there was outright terror on the streets of dallas, protesters running for their lives, police trying to get a handle on what was happening after a series of gunshots. images would emerge of what appeared to be a gunman using pillars of a building for cover. eventually, five police officers were killed several other wounded. >> we are heart broken. >> the dallas police chief confirmed that one suspect was killed, by an explosive device, the police use after an extended stands off, but not before the gunman spoke to a police negotiator. >> he wanted to kill officers. and he expressed killing white people. he expressed killing white officers. he expressed anger for black lives matter. >> early this morning, president obama emerged after traveling to poland to speak about the violence. >> we are horrified over these events and that we can unite with people, and the police department in dallas.

mirrored similar events around the country, including outside the nation's capitol. all in response to police shootings in recent days caught on camera in louisianna and minnesota. as dallas police continue to investigate tonight, the police chief said the devisive necessary must stop. >> we don't feel much support most days let's not make today most days. >> learning more about the shoot here carried out the deadly attack in dallas, a friend of micah xavier johnson told the associated press he didn't see this coming. said johnson was well educated and wasn't really political. said he saw johnson about a week ago, and said that johnson was not a violent man. he was 25, grew up in the dallas suburb of mosk. te, had one tour of duty in afghanistan, he worked as a carpenter, and builder, during his army service wh

>> i think the rain put damper on this little bit, don't have the crowds out here we expect. >> told me police really hasn't changed that much over the years, but the atmosphere certainly has. >> dc police officers we talked to today on the phone, in the street, and on social media, all had similar reactions to what happened in dallas. their hearts are heavy, but the work goes on. >> after hearing what was going on last night, obviously, it is a painful time for the law enforcement community around the country. here in d.c., no different. you know, our officers, obviously, follow the news, and see what's going on, you know, they have their concerns, as well. >> many officers we spoke with said they feel like they've become targets, which makes things difficult for their loved ones at home. >> what struck me the most is my family. every day i get up, every day all every us get up, we come to work, and we d'

times. we just come here, do our job, we answer the radio, do what we got to do one at a time. our families home suffering, today, i must have gotten telephone calls from family or friends, are you doing okay, are you all right, keep your head up, you know, we support you. and that's the nice part. but at the end of the day, families are the ones that really suffer. >> at the memorial today, people left messages, notes, and flowers for the officers in dallas. while on the street, we could see dc police officers going about their duties, just like they do every day. but in the age of social media, officers feel they're always being second guessed, and that citizens want answers now, no waiting. tell us what happened now. >> giving too much power, too much own us to the one or 2% of the people that are saying we're bad, police offers remembers not doing their job

painted, they're interacting with the cops, listening to the music that's going on. live in northeast, paul wagner, fox5 local news. district leaders say they're heart broken over what had taken place in dallas this afternoon dc mayor mural bowser and police chief cathy lanier laid a wreath at the law enforcement memorial in northwest. that memorial honors the 20,000 law enforcement officers who had died in the line of duty over the years. the five police deaths in dallas bridges to 26 the number of officers killed so far this year. that's a 44% increase over last year. many people are talking about the violence, that has erupt in the week in minnisota, louisianna, now texas, and some are leaving detailed opinionated messages on social media. >> all over social media. and others are speaking with their co-workers and their neighbors, one place that is attracting many people to discussions today is right out in front of the museum in northwest dc. fox5's matt ackland joins us live from there with more,

matt? >> reporter: hi, laura, sarah, this definitely is a nationwide conversation, everyone is talking about it, you can see it right here in front of the museum. as you well know, these are the front page papers from all over the country. now i just want to gave you a look at what is being shown here. this is from the dallas morning news. this picture hereof this officer hugging a woman is an ap picture that we've seen on so many of the front pages, and then right over here, this is another heart breaking picture of the shooting victim and minnesota. today, earlier, if we can take you to video, you can see people gathered here all day, many folks were having a conversation as they looked at the headlines, red some of the articles here. everyone is really feeling the pain from the last week. and here is what some of them had to say to us earlier today. take a listen. >> it is actually horrible. there is no words to

