10:00 pm
this is fox5 local news at 10. retama at 10, more snow is on on the way. w so how much is going to be on the ground by the time you start your tuesday morning commute? i'll have your forecast. before the snow starts falling fal local crews are treating the roads to make sure you can get out in the morning. we're live with team coverage. c plus an elementary school volunteer who was trusted to care for young children arrested a for allegely producing child pornography. it's devastating and hurtful..
10:01 pm
what we've learned about the suspect and the popular mobile phone apps that police arece a linking to the case. > we'll get to that in just a few moments, but we begin tonight with that winter weather alert. thank you for joining, i'm tonyoini perkins. >> and i'm shawn yancy. yan and the trucks are out in full force. we have live team coverage onn what's going on right now to the changes we'll see in the coming hours. > we begin with sue palka. >> hey, there. it was easier to forecast the blizzard of 2016 than this much smaller storm that is coming.omin there is still a few questions to be answered including howng h cold is it going to get. get what we're seeing around thehe region is a bit of rain. but we do have a small amount ofmo when the, slushy snow tomorrow sno morning and it this ' why we have these winter weather alerts.
10:02 pm
we have winter weather advisories in the purple, that includes d.c., southern montgomery arlington, alexandria fairfax, prince william, loudon and northern portions of fauquier and then we have another area of winter storm warnings the differencehe being in the amount of snow that sno you're going to see. the heavier snow includes anne arrundel, northern montgomery, m howard baltimore and northeast n into the philly area. a we think that's where some of the heavier snow totals will be. we expect this to have an impact on both commutes tomorrow. tom i'm started to be concerned that the bigger impact will be for for the evening chute because we'll have a greater amount of snowno around the region. generally we're thinking this is going to be one to four inches but there will be spots within the winter storm warning. higher totals will be north. lighter amounts south especially across lower southern maryland. you may only get a smaller accumulation on grassy areas.
10:03 pm
this may come in bands during tomorrow afternoon and then we're also concerned by tomorrowomor night as temperatures fall wefall could have a really significantnt refreeze in wednesday's morning's commute could be impacted. we've only made small changes to our area included we upped it to four inches across the metropolitan area. are anywhere from one to four. f that is a pretty wide range, we know. but you can look up to the north n four to six and six inches or o more as we head up to northern portion of maryland. by morning, it may only be an inch in some spots but it become a bit more significant as s we get into the evening commute c just enough to cause some problems. what's going on out there now and why are temperatures so important to our forecast. caitlyn roth isstanding in to fill in the answers. it is tricky a tricky forecast. f it is raining behind me in northwest d.c. we've got when the roads and it's only because of the rain
10:04 pm
drops and our road temperatures outside. they range from 37 to 40 degrees. outside the station here in northwest d.c. d so yes temperatures are a big concern. it all depends how quickly we get down to freezing and how quickly we can coat the roads. roa right now we only see rain. and that's only going to cause when the roads. also north and west of us up towards frederick and back down across the mountains. you can see there's a lot of precipitation that's going to bee moving in over the next 24 nex hours. this is a long duration event. we do have a lot of snow showers off across the tennessee valley. we do expect it to change to to snow overnight, the question is going to be how quickly will it stick. we need some decent snow bands. and once you stick and you have y a coating on the ground it will accumulate. 38 in baltimore where there's a winter storm warning, 37 in
10:05 pm
gaithersburg, even in the mountains, futurecast cann temperatures do show that we will fall overnight tonight.. our expected low temperature is 32. so cutting a very fine line across the area. are 39 in leonardtown overnight and if you are down in st. mary's calvert we're not expecting any accumulation becausemu temperatures will remain well above freezing. f 34 in gaithersburg, so marginall in some spots, but again how fast and hard the snow falls will dick tit how quickly it acimolites. we're waiting for the change over of snow which should happen hap after midnight. that's the latest out here. thank you, kit line. d.c. road crews have been gathering up to make sure the roads stay safe. mayor bowser employed the team at noon. more than 200 plows will be out spreading salt on the streets. they will be ready to plow major
10:06 pm
and residential streets when necessary. crews aren't taking any chances c in mount. they are also preparing for the snow. marina maracco is live at thet t salt zone in silver springs. s what's going on? >>reporter: hey there shawn,s it's starting to rain like you heard caitlyn say. say it is also raining here in montgomery county and marylandand state highway administration also getting ready. r they say by now 10:00 they've the already pretreated all of thehe state roads.e ro those are all the numb roads including, of course the beltway and 270 which we saw saw had a lot of issues during that clipper system just two weeks ago ahead of the blizzard. b now we just saw the last of the trucks leaving here from the the salt dome. that front loader that's just in front of me was loading the last l of the salt taking them outut into the streets about 600 trucks which be deployed in this area. the closest to the district and all of the maryland suburbs thatrbs are just outside of d.c. and outside of maryland. i want you to take a look at the the
10:07 pm
emergency years center.nc that's iny hanover also south of baltimore. there that will be manned all all day round the clock as they watch the roads as they watch the conditions, make sure thathat everything is in place and ready for the several events that we're expecting tomorrow in the morning and then again in the evening. now, sha warnings us that of course their tasks is extremely arduous when they're removing r the snow and sometimes it's much muc more elaborate than we thinke t especially when it comes to bigger roads like the beltway. take a listen. lis it takes our crew about an hourour and 15 minutes to an hour and 30 minutes to get back to where he started or she started on that route. so people say where is the plow? they may have been there an hour ago and got an inch and a half hal of snow and it takes them a little bit of time to get back there. what them will see that's different is the plow trace six plo vehicle also wide diagonal and moving the snow. that's the difference.
10:08 pm
unfortunately far too often we see people get out past the plow trains. we see them turn over all the time. the safest place to be is behind the plow train, not in front of it. > you are looking at the snowplows. they are parked and ready for once of the snow starts. sha reminds us this that they the only take care of a third in maryland. they are the primary roads. they see 70 percent of traffic. of course during the blizzard they say much of the reason they the say they failed in removing the the snow was because of the simple volume of traffic, especially onspec the beltway. they're hoping that tomorrow t they won't see the same. sam but of course we're expecting exp the snow probably in the morning m and then again in the evening during those especially peak hours of traffic. some he we can only hope forth best. but of course keep it with fox5. we'll keep you updated with the the very latest with traffic and weather. marina maracco fox5 local news.

