parents who have to find babysitters or take the day off from work to stay with their kids. adding to the frustration families who need to get out and say they can't get out safely. crews brought out this heavy equipment today to clear out all the snow. at least they are making some progress. >> that is good. >> now to the district here where dc mayor muriel bowser is praising city workers' efforts to get the city back up and running after the blizzard. >> we are just extremely grateful to the men and women that are on our team that worked 12-hour shifts since last friday. i think we ended the 12 hours yesterday some time that they worked night and day. >> the mayor says she is very proud the city government was able to open on tuesday and schools opened on wednesday. the mayor made her remarks about the snow while announcing a dozen new projects that will be

built to provide affordable housing in the city. >> so is the weather going to cooperate to help get rid of some of this snow and melt it all. gwen tolbart downstairs in the weather center for us. thankfully it's melted. if it was still cold we would still be snowed in. >> we saw some flurries today, that came through with quite a roar. >> that wind is going to be an issue right through tonight. so we're going to have to deal with it a little bit more. temperature-wise we're on a roller coaster trend, folks. tonight the weather is not going to cooperate very well because we've got a refreeze to worry about. into the weekend, totally different story, we get back to the snow melt again. let's begin with a look at where we hit today. temperatures exactly where they should be, just a degree or two off, but we're right into the ballpark into the upper 30s and the low 40s. and this hour here's where we stand. it's currently 36 degrees at mannasas, 37 at annapolis. that's the same for dc and for learn ard town. 34 at baltimore, 32 at

martinsburg, a lot cooler at hagers tony. we are talking about an icy situation with a refreeze, on any of that melted snow with the highways and the sidewalks and the bypasses, do be careful because we are talking an icing once again and even worse than it was a couple of days ago. so 25 degrees in dc your overnight low, 23 at mannasas and 26 at fredricksburg. we've got 22 at martinsburg. today we had a passing snow flake or too, not too much to be concerned about. mostly over the mountains. i'm sure some of you did see that moving through our neighborhoods. that is all moving out of the way for tonight however. as we look at just a few clouds in the overnight hours and our planner by the 9:00 hour has us at 33 degrees and by 11:0031 before we really start to dip. so what's happening? cold air pattern stays in place once we get into saturday morning and it all changes.

big southerly flow kicking in. temperatures going to the 50s on saturday to the 60s on sunday. oh, what season is it really? once again another warm-up and the snow melt begins. i'll have more details on your 7-day forecast. back to you. >> two weeks after dc's fire chief admitted that it was a mistake to allow a lieutenant to retire with full benefits while he was being accused of wrong-doing, now that retirement is on hold. lieutenant guy valentine who was facing neglect of tutty charges is still on the job of retirement. now listed as conditional. >> paul wagner is here now with developments on the case. >> reporter: dc's niir chief admitted that the fire department never enacted regulations passed by the city council that would have kept the firefighter under investigation and facing discipline from retiring with full benefits. a mistake the department said at the time that would alieu the lieutenant from taking his pension and retiring.

but late this week the chief announced he was placing valentine's retirement on hold after enacting emergency rules that will take effect february 5th in time from leaving the job for good. firefighters who want to retire from the department have to wait 60 days before it becomes official. and since the fire department never adopted the rules of the law passed by the dc city council, lieutenant valentine was going to be able to retire before going before a disciplinary trial board. when we interviewed the chief two weeks ago, he told us he was going t make it right for the family of the toddler, and on tuesday the department adopted what's called emergency rules that effectively places lieutenant valentine's retirement on hold until he faces a charge of negligent duty. >> i think it's completely

unfair after his neglect of duty he could hide in some loophole to avoid facing responsibilities and i would arch the fire department to try mr. valentine, to punish him properly and proportional to the pain he has caused to the family. >> reporter: lieutenant was in this firehouse when the call went out for a child choking on grapes. the call was just three blocks from the firehouse. valentine heard the call go out but didn't respond because he wasn't dispatched and told investigators he was unaware the toddler's home was just down the street from the firehouse. and that's not all. the lieutenant's engine was not sent on the emergency because a tablet like this one had become disconnected and dispatchers at the 911 center didn't know the engine was in the firehouse. help was instead sent from more

arrested. authorities arrested 11 other activists during a traffic stop including the group's leader. meantime, during that arrest one rancher was killed in an unusual move. the fbi released video of that traffic stop. this is it here. the agency says it proves that he reached into his jacket before it was shot. >> wisconsin is in the spotlight today. protesters have showed their support for steven avery. the series questions the validity of the convictions and the tactics that were used. a lot of people who watched the show think the two men were wrongfully convicked. the protesters say the goal was to get the men a new trial. and folks in our area will get the chance to hear firsthand

from the lawyers. they'll be at a theater for a conversation about the hit series. >> in montgomery county dozens turned out for a blood drive in honor of officer noah leotta. officer leotta's father talked about his son's legacy and preventing this from happening again to someone else. >> you shouldn't have to be in hell where i am right now. this is where my life is now and it needs to stop. and that's basically what i need to do to make sure noah's memory and his legacy continues in a way that prevents it from happening to other people, such as you and any others on the road. nobody should have to be burying their child. >> that's just heartbreaking. the red cross says all 111 appointments were filled within hours of the police department

