a gas can explosion a couple of weeks ago. jennifer davis is live in silver springs. this is a tough situation especially for those situation. >> reporter: absolutely is. really heartbreaking for so many of these families, it's been more than two weeks since the explosion here, ntsb cleared the scene and is new doing its investigation remotely. but it really looks frozen in that time here, because the building is too unsafe for residents to go in and retrieve belongings. this is what it looked like at the moment of the blast, and now, a 55 families 120 people in all are working very hard to get their lives back on track, and for the 19 young children who lived here, that means starting school monday. we did get an update on attempts to find new housing, but. what we're told is there were 26 households on leases. 15 now are in permanent fully furnished housing, five more by mid september. then about six family that is declined that offer or decided not to do it

been reached. there were a lot of people living in these apartments share wig friends and family and they were not on the lease. for them, only five are now in temporary housing and more than 20 more have been given money to stay with family and friends. take a look at video from today. because life still feels very much up in the air for the 19 children between grades pre k and fifth grade who attend nearby elementary schools. those schools had open houses and we spoke with folks. principals and teachers have been visiting these children even on the shelters. they're offering transportation assistance if the families would like to stay at these schools where the children's friends are no matter where their new housing is. a. a lot of donations of clothes, backpacks and school supplies handed out. parents we spoke to heading to these open houses said they can't imagine what their families are going through. >> must be hard, so they will need a lot of support from all.

you can this passenger trapped in the suv. it's the suv there engulfed in flames. when he attempted to put out the blaze with the fire extinguisher, it just didn't happen. fire was too strong and that is when the officer decided to bend the door for that matter, pull the passenger through the rear window but as he did this, an explosion from under the hood knocked off the officer's hat and the body camera luckily the passenger made it out safely. according to the police, the driver of the car was killed in the crash. strong after shocks continue to rattle central italy. this comes as the death toll continues to rise. the latest number, 267 people killed. since wednesday, morning 1,000 after shocks have been felt. today's was the strongest. meantime, many survivors have nowhere to go, sleeping in rows of blue tents set up by emergency services. other residents areta

little break in the humidity before the weekend is over. in the meantime we've had to live with it. let's take a look at at the numbers and see where we are as far as temperatures are concerned right now. it is definitely up there. temperatures in the 90's. pretty much at all locations. 94 degrees right now in the nation's capitol. 92 in baltimore. 93 at fredericksberg, 90 at winchester, 94 at dulles and 90 at gaithersburg. so the due points exactly where we don't want them to be in the 60's and low 70's across the board. as you know, you factor in the due points, you factor in the air temperatures. and we get the heat indices. this is what it feels like in our neighborhoods if you're stepping outside right now. we got triple digits, it's been this way throughout the day. feels like it's 99 right now in dc, a hot 102 in

at manassas. the air is instagram analyst. if you have any kind of respiratory issues don't spent any length of time outside in this weather. all the hot air continuing to stay in place, jet stream well to the north of us as we continue into the 90's, we have a ridge of high pressure moving in. we also have a cold front. that is going to gradually start to move its way toward us and give us a little bit of drier air once we get no tomorrow. tropics continue to heat up. here's gastone, normally doing a whole lot moving slowly to the north northwest at roughly about 17 miles an hour or so. then we have this low pressure system between cuba and the bahamas. starting to increase a lot in convection. we have another little system look here right in the gulf and this also we're watching very closely, expecting to see those showers and storms continue to increase and spread into the

he did some window shopping for weed. during his seattle road trip. what can you tell us about that? >> this triggered a furious debate. zeikel was in seattle for a game and went to a pot shop called urban, herban legends. jerry jones from the cowboys said it was not good that it is -- you know, a bad image. he didn't buy anything, he didn't smoke anything. and it's perfectly legal and it was more of a sight-seeing thing. we just got into a big argument back there. i personally feel like, he walked in and he looked. he didn't do anything wrong. it is interesting that it's legal in seattle. but other people here said look, there's an image issue. jerry jones is right. we

children who used to live here and the two buildings that were blasted open these flower branch apartments. now, there's 55 families, 120 people in all, but there is a special focused on the littlist victims because they have lost everything. they have lost their homes and still need to start elementary school monday. this afternoon, we spoke with two elementary school principals who say they and their staffs are committed to try to help those children get back into the daily routine after the tragedy that unfolded here. the 19 children who lived in the building that were blasted open range between pre k and fifth grade. they attend two nearby elementary schools, both of which held open houses, the staff has been visiting with the children even at the shelters, donations are being handed out and the principals at ok view and new hampshire estates elementary schools spoke with us about the students for
