we have live team coverage. >> welcome back. we missed you and laura good to see you. we're getting some help from mother nature today because we have had a very mild day getting up and over 40 degrees and that is beginning the melt-off and we'll lose an inch or two every day as this continues. last night we got mighty cold and quite a recovery from that 4 degrees overnight low this is where we topped out at 42 degrees. we are through the coldest part of our winter climb atly and our temperature right now is 35 degrees. we're hoping it doesn't get terribly cold tonight. i want to show you our evening
5:01 pm
planner because we think by about 7:00 maybe around 37 or so. you can see at 9:00 and 11:00 we're in the mid 30s and we're also looking at fog forming. for the very latest on what is going on out in northwest dc and whether or not we've seen some good melting out there, let's check in with caitlin and find out what we can look forward to. >> even though we started off so cold this morning, we saw that dripping all day long and we've made some progress with our melting. it wasn't too warm because you don't want to melt too fast because then you're talking about flooding problems. out here at the corner of harrison and wisconsin, i feel like these piles of snow already e looking much lower. a lot of it is perspective. we have the sun out, the plows out over the past 24 hours. but i even think a couple of inches at least have melted from today. it's hard to say.
5:02 pm
it's not really a scientific equation for that. but there has been a lot of progress. that's the good news. the thing that was an issue this morning was all the icing. any moisture out there refroze. for tonight it's a different story. by the way, it doesn't feel nearly as cold outside right now. i don't even need any gloves. but patchy ice is still in the forecast. let's show those overnight lows because itsz only a low of 32 here in washington. the models don't usually pick up on snow pack tool. so if you are in the suburbs, be careful for icing again. when i come back out here in about 10 minutes we will talk about the fog which will be an issue tomorrow morning so there's always something. but for right now let's take it back inside to laura and sara. >> all right, thanks caitlin. now to montgomery county where a lot of residents are waiting to get dug out of their homes right now and frustration is building as people wonder why
5:03 pm
some neighborhoods have been taken care of while snow remains untouched where they live. ronica clearry has that story. >> reporter: i am in silver spring, i'm in the fairland green community. here's the problem. some of these people are not injures waiting for the county to plow them out, they're also waiting for private contractors to plow them out. frustrations were high here today when i spoke with residents specifically on this street and what the problem is is that this first part of the street that i'm on right now, this fleeds to be plowed out by the county. once that's done, the cul de sac way behind me needs to be plowed out by a private contractor. now i spoke with one of the residents here and he said that it's been very difficult to just get some answers. it's very frustrating to figure out who is responsible for when and when it will be done. >> 2 and a half feet of snow with a bunch of cars that are
5:04 pm
blocked in with no snow plows. when you're looking at this and you have your job calling you saying you need to be here. if somebody here had a heart attack, how is an ambulance going to get here? >> reporter: i spoke with county officials here today and they directed the residents here to basically their website and what they're calling a snow map and what that does is it tells you what is actually monitored by the county, what will be plowed by the county and what won't be. but that kind of an answer can be a little frustrating because frankly the people here can look out their window and see their street that's not been plowed but it did give some answers here to know the county is aware that this front part of the street does need to be plowed by the county. but unfortunately until that's done, they can't get the back part, that cul de sac plowed which would then be done by this private contractor. the count officials are working as quickly as possible and they
5:05 pm
do encourage residents to use that snow map tool on the county website to at least get information and answers about if their street is going to be done and if it is in fact a street that would be plowed by the county. back to you guys. >> all right, ronica, thanks. that's it. the frustration not noelg what's coming your way. >> the weight of this snowstorm was too much for a church in montgomery county. the roof collapsed this morning. sky fox over the scene to give us a bird's eye view of what happened here. emergency crews tell us that no one was hurt. >> i think this is just indicative of some of the situations we have county wide. this particular area we had about 30 inches of snow recorded. this was a building with a pretty wide roof area. a couple of feet on of snow on it and for whatever reason it may have resulted or contributed to the collapse of the structure.
