. right now at 10:00, the search for a missing firefighter is over. more than one week after her disappearance. the remains of a woman found today in a remote area of shenendoah national park. >> plus, the passing of a musical icon. prince is dead at the age of 57. what we've learned about his death and where he was spotted just hours before he died. there is a lot of news to report tonight. we thank you for joining us. i'm tch. >> and i'm sarah simmons in for shawn. the news of course still sinking in right now. music legend prince rogers nelson has died at the age of 57. he was found inside an elevator in his minnesota home.

members of the sheriff department performed cpr but it was just too late. he was pronounced dead after 10:00 this morning. >> tmz is reporting that prince was rushed to an illinois hospital six days ago where he was treated for a drug overdose. tmz has obtained this exclusive foet of prince that was taken at 7:00 last night outside of a walgreens pharmacy. this was the fourth time that prince visited that pharmacy this week. his reps previously said he had been battling the flu. >> people around the world are mourning the loss of the 7-time grammy winner. tisha lewis is where fans gathered to pay their respects. >> reporter: this marquis above me says it all. i posted it on social media, it said prince, a legend. you will be missed. if you come th

with me, i want to show you what we're seeing right now. there is this candle light memorial that is glowing outside the warner theater in memory of prince. he performed here last june before sold-out crowds. we spoke with a whom who was there and she has attended a prince concert nearly every year for most of her life and she's taken a piece of history with her along the way. >> ticket stubs, unopened albums, backstage passes and more fill this maryland home turned shrine in memory of prince. >> i was crushed. i was crushed. because we always thought about that day coming. like nah, he's not going to die any time soon. but here he is. >> ultimate prince fan was emotional during our

>> i've liked prince since 1979? i was nine. >> reporter: now, decades later, she is a great grandmother and still a prince fan. she took us down memory lane where her daily inspiration comes from the artist himself. >> probably the p -- pick because he handed it to me. it's one he was just using. >> reporter: she's attended 42 prince concerts and even met the artist in 2002. >> passing in the music club lounge, hi, how are you. i'm good, how are you. and that was it. he doesn't do pictures, he doesn't do autographs. >> but that was enough for you? >> oh, yeah. and being up there. you know, just being there. >> reporter: while prince shied away from cameras, he adored his

and they adore him. and that was the scene just moments ago outside here at warner theater. i want to show you something interesting, prince does have a star that it looked like he received here in 1993 but what is noticeably absent is his signature. you can see for example on some of the other stars there is a signature. even so, plenty of people came by to pay their respects to say their final good-bye to the artist known as prince. tisha lewis, fox 5 local news. >> what you just heard was a performance by prince during a rally in baltimore. the music legend held the event following the riots i

the search for a missing fairfax county firefighter is now suspended after investigators discovered female remains. virginia state police say the remains are that of nicole mittendorff. let's get right to jennifer davis who has the latest on this developing story. jenny? >> reporter: at this point it is just a preliminary identification, but on a website devoted to her search, the announcement this evening, nicole has been found. and a picture of a candle here at station 32 where she worked a candle continues to glow back there at a memorial they set up for her. they said they were going to leave it lit until she returned home safely and despite the sad news this evening, it does continue to glow. they do believe the remains of a woman

mittendorff. they do not suspect foul play. a team of national park service and virginia state police personnel say they found the remains at about 2:00 today in a remote location. it was more than a mile from the white oak canyon parking area. her body was 300 yards from the trail. on a facebook page called find nicole that more than 18,000 people were following, her family posted tonight saying our hearts are broken. we thank you for your support and we ask that you keep our family in your prayers in the challenging days ahead. mittendorff had called in shift for one shift and she did not show for another. her father has said repeatedly that slee was extremely dedicated to her job. the shift that she s

to work, they are due in tomorrow morning. we're told it could be a very difficult shift for those folks. they've worked together for a long time and are like family. we're also told the fire chief will be coming by tomorrow to visit them and share in their grief. back to you. >> jennifer davis reporting live. thank you. switching gears here, we've had some really nice weather this week. it's been dry but that is expected to change tomorrow. sue palka joining us now. how much of the rain do we expect to get? >> it's not looking like there's going to be a lot of rain. there will be some showers, a lot of clouds around and maybe a rumble of thunder and it also looks like the bulk of any rain we see will perhaps hold off until tomorrow afternoon. we can't rule out there might not be a few showers especially west in the morning. let me show you where that rain is now. we had a few showers along the i-81 corridor earlier this evening and even a rumble of thunder but those have dissipated and we're probably going to be dry overnight. we've got to wait for that front to get closer and it will do so

