older buildings and home across the dmv could be at risk for potentially dangerous levels of drinking water. a dozen schools have elevated lead levels. >> definitely want to make sure your kids are safe, especially my babies. that's a health concern for anyone. that water is very important. >> reporter: marcus has four daughters who attend elementary school in northeast. it's one of 12 schools with lead levels above the environmental protection agency standards. >> i'm sure whatever it is they're taking care of it. >> reporter: michael and son plumbing guru says schools, homes and buildings could be at risk for elevated lead levels in the drinking water. >> since the incident in flint, we've had calls about people

filtration. >> if schools are having trouble is there hope for you at home. >> they have a resin based water softener installed in your home because that actually can remove all the lead. if you're concerned about it, the best thing to do is take a water sample and send it to an independent lab. make sure that it's certified to test for lead and have it tested. >> reporter: the cost to fix the problem is based on how many water sources are at risk. dc public schools says nearly 4,000 tests were performed, 17 water sources across the district had high levels of lead. at minor elementary school filters are being used. letters went home to parents tonight. dcps is recommending they contact their pediatrician. tisha lewis, fox 5 local news. >> lead poisoning can be hard to detect, too. according to the

children with it can show symptoms of learning disabilities, even hearing loss. people with froe longed exposure to lead may also be at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease and reduced fertility. >> the search continues tonight for the shooter or shooters who fatally shot eight family members execution style in ohio. seven adults and a 16-year-old boy were found this morning in four separate homes just a few miles apart. three kids survived including a four-day-old who was sleeping next to his slain mother. they do not have a motive in the shooting. police have made an arrest after a deadly stabbing and a bomb scare. they found a man covered in blood and a woman dead. the building was evacuated as officer conducted a search. >> reporter: dc police have arrested a 59-year-old man for what investigators describe

domestic-related killing here at this condominium building. the man has been identified and according to property records lives in a unit that's owned by a non-profit that helps the homeless with chronic mental health issues. the residents of this building were kept outside for more than three hours this morning as police conducted a search. this is the man taken into custody earlier today by dc police. he has been identified as 59-year-old charles sikes. online property records show he's lived at this address since 2000 inside a unit on the fifth floor owned by the nonprofit anne frank house. a group that provides housing for men and women with chronic

there was an individual inside of the apartment who subsequently expired as a result of injuries. at this time it appears to be domestic related and all parties involved, as far as witnesses, are cooperating. >> the investigation went on for hours as police wept through the building looking for a suspicious package. the bomb squad was called in and according to a person with knowledge of the search, numerous pages had to be examined by police. neighbors were stunned to learn ai murder had taken place inside their building. >> it a very safe neighborhood. and a wonderful building to live in. and something that needs to happen, it's just unbelievable. >> that's so sad. and i've never seen so many police cars. i've counted about 15 and two fire trucks. it's amazing. wreef never had anything -- well i hope we never have anything again leak this.

you won't have to worry about driver's ed in the district any time soon. >> may 1st would require new drivers to complete extensive education classes before getting a license now they're making a u-turn. jennifer davis live behind the wheel with the story. you are licensed, right? >> i am licensed, i'm safely parked, and yes. the extensive training we're talking about here would have involved 30 hours of classroom lessons plus eight hours of training behind the wheel all before you can take your driver's test. as you mentioned the city putting the brakes on that plan saying they need to take a much closer look with how this would

impact dc residents. there's a lot to learn to become a licensed driver. and in 2014, the dc dmv decided that would be done with commercial driver's ed courses consisting of 40 hours of classroom and car training to the tune of about $1,000. the city said the rule was aimed at creating saver drivers and reducing accidents but it's now suspended a plan to take a closer look at what it means for residents. is there had been several complaints about the cost of the commercial classes. >> they could do all the classroom work in two hours and instead they make them pay all this money for the 30-hour session. it was a total make work waist of time for everybody. >> that's not to say drivers could use a little education. >> drivers in dc are sometimes i think a little kradsy. >> i think they should slultd have the driving test. driver's

the issue of transgender bathrooms has entered the race for the white house. ted cruz

young girls will be in danger. meantime donald trump says the decision should be left up to the states. >> the comments come after north carolina passed a bill requiring transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds with the sex listed on the birth certificate. after north carolina passed the bill several other states have created similar legislation. lawmakers are making sure dc business owners comply with gender neutral bathroom law. >> reporter: this regulation has been in place for ten years now, but under this program, the district government is asking for people to report if a business is not complying to this regulation. here's how it works. under the rules, a single-use bathroom in dc must be gender neutral. single use means for one person only. here is an example we found at a dc restaurant today. it has both female and male

access. safe bathrooms dc is a way to report places that are not compliant. the office of human rights takes some notification from the public and then sends the business an official warning letter and we're told today in most cases it is resolved right away. >> we send them a letter in the mail and say hey, within 30 days please change your signage and send us a picture of it and we'll close the case immediately. there's no fines, nothing like that. it's just to make sure they make the change. if for some reason a business either wants to refuse to make that change or if they don't respond to us, then we'll file a formal charge of discrimination against the business. >> reporter: the office of human rights says only a few times had they had to take it further than justish youing a letter. in most cases businesses don't realize they're noncompliant but when they do, they make the change right away. in northwest, matt ackland, fox 5 local news. >> a rare look inside prince's paisle
