we're going to begin with joel waldman in orlando. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. at this hour, there are dozens, literally dozens of crime scene reconstructionists on scene. the club just behind me left shoulder about a block or two down, obviously. the street is still blocked off as investigators are scouring the area, looking for any evidence, i know you'll have a reporter getting into a lot of detail about what james comey fbi director had to say, but in a quick nutshell, they found electronic evidence, they also say that omar mateen had traveled to saudi arabia at least two different times and of course, we know by now, that within pulse night club, he had called 911 at least two different times, then there was a call back, and during one of those phone calls, a third one, when it was a reverse call from 911, he did, in fact, pledge

referred to the boston marathon bombers as, quote, unquote, home boys, the tsarnaev brothers. the hearts and minds of the people of orlando are on the victims here. the number of fatalities downgraded today to 49 from 50, because the 50th fatality was the gunman and as of yesterday, they were including that total as a victims' total. the 50th person is in fact, the gunman. now, 43 of the 53 wounded remain in the hospital. we hear that at least six are undergoing operations today on monday, pretty much two days after this shooting occurred or day and a half or so. and some are said to be in grave condition. authorities warning not to be surprised if the fatality list climbs. >> i want to ask you about omar mateen's father who

spoken out. what have you able to undercover about him, about what he has said in terms of his allegiance to the taliban and what role he may have played in the lead-up to this? talking to his son. i know he talked to him hours before this shooting happened. what do you know about him. >> reporter: that's a great question, his name is saddiqui mean born in afghanistan and omar was born in new york, and they resided here in florida about 90 miles or so south of orlando in port saints lucy but the father posted a video in his native tongue today on facebook. he basically acted confused as to how this could happen. he says he's well educated, very well mannered, very respectful. his father saying that if he knew one percent of what was going on, he would have contacted author

he also said that he had a wife, which we know about, but the wife came out yesterday and basically said this guy was very abusive, that omar mateen was abusive and physically and verbally assaulted her numerous occasions. the father saying it was a design marriage and he had a child and everything to live for. >> a lot of interesting information. joel waldman thank you so much. tonight in washington, the head of the fbi is defending the bureau's prior investigation of the orlando shooter. director james comey can disclosed details of three interviews the fbi had with omar mateen in recent years prior to his shooting. president obama was briefed about yesterday's shooting and spoke to reporters. >> we can say this is being treated as a terrorist investigation. it appears that the shooter was inspired by

information that was disseminated over the internet. >> fox 5 tom fitzgerald is continuing team coverage of the orlando shooting. he's live at fbi to headquarters. they refused to say mateen's name today. >> reporter: that is correct. director james comey said he would only river to mateen as the killer because he didn't want to encourage fame and glory. fbi disclosed they had interviewed omar mateen over the course of three times spanning 2013 and 2014 in regard to islamic extremist. however, they closed that case after determining they were no longer concern about him. we want you to hear what he had to say today. the fbi director here a headquarters defending the actions of fbi agents saying that he thought they acted properly. within the same moment,

that he would look into this case to see if anything could have been done differently. >> the honest answer is, i don't think so. . i don't see anything in reviewing our work that our agents should have done differently, but we'll look at it in an open and honest way and be transparent about it. our investigation involved introducing confidential sources to him, recording conversations with him, following him, reviewing tractional records from his communications and searching government holdings for any possible connections, derogatory information. >> reporter: comey says they first began investigating him back in may of 2013. that's when they saw something, said something and contacted the fbi. they were concerned. mateen had been bragging about his family being connected to islamic groups. the fbi says after two interviews with him they determine that he was no ba

for mateen's pleads. however, in 2014, mateen was interviewed again by fbi. this time investigating possible connections to a suicide bomber in syria when someone had identified mateen as a person who could have been radicaled, however, after that interview, agents again determine he was not a threat. former c ia tells fox 5 he is concerned about how omar mateen case was handled. he says the president and the fbi director said that mateen was radicalized and a loan wolf but the administration is still reluctant to actually discuss what he was self radicalized as. that is extremist islamic ideology. >> it has gotten ridiculous, the degree to which political correctness and lack of preciseness and specificity has infected

