right now at 10:00, a violent weekend in dc. a dozen shootings and stabbings within 48 hours. we've got the latest on the crime wave. >> scary moments on metro's red line. tonight new details about the weekend fire that led to the evacuation of hundreds of passengers. >> everyone familiar with the sweet treats inside these boxes. it's where these cookies are going that is really special. >> your news starts right now. >> and we thank you for joining us tonight. i'm tony perkins. >> and i'm sarah simmons in for shawn. off the top, a bloody and violent weekend across the district. >> police have been busy working a dozen stabbings and shootings. one attack turned deadly. fox 5's marina marraco is live at police headquarters following the investigations.

>> the summer is still a couple of months away but this weekend was a warm one and with it came a wave of violent that spanned through of the four quadrants. one of the stabbings turned out to be a fatality in this crime spree. but this all started on friday things getting off on a bad foot. three stabbings in northeast and a shooting across the river and on saturday things got even worse with five shootings again. the majority in northeast. and the weekend on sunday rounded out with another two shootings on the same side of the city. saturday night a 38-year-old man was stabbed to death and as the warm weather continues, community leaders fear that things are only going to get worse. >> it seems like we're in iraq, we're in a war zone in dc. that's sickening.

them, but i do think we need the jump house back out here. in order for this guns and violence to stop the way it's going. we need somebody out here, the atf, whoever. we need them back out here to patrol our neighborhoods, our communities. we need the community back out here. we're done the marching, we've done the social economics, we've done the go-go scenes. they've come out and have barbecues. that doesn't help them. that's not the message. i don't think that's the solution. and i really right now i'm so far gone i don't know what the solution is right now. because everything that we try is just not working. >> reporter: one more life taken the same time last year. marina marraco, fox 5 local news. >> also in the district, a student is stabbed on his way to school and the suspect is still

this happened around 9:00 a.m. just a block away from wilson high school. police say a man in his 30s tried to rob the 17-year-old at knife point. during a struggle the student was stabbed in the leg. the student made it to school as later treated tw nonlife threatening injuries. another student told us he's worried. >> i do feel a little bit concerned for my safety now that people were being robbed a couple of blocks of school, that's a concern to my safety. we're coming from like northwest dc and we have to park our cars somewhere and usually there's not enough spots in front of the schools to park. >> the suspect is described as a man in his 30s wearing all dark clothings. if you have information, police want to hear from you. >> police say an 18-year-old was attacked in

village overnight and later died at the hospital. fox 5's alexandra limon spoke with the victim's heartbroken family today. >> i don't want to believe that it's my son. confused why this had to happened to him. he was trying to change his life around. >> reporter: oscar was just 18 years old now police are investigating his murder trying to piece together what happened. the victim's family says he was the proud new dad of a baby girl. >> he has a daughter. smee's almost eight months now. he loved dearly and he would do anything for her. >> reporter: monday afternoon, dozens of evidence markers were scattered in the parking lot of the park. his family tells us he was stabbed to death. >> he was the only brother i

had. >> montgomery village residents looking to enjoy a nice day at the park with their kids were turned away monday as park police and montgomery county investigators continued to comb through and photograph evidence. >> it just seems like it's really too close to home. like this apark i bring my children to and it's scary to think this could have happened when we were here. >> police say two other people were hurt in this incident. they were both treated and released from the hospital. at this point police say they can the classify them as victims, suspects or witnesses. now to fairfax county where police are investigating what they say is a suspicious death. officers were called to the scene around 3:00 this afternoon. police say a woman found a man dead inside her home on the 5300 block of bedford terrace in al alexandria. the man and woman had a prior relationship. no word yet on a

motive. >> it has happened again smoke filled the cars of a metro train this weekend causing hundreds of people to be evacuated on the red line. the chaos was caught on a rider's cell phone. it happened saturday night at the friendship heights metro station. passengers say they couldn't get answers about what to do. metro's own board chairman said today the response in his words was panicky. metro's gm tells us he's aware of the passenger complaints and while everyone did evacuate safely, he is investigating to see if employees followed proper protocols. >> clearly for the people on the train, it's very stressful, i get it. but we have to basically get people back in the safe area as quickly as possible. you can't just start making decisions without knowing what you're making them. >> investigators are trying to determine the cause of saturday's smoke incident but ey

as a contributing factor. >> let's take it outside now. we had a beautiful start to the workweek here and another taste of the summer is on the way, but that could mean some more storms too. sue is here with what you need to know. >> not only will it feel like a summer day tomorrow, but we're going to have a noticeable itick in the humidity department and that could fuel some afternoon thunderstorms. we're thinking about our voters in maryland tomorrow. the best chance for thunderstorms may be across maryland later in the afternoon. not so much for the morning but we can't rule them out at any point. but yes it is going to be a brief summer preview. tonight so comfortable and our high temperatures 70s to near 80. still 69 degrees which is close to where our average high for the day should be. 70 in quantico, 75 in fredricksburg, 75 out toward the culpeper area too. so it's going to be mild overnight with winds outof

