and all. today we had some gusty winds but not quite as gusty as they were with the storms, on thursday, we had winds that really were gusty and created some wind chills but finally those winds coming down. but the weekend is going to start on the chilly side and that's because we're going to end up seeing the jet stream, a little bit more to the south so that cooler air settling in. so just be ready for that. the difference will be that once we get into sunday we are actually going to see the temperatures rise. and that's at least some good news. so by the time we get to sunday, things are going to be a lot warmer, at least. and we're going to see warmer air start to move in and we're going to get a nice boost in our temperatures. we're going to be into the 60s instead of the 40s. winter, not over yet. this is just a teaser of spring before we start to cool back down again. and we'll get a good knew days of it, anyway. right now 33 in

difference as we get that warmer flow and we head right to the 60s. here's a look at jur sunrise forecast for you. 45 degrees under some partly cloudy skies and for tonight your overnight low 30. winds improving with a few clouds. 46 degrees, chilly but look at what we're talking about on sunday. we're talking 62 degrees. is it spring? seems like it. and we get that run of 60 degree days until wednesday then we start dealing with a storm system. we'll have an eye on that for you as it starts to cool down the end of the week. >> thank you, gwen. >> coming up next, are you ready for the oscars? join the aka gang for fashion, controversy and celebrity moments. aka the awards is next. stay right here.

hey everybody, it's kevin mccarthy, and we're geeking out about the biggest movie night of the year, my super bowl of movies, yes, the academy awards are coming up. and that is chris from sound tech in d.c. give me a deadpool high five. that was awesome. great snap quality there. alex, holly, and annie. hi, kevin. hi, kev. what's going on? how are you? good to see you guys. what's going on, alex? we're all back together again. we are. and i'm so ready to talk movies. we have a lot coming up on this awards edition of aka. take a look. it's what everyone's been asking, are the oscars out of touch. and on the red carpet who got glammed and who got slammed? say hello. and actors like you've never seen them before. everything was just haphazard. and you'll only see it here. so we have to start with the nominees for best picture this
10:31 pm
year. take a look at this. the eight nominated films for best picture this year include bridge of spies directed by mr. steven spielberg, co-written by the cohen brothers, and starring tom hank. nobody is safe. that film has six oscar nominations. next up is my favorite film of 2015, mad max: fury road, with ten awesome oscar nominations. directed by george miller, who also directed a little film called happy feet. next up is the revenant with 12 oscar nominations, starring leonardo dicaprio. directed by alejandro gonzalez inarritu, who also directed birdman, which won best picture at the oscars last year. spotlight has six oscar nominations and is the best journalism film i have seen since all the president's men. how do you say no to god? next up is the martian with seven oscar nominations. directed by sir ridley scott, starring matt damon, who also picked up a best actor nomination.
10:32 pm
it's a time bomb. next up, it's the big short, directed by adam mckay, who also directed anchor man. this film got five oscar nominations, including one for mr. adam mckay. next up is the movie room, with four oscar nominations, starring brie larson and jacob tremblay, who was phenomenal in the movie. definitely see this film. and finally, brooklyn with three oscar nominations, including saoirse ronan who picked up a best actress nomination as well. [music]. guys, i saw 150 films in 2015, and i think eight of those films are solid. but i think the academy missed the line on a lot of films this year. and that's the thing, whenever the nominations roll out, everyone thinks, okay, i have an issue with this, because everyone has their own opinions. but this year, once we saw all those nominations roll out, a lot of people had something to say about it. i was screaming at the scream. when they were nominating the awards, i could not believe some of the films that were left out. i was, like, blown away. but were you surprised, because this has been a conversation that's been going on for quite some time now. so i think while we are disappointed, i don't think a lt of people were too, too surprised.