5:06 pm
>> now an important signal you may have structural damage at your home, listen for creeking sounds or look for cracks in the walls and if you have either of those, have them checked out. >> staying in montgomery now, all this snow making life miserable for hundreds of you living in gaithersburg. but in a condominium complex specifically. they've been without power, heat and water for a few days after snow damaged a utility building. as paul wagner tells us, it doesn't look like the problem will be fixed any time soon either. >> reporter: early saturday morning the roof of this utility building caved in, which forced this wall over here to bow out. and early this morning, workmen came and used beams to shore it up. but now take a look at this. this wall on the other side of the building is also compromised and that workman will have some shore up this side as well before they can safely get inside the building. last saturday morning just after 89:00, residents of this condominium progress who thought

they were about to enjoy a weekend being snowed in, got the surprising and unhappy news that all of their utilities were being shut off. the kond dough association said they could head to hotels, stick it out or get into a bus and go to a shelter. tony rodriguez decided to head to his boss's house. >> fortunately my boss lives close by and i'm prepared as long as he'll have me. they put up with me at work already. i don't know. i just take one day at a time. >> reporter: but just around the corner we found a very different story. willie battle had been tufg it out in her apartment with a handicapped child and had finally decided to give up. >> i'm upset because right now i have a 17-year-old daughter that's physically, mentally challenged, no walk, no talk.
5:08 pm
i called them and said can you just turn the electricity. >> she's been heating her place by boiling water on the stove. >> what are you doing now? >> i'm packing her up and putting her in the car and taking her to my friend's house in virginia. >> some residents are taking it better than others. right now it's an inconvenience but the longer it goes on. >> we might not have heat, i'm thinking maybe friday -- i'm hoping wednesday, but i don't know. the way i'm looking at stuff right now, because you don't know what promises in there. i'm trying to be patient as much as i can, but it's really hard. >> reporter: the condo association is telling residents it could be midweek before power is restored. but a man working on the building today said it could be longer. the total number of people affected is approximately 400 or more. all of them hoping this work will be finished soon. so this utility building has fob safe to enter before anybody can get in there turn on the yu

tills in these 250 units here. it can be several days before they get their heat and water back on. in gaithersburg, paul wagner, fox 5 local news. >> after closing for the weekend, metro was back in service this morning. but only partially. and a short time ago metro general manager gave an update as the transit system works to restore full service. chief investigative reporter emily miller is live tonight with the very latest. so what's the word? >> reporter: well, good news for metro riders. we just heard that metro tomorrow morning is going to be opening all their lines except for the silver line at 5:00 a.m. back to normal. they also have announced that the parking lots are going to have to start paying for them. so you've got until 9:30 tomorrow morning to move your car or start paying fees. they also said the fares are going back to normal tomorrow. today we road the metro and people are mostly happy about being on the metro today even with the limited service because
5:10 pm
they literally got a free ride. we saw and it's a rare sight that we saw today that the turnstiles were just open. you didn't have to stick a ticket in or scan your card, you just went in. and after being closed for the weekend, metro started this morning at 7:00 a.m. with a limited service. it was underground only. and metro bus's what they call life line service. the trains ran about every 20 minutes. at 11:00 a.m. today they finished clearing the snow on the above-ground tracks on the red and arrange lines and they reopened those. they cleared more of the aboveground tracks and you can see them using trains to clear the snow off the red line from rockville to twin brook and on the silver line which they're still working on. then at 3:00 we got another update that they got to the aboveground tracks to open the lines on the yellow and blue to
5:11 pm
reagan airport. everyone we talked to on the metro today was happy to be as we will say back on track, and the free rides made people even happier who might have otherwise been maybe grumpy about the limited service today. >> i'm ready to get back to work. sitting around for a couple of days kind of sucks. >> i'm just using it to get to work. >> it's great. i appreciate it. >> what did you think when you saw the turnstiles open? >> i thought there was something wrong. i didn't know they were free. >> so you didn't pay for the trip. >> that's always good. >> i thought it made since for the customers to get a little bit of an appreciation back. >> i figured they were being nice to us because they closed down for the weekend. so what a nice gesture to let us go for free. >> well, this is what's going on for those of you who take the bus. the bus is stopped at 5:00, a few minutes ago.
5:12 pm
tomorrow they're upgrading the service and they will be a little more frequent than you saw today. you should check the websites for that. also for the bust fares go back to normal. so the blizzard is over and for all of us there is no more free ride. from northeast washington, emily miller, fox 5 local news. >> yet a lot of people are still stuck. >> yeah. but that is nice that metro is doing that. >> that was nice while it lasted. >> hundreds of flights -- this is not nice -- have been cancelled as the east coast tries to rebound from this blizzard. straight ahead we're going to check in at reagan national to see if passengers are making any progress. >> plus some dangerous moments in the blizzard conditions. we have the latest on some of those close calls. >> and there were some really winners through this storm who get a high 5 from fox 5. maybe it was you. be safe while you're digging out. >> it looks pretty from above but not when you're down there digging.