south continuing. you can see some of the warm temperatures down at raleigh, even chicago 76 degrees at this hour. something warm this way comes and we will have a toasty day tomorrow. notice the front we see up in pennsylvania. there's a possibility it could touch off rumbles of thunder. we're expecting a severe weather outbreak in the middle part of the country. follow that to the east coast and it's just a slight risk that we could see anything strong. the best chance of seeing anything strong would be up through the maryland area. in the short term what should you expect at the bus tomorrow top? the kids won't be dealing with jackets. temperatures between 59 and 67 in the morning. after school 82 to 88. feeling really hot. maybe a couple of thunderstorms beginning to bubble up at that point. but i think if we did see them in the afternoon, they would likely be far to the north. so we're going to watch all of that for you and keep

investigators found marijuana growing operations at three of the four crime scenes but it's unclear what if any role those pot farms had in friday's killings. the victims range from 16 to 44 years old. all of them were shot in the head execution style while sleeping. a 4-day-old baby, a six-month-old and a three-year-old survived. this was a well planned out murd e autopsies on the bodies were performed earlier today. it may be weeks before we learn the results. staying in ohio, cleave hand has reached a $6 million settlement over the death of tamir rice. the city will pay out $3 million this year and another $3 million next year. 12-year-old rice was shot and killed by a white police officer. police say he was playing with a pellet gun that resembled a hand gun and he refused to put his hands up. a federal civil rights investigation is still ongoing. >> now to a

linked to the national institutes of health. an assistant chief medical examiner in richmond says their office is selling brains zoe nated by the families of loved ones to nih. it's reported the organs have been sold for a total of $150,000. the assistant medical examiner leveled the accusations in a 20-minute youtube video. it alleges fraud, the sale of donated organs, incompetent pathologists and a bias toward law enforcement. >> after attempts to present this information to the constituents of virginia, other avenues, i've come to the realization it's something i'm going to have to do myself. everything in this presentation is true to the best of my knowledge and i would gladly swear to it under oath. >> nih confirms it receives brains from the medical examiner's office. they say the organs are obtained for research through a monthly contract

health. >> shoppers are planningd to boycott target over its transgender bathroom policy. this after a petition last week in response to saying transgender customers or employees can use the bathroom that corresponds with their identity. they warn it encourages sexual and pred dors and puts women and children in danger. in the district about a dozen protesters turned out for dc united's stadium breaking. the mayor says it will bring plenty of jobs and tax revenue. those against it fear there hasn't been enough investigation into the site to know if a broad demolition can be dangerous. >> any time you have construction, the city and all the developers, construction crews have to have an approved environmental plan and this site is

proceed with the utmost caution in making sure the site is cleaned up just like we did across the way at nations park. >> the city plans to spend up to $150 million on that project. a nine-year-old girl scout from montgomery county planned a sweet surprise. as she was selling cookies this year, she asked folks if they wanted to buy an extra box for officers. >> and many of them came through. yesterday elizabeth delivered dozens and dozens of boxes along with a handwritten note thanking them for keeping us safe. >> reporter: we're here at district 3, one of the montgomery police stations where elizabeth made a delivery. she left 60 boxes here, i can tell you there aren't too many cookies left inside tonight. this is one of those stories that just makes you happy to hear about. elizabeth says more people wanted to buy

than keep for themselves. >> girl scout cookies that i love to eat are thin mints i would say those are the best cookies. >> reporter: they're the kind of treats that sell themselves, but elizabeth still had a selling strategy. >> i would first say hi and i would smile all the way through it. >> for this girl scout, it's not all about making money. >> i thank them for everything that they do to like fixing all the crimes that people do. i heard that one station lost a police officer a couple of months ago. and i wanted them to smile again. >> reporter: she got about 250 cookie donations. and she delivered some over the weekend. along with letters. thank you for being brave and keeping us safe. >> they make the day go by a little bit easier. it makes

♪ we've got a thing going on >> well the music world is mourning another loss tonight. the soul singer known for the 1972 hit "me and mrs. jones" has died. he died at his home in new jersey. he was hospitalized last week after being diagnosed for pancreatic cancer. his career spanned more than 60

years. paul won a grammy for "me and mrs. jones" and he was also inducted into the philadelphia walk of fame in 2008. he was survived by his wife. he was 81 years old. >> we are learning more about the days leading up to prince's death. today an audio recording was released of a medical emergency he suffered six days before he was found dead at his home studio in minnesota. in the audio transmissions obtained by tmz, you can hear the pilot radioing to get his plane on the ground in moline, illinois. the controller was heard saying at one point cfr, which means certificate first responder, will be waiting.