will spread a much better chance for some showers in here with just some clouds overnight. and again, i'm expecting that while you might have a spotty shower around in the morning, the better chance of seeing anything is tomorrow afternoon. we really need rain. we're about 3 inches down in the last eight weeks. this is probably not going to do a whole lot to provide a lot of water for the roads, for the gardens, for the streams and certainly for shenandoah where it is so terribly dry. but maybe we get .10 to 0.30 inch. there could be a rumble around the time of the evening rush hour. it's getting mild tonight, still 67 degrees our high temperature today getting up to 67 degrees. we're very slow to fall. south winds will keep us mild overnight. i think we only dropped 62 degrees, maybe upper

>> all lanes on the woodrow wilson bridge have reopened after it was shut down due to reports of a suspicious package. you can see emergency vehicles there right now. the bomb squad was called in to assist state police. the package was described as a brown cardboard box with red wires and duct tape. the woodrow wilson bridge has reopened tonight. >> yesterday was an emotional day as prince george's county firefighters paid their final respects to john ulmschneider. as his comrades coming back from funeral services, they found out they are never really off duty. >> this is kind of an interesting story, an interesting coincidence considering what they had to go through yesterday here they are saving lives. it's a surprise when you consider what they were going through. a perfect example of showing courage even in the worst possible circumstance. he just finished up duty during

the services he was heading home when he saw this. this is a car with smoke and fire. both he and retired fire chief discovered a woman inside that car. they knew exactly what to do. >> we initially tried to gain entry from the driver's side but while we were trying that she inadvertently hit the gas pedal we decided it was time to take her out from the passenger. >> we do it because we enjoy it and it's a privilege to be able to serve the citizens and save a life. >> more firefighters will lend a hand. we are hearing that the woman in the car had some kind of medical emergency. she is expected to be just fine. >> now to fairfax county where police are trying to figure out what led to the death of a teenager who was found unresponsive in a school bathroom. officers were called to the school in burke, virginia around

when they arrived they found a 16-year-old unresponsive in the school's bathroom. she was later pronounced dead at the hospital. >> this is not a common situation to find a 16-year-old female unresponsive at the high school and later passes. we want to make sure the parents are aware we don't believe there is a threat to safety at this time. >> if you know anything about the death, you're asked to call police. >> developing in the district, a dc police officer has been arrested in connection with a road rage incident that happened two months ago on i-295. 46-year-old michael minor is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. investigators say he was off duty in his own car when he got into an altercation with another driver. both parties exited their vehicles and minor allegedly drew his service weapon. the chief says it fractures the relationship between the community and the police.

killing a secret service officer appeared in dc superior court this afternoon. a judge ordered maurice bellamy without bond. he is also accused of shooting to death a 15-year-old at the deanwood metro station last month. witnesses told police he used the same gun in both crimes, but a crime expert who examined the slugs said the markings were close but not an exact match. >> it is a sad and tragic end for a two-year-old girl in fairfax county tonight. investigators say the child was in the care of the mother's boyfriend who claims he forgot about the toddler after dropping off two other kids this morning. it wasn't until several hours later when he picked up the mother that he realized the child was still in the car. >> it hit my heart really hard. it's a tragedy and i feel it

we are back now with disturbing news out of the district. dc public schools will have hundreds of students tested for lead after high levels were found in drinking water at three elementary schools. here are the schools affected.

street northeast, payne elementary school in east and capitol hill montessori school. all compromised water sources have been shut down. >> staying in the district now, even though we are getting close to the end of the school year, some high school students are about to have a schedule change. the school system has decided to stagger the release times of mckinley tech high and dunnbar. they're doing this to try to avoid potential fights between the rival schools. bob barnard reports. >> reporter: this is a situation involving students at nearby mckinley tech and dunbar high schools. who after school have been fighting here at the metro station. most recently last monday. an incident caught in a photograph. this was after school last monday about a hundred students we're told. ten police cars involved, two

it started at a nearby fast food restaurant and spilled over here to the metro station. this is apparently a long-standing rye ralry. now they're trying to break things up by starting next monday, splitting the dismissal times. students at mckinley tech will get out at 3:05, dunbar students at 3:25. they'll start early or later. in a statement to fox 5 news, a spokesperson says a staggered timing will allow a 20-minute gap between dismissals which will mean fewer students heading to the metro station at the same time. we are committed to fostering a learning environment where students feel safe in school and to and from school. here's some reaction this morning from some mckinley tech students. >> i don't know if it will be much of a difference. some people stay after school around that 10-minute time. so i feel like it