5:15 pm
5:16 pm
first we want to check in with caitlin roth who can tell us a little about what's going on in the weather today. hey caitlin. >> hey there, laura and sarah. welcome back. we sure missed you this weekend we of course had so many snow all over the area but we've already made so much progress in just one day as the sun came out. looking behind me here seeing at least some sufficient lowering of the snow piles i guess you could call it in northwest dc. obviously some of you have yet to see a snow plow. some of you are digging your way out. it's really going to take a while with this. so right now the good news at least when it comes to the weather is that things are very calm. and the weather that we saw today should be repeated for most of the week. temperatures outside right now, we hit 42 as a high, but even though we slipped, we're still above freezing in washington, 35. 37 in annapolis, 32 in
5:17 pm
gaithersburg. unfortunately if you haven't started shoveling yet, the longer we go and the more it crunches up and ices over, the worse it's going to be. the forecast for tonight icing not as much of an issue but we are expecting some fog. you can see by 11:00, visibility down 2 or 3 miles. by tomorrow morning some of you are heading back to work. we know a lot of schools are closed. you're looking at just some patchy fog out there. this is more normal when you get more southerly winds over the snow pack you get moisture in the air and you get some fog. that's all we're expecting for tomorrow. 34 degrees by 7:00 p.m., low 30s with some fog at 9:00 and lech:00 and tomorrow we should continue that melting trend with temperatures in the 30s and 40s. we are aware of a few showers that will come tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening which looks like rain showers which is going to help with the melting. we don't want to melt anything too fast. in fact we're on track this week
5:18 pm
for some pretty decent melting each day. we'll be keeping you updated through the next hour of this show. we'll have the 7-day coming up. >> thavrnltion very much. well we all know that a lot of things can go really wrong in a big storm, but this time a lot of you have been talking about how much went right with this storm. tom fitzgerald is out at the rfk stadium parking lot where they've been dumping a lot of the snow in the past few days. we've decided that you would be the one to walk us through a bit of the bright spots of this storm. >> reporter: look at this. this is all of the snow that they've been piling up here in just the past 48 hours. now we want to be clear with what we're about to do here. we're all very opinionated in the dmv. none of us pass by an opportunity to call somebody out if something goes wrong. but think about it. remember thursday, just 1 inch power paralyze ds this area.
5:19 pm
think about what we've been through in the last two days and how many things could have gone wrong. a lot of them didn't so we wanted to take a moment to give some high 5s. 5 things we think that deserve a shout out. we'll start with the electric companies. that's right, pepco, bge, dominion power. you can't ignore we had very few power outages in this blizzard. >> high 5. >> reporter: remember the derecho storm back in june 2012? the back lash was so bad that they spent so much time trimming trees. the lights and more importantly the heat stayed on. schools. now all of the major school districts in dc, maryland, virginia, they shut down on friday and early on said they would stay shut monday and
5:20 pm
tuesday. >> high 5! >> reporter: let's face it, up until now most districts have used zero of their built-in snow days. instead of taking a wait-and-see approach and making a 4:30 a.m. call, the schools proactively kept parents from guessing and kept school buses off the road. metro. who have we raked over the coals, rightfully so most times, than metro. but let's face it. whether it was the new gm or the desire to avoid an avalanche of more criticism, metro made the right call this time. high 5! shutting down the system for two days was gutsy and unpopular with some folks, but staying closed it ensured its trains and buses wouldn't get stuck with passengers on board, it also discouraged folks from leading their homes and venturing out into a dangerous blizzard. politicians? yeah let's face it the leaders of virginia, maryland and dc
5:21 pm
were on point in this blizzard. governor terry mcauliffe, he called out the national guard before the first flake hit the ground. >> we're still under a state of emergency. >> reporter: you want gutsy? >> our first and main priority is keeping marylanders safe. >> reporter: governor larry hogan -- >> and speaking of the city leaders, we want to go straight to muriel bowser who's holding an update of the progress. >> as you know in our second day of really digging out from the storm and the director will give you a brief update about where we are with the dig-out and the condition of our roadways. you have probably already heard from metro. we reported earlier today that almost every station was open in the district of columbia and now at this time every station in the district of columbia is open on metro rail and we also
5:22 pm
understand that metro has upgraded its bus service from life line to severe snow. to their severe snow schedule. and those schedules are available on their website. we are also announce pg that dc public schools will open on wednesday. we will reopen dc public schools on wednesday. we will continue to offer breakfast and lunch at the ten dc public schools identified earlier today. and today we served more than 500 meals at those schools serving breakfast and lunch. you can also find out about those sites for breakfast and lunch at our schools by calling 311. i will open district government tomorrow on time. and so we will get back to the business of all of our agencies serving dc residents. our visitors and people who do
