>> right now at 10:00 a community is heartbroken. >> three high school juniors killed in a horrific crash just hours before their school's graduation ceremony. what could have led to the accident? plus a violent day across the district and northern virginia. gun violence claimed several lives. we're live with team coverage. >> and startling about the water you drink. lead is more prevalent in the area than you may think. "fox5 local news at 10" starts right now. >> and we thank you for joinin joininging us tonight. i'm tony perkins. >> and i'm shawn yancy. >> and it was a violent day across the region and in the district. and four people were shot and a car hit a police officer responding to a shooting in northeast. in alexandria the city's third homicide this year since schools into lock in mode after a

police found two people shot to death in homes. >> team coverage tonight. tisha lewis starts us off in northeast d.c., tisha. >> what we can tell you tonight there's surveillance video of the man that apparently opened gunfire at a busy intersection in northeast. police say they have that surveillance video and they are going to release it soon. for now, they have tweeted this picture. take a close look of screen shots from the surveillance video showing the man they described as a pen of interest. now, i did just speak with police. they say that the victims there are five victims that are in the hospital tonight that they say they are all conscious and breathing and expected to survive. it could have been much worse. >> this is the sound ever a street corner turned crime screen. sigh rensz police and traffic at stand still on the major routes into's out of the city

this is the face of the man police are calling a person of interest suspected of opening gunfire amid scores of people, commuters and rush hour traffic travb. the gunman was outside the liquor store and three by stan standers. >> what concerns do you have, if any, about your safety? >> i don't would worry about where i live. gun violence is everywhere no matter where you live. i try to be smart about where i'm going. >> her daily route passes big ben liquor store. >> i don't think more police is the answer. i think more education and striingter gun control laws are really the answer. >> i worry about the kids. the children i'm okay. >> tony flint has reason to worry today with a school a few blocks away. still he says the scene filled with crime tape, evidence markers and on-lookers is not

neighborhood. >> well it's not a bad community. and it's not -- overall. >> chief kathy linear says an officer responding to the scene was also hurt. >> when the sound of gun shots rang out we have an officer on mountain bike patrol a block away as comeing across north capitol to come up to the scene he's struck by a car. that car stayed on the scenech the officer is in good condition and has been transported and but right now his injuries are not serious. >> and again that officer we're told tonight is in good condition. as for the four victims. victim and three bystanders again we're told they're conscious and breathing and right now they're looking for a man with medium complexion 5' 6" tall and last seen wearing a black mask and black hood write and also a black adeed as jacket with blue jeans. if you have any information or the person you saw in the

the 1300 block of columbia road and we're told that that man is conscious and breathing and so far there's no word on what led to the shooting this apparently happened a short time ago. those are live pictures you're seeing from the scene. we do know no arrests have been made in this case as we get more information we will bring that to you. in northern virginia a shooting of a sheriff depcy is caught. 18-year-old joshua sumter shot a depcy and will be charged with attempted capital murder. the officer was responding to breaking and entering call knowledge of fredericksburg when he was shot. >> he sustained extensive injuries and they're serious but not life-threatening and he's stable and was treated at a local hospital and then we were just informed that surgery will likely be required.

deputy they say she was shot in the hip, thigh, arm and chest and say his body armor likely saved his life. >> a former montgomery county high school teacher is accused of sexually abusing students at chevy chase high school. he's accused of sexually abusing two female students. he took pictures of the students in class without their permission. . >> initial complaint came from 14-year-old and at the time she was not victim of the crime yet and he did not have an opportunity to take the photographs. she believed that was his intent and that started this investigation. an once the investigation began it was found he was engaged in this activity. >> anyone that feels that he my have been victimized should contact police. >> discovery of a boater that went missing on the potomac.

walk today. sky fox was over the scene of the great falls area last night where his body was pulled from the water 30 miles downstream from point of rocks where he and robert lee of frederick began fishing trip sunday. crews also recovered lee's body yesterday afternoon. >> the prince george country state attorney released video of a shooting victim who was unable to speak. instead, he had to blink to identify the shooter. germane hailz was found guilty in the murder every of melvin pate the shooting initially left pate paralyzed and five days after he was shot police say he responded to questions by blinking. and that helped identify hail as the shooter. the video was used during hail's trial despite controversy over whether it was a credible form of communication. pate died in 2012 due to complication from his injuries. >> justice in this case was delayed not denied and took many, many years and we were determined to bring justice