too much of a difference. >> i think it's smart. because like it is kind of like a lot of kids here at the same time. from what they've told us it's because it's a lot of kids at the station at the same time. >> and sometimes they fight. >> yeah. >> is it upsetting when just kids going home and all of a sudden other kids have said there's no reason there has just been a rivalry thing. >> especially when it's your friends and you don't want to see them hurt or anything because anything can happen. it could be really upsetting but it's raisy how everything just go down. >> what do you think about them changing the dismissal times? >> i think it's good, anything could still happen. >> of course there's no telling whether changing the dismissal times will have an impact, but dcps says they're trying to do something. bob barnard, fox

to be her remains were discovered in the shenandoah national forest today. evidence including a suicide note leads them to believe there was no foul play. >> a woman is alive thanks to a fire chief who was on his way home when he saw this car on fire. he was able to rescue a woman who was trapped inside who apparently suffered a medical emergency. she is expected to be just fine. >> if you ride a bike or walk in the district, a new proposed law will make it easier to be compensated if you're hurt or if your property is damaged in a collision with a driver. >> the act passed today and is on its way to the full council for consideration. >> reporter: now more than ever drivers of cars are having to share dc roads with those riding bikes, even people who walked to and from work. under this new proposed legislation, some councilmembers believe it levels the playing field when it comes t

following an accident. the mad dash to and from work these days isn't always behind the wheel. for many riding a bike or walking are more common. council member marry che who often rides her bike to city haul is backing legislation that. >> we're one of the remaining jurisdictions that have contributory negligence that will put you out of business if you are even slightly at fault. >> reporter: under current law if a driver is at fault but if a biker or pedestrian even makes a minor mistake, then the rider or walker might be out of luck. >> let's say you were traveling on a bike and a big truck hit you and went through a stop sign and all kinds of things. but you at the same time didn't put your arm out to signal a turn or something that was so minor and really had very little to do with the accident in any event, that could be enough to eliminate

>> this piece of legislation is not a done deal yet. it passed the judiciary committee today and is on its way for a full council vote and then the mayor will have to sign off on it. in the district, matt ackland, fox 5 local news. >> the florida man who landed his gyrocopter on the capitol grounds will spend the next four months in prison. he pleaded guilty to one count of flying without a proper license. he admits he flew into the space as a publicity stunt. he wanted to bring the attention to big money in politics and planned to deliver letters to members of congress. >> voters will head to the polls in five states next week including maryland. tud cruz made an a stop in frederick. mike emanuel has more tonight. >> reporter: these are unusual times in what is typically blue maryland looking

important gop primary next week. ohio governor john kasich has already been on the ground hoping to earn some of the state's 38 delegates. >> this is an important one we have to accumulate delegates. >> the average of recent polls has donald trump leading kasich by 14.7 points with senator ted cruz running third. >> i believe the people of maryland want to get behind a positive, optimistic, forward-looking conservative campaign based on policy and ideas and solutions. >> maryland is very big, a lot of delegates. we've got to vote. and here's what's going to happen and here is what i promise you folks. if i win, it will be a lot to do with right here. >> reporter: and while trump has been leading in many places, a maryland pole ster didn't expect him to connect as well with voters here. >> donald trump has the name recognition. and he's captured s

certainly nationally and it looks like maryland might not be immune to that. there's still something in the air that he's captured in terms of people's frustration with national politics. >> what is unique about maryland this year is there's a republican governor in larry hogan who is in support of fellow governor chris christie now could be a potential king maker. >> i have a call into him right now. i don't know him very well but his approval ratings are so high, if i could get close to him, it would be good for me. >> kasich admires this fellow governor who he has has led as a centris. >> he's a unifier. he's been somebody who has been able to provide some economic improvement here. but as a unifier, people trust him. >> aids to the governor say he is not planning on endorsing anyone before marylanders go to vote.

arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault in silver spring. a 21-year-old faces rape, assault and armed robbery charges. on april 6th police say they responded to a call at the sheraton hotel. investigators say the 23-year-old victim agreed to meet at her room. the pair had met online. when the victim opened the door, she claims the suspect held a knife to her throat, robbed her, assaulted her and left the scene. >> our tribute to prince continues here on fox 5. wait until you hear what donnie had to say about the night he spent with prince and david bowie. we'll be right back. >> from counting sheep to counting money. around six out of ten americans are losing sleep over money and problems about monday saving for retirement, paying for

donnie met prince several times over the years. he started to tell me a story i had never heard before, involving prince and david bowie. check it out. >> david was on my show, "video soul." it was a wednesday and after the show i told him we were going to minneapolis to do a special on "the time" that friday. he says i'm playing minneapolis friday night. you ought to come and see me. absolutely. there's only like six seats there but i bumped the lady in front of me and i said "excuse me, ma'am." and prince turned around. hi, donnie. ha, prince, sorry about that. >> cool man, look. i'm having a party tonight at paisley park. you ought to come. cool, we do that. so we go to the

i mean, it's such a small party. it was like me, ray, prince, cat his dancer, david bowie and some of his band members. and the dj. he was listening to the black album. this is when it was unreleased. as a matter of fact i remember telling him that night that this is such a groove. and that came back to me two or three years later, maybe. i don't know where we were then but we were talking and prince says you know you're the reason i didn't release the black album. i said what do you mean? he said do you remember what you said that night at paisley park, you said this was such a groove and i was about so much more than that. >> wow. that is amazing. for those who don't know, the black album was this famous album that prince recorded and everyone was awe

it's certainly not a wash-out and i wouldn't be surprised if some people don't see any rain. there will be some scattered around, but best chance in the afternoon. you should be prepared for a sure but it looks more likely that you have to dodge rain in the afternoon. we so badly need the rain. this is by no means going to put a dent in that but it will settle the dust and help out with that brush fire out in shenandoah. let's look athe the temperatures today above average at 76 degrees at bwi and reagan. it's so nice out tonight. we're going to stay very mild overnight with a strong south breeze coming up and keeping us even a little bit humid tomorrow morning. i think it will stay dry tonight. we did have a couple of showers earlier with a little impulse. that has all gone away and i think it will be sometime after dawn before we see a chance for a few scattered showers and there could be a rumble

thunder but the better chance is tomorrow afternoon. speaking of the evening on friday, keep the rain gear handy for that just in case. right now the weekend looking great. if anything there could be a shower that lingers early saturday morning, but it wouldn't last long and we should break for sunshine no later than late morning to noon. it looks like next week is going to be very warm. you can see why we're going to have to wait a while for any more showers. we have the clouds, warm breezes out of the south and this is what we'll be waiting for as well as more of the energy behind that next approaching boundary. this is a frontal boundary that will be pushing a lot of warm air, slightly humid air in our direction tomorrow morning. we'll build that up and as the front crosses in the afternoon, a little better shot as seeing some of the showers and a rumble of thunder. it looks like it's going to be a dry start for our commute which is always quite helpful. pausing this at lech:00 because we're trying to get our fox 5

and 11. right now close call. if you're going to be heading down there, keep an umbrella handy just in case. we do see most of those moving through during the lunch hour. a little bit quiet for the early part of the evening and we see a few more showers and storms trying to fire up even around the hagerstown area around 8:00. a few scattered showers. and then saturday morning, last piece of energy may be swing on through to bring us a few showers in the morning, we can't rule that out but certainly clearing in the afternoon. you can see what i'm talking about where more people may not see rain that actually see it. not a lot in the forecast. but boy these mild temperatures are going to hang tough and next week looks warm as well. we are 67 degrees that's only a degree below our average high for the day and we'll only drop to 62 for tonight with upper 50s in the suburbs. a lot of clouds, a very mild

night. you can see how many clouds we're expecting and you can see we start out on a dry note but generally a cloudy day tomorrow with a better chance of showers and storms in the afternoon. weekend, not bad. we might have to add a shower to the first part of saturday at this point, but the temperature certainly looks great as the clouds break up, we head for 72 on saturday. sunday 75 degrees, as warm as 86. there could be some 90s next week. certainly on monday our temperature drops a little for tuesday with another chance for some showers. partly cloudy wednesday and thursday back in the 70s. so definitely feeling like more of a june forecast right now than a april forecast. all right, tony and sarah, that's your 7-day forecast. we'll have another update in a few minutes. >> we want to share with you an exciting event taking place tomorrow on "good day dc." we will be broadcasting live with a special tribute to prince. if you can't be at the park,
