personal car when he caused a chain reaction accident. let's show you some video now. according to the report captain shelton was traveling too close to the vehicle in front of him and when he approached the intersection the vehicles slowed for a disabled car on the right shoulder, that's when shelton, according to the report, slammed into the rear of a u.s. government mercury which then slid into a honda. no one was hurt but the report says the officers suspected shelton was under the incident and was taken into custody. that's just slightly over the legal limit of .08. we reached out to captain shelton and he confirmed he had been in an accident but declined to confirm he had been arrested. dc police did confirm capital tan shelton's arelt and if his name is familiar to you, back in april of

was wound in a shooting where another police officer was killed. it was just over on benning road in april of 1997. the two were off duty. the two got into a dispute with two men. there was a shooting. robert johnson was killed, shelton was wounded in both of his feet. and two men were arrested and are now serving long prison terms. but tonight dc police confirm captain shelton was arrested for dwi and his police powers have been revoked. >> fairfax county police need the public's help tonight tracking down a man who broke into a woman's home while she was sleeping and sexually assaulted her. the attack happened saturday morning in the mount vernon area. the suspect awakened the woman, sexually assaulted her and took off. if you recognize this man,

you. >> tonight a disturbing new study by metro says that day-dreaming may be the cause of a rash of red-light violations by dream operation. >> it's become such a problem that wmata brought in a team of neuroskiinists to come up with a solution. fitz? >> reporter: we all know that distracted driving behind the wheel of a car is a big problem, but think about this. when it happens to a metro train operator with hundreds of lives at stake, well, it's even more concerning. the federal transit agency says 47 instances of operators running red lights have occurred in the last two years. while this may sound like a no-brainer, metro is now bringing in experts on the brain and human behavior to figure out why this is taking place. now, according to reports, metro has brought in neurological scientists to start loo

this issue. a report in "the washington post" claims they have consistently left platforms without full conscious aware this is of their action. those 47 times red light violations over the last two years, that's nearly twice a month. metro has taken steps to address the problem including installing systems which intervene if a train operator does this before they are supposed to. remember, those lights are important. they space out these trains in the system, they help avoid crashes. passengers as word spread about this today, they say that day dreaming leads them to be even more concerned if it's a factor in these violations and they say this is eye-opening news. does it concern you? >> yeah. makes me very frightened. >> first of all, i thought that's pretty

do to take care of her child, take care of herself and this child died. this child does not need to be dead. >> because doctors determined sims is no longer a danger to herself or others, she has been granted conditional release. she will have to meet requirements to prove she is being treated for her illness. >> fox 5 is in montgomery county where the mother suspected in the disappearance of her two young children was in court today. again a psychiatrist deemed kathryn hoggle mentally unfit to be tried. >> i have had many moments with catherine and i've said the same thing each time. this is the most unfair situation for the oldest sibling. that is where my heart breaks. so as a mother, and i'm her mother, this needs to end. we need to solve

you can see fishing and kayakers and it is a lovely evening. it will stay lovely, a dry evening as well. these are the high temperatures. not bad at all. the average is 49 so we were above it at all locations. and get this. daylight savings time starts march 13th so it's going to get better and better. we do have a couple of storms in the pipeline this week and the first one begins towards sunrise tomorrow. we have a storm on wednesday as well. i'll talk about those in just a moment. in the meantime it is 50 degrees now here in the district, 52 in mannasas, 46 at leonardtown and 48 at hagerstown. and it's important that we've had a warm day and we did not get below freezing last night because we do have some rain coming and we don't want to deal with any slick spots. this is the first of two storms and it will mainly africa us tomorrow. perhaps you heard there could be a little bit of snow with this one. as we've gone through the week we realize this storm is not going to have a