>> he was convicted of a number of charges including first degree murder and assault. he faces life in prison. >> they were great, amazing people. those are the words used to describe three montgomery county teenagers that died in a horrific car incident last night. >> clarksburg high school jup jurors were leaving a graduation party when the truck they were in cashdz on burst hill road. lauren i know this has been a tough day for the community. . >> this is a tough one friends and family devastated by the loss. the teens part of a very close close knit group of friends two played football. huge number of people came out tonight ape can see them lingering here behind me all coming out to preb these young men. >> i'm at a loss for

forecast shawn, tony. definitely cool tonight. cool start in the morning and very comfortable thursday on the way. and later this week we start warming up again. this say nice break. i think the humidity and biggest break that we've been getting and temperatures tonight really reflective of that. now i also have to mention that we had strong and gusty showers. they were not even thunderstorms and earlier across maryland trees and gust and many places with gusts of 40 and if you get trees down usually that means gusts of 30. and meanwhile, tonight, it's such a comfortable evening. 66 degrees and the good news is, those blustery wind died down now and 65 quantico and 59 west min ser and 59 baltimore it's gorgeous sleeping weather and get windows on tonight. we won't have too many nights like this as we go forward through the hot months. also wanted to mention those strong and gusty winds as i said over 40 miles an ho

places today relaxed quite a bit. they're still out of the northwest as you can see from the direction of arrows and while i think the breezes will pick ape little bit again on thursday it's not going to be till 40 miles an hour. that's good news. high pressure builds in breeze out of the northwest 15. maybe 20 occasionally and cool start for us tomorrow morning and as we look at lows overnight, 56 for district to maybe some mid 40s and upper 40s for places like martinsburg and hagerstown and at the bus stop tomorrow morning as well as what you can expect a fantastic looking thursday with a bit of a cool start in the morning. 54 to 60 and absolutely stunning after-school period.. 76 to 80. we warm it up a little bit and take breezes down a touch. but i know you want to hear about the weekend too. we made changes to that forecast. i'll share those for you in a little bit, shawn. >> looking forward to it. thank you, sue. >> and new at 10. lead levels in d.c. water supply have been a concern now for years. well, now, d. crk water

being more proactive by allowing customers access to new interactive tool a map that can tell you if the water pipes ruining into your house are made out of lead. sarah simmons is joining us to show you how it works, sarah. >> it's interesting here. it tells people d.c. residents what exactly that material is that's in their water pipes. just to show you here, this is kind of overview map here. what you can do is actually zoom in to sheet level and for the sake of speeding things up here i'll show you street-level where we zoomed in. what you can do you see the different dots. that's what shows you specifically what pipes are made up and what materials are in the pipes for each property. i'll click on this one a gra gray-colored -- gray color right here. hold on a second. there we go. and so it tells you the type of pipe. right there lead likely based on historic documentation. they're talking about public space and private side as property

and also lead. there's different ways you can look that up by typing in address or just going here and just clicking on the dots and it will give this information for you. some of these it will say co copper pipes. that's what usually grown ones here -- here we go that come up anyway you see what i'm saying here. where we're at northwest brandy whine street and chesapeake that area and we went to that area tonight and spoke to residents about the issue of lead in their pipes and new interactive map to get their take of the new service. >> i have not seen the map. but i think it's a fantastic idea. i have the postcard in the mail and i worry when that change to my water will occur. they give us warnings the water will turn brown and do things to protect ourselves and with interactive map we could see what's coming up. >> that's a good idea. i would love to see it. sooner the

>> all right. now just to get you back up to speed as to what you need to be looking for. signs of lead poisoning if you're concerned about this on juror cooen. you'll notice signs of developmental delay and learning difficultyes and inability and loss of appetite and weight loss. look for sluggishness and fatigue and abdominal pain and hearing loss there's a lot of signs to be looking for out. there now the district drinking water system dates back all the way to 1800s. you can understand why we have a mix of different pipes here. i wanted to show you as i pulled this up a bit ago while we're waiting this is a copper pipe. you see color coded here to what you find for each different address. and now if you like to figure out more about this map also if you would like free testing done on water d.c. water will do that for you as well. you can find out that information going to our web site foxdc.com back to you guys. >> very cool tool.