it. >> everybody seems to feeling horrified across the nation, almost unified response to all of the incidents that have happened in the last few days, you know, not only the dallas shooting last night, but baton rouge, minnesota, everybody just outraged by it. it seems like it is something across the nation we're seeing the same reaction at what point do we come together to deal with it? >> reporter: so many people once again talking about the violence this last week, and people from far away, those ladies, one of them, the mother, was from washington state. just want to give you an idea, you are all here, you didn't know i was going to come up to you, but how are you feeling about the tragedies this week? >> it is really sad. >> yes? >> yes, did you come and look at some of the headlines yourself? >> yes, we were here this morning, crazy to see all of the defendant rent papers had everything about the dallas news. >> where are you from? >> sacramento, california.

so that's the latest, laura, all day long people have been gathering here and then as you know just couple of blocks away from here, about two blocks, this way, is the law enforcement national memorial. the people have been gathering there, as well. live in the district, matt ackland, fox5 local news. >> right now protesters with black lives matter are gathering in front of the justice department. >> it is one of several protests planned for tonight and this weekend. fox5's lindsay watts is thereto give us a look, lindsay? >> reporter: sarah, laura, right now almost as many police officers here as protesters. supposed to start at 5:00. people are just really starting to get here. when this does get underway, it certainly will be very secure, you can see all of the officers lined up behind me, in front of the department of justice. over here, the squad cars stretched down the block, i think there is about ten of them park here. and then just on the sidewalk there you can see

protesters, that have really, that group is only a handful of people, has grown in just the last minute or two. i'm here now with one of the very first people to arrive. this is gabriela, telling me you came in from prince george's county. why did you want to be here? >> well, i think mainly why i want to be here because triple minority, african-american, hispanic, i'm woman. i stands for black lives and black lives matter, not just a protest march but also a movement, and to show people can co-exist, come together, stand for what they believe in. and also to show that like we stand with what happened to the police officers and their families, like there is no like one side, like we all come together and just be here in unity. >> right. i think that's an important point, on media and tv. you don't have to pick a side. you can only be pro black lives or pro-police. you can be equally outraged with the violence that we've seen in minnesota, louisianna, as well as in dall a. >> yes it, doesn't have to be a war on black america or war on police.

the violence is definitely a disappointing factor in it. fighting fire with fire will only create a bigger fire. definitely just being here, just standing, you know, with the people and come together and just support black lives. >> you were at the protest last night in d.c. >> yes. >> at the same time that that massacre was going on in dallas. what were you feeling when you heard about that? >> well, the protest had a lot of excitement, entheusiasm, so many people, there the congress, the congressmen came out and spoke. it was definitely very empowering, but the thing about these protests is that like they have so much power and entheusiasm, but they lost a goal or lack a purpose. they were speaking to us, like we support you, we support black lives, but we didn't have anything to present to them. then when i heard this news about the police officers, i was shocked. and i was almost like, wow, like this is shock being, but at the same time surprised. there is so much going on, it is such a hype going on, like there is so much violence, and there is just a lot of also a lot of talk. not a lot of walk. so it was definitely

but guess what? not like i need to tell you. >> no, we're in the middle that far heatwave. again tal bert standing by to give us the latest on beautiful picture. >> yes, it is beautiful. we'll say that, but definitely beach weather, that's for sure. >> you know what, we've actually been dodging the bullet in some of our neighborhoods, you know we've had some storms in the forecast, and not quite as widespread as we had anticipated, however, we see the sun heating back up. let's take a look at radar, show you where things are right now as far as all of the active weather is concerned. now, we haven't had any watches or warnings for our immediate viewing area, but if you take a look, well to the southwest of us where the watches are. seeing activity with a lot of the rain and some of the storms moving their way through as they head off to the east, here is a closer look at radar for you. and you can see, actually now moving their way across the bay, and that's where they're seeing a lot of lightning, now, there was a lot of ground to cloud lightning hitting annapolis little earlier, areas right through along th

