to clear. we've got some big challenges. they also say even though the te snow has stopped, they not onlyl have to worry about removing the snow, at this point they can't push it. they have to move it somewhere else. they are also worried it about flooding, refreezing with some rain that is expected on tuesday. lots of issues to be concerned about here in fairfax county ana the state of virginia. here's what the govern said shortly after he toured the center here this afternoon. aft >> our big concern with ourur schools is sidewalks. we over am school parking lots. they're not plowed. in fact, we landed here, i guess it's a depot for the school
5:37 pm
buses. they're all under two, three t foot of snow. the school buses are not 200 yards from where we'rere today. it's going to take time to dealo with that issue to get to the buses and the sidewalks. we have a lot of walkers who who walk to school.lk t they can't do that now obviously. we're getting the roads open. o this was a major storm and we're doing obviously we possibly can, but we're hitting it hard. now most counts and states just don't have the resources too clear all the sidewalks. if you live in fairfax county or the state of virginia, you are legally obligated to clear them, but let's just say they would really appreciate it if you did. also, the fire departments out t here in fairfax county askingskn folks when you're doing your shoveling please also clearease around the fire hydrants.rant three feet is very helpful so that they can get in very quickly and get their hoses ho attached and do the job they need to do.o d they had a fire in springfieldld earlier today. they couldn't access -- the closest hydrant.clos they were able to get another one because the neighbored thatt
5:38 pm
been able to shovel it out. out that was an enormous help and saved a lot of time. lastly, the govern says he expects this is possibly the most expensive snow event the state has ever seen. right now they're spending 2 to $3 million an hour on snow sno removal. before it's all said and done, the total is going to surpass a $100,000. you asked me where are theyy going to put the snow which is a really good question.d q i went into the emergency e operation center i talk to the director, he said they're still hashing out the plan, but in the past they have been able to finn large areas and parks. he said department of publicnt o works is crafting that and finding the exact locations we speak. they use front loaders. they have a bunch of those types of things and they also rely onn contractors to help them as well. > it will be interesting to find out where all that snow goes. >> we need to find out where the pile is because the kids are going to want to sled down it.

no matter what you salt it really doesn't matter. m one of the great things aboutbot technology now, you can go online and see where now plowshe have gone in your neighborhood. in my general vicinity it will tell you where they salted, s where they plowed, so it's goodo to know before i head back to my place. all the municipalities have them. probably go to the website for r the municipality where you live and you might be able to see that. we're going to go to break and we'll be back in just a few minutes. in the meantime keep it right r here on fox5, our coverage of of the digout. a little michael jackson here. >> we've had enough. so you can stop now. a little shout jut to mark there for giving me my michael jackson. thank you,. >> mr. schwartz:. we'll be right back. neighborhood,i feel like

5:51 pm
we just watched a whole bunch of people, a car stuck got on 19th street, they were stuck s for a while, but a bunch of neighbors, people came and a pushed thend car out. a little bit later tonight aftea we go out of the air we are going to dig out one of our neww cars of the we're hoping to getg that out. that's what folks have been doing all day long. just a recap on some of things that mayor bowser said today. she not only said d.c. schools s are closed but now government offices. i know a lot of people on social media have been asking what area the feds are going to do. d we haven't heard about that at this point, typically in our experience what the districts ds government does tip correlatesoe to what the federal government does, but maybe something will s go differently as well. there is always a concern when they d wo cancel school about feeding people. am young kids depend on breakfast and lunch each day. and districts officials over the last couple of years have been trying to hit that home and make sure that if the kids are at
5:52 pm
home they're still some way to t feed them. so i think they're setting up 10 different places for kids to go. by the way, council chairman philadelphia philadelphia mendelson was walking by. he stopped to say hello not a while ago. i asked him what he said about the streets.. he's been applauding the mayor and so am city workers out there for a good job. he says sure there are still some streets that need attention. in fact one of migrate friends just texted me he lives in look toy a park and he said why isn't my street done yet? this is frustrating. they haven't dealt with snow like this in a long time. even 19th street which i've i been standing along the past p couple of days it's not done yet. some would continue this a business street, not really a credential street, but it appears that every other littlel l street around here has been done.ne. maybe they just haven't thought about this one yet. yet
5:53 pm
the mare reiterated and so did d the council chairman that they're trying to get to this as soon as possible.sibl they know that people start to t get really angry if the streets are not clear. i i bet by tomorrow afternoon if things aren't looking good you'll hear am more complaints from constituents out there. t as the mayor said they're doing it as quickly as possible.e. i've noticed a bunch of trucks coming through here, resalting, shoveling a about it more m because the wind was blowing a little bit back into the street. you know as people climb over o the banks, too, it knocks stuffu into the circle onto major maj streets so you have to come by and shovel it once again or at t least snowplow it out of the street again. that's the very latest. i guess it's going to get cold here again tonight. that means refreeze and people who are walking on the street you should be really careful car about that because i have a feeling a lot of people are going to be slipping tonight.g back to you guys. >> all right, thank you veryht, much. we appreciate that, matt. i think we're just getting wordg
5:54 pm
right now, you said --aid >> there it is. the federal government, federal office s are closed tomorrow. emergency and tell he work employees must follow their agencies policies.s. that really sets into motions a lot of people made, we mentioned about the northbound washington parkway being closed.rk now it's going twao be closed until noon. n this starts, forgive the expression, snowball.sion it's really the best way to summit up. most local municipalities, theat government is closed tomorrow.w. you should check with your you individual municipality to find out, but again opm annoyancing the federal government will be closed in tomorrow. > let's check in with alexly ae monday life in virginia as the e temperatures drop. dro she's relaxed. she's in there for the night, right? >>reporter: we've been having h fun out here in manassas today, but after that last life shotty decided i should maybe do this t one sitting down to minimize the risk to injury to ♪ and to others around me.hers we have talked to some people

out here throughout the day who got out and about a little bit. the sun came out. o it got pretty nice at some points. you can see out here crackercrac barrel, one of the only establishments restaurants open we've seen throughout the day. take a look at the parking lot.. there are some people here and some county officials said todat it was okay if people felt they had to go out and run essential errands during the daytime hours, but now that the now temperatures are starting to take a big plunge it's probably a good idea to head indoors.. we did catch up and talk to some people earlier today who had a little fun in the no as well. yesterday was her fifth birthdab and they spent it in side all a day so we had to bring them out. >> i really like the snow. > what's your thing to do in the snow.ow. >> sledding. > what do you think of it. >> i love it. > all right.
5:56 pm
so those kids had fun. they liked the snow. s they love it just like me and like i said, people did get out today. but now it's starting to get get really kohl's. let me show you just to reiterate what happens.e you have all of this snow, about 28, 29, 30 inches in the manassas area. it started to melt throughout the day. you see here, you see the slush. it's starting to actually gety hard earlier i gn the day as cas were driving around. it was really, really slushy ana then you head to the pavement. p a lot of the main roads looked like this today, perfectly clear, great to drive one o throughout the day, but as that melts and you get the runoff and then we have this big dip in t temperatures it is going to be o straight ice.st you mentioned it earlier, evene if there is salt on the roads it may not be enough from refreezing. so all of these cars, people whw are out and about and then if they tried to drive, even if you do have all wheel drive or four-wheel drive that may not help you in straight sheets of o ice and that is why it's a bad a