>> according to reports plins was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. after the treatment prince's publicist said he was fine and home. an autopsy was performed friday. it could take weeks before we know the cause of death. prince's closest friends and family said their good-byes to the music legend on saturday during a private ceremony. the service was held at the late superstar's paisley park compound. his only sister tyka, musician sheila e., and larry graham were all there. prince's remains have been created. their final resting place will not be revealed to the public. >> the national museum of american history is putting one of prince's guitars on display starting tomorrow. the custom guitar was

here's something we usually don't see around here. a whale sighting in the chesapeake bay. >> it was all caught on camera. the video shows a 35-40 foot hump back whale breaching. a fishing party got a front row seat to the awesome site. the capital of the boat shot the video. we spoke to him today. >> somebody sighted a large flash in

started looking and we saw the whale jumping. >> we've had some people that did say it has happened before. >> it's not that uncommon. >> i don't know that we usually get video of it. >> no, really cool. hey sue, it's a gorgeous day out there. it has been. >> yeah it absolutely was and tony, doesn't that make you want to get out to the chesapeake bay? >> yes, it does. >> i was looking on the foundation site and they do occasionally mate in the chesapeake in the winter. what a treat for those boaters the other day on friday and hopefully the weather will get you out on the chesapeake over the next couple of days. although heads up we're going to have a hot tuesday and a slightly humid tuesday but we are also going to be tracking a few storms and a few of those could be strong tomorrow

maryland. second half of this week is looking a lot cooler. we want you to be ready for that. we're going to probably see about a 20-degree drop as cooler air is going to be sinking down and the direction of our wind will change we'll drop from 80s to 60s in about 24 hours. shower chances are going to stick around. we need that to happen. things have been on the dry side so we're going to have weak areas of low pressure riding along a stalled-outboundry that will down to our south. that will give us at least a chance several days this week of getting a little bit of rain. high temperatures today 70s to 80 degrees. a beautiful today and tomorrow we're going to warm it up. some of you will describe it as hot. i think there will be scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon but look at wednesday. in 24 hours we drop to 66 degrees and that's all because of this front that's going to be coming through tomorrow and the wind direction will change from the south to the northeast, brings in that

air and it will also bring in some showers, light showers and maybe even some drizzle wednesday and thursday this week. so gardeners are going to be happy about that. they've been looking for that rain and you won't have to do hopefully too much watering. right now it's 69 degrees here in the district but culpeper, fredricksburg you're still 74 degrees. you can open those windows just a little bit although you will let in a little tree pollen. some of the rain we see up through pennsylvania may start to watch out that pollen. that will likely stay to our north though it could get as close as hagerstown tomorrow morning. we can see a little snow on the edge of that northern frontal boundary. i wanted to show you that that front will be sinking through our area. weigh start out warm and introduce those showers as the front stalls to our south on wednesday. that's why we'll get a bit cooler and that will give us a chance for a little bit more rain in the forecast. 65 degrees tonight, we'll start with sunshine tomorrow so keep the

86 with a touch of humidity in the afternoon. winds out of the quest will help to fuel up scattered thunderstorms one or two of which can be strong. we're seeing up through pennsylvania by 8:00 in the morning maybe a little bit of that is getting closer to hagerstown. most of us stayed dry. noon hour a few scattered showers starting to pop up and yes there will even be some stronger storms down to our south. we'll be watching as another line begins to develop. not everybody sees rain tomorrow but as that line tries to get together with the frontal boundary, it could produce some stronger downpours. wednesday will introduce clouds and a few more showers developing in the afternoon. this is what you want to be ready for tomorrow. it could be as warm as 88 in fredricksburg, 89 for culpeper, 86 for dc. we wrap it up with your 7-day forecast.

white sweet corn and other vegetables. no illnesses have been reported but listeria could lead to serious z infections to young people and people with weakened immune systems. >> a new warning about those popular but dangerous laundry pods. poisoning from the packets are on the rise. it continues despite warnings and packaging changes. experts say more needs to be done. clark powell explains. >> reporter: soon after being introduced in the u.s. market, thousands of serious incidents involving children and laundry detergent packets. made them harder for children to open. but a new study shows during 2013 and 2014 there were more than 22,000 incidents in children younger than six. an increase of 17%. >> these children have come in in

breathing. we've even had two deaths in the last two years due to exposure to laundry packets. >> reporter: he looked at several types of detergents, both packets and traditional form. when children bite down on packets, they burst. they are associated with more serious medical outcomes, more hospitalizations, and more breathing failure than other types of detergents, as well as two child death the. >> those concentrated chemicals can cause serious burns. it gets down the lung and it can cause serious damage. it also when it's absorbed can cause effects on the brain. >> experts say parents of young children should avoid using laundry detergent packets all together. >> some of the manufacturers have moved to make containers less accessible to children. but what we found was in fact the number of exposures have

the league imposed the
