older buildings and home across the dmv could be at risk for potentially dangerous levels of drinking water. a dozen schools have elevated lead levels. >> definitely want to make sure your kids are safe, especially my babies. that's a health concern for anyone. that water is very important. >> reporter: marcus has four daughters who attend elementary school in northeast. it's one of 12 schools with lead levels above the environmental protection agency standards. >> i'm sure whatever it is they're taking care of it. >> reporter: michael and son plumbing guru says schools, homes and buildings could be at risk for elevated lead levels in the drinking water. >> since the incident in flint, we've had calls about people

filtration. >> if schools are having trouble is there hope for you at home. >> they have a resin based water softener installed in your home because that actually can remove all the lead. if you're concerned about it, the best thing to do is take a water sample and send it to an independent lab. make sure that it's certified to test for lead and have it tested. >> reporter: the cost to fix the problem is based on how many water sources are at risk. dc public schools says nearly 4,000 tests were performed, 17 water sources across the district had high levels of lead. at minor elementary school filters are being used. letters went home to parents tonight. dcps is recommending they contact their pediatrician. tisha lewis, fox 5 local news. >> lead poisoning can be hard to detect, too. according to the

children with it can show symptoms of learning disabilities, even hearing loss. people with froe longed exposure to lead may also be at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease and reduced fertility. >> the search continues tonight for the shooter or shooters who fatally shot eight family members execution style in ohio. seven adults and a 16-year-old boy were found this morning in four separate homes just a few miles apart. three kids survived including a four-day-old who was sleeping next to his slain mother. they do not have a motive in the shooting. police have made an arrest after a deadly stabbing and a bomb scare. they found a man covered in blood and a woman dead. the building was evacuated as officer conducted a search. >> reporter: dc police have arrested a 59-year-old man for what investigators describe

domestic-related killing here at this condominium building. the man has been identified and according to property records lives in a unit that's owned by a non-profit that helps the homeless with chronic mental health issues. the residents of this building were kept outside for more than three hours this morning as police conducted a search. this is the man taken into custody earlier today by dc police. he has been identified as 59-year-old charles sikes. online property records show he's lived at this address since 2000 inside a unit on the fifth floor owned by the nonprofit anne frank house. a group that provides housing for men and women with chronic

there was an individual inside of the apartment who subsequently expired as a result of injuries. at this time it appears to be domestic related and all parties involved, as far as witnesses, are cooperating. >> the investigation went on for hours as police wept through the building looking for a suspicious package. the bomb squad was called in and according to a person with knowledge of the search, numerous pages had to be examined by police. neighbors were stunned to learn ai murder had taken place inside their building. >> it a very safe neighborhood. and a wonderful building to live in. and something that needs to happen, it's just unbelievable. >> that's so sad. and i've never seen so many police cars. i've counted about 15 and two fire trucks. it's amazing. wreef never had anything -- well i hope we never have anything again leak this.

this is what is happening. >> we have always thought of this as a very nice neighborhood. but i guess things can happen anywhere. >> dc police stayed on the scene well into the afternoon and at this hour have still not identified the woman who was killed. so far we've been unable to learn much about mr. sikes other than police have charged him with second degree murder. in northwest, paul wagner, fox 5 local news. >> a sad end to the week-long search for a missing fairfax county firefighter. a medical examiner says 31-year-old nicole mittendorff took her own life. her body was found last night. police also found a suicide note in her car which was more than a mile from her body. she was first reported missing last week after she didn't show up to work. now that the search has finished, the trails have reopened at the nati

turning to your weather now we have some showers moving through the dc area right now but how are things looking for the rest of the weekend? gwen tolbart is here with your forecast. >> hi there. well the good news is the weekend is not a washout. yes we had some showers and they're going to continue tonight as well as into the first part of your saturday. so let's take a look at the radar and show you what's going on out there. right now you can see the wide swath of precipitation moving its way down from the south right up the mid atlantic and a pretty good swath of it, some of it a little heavier in spots than others and as we zoom in closer to home you can see we have a frontal system there and that front as well as a low pressure system are responsible for this. and along the line of it there are a few little thunderstorms that have popped up here and there, isolated in nature. we're going to keep that in mind because we can't rule out we might get an isolated one before the night is over. mild outside, 66 at dc, 65 at baltimore, 63 at

