about my experiences in vietnam. and so trying to explain it to t them i realized they probably pl weren't old enough to really appreciate the story so i decided to write down the t vignette of things i had done in day to day live over there and t leave it as a legacy for them to read. re >> anyone whose been through war often says it's something yout'g don't want to row live.ntrow you what ton forget it.on for i. was it hard for you to go backo and tell the story?d tell the s >> in the at all. >> really? >> not at all. >> why is that?s that? >> i was 21 when i was there.hee i wasn't drafted. dft i went because i volunteered. and it was another year in my life. li so i had bad experiences on his good experiences i made good gd friends even met some wonderfulr people. so i don't have a negativeegat reaction to the war.. >> okay. a lot of veterans coming back called the forgotten war. not having a very positiveposit experience, you know.ence, kn what was your -- when you return the what was your experience?xpc >> my experience was actuallyriw fairly positive because

getting out of the service at that time.e i came back. back. married me fiance' and went too germany still in the service tot a tank batallion so i was around military, you know, for severall years after i came back.k >> we're looking at these pickhp cheers and these are from yourmr personal pictures.peonal pictur. >> yes, yes. >> again, looking at them, t reliving these memories, it's i' hard to imagine it was not -- you know, it's not a tough storo to tell you.toell you. is there anyone thing in i particular that stands out forar you when you recount your timerm in service in vietnam? >> you know i think it wastas probably as much the comraderyry as anything else. els you know, the people there, the, air crews, the infantry we served with were really a fantastic group of individualsnd very dedicated and very brave.ea i think when i look back i look at that more than, you know, the unpleasant things.hng >> yeah.>> what about interaction with wit vietnamese wawa that like.t >> we had fair amount of interaction with the vietnamese being air

we often would be at the small s landing zones near villages.r the kids would come out and plad on the helicopters. kids love helicopters.icoprs the older folks would come out and trade cigarettes and smokens and do things like that.eha we chat empty.ha >> you went back to vietnam thit past fall.al was that for the first time? >> yes yes, it was. w >> was eight flood of memories?e >> not really, because most of the places i served with wereitw out in the field and they're not there any more really.ly i thought it was greatas g experience. it's a beautiful country . country the people are very pleasant. >> it is.. >> and so i very much enjoyed ey going back.going b i wanted to show it to my wife w and we had a good time.. >> so you wrote this your youngy relatives to explain what w happened.en what has been there reaction to the stories you've had to tell?l >> very positive.. very positive from my relatives and friends, and surprising aprn number of people who i served se when i have gotten in touch witw me since i publish this book.oo i've gotten e-mails and calls as from all over the world.e wld >> are they glad you're writingg it? >> absolutel
