. right now at 10:00, the blizzard avenue dth math. the dc area is in the midst of the big dig-out. tonight many side streets remain snowed in. >> 2.5 feet of snow with a bunch of cars that are blocked in with no snow plows. >> that heavy snow is doing plenty of damage. is your roof in trouble?
10:01 pm
and plummeting temperatures tonight, tomorrow another change is in store. >> fox 5 continuing blizzard coverage starts right now. thank you for joining us tonight. i'm tony perkins. >> and i'm sarah simmons in for shawn. across the dc area tonight, the cleanup continues. we just received word that the federal government is closed tomorrow and just about every school district also closed. >> you can find a complete list of closings and delays scrolling at the bottom of your screen or on fox5dc.com but we have live team coverage tonight from dc to virginia and maryland. we begin with sue palka. sue, the refreeze tonight could cause a few problems. >> oh, no doubt. and we had some good melting today as temperatures were able to get up and over 40 degrees. a big recovery from last night where it was 4 degrees at dulles and 16 in dc. so we did get melting going on today. let me show you those high temperatures and i think we can do a little bit more melting tomorrow. so from that point of view, that's good. because we don't want to have a
10:02 pm
rapid melt-off of all of this snow and a repeat of the kind of problems we had back after the blizzard of 1996. let me show you what we are keeping an eye on for tonight. with all of this snow cover in place around the mid atlantic and we expect milder air to start moving over the region, we could have an issue with some fog. now there's not any fog being reported tonight. visibilities are still really good. but i want you to be aware that we could have some patchy fog around tonight and in the morning. from the melting snow and the warmer air from the south that's going to start to move in. and there's a little bit of a change-up for tomorrow afternoon. we do think the frontal boundary you see there on the map may spread a few showers of rain around here tomorrow afternoon. i'm going to describe it as rather hit or miss. any of the moisture that could be left could be a bit of a mix, a very light mix of rain and snow south and east of dc on wednesday morning. those are a couple of items that
10:03 pm
are in the forecast. but we want to make a big deal about the idea of a refreeze and we've got caitlin roth standing by in northwest dc. we did get some melting, i'm sure there's some wet spots and temperatures are going to be dropping. >> we are still concerned about it spit the fact that it won't be nearly as frigid and we saw some great melting today. behind me the snow banks look like their diminishing here on wisconsin avenue. sofsly we know it's not everywhere and many of you have digging out to do that will continue through a relatively milder today tomorrow. looking at temperatures outside right now, it is still cold in some spots and well below freezing and when you have this much snow on the ground it allows temperatures to drop quickly overnight. look at frederick, you had 35 inches of snow on the ground on sunday and it's 18 degrees right now. so testament to all that snow there. 37 in annapolis and 34 in washington. so actually here in dc, still
10:04 pm
above freezing. now we should hit the freezing mark at some point during the early morning hours. patchy fog is around. there are still some icy spots. temperatures will be in the 20s in the suburbs, that's where we're expecting most of the refreeze to occur. anywhere you have a lot of snow, there's a lot of moisture. we have to keep salting the sidewalks. we know many of you are off, it's something to be careful about when you are shoveling and you do continue to dig out. there are these small things. i'm thankful to say it's above freezing and it feels so much more comfortable so at least there's that. tony and sarah, send it back to you. >> and all this snow on the ground is creating some dangerous conditions for pedestrian. tonight in silver spring a man
10:05 pm
was hit by a snow plow while walking on georgia avenue. he was taken to the hospital in serious condition but expected to survive. >> meanwhile the dig-out continues across the dmv. many side streets remain impassable. we've gotten dozens of calls from frustrated people who say they haven't seen a plow yet. tisha lewis is in arlington tonight with how the clean-up is going there. >> reporter: well, tony it may be days before people see the pavement here and in several neighborhoods across northern virginia and as the addage goes, if you want something done, you might have to do it yourself. that is the case here in this neighborhood and they have taken that literally. but you know what? there's still a lot of work that lies ahead. they're not making a lot of progress. you can see around me the roads essentially remain untouched. in fact, take a look behind me and it is the same scene all the way back throughout this neighborhood.
10:06 pm
