the news starts right now. we begin tonight with a solemn tribute to a fallen prince william county police officer that lit up the night sky. i'm shawn yancy. >> and i'm tony perkins. community members lined the street as hundreds of officers escorted the body of ashley guindon to a chapel. >> she was killed over the weekend as she responded to a domestic violence call. it was her first full day on the job. >> police say the other victim in this case crystal hamilton was also killed moments after calling 911 about a fight with her husband, ronald. police say ronald hamilton is the gunman who killed both the women. we have continuing team kovrnltion on this story. we begin with marina marraco who has more on tonight's tribute. marina? >> reporter: yeah, tony, it was absolutely beautiful and at the same time so sad to witness

firsthand this procession just as so many agencies from across the dmv united to guide that hearse from the funeral division and then ultimately to help in memorial chapel where tomorrow this community will say their final goodbyes. >> i can't. >> a community in mourning lined out on the county streets with hands over their hearts and tears streaming down faces of hundreds who did not know officer guindon but carried the pain of her loss. >> i have a child too. it's just sad. so sad. to think that, you know,

you know. it just makes it even worse. >> children too young to understand left flowers and cards at this memorial. >> my cousin? she wants to become a police officer and stuff like this gets me really scared because that's my cousin. i love her and i wouldn't want anything like this to happen to her. >> reporter: the display of love and respect was silent, but it spoke louder and deeper than words could translate. >> incredible. so many people from so many counties came here. >> customs, border patrol, transit police. there were multiple agencies out tonight paying their respects. because all in all, they're all one. it doesn't matter what patch or which county they wear. they're all doing the same job to protect their communities. >> reporter: and tomorrow the viewing will start at 10:00 in the morning following by the

funeral service at noon. both of them will be open to the public and ultimately officer guindon will be laid to rest in her native state of massachusetts. live tonight in woodbridge, marina marraco, fox 5 local news. >> meanwhile the suspect in these shootings remains in jail being held without bond. 32-year-old staff sergeant ronald hamilton appeared in court. he is facing multiple charges including capital murder. he merderred his wife and then used a rifle to shoot and kill officer guindon and wound two others. he was convicted of assault in another state ten years ago. >> his wife's friend and family are still in shock that crystal hamilton is gone. the 29-year-old mother affectionately known as chrissy. we're told they were high school sweethearts who had been married for 1

>> ronny seemed like an upright person when i met him. he was all smiles, very intelligent, very intellectual. i felt okay, this is a good match for my sister. >> reporter: chrissy hamilton's sister. neighbors are planning a vigil tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. in front of the family's home in woodbridge. meantime reports that crystal hamilton and her husband were allegedly fighting before she was killed. we know she called 911 for help and was later found dead in her home. tisha lewis is live in woodbridge with that part of the story. >> reporter: first and foremost we don't know for sure about the history of domestic violence here and if there was one that existed. what we do know is that this incident, as you mentioned, has sparked a conversation and dialogue about domestic vii license. what i can tell you is that long after this memorial is gone, this neighborhood, this

this community will never be the same. we did have a chance to sit in on a support group of domestic violence survivors who say this incident is yet another reminder why it's so important for people to get help. >> i have the right to be safe. >> i have the right to love and be loved. >> reporter: this weekly gathering was posted by action in the community through services, also known as acts. the organization is based in dumfries and is the largest of its kind here in prince william county. this tragedy was likely not the first altercation between the hamiltons and they go on to say there were likely warning signs that may have been missed. >> they isolate them from family and friends, they limit their access to funds, and ey

primary. there is a lot at stake, but despite donald trump's continued success in the polls, a lot can happen tomorrow. sarah simmons is here with what super tuesday will mean for the candidates moving forward. sarah? >> the insulths continue to fly on the republican side as marco rubio anded teds cruz try to stop mement up going into tomorrow. both sides have a lot at stake on super tuesday. the candidates spent money making their last minute pitch to the voters. hillary clinton made an appearance at george mason university one of several stops around the state. polls show her in a solid lead over bernie sanders. on the republican side, things are a little more interesting. donald trump is still riding high in the polls and is tapping into the frustration many voters are feeling. >> i deal with real estate people, i deal with people

much tougher than the people i'm dealing with. but they're more honest in a certain way. politicians are very dishonest people. i've never seen such deception. >> a lot of it is now momentum. if he runs the table on super tuesday, it's going to be really hard to stop him. >> reporter: political analysts in american university is looking closely at texas the state with the most delegates in tomorrow's primary. if donald trump beats ted cruz in his home state of texas, he believes trump will be difficult to stop. >> if ted cruz does win texas, if donald trump's numbers don't go as high as he would like them to be, if marco rubio and ted cruz start bumping up against donald trump's lead, people might begin to say he's slowing down. >> reporter: cruz and rubio are on the attack. some see rubio's new-found trump-like tactic

