sarah simmons. >> i'm laura evans, it is day three, of the rnc convention, and tonight donald trump is in cleveland preparing to except the nomination of republican party for president of the united states. fox5's tom fitzgerald live in cleveland tonight. fits, how are things looking today? >> good evening, sarah. good evening, laura. here in cleveland, donald trump has rear-arrived after the cameo he made on monday in a dramatic arrival. the trump plane touched down underneath soon joined mike pence's perspective vice presidential nominee. pence will accept his nomination tonight, trump will do it tomorrow, pence got a walk through here in the arena this afternoon, but earlier this afternoon, outside his arena, the streets of cleveland have come alive today, with protesters. take a look at some of the video from earlier today. these are just outside of the security perimeter here, protesters erected what they are calling wall around

they were attempting to encircle the hotel where donald trump was staying, but they weren't table do that because of the security perimeter that surrounds that. so instead took this protest out on to the streets. they wrapped around, made the area of superior avenue and public square, they were met with a intense show of police. both the uniformed officers on bikes, undercover, as well, they were literally everywhere you turned. in fact, when these protesters got to public square, the police were there waiting for them. now, the protesters themselves say they intends to have massive rally tomorrow. but just as soon as we said that, cleveland police said they will be ready for whatever comes next. >> we are here to pretty much show that the wall of trump symbolizes we're not excepting trump style hate f trump wants to put up the wall, this is the wall to come at. we're battling phobia, racism, islams, present, all of

for that one indeed, thank you. a lot of people still talking about member and ya trump's campaign speech. tonight the trump campaign explaining how that speech controversy over started. >> yes, letter from the speech writer explaining the situation was released this afternoon, but critics have been quick to question if that is really how it all went down. >> fox5's ronica cleary live with the latest twists to this story. so ronica, what is it? what's going on? >> this is the thing, third day of the national convention, everyone can just talk about the first day, that's that speech from melania trump. did she or did she not plagiarize the words of michelle obama back in 2008? because we said it, we've seen it, they sounds so much alike. well, this in-house speech wider for the trump organization, this letter was released today where she takes responsibility. here is how she explains

mellen ya admires michelle owe bamm, a they were having phonecall, reading some excerpts from that 2008 speech, mcgiver took some notes, and somehow they accidentally ended up in the speech. that's the explanation she girls. letter goes onto explain that she offered a letter every resignation, and that donald trump refused it, trump saying people make innocent mistakes, and learn and grow from these experiences. now, to give you an idea of the relationship that mcgiver has with trump, she is no stranger to the campaign. she is actually written some books with mr. trump, these books that he talks about, so often, on the campaign trail. two of the books that she co-authored with mr. trump, they include think like a champion, and how to get rich. now, mcgiver, she apologized for what she has called confusion, and hysteria as a result of this mix-up with the speech, and what now many are saying

plagiarism. reporting live, from the old epic, ronica cleary, fox5 local news. happening right now, black lives matter protesters are blocking streets and causing some traffic in northeast dc. >> all hang along massachusetts avenue, and fox5's marina morocco is live there tonight with the very latest on what's happening there. marina? >> reporter: i'll show you the traffic, virtually at a stands still, say for about a block has blocked traffic allow these protesters to do exactly that. you see them here. this is the black lives moment, virtually saving themselves directly inch front of the national fraternal order of police legislative offices here, on capitol hill. you see there are two people there that are chained to the very sense of the fraternal order of police. anywhere else, and with any other group there is would probably be some sort of criminal offense. specially, fortress passing which here

statutes would mean unlawful entry. now, sources saying that there were calls put into the chief asking if they could make arrests, and chief lanier telling officer here on the scene to back down, to stand down, no arrests would be made. we've seen similar in baltimore, atlanta, dozens of people arrested for doing just that, blocking the entryway, blocking traffic, but instead it seems like dc police apiecing this group trying not to insight any sort of violence. so there is about roughly a block radius around this entire area that has been corded off by police. now, we understand that the movement here at about 5:30, will hold a press conference, unsure what exactly they will a say. but they say as of now they'll stay right here on the property, chained to the f.o.p. offices, for as long as they want to. and i'll tell you, they do not have a permit. now, here in the district of columbia, there is a little bit after blurred line, if you will, when it comes to permits,

the training that his father and brother gave him on ways to disarm someone. and he said that was what he wanted to do. let's show you the video one more time. when joey reached for the rifle, he told us, the first time, he thought he would have been able to rip it out of the man's hands, but apparently the guy had a tight grip on it. so he pulled even harder, and was then able to get it away. listen to him describe what he was thinking at the time. >> as you saw in the footage, i stopped and like had thousands of thoughts going through my head. and the last one that went through my head is, i mean, if i even still give him the cash would he still shoot me? i didn't know if he was going to shoot me anyways, so i was ready to fend my life. i mean, if i got killed or anything, at least, i mean, at least i went down fighting. >> so you may have noticed the robber

joey got the gun away from him. police responded to the area, they looked in the gun, there were no bullets in the rifle at all. but still, as you can imagine, joey didn't know that at the time. they did ends up arresting the suspect in this case, and we should tell you at this point there was some confusion about what happened to joey, and we talked to the owner of this 7-eleven, the franchise owner, and he says that joey didn't get fired, there was a determination, in fact, he gave him a promotion and he'll be the night manager here. he said that he really cares about joey, joey did a brave thing, doesn't know if he should do that, the next time, and i asked joey if he would do that the next time and he said, matt, i just hope it doesn't happen again. live in frederick county, matt ackland, fox5 local news. yes, definitely, absolutely, he deserves it. meanwhile developing in the district, police need your help identifying the suspect in t