annandale. police say it stemmed from an argument between the suspect and his son-in-law. the argument escalate and his daughter became involved. police say the suspect fired shots and wounded both family members. they later died. the suspect as you see here was taken into custody. he is charged with two counts of second degree murder. we've reported on geneti geneticest testing that can reveal what mighting going on inside someone that could be contributing to depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions and this test asking even help identify the medications that person should be taking. >> a saliva swab can help pinpoint which treatment works best. laura evans works for a local man that says genetic testing saved his life. >> james crawford tried everything from therapy to a variety of anti-depressants. >> medication that felt

news". >> police busted 26 people connected to a howard county drug ring. detectives made arrests in columbia over the last 8 months. james matthews was supplying drugs and after they arrested him michael web took over drug operations. detectives tapped webs phone and wire tapped his phone which they said led him to other people in the organization and investigators seized more than a kilo of cocaine and four cars and 160,000 in cash. >> it as was a close call for a man in gaithersburg when a jeep crashed through his bay window. a woman in 20s somehow drove down embankment hit outdoor grill and drainpipe and ended up inside a unit at the london arie apartment on king gyms wa way. remarkably no one was hurt and 20 residents are displaced. >> i don't know. i don't know what i'll do. i want to be safe. i want to make sure they're safe. and so i totally don't know. thank goodness

>> i believe she's one of the displaced residents. there's no word yet on what let up to that crash. tonight friends, family and co-workers gathered to honor a retired d.c. firefighter william wetzel was a member of fire and ems department 35 years and today was his last day on the job during service he saw action at many major incidents including 34e79 gone 9/11 and tragic metro red line collision in 2009 he was one of the first rescuerss to reach trapped victims. he feels lucky to retire from the department. >> i think i've ridden my last run. i'm lucky. there was a lot of guys that didn't get to go home after their last run. and i want to say 7 or 8 guides since i've been on the job. i'm the lucky one. i get to go home now and enjoy my retirement. >> wetzel is third generation firefighter and his father became a d.c. firefighter in 1

the bear made way to the driving range from rock fern branch park they suspect this is the same bear spotted in the waverly area. authorities say do not approach a bear if you see one. instead call wild life officials. >> yep they say you should let him play through. >> remember the story. >> yes. there will be 40s north and west of town. but humidity stays nice and low again tomorrow. we'll have lots of sunshine and we will not have those 40 mile an hour wind gusts. maybe 10, 15, 20 from time to time but that feels better to you and it's looking like a great day and also a bit warmer than it was today. and those temperatures will stay low. humidity will also stay low. that will change a little bit as we get closer to the weeken weekend. we'll bring warmth back by the time we get to weekend and touch of humidity as well. enjoy this break and give the ac a rest and look for temperatures to top out upper 7 0s tomorrow. several degrees warmer than today which felt fall like to me. not spring like but fall like. hey by the time we get to thursday, friday you'll say we're getting paid back for what we didn't get in may. friday looks great too temperature of 80. too bad these aren't the weekend days. the weekend not looking bad either. we'll talk about that in a moment. these current temperatures around the region. definitely

cooler than that. 66 for the district not bad and as we get towards frederick down to 55. winchester down to 55. culpeper current temperatures 57 and check out some of the overnight lows. as chilly as 46 hagerstown and 50 call pep erin 52 as we look down towards mannasas and quanitco with gaithersburg coming in around 50 overnight. we'll keep those nice, clear skies with 40s north and west and winds have fwoten so much lighter they're out of the north west 10 miles an hour and overnight drop to 5 to 10. tomorrow looks for winds generally out west 10 to 15 and occasionally gust higher than that up to 20 miles an hour and 78 degrees you won't have to deal with crazy downpours that you had to north central maryland one last piece of energy that came through earlier today and now we settle in and let my pressure do the thing to give us sunshine filled day even if it is breezy and not bad and not windy like today. 8

z.c. and dulles 80 and martin martinsburg and hagerstown 78 with winchester coming in 79. high pressure has a lot to do with wind settling down and lovely conditions will be experiencing and that will go as you know through friday. what about the weekend? how are things looking there? we have isolated thunderstorms now expected, saturday is not looking like a very wet day. it's going to warm up. it will be unsettled with humidity creeping back in. we can't rule out a few thunderstorms and not looking like wet day. looks good. and maybe a morning shower left from evening activity saturday. but we'll get breaking out for much more sunshine as we get to the afternoon. 88 on saturday. sunday 87 degrees and looking like a pretty good weekend all things together. that high pressure which will get off the coast will start pumping in more southerly wind. that's why we pump temperatures up. we'll be close to 90 when we get to sunday and it's the first time we've done