shore, now things have casino of moved little more toward the south and across the chesapeake bay, and that's where we have marine warnings in effect right now as these head to the east, at about 25 miles an hour. i can't see things won't fire up, so we have to watch it. as least until sunset, that's when things will start to calm down. now, still under slight risk for severe weather by the storm prediction center, that hasn't changed at all. temperatures well, yes, hot one, right now those temperatures are still into the 80s and the 90's. the rain has helped to cool things down little bit. so humidity not quite as bad. 80 degrees right now at dc. we've got 81 degrees at baltimore. 90 degrees at manassas, 86 degrees as far as dullos is concerned. so for tonight, overnight low, 77 degrees, partly cloudy, we'll see the storm starting to decrease once we get rid of the sun, at least, when sunset occurs, that's at least a good

improvement. winds to the west five to 10 miles per hour moving into the overnight hours. we have fireworks to talk about, in gaithersburg, rescheduled for tonight, hitting at about 9:00 tonight, and at that pointy do anticipate that things will be fine for those fireworks. so, everybody can just get out and just enjoy them accordingly. more details on what you can expect on that seven day forecast, coming up in just a bit, back to you. >> learning about another police ache bush that happened in george a man called 911 to report a car break-in around 8:00 this morning. >> when that officer arrived at the scene, the man started shooting at the officer. a shoot-out errupted between the two of them, the officer, the suspect, both wounded. they were both taken to the hospital for treatment. we're told both are expected to survive. it is unclear what the motive may have been for the shooting. charges are pending now against the gunman. >> now, to tennessee, where one person is dead and three other including a police officer are wounded, after a man fired sh

cars on the highway. the suspect told police he was targeting police officers and other because he was troubled by incidents involving black people and law enforcement officers. investigators say the suspect is black, and the victims were all white. the suspect was shot by the officers and is now being treated at a hospital. he has not yet been charged. >> the ambush in dallas is sending shock waves around the country. >> nations top law enforcement officials, attorney general, loretta lynch, calls for calm. house speaker paul ryan also addressed the shooting today. >> after the event of this week, americans across our country are feeling a sense of helpless necessary of uncertainty, and of fear. now, these feelings are understandable, and they're justified. but the answer must not be violence. >> there is no cause or context in which this violence, this kind of terror, is justified, none

>> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. in north virginia, a man was arrested today on terrorism charges. a federal affidavit says he took photos of dc in arlington landmarks, he thought, would be good target for isil attacks. >> alex and will will no, ma'am joint us with details on the charges for which is harrass kamar appeared in court today. alex, tell us about this. >> first, let me go over numbers extremely concerning. u.s. attorney's office tells me over the past two years, ten people have been arrested, in northern virginia on terrorism charges related to isis alone. seven happened over the past year or so. now, the latest arrests, just this morning, 25 year

kamar taken into custody a periods in court in the afternoon. i'll tell you none of his family members were at the federal courthouse, in fact, court documents show kamar attempt topped travel to join isis in 2014, but his parents took his passport and threat toned call authorities. then the federal affidavit shows that in 2015, qamar worked with someone he thought was fellow isis supporter, but it was actually an fbi i am form and the who took video and audio recordings of their conversations. qamar accused of taking photos of landmarks in the dc and arlington areas that he believed would be good targets for terrorist attacks. he thought the photos would be used in a isis propaganda video to inspire lone wolf attacks, documents also show qamar allegedly operated over 60, twitter handles. variations of the handle, new era jihad

the heals of some of the other events that have happened, people are -- people are on edge right now. so it is a very unfortunate people's house gets locked down under a circumstance lie we had today. >> police say the capitol was placed on lockdown to keep everyone safe. one official say the so-called suspicious item turned out to be a power drill. learning more now about some of the victims after deadly ambush in dallas last night. >> dallas area rapid transit released a statement this morning announcing 43 year old police officer brent thompson had been killed in the ambush. this is a picture of him. he is the first officer killed in the line of duty since dart formed a police department back in 1989. he became a member of the force in 2009. dart also reported that there are three other officers injured in the shooting are expected to recover. >> and family members have identified this woman, shatamia