a vdot worker is being

treated at the hospital. >> fox 5's emily miller is live at the hospital now with more. emily? >> reporter: well, vdot said they sent one of their safety patrol officers to help a stranded motorist on the side of 66 today. it turned out the safety patrol officer and the motorist ended up in the hospital and that safety patrol is here. he's been treated for a serious but non-life-threatening injuries. the accident happened around 12:30 today on the wb lanes of 66. according to vdot a contract safety patrol. which appears to be this black suv were standing outside their trucks when a pickup truck ran off the road and hit both of them. the pickup truck driver and the disabled car driver were also injured and they were taken to fair oaks for treatment of

serious but non-life-threatening injuries. a state police spokesman said the cause of the crash is under investigation and charges are pending. i got off the phone with a spokes women for vdot. they put their lives on the line every day to help stranded drivers. and she said that they are very sorry that this happened today. from fairfax, emily miller, fox 5 local news. >> equal work for equal pay. >> women currently earn $0.92 for every dollar a man makes. >> today he proposed a new rule that will require companies with more than 100 employees that will report pay earnings or gender by race earnings or ethnicity. employees fill out a form to the feds that includes workers sex

look here in the background of this picture. you can see there are broncos painted on both end zones. they tried to hide it in the background there. this is a picture from a reporter and they were able to correct the issue and the panthers now have an end zone of their own. maybe this is foreshadowing. the panthers are about a 6-point favorite at this point. it kind of remind me of the snickers commercial. what is the most rejected invite in america right now? no, it's not my birthday party. it's the pro-bowl. a total of 133 players have been invited to the game this year. 133, just over 80 play in the game. 47 players have already rejected their invites. mike freeman of bleacher report said he talked to agents that are pulling their players from the game on purpose in an effort to kill the pro bowl. one agent said players see the game as a waste of time and a

a beautiful shot outside right now and you know, not bad at all. but things are going to be changing as we move through into the rest of the weekend. so, let's begin with a look at our weather headlines for you. we have another refreeze tonight. as those temperatures really start to drop. so all that nice melting that we got today to get rid of all this white stuff is going to freeze. so really be careful out there if you're heading anywhere in the late overnight hours early in the morning. lots of weekend sunshine that's a thumbs up. the southerly flow returns, the temperatures are going to head up. low 50s by saturday, 60s by sunday. do we know what season we're in even? well, we had a few flurries that passed through today so some of you might have seen a passing flurry or two, nothing has stuck around except over the higher elevations and over the mountains they did see some accumulation there. we saw just a little bit in some areas and we're going t show you some of those numbers. but here is a look at where we stand right now in terms of the

snow depth. so we've actually we're down 15 inches of snowfall so far from the melt. we've got 3 inches right now. and from when the peek was at dulles, we're down 14 inches and we're now at 15 and we've lost 21 inches so far with the snow melt as far as bwi is concerned. so we're now down to 8 inches. and these numbers are based on when the snow was at its peek and the amounts that officially recorded. at least that's happening, it is finally getting out of the way. for tonight what's going on? we've got some gusty winds for today. they're sticking around as well. that means we're going to have some wind chills because those winds are cold pushing in from the northwest. ridge of high pressure, large and in charge and that's going to continue to build in. for tonight we're going to see fairly clear skies. it's going to be cold. we've got radiation. temperatures in the 20s and the teens only, as we said that refreeze kicks in with the ice. right now in the neighborhoods here is a loot at your

temperatures, 31 hagerstown this hour, 32 martins burg, winchester, cumberland. so here is the wind gusts right now. they are currently gusting anywhere from about 26, 24, up to 36 mile per hour wind gusts. so you factor that in with those temperatures i just showed you and the windchill factor is right now into the teens and the 20s. it feels like it's only 27 degrees in dc. only 17 degrees at gaithersburg. so imagine overnight tonight how cold it's really going to feel out there. if you are going out make sure you dress very warm. ridge of high pressure, as far as tomorrow is concerned, we're going to end up seeing chilly conditions. it starts to move out, it opens the door for a nice southerly flow. we warm up to your 50s on saturday, 60s by sunday and we move into the week we're going to see the temperatures fluctuate just a little bit but no shortage of sunshine as far as your weekend is concerned. here is a look at your planner

and we saw just how quickly metro police responded. we saw them running down this escalator and they yelled for the station manager to open up this gate. they ran through to the platform where they stopped a train and pulled several individuals off. this is video we captured seconds later just after police boarded the train and escorted several people off. we're told a man was assaulted at the judiciary square station just one stop away. and police responded quickly. it was rush hour at the time, so after police removed the individuals, they let the red line train continue. meantime today, newly elected chairman of metro's board jack evans tweeted out his concerns about recent violence writing need to get more police officers in the wmata system. a more visible safety presence on trains, buses, increased lighting, reduce crowding. during the incident yesterday, the victim's glasses were knocked off so he wasn't able to

identify any suspects. but today police brought him back in to look at a photo lineup. in northwest, matt ackland fox 5 local news. >> new at 6:00, a dc fire lieutenant has been placed on administrative leave after he was diit -- indicted on a charge of receiving child pornography. >> reporter: lieutenant earl walker was arrested this morning and appeared in federal court this afternoon. according to the judge who presided over the hearing, a warrant was issued for walker's arrest after he was indicted by a grand jury in pennsylvania. the 21-year veteran of the department who was assigned to engine 22 on georgia avenue northwest said nothing other than acknowledging the judge and the charge against him and that was in court today. walker's attorney said in court that the charge against the lieutenant does not carry a mandatory minimum sentence if convicted and asked if he be released on his own recould g