super bowl 50 half time performance. today former new york mayor rudy guy and i blasted her. he's calling it outrageous. he says it was terrible. he says that beyonce's performance was an akin to an attack on the police because off that imagery you see with the ax. some say that was to sympathize malcolm x and the black masked masks. it's very interesting. he said he didn't understandtand what they were doing. doi they were moving all around, on the ground. could it maybe be just a little disconnect with the generational thing? i think it is a generation l al mayor. i think america's mayor may want to stick to america mayor's mare. i think he's a little off base here. some of our best music has come out of the vietnam war, protest

performance. the other things that performance risk i've said this before, i'll say it again. you alienate fans when you get involved in politics and that's tha a risk that entertainers such as beyonce are willing to expect. most people probably expected exp the carolina panthers to take tak home the trophy. apparently the president thought that as well.l. >> they were favored to win. president obama made a secret prediction that the panthers pan were going to win. he revealed his prediction after the fact that he lost the prediction. i think he maybe should stick to politics. lets the sports enthuse is do that. we know he's angling for a jobob on espn. it was very fun to watch and see how everything played out.

i was going to say your advice adv to these folks, stay in your lane. > stay in your lane. unless he was right, then i would be singing a different tune. > it was always great to have you. you can read judy's blog in the know on the hill.com. h > as we mentioned at the top off the hour more snow is expected overnight and during tomorrow'somor evening commute.enin let's send it to sue palka. pal she has the latest on the forecast. hey there stone any, shawn and hello to judy. we're still continuing to work on this very tricky forecast and our latest thinking that we'rere seeing a lot of rain around. aro it will likely change to snow overnight and definitely by sunrise i think a the lot of uss will be seeing snow around the region. we still have some questions about temperatures and how much we're going to be able to accumulate as a result of these temperatures, whether we'rewh going to get some heavy bands setting up.ttin i do think it affects both commutes and has the greater impact for tuesday's commute. that one will require a little
10:50 pm
extra time. in the early part of the day,ay maybe it's warm enough so it's mostly an accumulation on grassy areas. hopefully the rain that we havee tonight isn't going to wash away too much of the pretreatment andent the roads will stay in good g shape as well. this all wraps p up tomorrowomor evening and still some questions on the amounts 6789 we all know by then of this week it looks like it's turning much colder and also on the dry side. this is a challenging forecast. fo for starters it's an area of low pressure that is eventually going to be transferring someg so energy to the coast and that process hasn't taken place yet. it is in the middle of what we hope is that transition and hopefully things will become a little l clearer after this is off the coast. again, the snow has a much better chance of accumulating to significant levels to the norththe of our area and that's why we have the winter storm warning in our region. reg if you miss it at the beginning, beg i want to show you where we are thinking in terms of numbers num
10:51 pm
with this one as well as get you updated on the snow reportsepor because at the moment mostly we've been getting reports of rain. there may be a a little bit of snow not too far from the winchester area. are we did hear from mineraleral virginia that there's at least enough snow to cover the trees a little bit and also out toward pendelton county.ndel we have a couple reports of when of the snow out there.here just getting started still in the rain phase. eventually we're going to see this energy starting to make itsts way over to the coast. coa if we get some of the good bands ban of snow, these are the types off snow totals that we are expecting to the northeast, some of of our northern suburbs could be four to six inch range. for d.c. we have a range of onene to four and at this point i'm thinking it might be on thee other end of that range for d.c. dusting to one inch to the south but again we'll continue to watch it. nothing on the ground now therehere has been a little bit of snow
10:52 pm