said she was shot in the back and calf as she shielded one of her sons from a bullet. she was returned to the hospital, her surgery, and is expected to survive. according to her sister, ms. taylor was alert whether taken into surgery, and was most concerned about the lives of the officers impacted by the shooting. supporters of black lives matter movement are condemning the police shootings in dallas. they say the dallas attack was the actions of a loan gunman, and their movement should not be tarnished, because of what happened. they say violence is not the answer here. instead, they want the community leaders to work together to end the unnecessary police shootings that have taken the list of many african-american men and women. one of the police involved shootings happened in minnesota this week, as you know, and today the saint anthony police department named the officer involved in the deadly shooting of philando castile, officer's name geronimo, he and fellow officer pulled overcast teal for a broken tail

castile told the officer that he had a gun on him, and was reaching to get his drivers license, not his gun. that is when allegedly opened fire. mother of alton sterling meanwhile speaking out about the shootings in dallas. sterling was shot and killed by a police officer as you know in louisianna earlier this week. ms. mcmillan issued a statement saying we reject the reprehensible acts of violence perpetrated against members of the dallas police department. she went on to say: our hearts break for the families of the officers who were lost as they protected protesters and residents alike during a rally. >> coming up tonight: social media companies in the hot seat. what google posted on its twitter page that has some companies, some calling the company bias. >> and mark zuckerberg addresses the graphic facebook live stream from minnesota. plus snap chat sued for exposing kids

>> the humidity dropped since the rain came through. >> little improvement on the way for you, ladies, not all bad throughout the course of this weekends, at least you'll know. that will but take a look at what happens happening now. we had watches and warnings, not for our immediate area at all. well to the south and to the southwest of us. so we really haven't had as

anticipated today. and all comes with the daytime heating and just how much instability builds in right now we did see few more breaks out there, so still keeping close eye, but, you can see, most of the activity for us has moved it way pretty much to the east, and over the bay right now. with where they're seeing most of this, in terms of some lightning, and some rainfall. there has been some areas of heavier rainfall in this. and a lot of cloud to ground lightning specially earlier today. right now as you can see most of it well to the south, not whole lot happening here at all. so still bears watching. and we still have the slight risk so we'll keep an eye on that for you. few storms possible, mostly dry, already seen that, i can't rule out maybe one, two firing up once again, before we head into sunset. the heat and humidity will continue at the beginning of saturday, then we start to see some of that improvement build in, and it won't be quite as sticky for you. a break from the heat by sunday, that's the thumbs-up day where we won't have to

another heatwave next week. so get ready, going to be just in the middle of what summer weather is all b here is a look at your current temperatures, 08 degrees in the nation's capitol, 09 at manassas, 86 gaithersburg, 81 at baltimore, martinsburg, cumberland, frederick, winchester, 91 at culpeper, and 91 degrees was our high today, officially, and even with the humidity building in, the dew points, with that rain, have really made a big difference to kind of keep it cooler and not quais as sticky. take a look if you dew points, so it actually into the 70s, which are quite as high as they have been. not quite as oppressive. we'll get little bit of nice westerly flow behind the system bringing up the storms. so we're still under slight risk of severe weather however. and as i said, there has still been little bit of instability out there. i can't rule out that we won't get maybe another pop up storm or two. so, just keeping close eye on the radar for you. well, we've got this frontal system moving through. this cold front. it is coming in as hot, humid,

sticky atmosphere, so ahead of this frontal system we're seeing all of the activity for tonight, but that's going to move through once we get into tomorrow. and on the back side of it, we will get some cooler, drier air. once we get into tomorrow though, we've got another little piece of energy to keep an eye on. i can't rule out tomorrow we won't see maybe isolated storm. here is a look at what's happening with the fireworks in gaithersburg tonight, by 9:00 i think things will be fine, so be able to get out and enjoy it, and just enjoy what you didn't get to enjoy for the fourth. so, as we move into tomorrow, we will see this frontal system move through. then as i said on the back side, nice westerly flow, ridge of high pressure builds in for sunday. once we get into tomorrow, we are under a marginal risk right here in this area shaded in green mainly to the east and maybe seeing storm or two pop up. here is a look at your full forecast for you for tomorrow. 87 degrees, by the 11:00 hour, keeping an eye to the skies by 3:00. and by 7:00 it looks good. 77 degrees for tonight then. partly cloudy skies. and for tomorrow, we are