5:23 pm
business in the district of columbia. dc government will open on time tomorrow. i should also take a minute to thank all of the government employees. some you see, some you don't, who have been working 12-hour shifts, so that we could respond to this storm. we want to also remind people to use public transportation. it's back up. metro can talk a little about the schedules. but we do need you to continue to stay off the roads so we can get curb-to-curb access on all of our major streets. that's very important. and also, there is, while all of our main thoroughfares are passable, there is limited parking. so we encourage you to take the metro to get to work. also want to remind you about trash. we are suspending track pickup
5:24 pm
today, tomorrow and wednesday. and we hope to resume regular trash pickup on thursday. if your trash day is monday or wednesday, we ask that you hold your trash and put it out next week when your regular service will resume. if we need to make any operational changes to trash, given weather, we will continue to announce that to the public. i also just want to say how grateful we have been from the support of our partners, director geld heart mentioned to you earlier this morning that we're finalizing the paperwork that will allow us to apply for disaster assistance from fema and i was very pleased to get a call from the white house this afternoon to offer any support from the president to make sure that that process went smoothly and we are very grateful for
5:25 pm
that call and offer of assistance. so with that, i'll turn to chris for a brief operational update. >> thank you, madam mayor. i'm the director of dc's homeland security and management agency. for the last 48 hours of our response in this storm, we have been focusing on ensuring that we open up our primary routes, get to our secondary routes and put a presence out there throughout the city and all 14 snow zones that we have. i'm happy to say that today we reached 100 % passability on all of our major arteries. all of our main roads have 100 % accessibility. with that being done now we're moving on to our next phase in these operations where we are going to take resources and guide them to the areas that have been less treated so far. we're going to look at those areas where there have been passes or there may not have been passes in the last 24 hours on certain streets. we're going to angle our forces
5:26 pm
towards that. and start to really get deeper into the residential areas to start to really hit those hard throughout the city. so first 48 hours focused on getting our main arterials and our secondary streets done. now we're taking those resources and focusing them on the areas that have not been hit as hard as the main lines. so there will be an increased presence that folks will see throughout the 14 zones, in particular areas where we know we may not have hit in quite some time. so that's what we're looking at now as far as our operations. and we can take some questions. >> we've been listening to the dc emergency management agency and the mayor muriel bowser talking about the cleanup in dc as a result of the major storm to come through, talking about what's going to be happening in the next few days, dc schools will be closed tomorrow but will be reopening on wednesday and the mayor says they will still be offering the free hot
5:27 pm
breakfast and lunches tomorrow. if you want to find out where you can get those, you can call 311 for information on that. and she says the district government will be open on time tomorrow. >> okay, yes. and also a lot of you take metro rail want to know this. it's going to be back to normal service tomorrow. so that means fares will be back in place as a normal work schedule. she talked about regular trash pickup that's going to start on thursday and he was mentioning at the very end that 100 % of the major roads are accessible. so they're moving into the neighborhoods slowly. everybody is starting to get into the secondary roads now if not some of the neighborhoods as well around the area. >> slowly starting to come back to normal. so we will continue our coverage with more fox 5 news at 5:00 right after this. 6 6
5:31 pm
. hi there, i'm sue palka. we've made it through one of the biggest storms we've ever even here in dc. did you hear a rumor that there might be another big snow at the end of the week? there were a couple of models that tried to jump on that but i'm happy to tell you today that does not look likely. if we see anything at all it might be a little bit of mixed precipitation wednesday morning. that's some good news from the weather center. i want to reassure you we're not looking at what we had in 2010. i want to show you our future cast there might be a couple of passing showers, it's not going to be any kind of a big deal. here's where we are tonight. we'll have a little bit of fog tomorrow morning and yes some refreezing of what melts today. during the day tomorrow and especially in the afternoon, a couple of spotty showers. i'm going to describe them as hit or miss could come on by. that does weigh down the snow. it's a good idea if you've got the day off, have them do a

little bit more shoveling and open the storm drains so as the snow melts it can get down to the sewer system and not become standing ice every morning. what about wednesday morning? there is a chance that we could see a little bit of mixed snow and rain this storm is going to be passing way out to sea. all our new information takes our next storm way out to sea. no big worries, nothing to consume yourself with, other than to continue to rehab from the snow we got overthe weekend. that's the latest we'll have the 7-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. sarah? >> recapping tonight's top stories we continue to dig out from the massive blizzard that hit our area.