the roads remain untestified their team hopes to have all residential roads clear by late tomorrow night. that's an aggressive plan ideally the task would be completed by wednesday. >> well we're at day four and we're still unplowed. and most of the neighbors tonight got their own shovels out and started digging their cars out. had to get to the store.
10:07 pm
took an hour but was able to do it. >> what do you want to say to the city? >> i don't know. i mean, we're digging ourselves out and just wondering -- we keep seeing the plows go by back and forth, wondering are we next. >> i've seen five in five days. >> oh, would you. >> five plow trucks in five days? >> yeah. >> you're good at math. >> here's some more math according to the virginia department of transportation, more than 60% of subdivisions are passable and they say they've passed through most of the subdivisions. that's according to the virginia department of transportation. remember here in arlington, arlington county is responsible. you can see much of it remains untouched. i want to share with you guys some information. i did speak with arlington
10:08 pm
county so how do they decide which neighborhoods get plowed first. they say neighborhoods with hills have top priorities and then next neighborhoods that are near schools and then next it's a progression. as for the virginia department of transportation, they say they still have more than 4,000 plows and pieces of equipment out here on the roads working around the clock. they say interstates are clear and now their main focus is these residential neighborhoods. tisha lewis, fox 5 local news. >> to maryland now we're in montgomery county in a bethesda neighborhood. the big headline in this neighborhood and throughout this area where we've been traveling is down here. listen, the roads have been plowed, they're clear. and what are was left has really just melted away. so folks out here are ecstatic. all the snow that's been pushed
10:09 pm
to the sides like this, this is going to take a while to melt. some of it is pretty hard. so now is the time to make your snowman. we want to spend a couple of minutes talking about ways to keep you and the people you love safe. just like the family inside kind enough to let us broadcast outside their house tonight, they're cooking up a storm, lighting fires in a fire place. but the montgomery county fire chief met me out here tonight he says look, i want to give you five tips to keep you safe. take a look. let's start with tip number one. clear outdoor vents from the house. >> absolutely. that vebt right there is the high efficiency furnace. if that gets clogged your furnishase may shut down or worse produce carbon monoxide. any event up next to the house, your drier exhaust, clear those out. >> tip number 2, protect you and
10:10 pm
your family from carbon monoxide poisoning. what's the best way to do this? >> carbon monoxide detectors. if you have natural gas propane or wood burning appliances. you need to have a detector. it's a colorless and odorless killer. >> get smoke detectors and ones that work. >> >> they started to work and started to chirp. always check your detectors and go with the ten-year life detectors. >> as soon as he actually realized the detectors were old, what did you do? >> they came out and replaced the detectors out. >> that's part of the program. >> call 311 and we'll come out and take care of it. >> reporter: now we're going to tip number 4. it's really how you clean your fire place, right? >> absolutely. cold ashes are never cold. ashes always keep heat. put them if a metal can and put that metal can away from the house.
10:11 pm
>> how to deal with a cooking fire. it turns out a fire extinguisher might not be a good idea. >> if you've got a grease fire put a lid on it. that extinguisher is going to spread the hot oil across the kitchen causing more problems. >> reporter: thank you. >> take care. >> reporter: five tips from chief goldstein. we thank you for meeting us out here. one of the biggest issues no matter where we go, snow on top of the roofs. they've got roughly about a foot of snow, not so bad. i know many of you watching this right now have far more some of the snow drifting up there, piling up. and in some cases it's causing the roofs to collapse. case in point this afternoon about noontime. sky fox in sill vir spring. this is a look at shiloh christian fellowship church. this was a montgomery county scene. i asked the fire chief what was the deal out here. he said look, no one was hurt,
10:12 pm
thank goodness. it was one of several so far today. he didn't have a tally on how often this happened but he said they had five similar calls yesterday. so it does happen. let's bring in sarah. i said is there a case where we should get on top of our roof to clear the snow. he said i know you're going to the gym. if you're nimble and you feel real safe and maybe it's a flat part and you feel like you can do it, maybe. but i think the overall advice is, i don't care how fit you are, leave it to the experts. >> i'm fit but i'm not going up there. i'm afraid of heights. >> to the district now where snow emergency is still in effect. >> jim lokay has an update on the city's cleanup efforts. >> reporter: hey tony, we know tonight the situation out here is that the emergency is still in effect. if you take a cab, do i have a

