>> not happy at all. when we asked mayor bows beer it she pointed finger at the council. so matt ackland went to find several council members today to ask them about it, matt is in northwest with more. what did you find out? >> all i have is 50 cents in my hands, that won't be enough to park. it will cost 2.30 an hour. and whenever you raise fees in the city, well, there are a lot of people who simply don't like it, and it seems like that's been happening a lot in the district lately. so the mayor said blame it on the council. so went to the transportation committee, and they say there is a reason that they need to hike the fare. so let's show you those, we take you to the graphic now. so expecting six to $10 million a year to be raised with these extra feast, they see money is really needed because it will go straight to metro, to help and in funding all of those repairs. it will also encourage more turn-around for parking
5:29 pm
we're told that many people, especially downtown, they like to park for work, and then come out every hour or two, and feed the meter, and because it is so cheap, to feed the meter these days, that they are getting a cheaper price, instead of parking and garages. also, in some places, especially where the fare was 75 cents, some council members said simply too cheap to park, and they even compared it to other cities, who are charging a bit more. i want you to take a listen to what council member hey and council member evans, who rep areas with a loft parking meet hers to say today. >> there is no such thing as free parking, we want people to be able to park of course, for their errands, whatever they are doing, but it is not -- these are not meant to be parking spaces for your entire day at work. >> parking at the meters, staying all day, because it was so cheap. and downtown, if you want to go to macy's or restaurant, you could never get a spot. all taken all
5:30 pm
so we decided to find a rational number which 2.30 was. >> so decided to ask the council mel, what about the people metro in such trouble, some people saying i'm not riding metro, taking my car, what do you have to say. to those people, they said, listen, we don't want them parking on the street all day, there is still plenty of space and parking garages downtown, they didn't talk about how expensive they are. but they can be very expensive during the day. and when it comes to the business community, would you think that maybe they wouldn't want the price to be hikes at the meter, but, what they say is that they like this idea, the reason why, is because a lot of people will come to the meter, and then they'll be a lot of change. instead of parking all day, going up to the office, people will be able to come to meter pay hour or two and then another space that's open and then they can actually have more people coming through and using the businesses, and the area.
