day up here on capital hill. earlier this morning at about ao 10:00 there was an evacuation of the house office building, thete ford house office buildingldin because of what was believed toe have been a suspicious device found in the basement. investigators located a bag with a device inside, electrical tapc and matches. that went on for two hours allll day, finally the all clear was given on that. first we heard that the capital visors went on lock down. that extended to the rest of the complex. other congress men tweeted thatm they were inside the houseouse chamber while all of this was of going on. we are right here on the west t lawn of the capital. a lot of the the activity that we have heard and the police vehicle also and the emergency vehicle also we've seen have been directly adjacent to us, behind where the department of p labor is and that would be on d and first street. i would say

probably two blocks away from aa where we are right now. back to you. >> thank you for the update. also in the district right now,, one man is under arrest after an intense gun battle and stand off with police in southeast. this began early this morning just after midnight when police interrupted a robbery inn progress in a parking lot behini an elementary school.y shots were exchanged and thehe suspect attempted to get away.wy paul wagner joins us life fromrm northwest with the story. paul. >>reporter: hi, ladies, outside the wilson building where chieff lanier was with the mayor earlier today and the chief gave us an update on the situationth and what happened down there behind the martin luther king junior school on southeast just off of alabama avenue. what appeared at the time was a very, very con fusing scene and possibly what may appeared initially as a possible ambush on police officers but that turned out not to be the

what chief lanier said today is that they were initially alerted to gunfire behind the school by shots fired.sh that's the computer program that is connected to mike phones alln around the city and it picks up the sound of gunfire. so the officers get behind the school and chief lanier says they found man who just committed a robbery and who wass desperate to get away. this is the suv the gunman triem to car jack after committing the robbery, the bullet who else apparently from police gunfire stricting the body of the carcar and the windshield. the gunman was able to get inside the suv which was occupied by several other people and fired at police from there pitting officers down. for about 30 minutes there was s stand off as police attempted to get gunman and his apparent hostages out of the vehicle. no one but the g

suffered a minor wound to the foot was hit by the gunfire. however, several shots, as many as several struck the windows oo the elementary school. damaged as many as three panels on the third floor. here is chief lanier's version of the shoot off and stand off. those gun shots were a robbery in progress. there were four victims who were robbed at begun point, during throbry the suspects fired the weapon. after throbry while the officeri were responding to the area where the gun shots came from, that same suspect then, while armed entered forcibly another suv that was occupied by five other people at begun point andt gave commands to that drive off that car to take him somewherese else at begun point. as they started to leave the th officers responding to the

of gun shots come into the areae and they meet at that spot. officers get out of the car and walk up toward the suv and the suspects in the suv opens fire.. the suv then backs up a pretty good distance. the officers are now out of the car, had to take cover and shot additional rounds at thehe officers and they returned fire. right now that appears to be the gist of how this all came about. with police officers on edge, and that scene so con fuse, there were some thoughts that this might have been an attack on police. again, that is not the case. chief lanier saying one personoe now in custody, under arrest, ar charged with a crime.me. she did not list the crimes they're charge,ed with, but that person will be in courtin c tomorrow.to

everybody good? so thiso afternoon or a little after 4:00, officers in the firsthe district were dispatched to a call for a man with a gun. that call for a man with a gun,, as i understand, came with a lookout, a description of theof man with a gun. when the officers -- this was around fourth and p street southwest. as the officers entered the area, a car traveling at a highi rate of speed was flowing the area and had a person that appeared to match the lookout io the car. the officers immediately turnaround, got behind the car, pursued that car down south capital street. there were two officers and a sergeant who had jumped in thepd car with the officers. the passenger in the car just prior to entering the third street tunnel

out of the passenger window with a small automatic handgun. it looks like maybe a mack 11 handgun, out the window and fired shots at the officers that were behind him.d the sergeant that was in the car got out to secure that witness. after they fired that shot, itt appeared like the shooter dropped the gun in the tunnel,ue on the roadway. so the sergeant got out of the car to secure the weapon in then tunnel in the middle of the highway. the other two officers continued to pursue the car which came to a stop here. so right now i'll tell you thisu is what caused the lock down of the capital because they know wn were pursuing a man with a gun. there was some foot pursuit after the car stopped here.here we right now have the weapon in our possession. we have a lot of a.m. nutrition with the weapon. we have a car and we have three people fr