hour. dulles at 64. that's the same for culpeper and 59 degrees to the west at cumberland. 58 degrees is your whoever night low, then mostly cloudy skies with the rain showers that will continue tonight. as i said they won't last all day tomorrow at all and winds are from the southwest. and fairly light. for the weekend we're talking 72 and 73 degrees for daytime highs. sunday is your best bet when it comes to the sunshine but you will see the sun return by saturday afternoon at least. so a few showers early on saturday, but after that, things will start to improve. and wait until you see my 7-day forecast. i think you're going like some of what i have to offer there. back to you. zbld tonight as people continue to mourn the death of prince, we are learning more about the death investigation. >> fox's mike toebin has the latest. >> it's a rorkable loss. >> president obama responding to the death of

you won't have to worry about driver's ed in the district any time soon. >> may 1st would require new drivers to complete extensive education classes before getting a license now they're making a u-turn. jennifer davis live behind the wheel with the story. you are licensed, right? >> i am licensed, i'm safely parked, and yes. the extensive training we're talking about here would have involved 30 hours of classroom lessons plus eight hours of training behind the wheel all before you can take your driver's test. as you mentioned the city putting the brakes on that plan saying they need to take a much closer look with how this would

impact dc residents. there's a lot to learn to become a licensed driver. and in 2014, the dc dmv decided that would be done with commercial driver's ed courses consisting of 40 hours of classroom and car training to the tune of about $1,000. the city said the rule was aimed at creating saver drivers and reducing accidents but it's now suspended a plan to take a closer look at what it means for residents. is there had been several complaints about the cost of the commercial classes. >> they could do all the classroom work in two hours and instead they make them pay all this money for the 30-hour session. it was a total make work waist of time for everybody. >> that's not to say drivers could use a little education. >> drivers in dc are sometimes i think a little kradsy. >> i think they should slultd have the driving test. driver's

young people now, you hear what accidents are under 18 or over 65, so yeah i think it's definitely important. >> there is still a test but for now future drivers will have to study on their own time. >> they better be safe because i got a kid out here. >> reporter: the city says for now this proposal is indefinitely suspended. if you want to take a commercial course, you're still welcome to do that or you can just pick up a study guide if you're a first-time driver and figure it out on your own. back to you guys. >> the man accused in the death of a two-year-old girl is being held without bond. police say a 32-year-old man left his girlfriend's daughter inside a car for nearly 7 hours yesterday in virginia. meanwhile fire officials say many of these are accidental and they've seen these things happen to good people who are good parents. >> just gut wrenching, you could tell it was absolutely unintentional and

lives. it's terrible. don't have the sad tut it could never happen to you. >> fields did tell investigators it was an accident. he faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse. >> fox 5 is in prince george's county tonight where a press conference was held on the issue of gun violence. three years after maryland passed new restrictions on gun ownership, van holland is working on new legislation to prevent weapons used in violent crimes from being brought in from other states. >> it's so important that we act at the national level. that's why it's so important that we take measures to encourage other states to adopt laws like connecticut, like maryland, so that we save lives of marylanders and then of all americans. >> maryland attorney general says since the law was passed, 800 people have a

young girls will be in danger. meantime donald trump says the decision should be left up to the states. >> the comments come after north carolina passed a bill requiring transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds with the sex listed on the birth certificate. after north carolina passed the bill several other states have created similar legislation. lawmakers are making sure dc business owners comply with gender neutral bathroom law. >> reporter: this regulation has been in place for ten years now, but under this program, the district government is asking for people to report if a business is not complying to this regulation. here's how it works. under the rules, a single-use bathroom in dc must be gender neutral. single use means for one person only. here is an example we found at a dc restaurant today. it has both female and male