story for you. we'll have more on that coming up here. back to you guys. >> plus what you need to know if you are taking metro as the agency works to restore service. and find out why it has taken so long to clear local airport runways. stay with us, our blizzard aftermath coverage continues after this.

and others traveling to parts of virginia. >> tonight the snow emergency continues and the city has crews working around the clock to clear all of the snow we are digging through. but some people are getting impatient. i would say a lot of people are getting impatient. jim lokay is in woodley park with their story. >> reporter: here's the good news. we're at an intersection very well-taken care of, if you want evidence we saw four or five trucks with loads of snow on their way to rfk. you get a sense it's very tough to get around. we saw people trying to maneuver their way through and this has been a busy area over the last couple of nights. i know somebody who owns a restaurant around the corner. he says he's had a couple of the best nights because everything else was closed. we're learning more about the snow removal planned by mayor bowser but we're right here on connecticut after and this is still an emergency route. the emergency is still in effect and what does that mean to you?
10:18 pm
it means we're not out of the woods yet. as that snow moves out, either by mother nature or by truck, a milestone. >> today we reached 100 % passability on all of our major arteries. >> but across the dmv the cleanup continues and in the district that snow emergency is still in place on major roads. and tonight in southeast they were taking matters into their own hands. >> since our treat didn't get plowed we had to come together with our hand shovels and i started at the end with a few other folks. by the time we got halfway we just figured we would do the whole thing. so now it's done. >> the first 48 hours focused on getting our main arterials and secondary streets done, now we're focusing on the areas that not have been hit as hard. >> much has been said about new york city's response. unlike the big apple, dc didn't ban its residents from traveling
10:19 pm
on the streets. >> the mayor did put in the travel ban as the snow moved through the travel area. i assumed it work out well not doing that here because it seems that you're happy with the response. there was no need for a travel ban in the district. >> we approached our residents and told them we needed them to stay off the road and i think by and large that's exactly what we did. and we also did not use our police resources to find or arrest our residents. >> that was jim lokay reporting from the district. thousands of flights were cancelled in our area and along the east coast this weekend and it's slow-going at both reagan and dulles international airports. both airports are operating with only one functional runway. dulles international is working to clear a second runway. translation, passengers are likely not going anywhere any time soon. we talked to an airport spokesperson today who explained why it takes longer to clear airport runways. >> right now one of the things that our teams are doing is

melting that snow just so we can get rid of it. we got almost 2 feet of snow at reagan, over 2 feet of snow at blus. we have 2 miles of blacktop, over 900 miles at dulles. that he is a lot of snow that our teams are having to go through. >> if you've got a flight tomorrow, make sure you check with your airline before heading to the airport. >> the snow has left hundreds of people at a gaithersburg condominium complex without power, height and water. saturday morning the roof of this utility building collapsed at the potomac oaks condo asoerk. that's left residents with a choice of staying at a hotel, sheller or toughing it out at home. this is affecting about 400 people. no word on when the problem will be fixed. >> we might not have heat. i'm thinking maybe friday -- i'm hoping wednesday, but i don't know. the way i'm looking at stuff right now, because you don't know what problems is in there. so i'm trying to be patient as much as i can. but it's really hard.
10:21 pm
>> residents been told power could be restored by midweek but one of the men working on the building says it could take longer to fix the problem. they just don't know. >> develop tonight dc police need your help finding a man wanted for making threats. police are looking for 36-year-old aid adrian dagle. he was last seen driving a car with louisiana license plates yxx-278. police say he may be in the dc area. if you've seen him or this car, you're asked to give police a call. >> up next, how dc schools came to the aid of those in need today. >> and some area gas stations are running on empty while others are trying to empty your wallet. wait until you see what they are charging per gallon. we're back in 3 minutes.

scenario was and you can see this yourself. the likely one is the next storm coming thursday stays too far out to sea to do anything other than maybe brush parts of the area with some flurries and even that's not likely. only a very slight chance that that would track closer to the coast and give us more of a smaufl snowfall. take your mind at ease and don't wor about that one. the possibility of a little bit of a mix south and east on wednesday morning from the same front coming on through. wait until you see some of the temperatures i have with you on the 7-day forecast i'll share with you in just a minute. >> residents in montgomery county are concerned some gas stations may be taking advantage of their customers. >> they say some locations are raising their prices with a gallon of gas going for as much as $5. let's go back to will thomas in bethesda with more. this is ridiculous. >> reporter: you gave away my

winter is still awake. the sno blowers blowing it back into the street. cleanup continues around the area. unfortunately tonight because we did have some good melting, and this cycle will continue all week, there will be some patchy ice around. heads up for that, watch your sidewalk and your front step tomorrow morning. there also could be some areas of fog developing later tonight. tomorrow we're back back into the 40s. we're going to melt off a couple of inches or so and there could be a few showers around tomorrow afternoon. rain showers, not a lot.

if you're going to do a little bit more digging i would say maybe think about doing it in the morning. and it is possible that this very slow-moving front that's coming through tuesday that will bring us a few afternoon showers could leave a little bit of mix, especially south and east of dc wednesday morning, a combination of rain and snow. we'll show you the future cast for that. but let me show you some positive notes on our temperature trend. first thing to notice is our average high temperature now 44 degrees. so climate logically we are completing the coldest part of our winter. a little cooler wednesday after the front goes by and thursday at 35. but again the coastal storm we were watching for the thursday time frame is farther out to sea so that's good. we don't think that's going to deposit anything additional here and friday's temperature about 40. next week looking mild again as well. so we'll continue the melt-down. i also wanted to mention that we saw an up tick at 10:00 for our