10:33 pm
there's outrage for sure, but i think the shock value was lessened. well here's the thing, annie and kevin, this year everything pretty much looked the same. [music]. for performance by an actor in a leading role, the nominees are -- the nominees are -- the nominees are. category after category, people started to realize that all of the nominees are white. at this point in the game, it should not even be a situation. i do think it's unfair, absolutely. you do a good job with a film, then you should be recognized and honored for it. many calling it #oscarssowhite, which had some actors feeling like, why bother to show up to the awards. jada pinkett smith made it clear that she won't be there. i will not be at the academy awards, and i won't be watching. or others in hollywood, like director spike lee, who said he will not support it. so it's one thing to hear all the nominees, but it's another to see them. look at this photo. they all are pretty much white. i don't know, to me this is kind of sad, to see this photo
10:34 pm
of the lack of diversity. and, you know, i think that the nominations surely need to reflect the diversity in our community. and i mean that as far as racial makeup, as far as age goes. and, kevin, i know that you do a lot -- you have all the "insidery" stuff on who these voters are. yeah. who are nominating these movies? it has to start with the voters; right? yeah. this is the second year in the row where all the actors in the acting categories have been white. and that is absolutely ridiculous. and i think the academy has been out of touch for decades. i mean, diversity is a major problem, but i think it's a bigger issue than diversity. well who's doing the voting? yeah, the voting, which is interesting to me, the average age of the voter is 63 years old. i mean moving on, there was an incredible thing i saw the other day about some voters are admitting they're voting for films without even seeing the movies. scott feinberg from hollywood reporter tweeted out that he talked to a voter who voted for the movie room, without even seeing the film. and then a couple years back there were two voters who admitted voting for 12 years a slave without even seeing the movie.
10:35 pm
problem. so how many academy voters actually saw compton, actually saw creed, or star wars, films that deserved to be nominated? the fact that these members are admitting -- that some of these members are admitting that they did not see the film and just voted simply on buzz, or whatever that they voted on, how is that possible? and i can't take them seriously. yeah. especially if kevin saw 150 films in one year, they can do that. yeah. so we're going come with our own. we're going to do our own list. okay. so we're going to come up with our top five best pictures that should have been nominated this year. i'll start off with my three. definitely star wars: the force awakens. that was a massive film. it made the highest amount of money in 2015. everyone saw it, and it brought back the nostalgia factor of star wars. mad max: fury road was nominated, deserved to be nominated, ten nominations, awesome flick. and then a movie called ex machina, smaller independent film, which really, really did well at the box office for its small budget. alicia vikander is amazing in that film. but your two picks are the ones that needed to be nominated for sure. yeah, my pick, it didn't make the list, but in my mind it is on the list. i'm talking about straight outta compton.
10:36 pm
yeah. high five on that. i loved that movie. it was so well done. it was a historical movie. and whether you are familiar with nwa or not, you could appreciate that film. it transcended hip hop. it wasn't just a hip hop film. jason mitchell was phenomenal in that movie. he played eazy-e. he was amazing. it started a conversation, most importantly, in my eyes. my pick was creed, and come on. loved that movie. first of all, michael b. jordan. yes, girl. sweetheart. okay. you love michael b. jordan. ter i walked out, i started llowing him on twitter. i was all about michael b. jordan. okay, but it was a powerful film. and to me, it revived the old rocky franchise. you walked out of there feeling inspired, like you could tackle the world. that's true. and i loved how they had the romance with tessa interwoven perfectly into it. it didn't mess with his, you know, determination. it was like this beautiful love story and this powerful story. but here's the thing, annie, i mean, star wars and creed, they both had to live up to this incredible hype, and they did it successfully. because i was like, creed, it's ke a religion in philly; right? yeah. so to come back and make sure you do that well, that's a pretty big job.
10:37 pm
hey, we want all of you to also be in on the conversation, so log onto your facebook pages right now, and we'll be facebooking live during the commercial breaks. hope you join us. because i want to know what you were thinking. and you know what, kevin, you're such a lucky guy. you got the to talk to some of the nominees, and you got them to do some things that we couldn't picture them doing. yeah. stay tuned for that. very, very excited. i mean, some of my cinematic heroes. but real quick, here before we got on a break here, check t my hilarious moment with josh brolin. [farting sound]. it was really good. thank you. thank you so much. how you doing, buddy? i'm great, man. we're rolling. [farting sound]. yeah, kevin mccarthy. we should just fart the entire interview, seriously. dude, i'll do it. i'll do it. i think it's really important to promote this film, but i think it's important to laugh once in a while. that's right. [farting sound]. come on, man, ask me a question. have discipline. all right, here we go. [music].
10:38 pm
10:39 pm
10:41 pm
[music]. okay, now this is awesome. chris, you rock at life. thank you so much. thanks, chris. they look good. i know. alex, i'm definitely going to be having one of those very, very shortly. all right, so some of the best actors this year i think are going to win on oscar night. i think dicaprio is finally deserving of a win. he's been nominated four times. this is his fifth nomination. never won an oscar. dicaprio really ate a raw bison liver when shooting the revenant. they offered him a fake one, reportedly, and he wanted the real thing. check this out. in this movie you're literally having to eat a bison organ. and i'm wondering, like, when you have to do that in a sequence, does it really help add to the actual moment for you? let's clarify, that organ was liver. yeah, liver. the liver, yeah. okay.