access. safe bathrooms dc is a way to report places that are not compliant. the office of human rights takes some notification from the public and then sends the business an official warning letter and we're told today in most cases it is resolved right away. >> we send them a letter in the mail and say hey, within 30 days please change your signage and send us a picture of it and we'll close the case immediately. there's no fines, nothing like that. it's just to make sure they make the change. if for some reason a business either wants to refuse to make that change or if they don't respond to us, then we'll file a formal charge of discrimination against the business. >> reporter: the office of human rights says only a few times had they had to take it further than justish youing a letter. in most cases businesses don't realize they're noncompliant but when they do, they make the change right away. in northwest, matt ackland, fox 5 local news. >> a rare look inside prince's paisle

debt in his apartment. tonight he's behind bars. >> as we continue to mourn the death of pop icon prince, a medical examer has completed his autopsy. prince was found unresponsive yesterday inside of his minnesota home. he was 57 years old. and the tributes for prince are pouring in. so many people across the nation and the world with special memories of their favorite song, also their first prince concert. >> today we talked to one woman who like so many of you was stunned to hear the news and in situation like this, this is always a factor. we talked to a psychologist about the outpouring of sorrow. here is laura evans. >> reporter: there was simply no one like prince. eccentric, fiercely independent, a musical pioneer. his music touching millions and

spanning generations. sabrina was a teenager when she went to her first prince concert. it was the first memory that surfaced when she heard about prince's death on thursday. >> i've never been to a concert filled with such excitement. all the joy and happiness i thought back to that moment. i've been to many concerts but that is one concert that will always bring joy to my soul. >> reporter: psychologist doug says it's not only prince's enormous talent that's sparking the widespread reaction, it's about how he evolved as an artist so fearlessly and genuinely. >> i think what that stirs in people is the recognition that we all have untapped capacity, whether they're creative or aspects of our personality that we keep in check for one reason or another. and long to express and break free. each of us have thoughts

feelings and desires maybe i could do this or i could be more of that or i could try this. and you see somebody who represents doing that. it really, it touches you because it gives you a sense of hope. >> even president barack obama, who hosted prince as a guest at the white house last year said he and the first lady are joining millions of fans in mourns. the president released this statement. few artists have influenced sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly or touched quite so much people with their talent. a strong spirit transcends rules, prince once said, and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder or more reatetive. prince pe meant a lot of things to a lot of people. >> sunshine, joy, love, togetherness. he just loved life and he loved people. he loved mu

now seeing some of that ralph. some of you not seeing anything at all. it's going to become a little more widespread in the overnight hours. we are talking scattered showers and i can't rule out a pop-up thunderstorm or two. that is a possibility tonight that we could see a stray thunderstorm or so. so we're going to watch that closely for you. showers are going to ringer into the early part of saturday. then they're out of the picture so the weekend is not a wash-out. and the reminder of the weekend looks absolutely great. but by the time we get to monday you're going to think that it's summer actually because we've got some really changes in our temperatures coming along that's really going to warm up quite a bit. in the meantime let's deal with this wet weather. plenty of it, it's all associated with the low pressure system and an associated cold front. that is going to move across the mid atlantic tonight into tomorrow. so this is all ahead of that system. and as we get in just a l

here's that frontal system out to the west and as i said, we had the odd thunderstorm or two pop up, but there's been a little here just north of frederick earlier tonight. not much happening now but there are some heavier pockets of rainfall. so we're going to see that start to fill in a little bit more tonight. if you are going out at this hour at any time, just make sure that you grab your umbrella because you're going to need it. current temperatures, 66 at dc, 63 at gaithersburg this here. 64 at dulles, the same at cull pepper, 63 at hagerstown. overnight lows into the upper 50s and the mid 50s more to the north and to the west of us. but once again, it's going to be just kind of a wet night and the same thing for the first part of your saturday. so we're talking some morning showers so if you're going anywhere early