to work with, no snow for the district by the way. but there could be a little bit of mixing very early tomorrow morning north and west. i would say the best chance of that is going to be west of i-81 and the blue ridge and maybe you get a little bit of snow out there you about it's going to be too warm for anything to stick. and by the time we get to all late morning, everybody is going to be seeing some rain. just wanted to show you that our snow cast really doesn't see much. it puts a very light dusting up towards the new york city area and maybe in the mountains and that is it. but we will watch temperatures closely as we drop down to 40 degrees here in the district tonight. frederick you'll be around 33 and 34 for hagerstown. so that's the first storm. the second one is wednesday and it's definitely stronger, definitely going to produce warmer temperatures, a lot more rain and maybe even a rumble of thunder. lots to talk about this week and i'll have your 7-day forecast coming up in just a bit. back up to sarah and laura. >> coming up, a health alert tonight for parents of high schoolers. >> fouim

same experience at starbucks as everyone else. >> ronica cleary met with the man who posted this on facebook. we love this story. favorite one of the day. >> reporter: he is deaf and is a regular here. he types it on his phone and shows it to the cashier. he got this note that surprised him. i've been learning asl just so you can have the same experience as everyone else. asl stands for american sign language. we met here over coffee and we used the notes app on our phones to do the interview. he told me that the cashier first surprised him by actually signing for him "what do you want drink" and then gave him the note. he signed for me how he felt when he got the note. and then transcribed it for me so that i could

fox 5 is in prince george's county where two teenagers were robbed after trying to use the offer-up app to purchase goods. >> police conducted a st

operation that led to the arrest of two suspects and their warning that these types of robberies are on the rise. fox 5's alexandra limon is live in landover with more on this. >> reporter: guys, check it out this is the offer-up app. it's an online classified similar to craigslist where people can buy and sell stuff online. police say two men were arrested after they alijdly lured two teens and then they robbed them. the men were on rested during a police sting on tuesday. the investigation started after police got a report that the two teenagers were robbed. the victims arranged to meet on february 6th, and by a dirt bike. but instead when the teens got there, the suspects allegedly robbed them at gun point. that happened in capital heights, maryland. officers decided

sting operation pretending to be customers also buying a dirt bike and meet at the same location. that's when police say they arrested the two suspects who were armed with a handgun and a high capacity magazine. >> try to speak to them in person. do it in a public place such as a shopping center, a police staying, fire department. somewhere where there's people around. which is a way to identify that you have a less chance of being victimized. also the biggest thing is trust your gut. if you feel that something isn't right, if the deal is too good to be true, there's a good chance that it probably is. >> reporter: now again, prince george's county police are warning people that they've seen a spike in the number of people getting robbed after they were lured through online apps, not just offer up, but also things like craigslist. so again they want people to be

alexandra limon, fox 5 local news. >> developing tonight, the fbi is defending its decision to take legal action against apple. in an effort to gain access to the iphone used by one of the shooters. apple has refused to help unlock the phone arguing it puts the security and privacy of all customers at risk. james come says the bureau is not looking to break anyone's encryption or set a master key loose on the land. facebook ceo is defending ople saying he briefs in encryption. he says while facebook will play its part to fight global terrorism, weakening digital security is a bad idea. >> russia is seeking permission to fly its high tech planes over the

problems, folks. there might be a little bit of snow to watch this morning loop and you can see that it's showing you between 6:00 and 10:00 in the morning. mainly out to the west, a little bit of that could mix in. but i think it's going to be too warm for anything to stick so i do not expect any problems. that's the first storm we deal with tomorrow. it will produce about .5 inch of rain. a stronger storm is coming on wednesday and that one will be all rain and maybe even a little bit of thunder. as a matter of fact we're going to have to watch the forecast because it looks like we may get outlooked for the possibility of some strong storms. the marginal risk means in the green here from dc on south that there is a possibility of some stronger storms, some of which could have some damaging winds, a slight risk down to the south and east. and that will be a wind maker for us as well coming in on thursday. let's start with tomorrow's storm though. it will be the weaker of the two storms we see and it will likely produce somewhere between