desperation. trump's endorsement by the kkk doesn't seem to be making a dent in his numbers so far. >> if this incident sort of seep into the voters' minds, if his tax issue and the fact that he isn't releasing his tax returns, if that seeps into voters' minds, some of those late deciders may go for somebody else. >> and in another interesting report, the new york times has a secret off the record tape that indicates donald trump may be flexible over his immigration plans. cruz is pushing trump to release the tape to the public. >> what zoo keepers found to force them to temporarily close a popular exhibit. also ahead tonight several maryland schools were locked down for hours. what we've learned about that attack. hey, sue, what are you working on? >> we're working

a 17-year-old is in critical condition tonight after police say someone shot him in a bus stop in green belt. tonight the search continues for the gunman. it happened before 9:00 a.m. on green belt road. the shooting caused police to lock down nearby duval high and goddard middle school. one witness told us she saw two people running from the scene. >> i saw the guy drive down in the middle of the road and two young boys were running, one had a red jacket, they had pack

backs on, they ran behind the building. a few minutes later before police arrived that was the last thing that i saw crouched down behind a gentleman, it was scary. >> police believe this is an ongoing dispute between the victim and the shooter. if you have any information call prince george's county police. more federal charges were filed today against the former prince george's county school volunteer accused of producing child pornography. a federal grand jury indicted deonte carraway. the federal indictment involves 11 victims. >> there are new developments tonight in the case of two high-profile murders voflg college students in virginia. a prosecutor says jessie matthew is expected to enter guilty pleas in the death of

graham and morgan harrington. he's already serving life in prison for a sexual assault in fairfax county. >> and new developments in the fight between apple and the fbi over unlocking iphone data. today a judge said the u.s. justice department cannot force apple to provide the fbi access to locked iphone data. the ruling involves a routine drug case in brooklyn, new york. but the discussion comes as the fbi is trying to get apple to give them access to the iphone of one of the shooters in the san bernardino massacre. >> it would have allowed home school students to participate in public school sports. the bill is named after former star quarterback tim tebow. he was home schooled and allowed to play football for his local

high school team. a new law requiring salt warnings in some new york city restaurants has been put on hold for now. it was said to take effect tomorrow. it would have required chain and fast food restaurants to warn diners about sodium. if the law had again into effect, restaurants would have been fined $200 for each violation. >> we turn to the weather now. let's take a live look outside. there's your washington monument. it felt more like spring than winter out there today. i understand that is not going to last. sue palka joins us with a first look at your forecast. >> there sure are promising signs though because tomorrow march 1st is coming in like a lamb and it's the first day of meteorological spring. we do have a couple of bumps in the road as we start transitioning the

of march. it was nice to finally ditch those winds today wasn't it? the winds have settled down and these are the high temperatures we had around the region. average is 51 for this time of year, so definitely bargain territory. as we look around the area tonight, not bitter cold. it's really very comfortable as a matter of fact. still at 54, that's about 3 degrees above our average high here in the city and it's going to be fairly comfortable overnight. we had one front come through, another one will get closer and kind of washout which means we won't be too terribly cold tonight. some places will dip into the 30s with clear skies. things start out great tomorrow. our sunrise forecast with this fantastic picture should be about 42 degrees with the sun coming up at 6:40. by the way the sun started setting today at 6:00. the first time we've been at 6:00 and now we'll see it continue to getting later and later as we get close to daylight saving time. here's what we expect

a man was shot today on langston please, southeast. police say they're looking for three people. also in the district, dozens of members of law enforcement were honored for their service tonight. the u.s. attorney's office for the district of columbia held its annual law enforcement awards ceremony. nearly 200 federal, state

following some breaking news out of southeast dc. you're looking live at the scene of what we now know is a deadly house fire on massachusetts avenue near southern avenue. we're told the flames in the single family home broke out around 8:00 tonight. there's no word yet on the cause of this fire. we'll bring you more details as they come in. >> funeral services are set for tomorrow for the prince william county police officer killed during her first day on the job. officer ashley guindon's viewing will be held in woodbridge be

tomorrow. the suspected gunman ronald hamilton is peered in court today. he's being held without bond on capital murder charges. >> a teenaged boy was shot and critically injured at a bus stop in prince george's county. the shooting put two schools on lockdown this morning. they believe it had no link to the schools. police are still searching for the two suspects. >> and we are just hours away from super tuesday. the single biggest delegate grab of all the days in the primary process. polls show republican donald trump with a commanding lead and hillary clinton in the lead for the democrats. a montgomery koinlt community is demanding action tonight after three members of the same family were killed in a tragic crash in bethesda. >> this happened saturday night at the intersection of river and pyle roads. there's no traffic signal there so drivers are on their own when it comes to crossing the high