it's amazing. >>reporter: adding to the confusion, the fbi director said today that it is still not clear exactly which group mateen pledged allegiance to, even though he was on the phone with a 911 operator pledging allegiance to isis, his former claims of being in solidarity with the boston marathon bombers and that syrian bomber are all groups they were not connected to isis. of director james comey says there is still confusion about what mateen thought he was fighting for. will you have at fbi headquarters tom fitzgerald fox 5 local news. the victims of the orlando shooting were remembered today on the steps of the u.s. capitol. lgbt and muslim congressional staff associations held a vigil and paused for a moment of silence to honor the victims a short time ago. paul wagner continues our team coverage live at the dc police station. how is local

responding to all of this tonight? >> reporter: well, we met with chief out here at the sixth district a little while ago ago and talked to her at length about security in the city. she said she got a call about 6:00 yesterday morning, where she was told what was happening in orlando, and at that moment, she decided to get on the phone 10 start moving resources around. she says she brought in additional resources into the city from her special operations division. she says those resources are in place today and they will be tomorrow. first give you the robs that we got today from dc mayor bowser. we caught up with her after that to get her reaction to what had happened in orlando. here's the mayor. >> most americans woke up yesterday morning in shock and mad quite frankly that we are having yet another violent attack on americans because of deadly

that is what really has my attention, that we have to, in this country, face up to at the fact that assault rifles are only meant to devastate human beings, and we have to do something about it. >> reporter: now, the attack at pulse night club in orlando raises questions about security here in dc where there is a large lgbt community, a town night club on 8th street northwest, the owners told in his an e-mail, they employ a large uniform staff stationed throughout the club, which is supported by a sophisticated camera system and multiple uniformed dc police officers working out front. noting that many in the gay community go to these clubs where they can be themselves and feel safe. the dc night life and hospital association recently co sponsored a terrorism security briefing for local establishments with dc police homeland security and the fbi. late this afternoon, dc police chief told reporters

night life zones in 2012. specifically, to keep an eye on the clubs that could be targets for terrorism or other violence. here's what the chief had to say about those zones just a short while ago. >> the creation of the night life establishment, the units we put together and the specialized training we give them is bet practice for most big cities around the country. we're is that righting to see other cities starting to also create these night life units. but they're specially trained just to deal with that environment. everything that could go along with that environment. >> reporter: the chief says she is keeping her ear on what's going on in orlando and said she could change her security measures at any time hour to hour. live in northeast paul wagner, fox 5 local news. in light of the orlando shooting, americans are looking to the presidential candidates now more than ever to learn how they might respond to this type of attack. also, americans want to know how the candidates

. skyfox over the scene of a massive house fire in potomac today. they broke out around 2:00 this afternoon. montgomery county fire officials say no one was home at the time. took about 65 firefighters to distinguish the fire. fire marshals believe it started in the garage no word yet on what sparked the fire. a montgomery county police officer is behind bars after getting caught up in an on line sex sting. >> we're getting a better sense of how often a

being forced to go undercover to keep your kids safe online. fox 5 jim lokay is here with the details. >> reporter: these things happen more and more often. with good reason. police in prince william county where this happened say it's a combination of parents not keeping a closer eye on their kids on line and would be criminals taking advantage. this is the officer, christopher dunkas has been on force less than two years, he answered a post it add by a 15-year-old girl but it was actually a prince william county police officer. he met up in a target park the lot to make the arrest. >> it wasn't any sort of incident or anything like that. we routinely do these types of operations to see. we hope sometimes we conduct these operations and we don't get anything from it. that's our goal is actually have no one doing a sort of deviant.

that's not the age we live in. >> reporter: he added if they do a sting and make one arrest, they're still doing the job. he's suspended without pay pending investigation, he's charged with using a communications device to facilitate offenses with juveniles. of others men from virginia ranging in april ages from 20 oh 58 j. >> the 22-year-old was shot and killed friday night while she was signing autographs following her concert in orlando. the gunman, this man, later took his own life. friends and family will gather for a candle light is vigil in evesham. she was a i tube star and a contestant on the voice. she apparently had no personal connection to the man who shot her. . a federal appeals court overturned a jury's decision to award jesse venture. the