it is a violent armed robbery you're looking at here that happened in northwest, this is surveillance video here, police say the suspect used a knife to try to rob the victim, and this happened on july 10th, along massachusetts avenue. you can see the suspect and victim struggling there on the ground, until another person runs over, tries to drag the suspect off of him. if you have any information about this, please call police. new tonight: push for maryland to reconsider a new policy to ban letters to prison inmates. aclu is coming up against the policy. the state wants to limit mail inmates received to postcards and off official legal correspondence, all because of highly addictive drug, the drug can be hidden inside envelopes or soaked in paper. the male ban is in an effort to prevent it from being smuggled behind bars. the forensics lab that supports immigration, customs, other law enforcement agencies has been overhauled. the

that there is, in fact, a police impersonator on the loose, however, they say, they have launched a full investigation which will include working with a sketch artist. >> grabbed knee, by my wal-mart vest and my uniform shirt, and slammed me on the property. >> a couple of times. then he threw me on the grounds. he said you little black b. make me sick. >> christina describes a terrifying encounter with someone she initially thought was a police officer. but she says alarm bells started to go off in her head as soon as she stepped out of the caribous, for starters, never look up her information after taking her license. >> i looked back, i knew i was in trouble because he wouldn't take off his badge and he was an official cop. >> prince george's county police department says as of now they've found no record of one of their office

avenue monday night. so, they are looking into the possibility that there is a police impersonator. >> it went originally from our internal affairs division, now to our regional investigation division, so they'll be combing the area for the suspect, you know, trying to pull video in the area, doing normal investigative things. >> describes the aggressor as caucasion man, about six-three, 250 pounds, a bald head, and a tatoo of a skull in the nape of his neck. she also says he was driving an unmarked grand marquis with a spotlight. a car the prince george's county police department does not use. >> if anyone else out there has seen a man of this description, or was stopped by a person who now upon hearing the stories like you want to know what that didn't seem right, please come forward. because we are looking for somebody who matches this description. >> and before he rushed from the scene, he said if i report this i would be dead. >> now

along the top. but wow. >> to the district now where in the last 30 days, thieves have been targeting yoga studios in gyms. there have been ten burglaries since late june. and dc police want owners and managers to be aware of this. so some of the studios have been ran sacked after the thieves broke in. and fox5 paul wagner joins us live from northeast with video of one of those break-in's, paul? >> i note burglaries target all sorts of places but yoga studios, that's a new one, that's why it jumped out at us, mainly police say ten have been targeted in the last 30 days. this one here, hot yoga studio, was targeted back in late june. let's show you some video now of the break-in this person according to police, this door behind me, got inside, and you'll see now that this person spends a considerable amount of time

spends time inside this yoga studio area. he goes through the cash register door. he seemingly finds something underneath a tower he wants to take, takes off his back pack, he loads all of this stuff into the back pack, then very, very calmly he just walks out the door. there was no one here at the time, we're told, let's now hear from the manager, her name is amber space. >> yes, he did look at the tape, and we saw the guy come in, we saw his face very clearly, we don't recognize him. he felt very comfortable. he took a lot of time hanging out in here, looking around for, i don't know, keys, money, whatever he could finds, and he broke the register and he broke into one of our back rooms using the crowbar. i think he was taking random things around the register, yes, ma'am, he took monday. >> i urging owners to make

maybe not going to make it through some of the maryland and virginia beaches but it is out there, if you are under it, you are seeing some of the conditions we saw last night. heavy rain. fox newscast shows even though showers seem to fade away, by after sunset looking at clear skies as we head into thursday. so, tomorrow, high pressure still in place. we are looking at dry day. but more of that southerly flow means we'll increase the heat, humidity, and the 90s are back. probably just low 90s tomorrow, but by this weekend, that same air mass that i showed in you places like kansas, nebraska, colorado, that will start to move into our area, so 90's, and high 90s are likely, and we make run at the 100's anywhere from washington down across part of virginia into the carolinas, as triple digit watch starting probably saturday. and come up close to some records, too, the old records for saturday, 102 degrees, not that long ago, just five years ago, six years ago for sunday, 101 there. and then on monday, 100 degrees is the record setback in 1930. that one is pretty old.

this is fox5 local news at 6:00. >> right now, black lives matter protest snarling traffic on capitol hill. good evening, thanks for joining us at 6:00 i am. >> i'm shawn yancy, it is a mess out there. our marina morocco in the thick of it all, marina, give us a update. waist going on right now? >> still this protest continues, we will take a look just behind us, because it has completely solved a traffic here, rush hour traffic stalled. you will see the black lives matter movement and protesters out just across the street, and on the property of the fraternal order of police, national headquarters, this is where legislation gets written up, at this very building here on massachusetts and fourth street here in northeast. and you can see now, that the sidewalks are back open, and they are @ lawing pedestrians to cut through. but, just minutes ago, some tends moments here, as people were told to turn around, they could not walk down the block. they were allowing black folks who approached this barrier to walk through, b

was white was turned around, and met with resistance. now, you will see over here, at the f.o.p., they are standing guard on property, i don't know if we can see, folks standing up, but there are couple of people who are chained to the fence, of property here at f.o.p. we under stands through sources that top brass here on the scene called chief lanier earlier today saying that several laws were being broken, this was not something that was, quote unquote, peaceful, because they were breaking the law, they were asking to make arrests, and the chief told officers here on the ground to back down, to stands down, no aris cents were to be made here today. you see here this continues, unaware how long this protest will continue. the protest is here, not giving us a general time frame, but it is affecting all of the businesses on this block. not a lot of folks allowed to come out here, and of course, we'll keep you updated throughout the night, as these protesters remain here, in northeast. live from capitol hill, marina morocco, fox5