to .5 inch of rain. it's we don't have any wind to deal with, it's 50 degrees, we are partly to mostly cloudy so you might have gotten a couple of good sunset pictures tonight but the rain will be moving in and we'll watch temperatures closely but i think most places will be above freezing but we've been warm today. 46 for winchester and not a bad night as the clouds begin to thicken ahead of our next system. as you can see it's not a huge storm. the one we see on wednesday will be bigger than that one but the clouds will be building in and a little bit later tonight things will get a little bit chillier as we watch our morning rain start to push on in. west of i-81 with just a little bit of mixing with the rain and no accumulation expected unless there's a very slushy coating on grass in a couple of spots far to the north and west. we will watch

hagerstown 34, martinsburg heading to 33 while the district is heading to about 40 degrees tonight. so definitely chilly. gorgeous sunrise today, maybe we don't see this kind of picture tomorrow morning. i do know the sun will come up at 6:49. the temperature will be around 40 degrees and we want to say thanks so much to chris for sending in that gorgeous sunrise picture. we love to see your pictures. tweet or facebook me with your pictures. a little bit cooler tomorrow, a wetter day, wetter in the morning than it will be in the afternoon. it may only top off at 39 for hagerstown our weak storm system will be pushing that rain in. we go to showers tomorrow afternoon and make way for the big boy, that's the storm on wednesday. but that one is going to stay inland. that means too warm for us to see any snow. and we're going to get warm on wednesday, up to the mid 50s as our storm track goes west of the mountain range by quite a distance and that

maybe some thunderstorms for us and significant snow. we're going to be watching that storm produce maybe 6 inches of snow for places like chicago, detroit, all the way up toward the canadian provinces but not in the cards for us this time. it will take a while to get out of the picture and create strong winds for us late wednesday into thursday. we could see some gusts over 30 miles per hour. that's what we're expecting on thursday, although i think for the most part thursday will be a dry day. last stop tovrnt we're going to wrap it up with your 7-day forecast and as mentioned we're going to see that rain and thunder. friday's temperature about 45 degrees. as we head to the weekend it looks like we can warm things up again. how about this sunday temperature of 54 degrees? that ought to be fantastic. we'll show you where temperatures may top out. it will be nice to get another warm weekend out of the deal and monday's temperature with a few showers possible about 55 degrees. your 7-day forecast is looking good. we start out on the chillry

we deal with two storms and the possibility again of some strong thunderstorms in the wednesday time-frame that lead us into big winds on thursday. but last week at one point it looked like both storms could produce a little bit of snow so you see why it's important to wait this will we get closer. because that's a big change. some people were very disappointed it's not going to be snow. >> who was that? >> mike thomas. >> what about in the mountains? >> the mountains will get a small accumulation of slushy snow. i would describe it as a coating on grass, maybe. and i don't even think they see much on wednesday. the model implied there would be a lot. >> for skiers, i see where you're going. not so great this round. >> that's good news though. a little bit of rain is just fine. >> getting closer. >> after weeks of rehabilitation, 20 geese are flying free once again tonight. the birds were rescued from

>> shawn and tony, you have nothing to worry about unless rain frightens you. and sometimes little bits of water can be frightening. we do have two systems we're going to be watching. a bit of a soggy mid week. the wednesday storm may have a little bit of attitude with it but we are going to have a storm moving in here tomorrow and it will be the weaker of the two storms that we deal with. tonight we just have the clouds around but if you watch very closely down in the southwest corner there right behind the fox 5 you begin to see a couple of showers showing up and that is the leading edge of the rain that will be in here by sunrise tomorrow. so we will watch that system get closer. it might possibly have a little bit of capability of mixing in a little bit of snow far north and west. we think that will be a low impact. it will not be able to accumulate because road temperatures as well as the grass will be too warm. no snow for the district, a little bit of