10:42 pm
on the screen. i think that, you know, you put yourself in those circumstances. pain is temporary. film is forever. my thing looked like a big bloody pancake so i had to go fr the real thing, and the reaction is up there. i mean could you imagine, i mean, him reacting to biting into that raw bison liver? you think he had to do multiple takes, too. i hope not. i think he only did it once. or maybe, maybe it tastes like chicken. you never know. right. some actors go into the extreme. brie larson, who is also nominated in the best actress category for her performance in room, she's likely to win the award, and she actually, the character had spent seven years in a room raising a kid, her son, in the movie. i spoke to her about the extremes that she went to by putting herself in a room by herself for a month preparing for this movie. check it out. you mentioned you stayed at home for a month. what does that actually entail? were you indoors for the entire month? did you leave at all? how did that go? well i had to stay indoors anyway, because i couldn't -- ma hasn't seen the sunlight in seven years. right. so i had to get pale anyway.
10:43 pm
room would be. so worked out a little bit, ate my very small meals that were given to me by a nutritionist, read the books tht i had on sort of trauma. so i mean, just going to the extreme like that, i mean these actors really want to get into the mindset, and she had to get pale by staying indoors. by the way, cheers to you. yes, cheers. cheers to her. yeah. i can't imagine doing that. because you think about all the lines they have to memorize, maybe getting in character. but those little things like that, hey, i have to get pale for a role, let me sit in my room for a month. yeah. and it really brought back memories of her own child, she said, just kind of getting back into the memories of that. but let's move on to something a little more happy. okay. stallone, obviously in creed, comeback performance. he was nominated in '77 for the original rocky. lost to peter finch for network. but now he's nominated again this year in the supporting category. i think he's finally going to take home the oscar in the supporting category. let's look at him reminiscing and re-remembering shooting those iconic step sequences in rocky. check this out. i had to run up and down those steps when i was 12 years
10:44 pm
just finish it. there's something about these steps reminiscent, believe it or not, by one of the most influential characters. when i was young, i watched steve reeves. steve reeves pulled down the tower, which is very symbolic and very reminiscent of what the museum looks like, the pillars and the columns. and i thought, wouldn't it be great to kind of do an homage or run up these steps, and that's sort of what influenced you to get you in the films anyway, was this look. and i was going to carry my dog up to show how strong rocky was. but once i lifted that bull mastiff at 130 pounds, i got three -- i got three steps, i started to hear my discs compress. i said, sorry, honey, i love you, but sit, fetch, go. i'll do this one. i visited your beautiful city, by the way. that view from that moment when he's putting his hands up, what an amazing view. and you -- you can see the skyline of philly from there. yeah. everything looks beautiful on the rocky steps, come on. you working in philadelphia, you got to see some of the
10:45 pm
jealous about. and you have a really cool story about that. i keep saying over and over, in philly rocky is a religion, and that's because it's so true. so when everyone found out that creed was going to be filming, everyone was excited. i may or may not have showed up on set a couple times, trying to see michael b. jordan, hey. you are obsessed with him. but here's the thing, it's right in philly on the streets of philly. so one time when they were going to the rocky steps, of course everyone wanted to see that moment. to have sylvester stallone on the steps again, that's like everything. yeah. so when he was going, a lot of the paparazzi, they were in town trying to catch shots of michael b. jordan aand michael b.tallone. jordan was standing there because there's a big rocky statue right next to the set. right. and while they're filming, you can see michael b. jordan looking up at the rocky statue, and he's crying. so when everyone saw that, they're like, oh, my goodness, does this mean that sylvester stallone dies in the film? they were trying to figure out all the scoop. rumor alert. rumor alert. there was rumors everywhere. but they went to great lengths to try to make sure that no rumors went out. whenever they were filming, especially on the rocky steps, they had people stand there with umbrellas to block the shot, to block the view, so no one could really see what was about to happen, because they were afraid that stuff would
10:46 pm
leak out. so now we wonder, hmm, i wonder if they planted that and made michael b. jordan do that scene just to make us think there was going to be something. that scene wasn't in the movie; right? no, no, no. we never see that in the movie. it was a great film and deserved to be nominated. michael b. jordan deserved to be nominated as well. all right, so one of the biggest things about the oscars, obviously, is the fashion and glam. and the ideas of the paparazzi and the cameras and the dresses and the suits. and, you know, annie has that covered. of course she does. tell us, is it a glam or is it a really slam? all right, kevin and alex, you know i always appreciate the risk takers when it comes to the red carpet. they are those who tend to step out of the box and go a little risquãë, or shall we say slam. but there's also those who hit the mark when it comes to glam. so coming up, we're going to see who made the slam or glam mark. but, first, here's kevin with meryl streep like you've never seen her before. now do double time. now do triple time. [music]. is that right?
