now. > and good evening, everyone, thanks so much for being with us tonight, i'm matt ackland and i'm lauren demarco, a proposed bike lane is on the table in d.c., but it's become a controversial topic especiallyiall in the shaw neighborhood where nei the lanes could impact churches. today hundreds of people showed up at a d spot to get public input. fox5's alexandra limon is livendra in northwest with why so many s people are upset. >>reporter: that's right. this really has become a heated h and emotional debate. ddot wants to add protectivetect bike lanes heading north and and south connecting the shaw district to downtown d.c. the issue is this right here, these beautiful historic churches in this area. a the people that attend service there say the bike lanes would leave them with little to no parking. what seems like a mundane topic has become a real battle. bike lanes pitting cyclists

against worshipers at historic d.c. churches.s. the problem the bike lanes would take parking away from historic churches. historic black churches in this t area are running out of parking space for our members to come. they are usually are coming in not from the d.c. area usually coming from in from maryland or or virginia and they need spaces to park. nearly 300 people were at saturday afternoon's meeting. cyclists say protected bike lanes keep people safe. you can also look at a public investment where it's much cheaper to move by bike than it i is by car. worshipers already feel parking is hard to come by and this is yet another way worshipers are getting pushed out of the district. our church is 1858 that's five years before slavery ended. we're a are historic church and we've been in this neighborhood ever since we've been in

existence and we're not moving from the neighborhood.borh the d.c. government and ddot are making a pitch that bike lanes will help ease traffic, are more mor echo friendly and safer.fer. we're looking at how to build safety lines so people don'tdon' ride on the sidewalks and make better delineation of where whe drivers are and where bikerss are. there is a fifth option of dog nothing. that option does not sit well with many people. now, the big point of this agreement again is that the bike bik lanes are protected, meaningcted there would be a physical barrier between the bike lanes l and traffic. that means the city wouldn't even make an exception on sundays to allow people to park there.ere. of course buys lists want the accept racial for safety reasons. you can see why there are such emotions analysis a bigio disagreement on the topic.ns reporting live in shawn alexandra limon, fox5 local

looking back, what kind of grades can you give them. it's probably about a d when you you look at the personnel. they didn't t have the training t the licenses that should have hav been in place. they met minimal standards. but so often we're all new looking back at this. minimal, minimal, minimal and that's what left our community unprotected. it was up to land. it was up to the deq. i was up to the governor and the treasurer's office to make sure that the water was safe to drink d and they all failed us. we made multiple calls to land engineering. the company declined to answer ans our questions. we stopped by their local offices several times. it looks abandoned. aba > no lights, no people. nobody has been watering the plants.. we called kurtz. k we stopped by his house.ouse we're told he's in florida. i'm starting to see a pattern.