>> reporter: grief counselors were on hand at bethesda's wallet whitman high school. >> we are on hold with a lot of classes. >> reporter: they are trying to help this community deal with the death of a 17-year-old and his 15-year-old sister who was critically injured in a crash. >> a lot of the student testimony, they talked about tommy who died and helena who was struggling brought a lot of comfort and understanding to students and the staff. >> reporter: it happened at 7:00 saturday night. and people there who will tell you the image of that crash and what they saw was unforgettable. >> it's just horrible. i can't believe it. >> people tried to help immediately but it was a

>> the bmw was heading up river road. a man was driving down in a chevy volt with his family. when the volt made a left-hand turn it was hit by the bmw. 15-year-old helena was the only member of the family to survive. >> you've got to remember, this was a terrific or horrific crash. and she's got a long way to go. >> reporter: now, an online outpouring of caring and action is under way. this u caring page is collecting donations. 3,000 people have signed on to this petition demanding that the maryland state highway administration put a traffic signal at this spot where right now there is none. >> a lot of people are signing in, sharing it on facebook and we definitely think it's an important thing. >> reporter: so far no charges have been filed in this case. police say they're waiting for the toxicology reports on both drivers. they cannot say yet if speed was a fac

tom fitzgerald, fox 5 local news. >> an online search of court records shows that the driver who hit the family had ten moving violations in the last three years, including negligent driving and speeding and pleaded guilty to three of them. police say the maryland state's attorney's office will decide whether or not to file charges in this case. >> a fairfax county middle school student is in some serious trouble tonight over emojis she's posted online. she posted a threatening message on instagram back in december. here's an example of what that message may have looked like. according to a search warrant, the girl's post included the words "killing" and "meet me in the library tuesday." she admitted to posting the message under another student's name. her mother says that message was in response to bullying. the girl is charged with threatening the school and computer harassment. >> an arlington man is being held without bond tonight in connection wit

woman. the 19-year-old is charged with abduction and sexual assault. police say he tried to sexually assault the woman last summer. as he tried to remove the victim's shorts, investigators say she bit his hand and he ran off. arlington county police are also looking into whether he was involved in a series of adults along the bike trail last summer. in the district, saen saente tribbel spent 28 years in a dc prison for a crime he didn't commit. now a judge has ordered the city to pay him more than $13 million. he was wrongly convicted of killing a taxi driver in 1978. he was exonerated in 2012 by dna efforts. >> still to come tonight, the push on capitol hill to make your next flight a little more comfortable. >> and caught on camera, the tough lesson this guy learned after he had tried to avoid a subway fare and failed miserably.

bit behind it but we will be getting colder as we go forward. colder air is going to be coming into town for the late week. that's a big part of our weather headline going forward. this cold shot will be around into the thursday-friday time frame, just as a system begins to approach that could potentially bring us a little bit of early march snow. caitlin will have more on that in just a minute. but here's another really great thought, and first of all, fantastic picture. i cannot get enough of it. great picture. today daylight, 11 hours and 19 minutes. the sun going down at 6:00. sunrise at 6:41 and we are going to see a beautiful day tomorrow at 62 degrees. most of the day will be just fine. some clouds increase closer to sunset. the rain around in the first part of wednesday, that 54 will probably hit that pretty early and drop throughout the day. wednesday will be turning colder and it will be getting windy and that will set us up for what we will have to watch for the end of the week. tonight is

are some spots that are chilly like cull pickuper at 35. a big spread tonight but generally not that cold. and this is a little bit of the moisture that we'll be watching coming with the frontal boundary for tomorrow night. and we'll keep a close eye on that because there will be a potential for a little bit of mix not too far from our

>> the question is which track that dictates what if any precipitation we'll get. these scenarios usually can go three different ways. a more inland track and we saw that last week brought us a warm storm with heavy rain and severe weather. with high pressure blocking on all sides i think that's

unlikely. we're back to two other potential storm tracks one which would be mostly east ward, that is favorable for snow and possibly accumulating snow somewhere in the dc area up through the mid add lant particular. we've also seen the chance for it to go further to the south basically being cut off by high pressure and if we get that it will be mainly dry. regardless national weather service has put the area under a slight risk for thursday into friday. we will be following that all week long. within the may not be over yet. we'll see if we've got one more week of the snow. >> all right, if we must, caitlin. >> most of us don't remember the days when news was broadcast in black and white. but one of our core workers here at fox 5 does. he's had a front row seat to the evolution of tv. >> and tonight we are congratulating mike