you can see the complete list of closings located on the bottom of the screen. after being completely shut down over the weekend, metro has resumed service. a short time ago, the gm gave an update saying 80 of the 91 stations are now open and operating as well. and amtrak continues to operate on a modified schedule as a result of the storm. passengers who have reservations on trains being affected are being put on other trains or offered alternate travel dates. >> and the snowy conditions are so bad a prince george's county fire truck got stuck in the snow a snow plow was able to get the fire truck free. >> today dc public schools came to the aid of those in need of food. ten schools across the district opened the doors to serve hot

oi. the snow cancelled thousands of flights over the weekend stranding travellers and reagan national and dulles international shut down over the weekend as you know. and today they are trying to get back to normal. fox's alexandra limon is live at reagan national with the latest. >> reporter: if you are a traveller trying to get in or out of the dc region, i'm sorry but we don't have good news for you. i mean take a look at this. this long line of bumper-to-bumper traffic here behind us and it is the same situation inside the airport. just long lines and big crowds and that is because of all the snow that is on the ground, on the tarmacs, on the runways.
5:45 pm
in fact i just spoke to an airport spokesperson who tells me they're trying to work on it but it's just going to take some time. he says here at reagan national airport there are a total of 3 runways but only one of them has been plowed. meanwhile at dulles there are 4 runways, but again only one of those has been plowed. they are trying to work on clearing a second one there. they're just not there yet. thousands of people were stuck in the dc region as our airports completely shut down over the weekend. and even though they did reopen today, it's only partial operations that they're able to get going. that's compounding delays and cancelations on top of all of the ones that we saw over the weekend. again we did talk to an airport spokesperson who explained why it is that it's going to take some time to get things back to normal here. >> we have to find a place to put the snow and we've got to clear autopsy the pieces that go along with the runway. so it's not just the runway. it's the taxi ways, it's the turn offs that come off of it.
5:46 pm
if you think about when you land anywhere the plane travels all the way up to the gate, all of that has to be clear and all of the surrounding areas have to be clear so your bags can come off the plane, so the catering can get on. so it's all the little pieces that go along with it. >> we were going back to brazil saturday afternoon. it was all canceled. everything was closed. >> i was lucky. i was supposed to fly out this morning but i'm flying this afternoon. >> reporter: let me give you a piece of advice. take it from somebody who's been here at the airport all day seeing the situation on the ground. if you do not have a confirmed seat and haven't gotten ahold of your airline, don't come here. you're just going to have a long, frustrating wait. because the other piece of the puzzle is that it's not just about the runways that have or haven't been cleared, it's also that the airlines knew the storm was coming so they moved their airplanes out of the region so there are stilly not enough

planes in the region to accommodate all of the people who have had delays and cancelations. i'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it's going to be days before things get back to normal. live at reagan international airport. >> i thought it was going to be bad getting back from new york by train. >> so you had no problems at all. >> well, they canceled most the trains yesterday but i was able to get on a train today. but can you imagine days and days not be able to go where you need to. >> especially because as we were saying the last flake flew about lech:00 on saturday night. so i'm sure there's so many people who missed their flights and are for days stranded. >> that is really wild. well, caitlin you made it through your second biggest snowstorm at dulles. >> yes, i did. >> tied for fourth in dc. and we're in good shape because a lot of people worry after sometimes you've had a big snow like this, there's a second big snow that might follow and for a

could be a mitt of a mix early wednesday in wednesday, snow showers in the mountains and into wednesday morning as that front continues to move south ward, we'll watch for patchy flakes. if you do see some snow showers early wednesday, no problem, it's not going to amount to much. the forecast for tonight you see the fog developing and sticking with us through tomorrow. 44 degrees, partly sunny skies. 44 that's great. scattered afternoon rain showers and from there we'll probably see that move out very quickly. patchy fog by 8:00 a.m., 33, 40 at noon, 42 at 5:00 p.m. with some of those showers. so aside from the rain showers on tuesday and the morning mix possible on wednesday, we are very quiet in our 7-day forecast. we still have that chance of some flurries, 35 degrees there on thursday. and that is the storm that maybe some of you had heard about. it looks like it stays largely out to sea but it still could produce a few snow flakes.
