sunday murder of dnc is staffer has the bloomingdale neighborhood of northwest dc on edge. there have been no arrests and police continue to say they need more help in order to solve the crime. tonight, on the street where rich lived a vigil will be held for residents who want to grief and show their support for the rich family. fox 5 paul wagner joins us from bloomingdale neighborhood with the story. paul? >> reporter: sarah and laura, most people know bloomingdale because of the epic floods here in recent years and the damage these lovely homes. now everybody is talking about the murder and the rise in the robberies. according to dc police crime mapping website, the robberies here in sections of the bloomingdale area are up nearly 80 percent compared to the same time last year. people tell us they're terrified and want the crime wave to stop. flowers now mark the

seth rich was shot to death sunday morning. he nearly made it home when at least one gunman took his life. apparently for nothing. police have no witnesses and according to the homicide commander were going to examine recent robberies for clues. robberies that have unsettled this community just north of rhode island avenue near howard university. a major concern the chief of police was asked to address. and a wilson building news conference this week. >> we did see some robberies in that area in the past four weeks. the that was on the radar of the robbery task force, because it was a pattern in an area that we had not seen consistent robberies in before. >> reporter: according to the dc police crime mapping website, robberies in and around the bloomingdale neighborhood are up 50 to 80 percent in the last two months when compared to the same time last year. and they are carried out in a variety of different ways. for example, back on june 19th a man was walking northbound here

suspect came behind and tapped him on the shoulder. the man was then sprayed in the face with pepper spray. his eye phone was taken along with cash. then on june 24th, just after 2:00 in the morning, four people were walking up s street near first northwest when four suspects sitting here on a ledge suddenly jumped up. one pulled a gun and said give us everything you got. the victim turned over cell phone, wallets and cash. on july 6, just after midnight a woman was standing in this ali when two men approached one had a mask and a assault rifle handgun and told her they wanted her phone book before taking it a they wanted her to unlock the screen and disconnect the find my iphone ap. >> folks are upset, angry, they are terrified, and i had to leave way sentiment that folks are terrified.

and just a couple weeks ago, the former marine married a fellow transit officer. meanwhile friend say 48-year-old lorne aherns was always smiling. before getting into law enforcement, aherns who stood at 6-5 and 300 pounds, an officer bought a homeless man dinner and introduced him to the other officers. friend of michael smith was not the first time the 55-year-old put himself in the had line of danger to save others. back in 2009, the former us army ranger jumped in the way to save his partner. furtherance for the two other officers will take place friday and saturday. at the white house, the president held a meeting with law enforcement officials. tomorrow marks one week since the mass shooting in dallas where five police officers were murdered. >> today's meeting included civil rights and political leaders

warning is still in effect. although i believe just a little bit longer because the storm moved on out. i wanted to point out this, this is a week cold front that we call an out flow boundary that came from one of the storms across maryland and that might continue to trigger a few more showers tonight. but here's why the flood warping was issued for anne arundel county and again we don't see any presip now. it has moved out. earlier our radar was estimating storm produce about three and a half inches of rain. they had a one or two roads that were closed and that was kind of a very sudden situation. let's hope it gets a little bit better. any of the storms we even see later -- i don't think there will be a lot paw i believe this next batch is going to go to to our south. they will be capable of producing heavy rain and they're slow movies. here are the headlines for tomorrow. it's all about the heat and humidity. you thought today was hot. tomorrow could be 96 degrees. and we could also pick up a few storms, one or two st

6:00, an amber alert in fairfax county has been cancelled. >> a six week old baby involved has been found unharmed. we have a picture. the baby's mother and the woman last seen with the child has been arrested now. by prince george's county police. they were found a half hours ago at an apartment complex in heightsville. they were last seen in liver river turnpike in annondale. authorities realized the baby was missing when members of the fairfax department of family service came on the home monday but could not locate the baby or her mother. it is still unclear whether the mother had ties to prince george's county or where exactly they were eventually headed. friends and family are starting to gather for a vigil to remember a democratic national committee staff killed. >> shot blocks from his house, police are a