10:49 pm

i love the nude undertone under the dress. i like that. it's pretty. ooh, i would say in between, a little over the top with the boob hanging out. so a big -- slam. i would say glam. it's very nice, very conservative, black, safe. i'll say glam. she's beautiful. i love her. i love her, all her choices she's always picked. she's always really nice. j-lo, calm it down. that's a slam. that's too much. i like the sleeves. i like the little trail she's got going on there, and the sexy leg, glam. ooh, i would have to say slam. that looks like a little whale-ish. it seems like she should have ironed that. oh, slam. i don't -- it looks like she's wearing a trash bag. oh, no, we can't even go there. no, no comment. [music]. oh, yeah. oh, no is right. i think he said it best. okay, so maybe melissa's dress wasn't a winner. but you know who won on the red carpet, is helen mirren. oh, yeah. she was a show stopper in this dresses. and she's 70 years old. she looks amazing. she went with a classic look, the silver sparkly look, and her loose curls, her jewelry, pulls everything together, and

10:57 pm
it's all right. so let's get to it. let's test your knowledge, your movie knowledge. the first question for you, kev -- i have not seen these questions. no. this is a first hearing them. yeah, yeah. okay. what was the first movie in color to win a best picture. that's easy. you're giving me softballs now. no, answer the question. it's gone with the wind. it's not time to be overly confident. it's gone with the wind; right? it's gone with the wind. you're right. yeah. yeah. what? okay, i'm next. who holds the record for the most best actress nominations? well meryl streep, 18. you're right. meryl streep. oh, he's good. i only know that because i was researching her. all right. all right. who holds the record for the most best actor nominations? jack nicholson. i know that only because he's -- i think he's been nominated 11 or 12 times. yeah. okay. okay, my turn. who were the only brothers to receive oscar nominations? only brothers? uh-huh. like two brothers? oh, i see the panic. it's setting in. come on, come on, come on. wait, wait, wait, two brothers? okay, it's river phoenix in 1998, and joaquin phoenix. i did not know that; all right.
10:58 pm
you got me on that. now my confidence is gone. who was the youngest actress to ever win an oscar. tatum o'neal for paper moon. okay, name the person who received the most academy awards at a single ceremony, and how many oscars that person won? i honestly don't know. i don't know the answer to that. walt disney. oh, walt disney, he's the most nominated person of all time, 59 nominations. all right. all right. all right. name the two motion picture trilogies that have received picture nominations for each installment. lord of the rings. yes. and? lord of the rings and god father. yes. [bell rings]. yes. okay, the only x-rated film to win best picture? don't -- oh, wait, wait, wait. he's acting like he doesn't know this one. i actually don't know this one. but, wait, wait, wait. i don't know it. i don't know it. okay, it's midnight cowboy. okay, but that eventually got rated r. okay. all right. all right. all right. the only person to win an oscar for playing a member of the opposite sex? i don't know the answer.
10:59 pm
i don't know it. i don't know it. linda hunt, 1983. all right. and i have to give you more credit, when you said "midnight cowboy," okay, it was later edited and given an r rating. it was given an r rating. so that was kind of tricky. yeah, i knew it. so i'll give you a half point. how about that? thank you. that's pretty good. it's more than i could do. yeah. thanks. but one more thing before we go, this years the oscar acceptance speeches are going to look and sound a little bit different, and that's because ey're limited to only 45 seconds. so you know when people go up to the stand and they're talking and talking and the music cuts them off. i hate when they cut them off, though. i do too. i hate it. but come on. it's so disrespectful. so this year it's going to be scrolling on the bottom of the screen. so i feel like she would try this out, what do you say? yeah. i want to thank my mom and dad for -- i want to thank, laura, my fiancãëe and my dog, oscar. okay, what about my friends. my mom and dad. i want to thank all of philly. let's see. my aunt and uncle, steve and charlene. my producer, jeff.