ghost busters. now bill murray will be this year's recipient of the mark twain prize for american humor. he's one of several saturday night alums who have received the prize, it will be handed out at the kennedy sunnier october. major move for apple at siri is getting an upgrade. the digital assistant will now be available for the make. apple says siri will make a lot of simple actions easier like adding things to your calendar. siri will be working with apes made by other companies and it will be a compatible with apple tv as well allowing you to launch live tv with voice commands. apple says they expect siri will be available for macs by this fall. they plan to make apple music more user friendly and introduce a cool feature for i messages where you can change the size of text bubbles to convey yo

gunman who killed 49 people before he was shot dead by police. tonight, the feds are portraying the killer as an apparent home grown et cetera. . fox lloyd is live in orlando with more. what can you tell us about the scene right now? >> reporter: the scene right now is still active here in orlando and the day after the worst day in the history of orlando, florida, the grim task of identifying the dead as the investigation continues here. new revelations from the fbi today that they had surveillance of omar mateen, the killer, a couple of years ago. they surveilled him for some ten months and interviewed him a couple times but they did not find evidence that he was a terrorist at that time. they say they are questioning other people that may have been involved here but so far, nobody else has been named. and they say there's no imminent danger right now of any other threats here in the area in orlando today. sarah. >> any other news, perhaps on the motive? seems to b

place, the possibilities. of what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: the fbi said that in the past, omar mateen apparently had run-ins with coworkers and he thought they were -- they didn't like him because he was muslim. he told the fbi that he told them he was related to al qaida, that he had ties to -- because he was angry he told the fbi. he became radicaled against america. they believe on the internet and became angry at the united states and everything we stood for. of course, we heard those reports that his father said he saw two gay men kissing in miami recently, and that made him very angry and perhaps set off the shooting spree that killed 49 here. >> lloyd sowers thank you so much. a lot of questions to be answered. we appreciate your insight. even for adults t

hard to wrap your head around what happened in orlando. how do you explain the horror to a child and should you? i received this e-mail from my children's elementary school today saying that there would be no formal discussion at school of the horrific event that took place this weekend. they say we are sure that each family will handle any such conversation at home in a way that suits your children's needs. end quote. experts say if you think your child will learn about it from friends, it's best for parents to act first and telling their children so they get the most facts and so that parents can convey the emotional tone. we invited psychologist doug to join us in studio i asked him how old should a child be. >> i think it's not so much the age, per se, but what you sense the child that any age is capable to absorb and understand. so you want to taylor what you communicate to the l

child. what the child is able to respond to and grasp in terms of their developmental level. >> how do you open that discussion with, let me tell you what's going on? do you want to ask me questions? do you let them watch the news. >> a little bit of all of that. you want to allow them to be aware of what's happened, what the reality is. also in the context of providing a sense of security, of protection, that this is not something that is throughout the world every day in their lives to be terry fied of. there are dangerous out there but they also have family and protection from institutions so on that can provide guidance and protection. but you want them to convey to you what they fear, what they experience. the worse thing is to try to stiffle that or tell the child there's nothing to worry about, everything is fine when they know it's not when they

things and see things. you want to encourage them to express fears and you can use the fears to help them rain them in and give a sense of security of their family and victim of a crime. >> along those lines, how ok is it for a parent to express their own fears? i know a child can often take an emotional queue from a parent. how -- how much of your, and your anxiety do you express. >> i think you want to express something that's real but also taylor it so that the child can absorb. for a 6-year-old that might be different from a 13-year-old. it's i think good and healthy to say, yes, something like that is very scary. very terrifying, and we need to understand how and why these things happen. that's where, in some cases you can get into the issue of that. there's some people who are mentally very troubled. that leads to them doing very bad things. that's a part of reality. again, we have

people help. we have responses to bad things that do happen. again, you're providing some assurance but getting them tuned into the larger reality the culture and world. >> to that point, you talked about too not allowing there to be a growth of fear of a culture, growth of fear of a mental illness or a religion. >> absolutely. two aspects both important. one is to not create the idea that people that have mental or emotional troubles are violent. most are not. people have all kinds of emotional problems since even serious mental illness, but they're not violent. most of them are not. on the other hand, to target or label certain kinds of individuals, because of their religion, their sexual orientation, how they're different from you and
