could be technical issues withes your phone or with the system overall like what we saw this weekend. we have been asking district officials what they are doing now to make sure nothing likee this ever happens again.hap and for one they are now staffing two 911 distich centers. this center near howard university is not typically staffed with dispatchers and used only as a backup center. but for now there are call takes inside this building around theb clock. as we evenings innedui ar when e main 911 center went down on sat, this center that you're looking at in the video calls were not rerouted to the backupp center like it should have beene and it's still unknown why thaty system failed. the system is now working to test a new fail/safe program and in the meantime d.c. will havelh two working 911 cities. some cities always have two centers working but not the case here. we caught up with mayor bowser and i asked her w

can you give residents on 911? this was her response. >> we are obviously concernedios about any systems that aren't working. we are investigating the rootat cause ofin the equipment failure i've ordered our team to do a stop to bottom review of the technology problem and we're actually going to have our chief technology officer lead that effort. > i also asked the mayor about the outrage factor here, that a contractor would have the power to shutdown 911 1 # in thee nation's capital in the middle of the night. we know that contracting company is stillctin working for the ci, but that specific employee nowye is not allow to enter any city billings. the mayor says that there are t now conversations underway about what kind of access contractors should have. frankly we're looking to see if there should only be distri

metro was listening. that's the message from general manager paul whether it field as wi-fi is turned on in several metro stations this week. many customers have been asking for wi-fi in the stations and just yesterday metro started aae test project. the hope is to have wi-fi at all stations one day. matt ackland is life at gallery place metro with more on how much this cost and why this program is just temporary fororr now.now. matt, i think everybody wants to have it full full. >>reporter: no am people are talking about that laura and the reason it hasn't cost anything yet is because the six stations basically in downtown d.c. the wi-fi was already in place.e. what they did yesterday is simply flick a switch and now the public can use the wi-fi for free. one thing that's got so amm people con fused is that this is only a 45-day trial period. and then metro is going to shut it off.it they're saying in the futureure they'd like it opened back up iu these six stationsan

across the metro system.stem with just a few clicks you're connected. six stations in the core of the district offering free wi-fi, but don't expect it to work thek same as the wi-fi you get at home. it's not going to be a smooth so process if if you're streaming a video or trying to watch something on the netflix app. that's not probably the ideal situation for h this. this will be better3c for someone who is a secondary e-mail. another interesting part of this wi-fi it's prompted when youn turn on the service. just push this button and in realtime you can watch yourur train approach. click on the name of the station and that will give you what is normally seen on the platform. even though we're not on the on platform yet we can get the information that's already been displayed, when the next trains are coming, what their destination. alice from maryland is cheering the move by metro.ro. she says with so much troubling news coming out of metro thisro will help the riding experience a about it.a we do have other pro

deal with, but i think if they can do something, you know, give the people a little bit to make them happy it will make a little bit easier to deal with other problems. you have to wait down there for 18 minutes for a train it's at's least nice to be able to be on your wi-fi. > metro made it clear today this they'rema not going to be tracking your phone once you get inside the station and as you leave. this is just about providing wi-fi service. so what about this 45-day trial period? we're told that they want to evaluate the program afterwards. in fact, there is a questionnaire that they want you to fill out as you use the free wi-fi. they want to see if it's working and then they say that the hope is, the plan is to spend the money and make sure that it's available in all of the train stations system wide. sarah? lines here matt there have been a lot of talk about providin

more students in h maryland are back in school now. some returned to class sc yesterday, but others kicked off the school year last week. was terrorist the only county ht the statehe when students startn school after labor day, but that could be changing. mayor governor larry hogan is proposing to push back the school year until after labor day. fran coast supports the idea as well. extending the summer vacationmm will be an increase to familyly time and boost the state's economy. it would be nice in everybody started at the same

people who walk to school can feel a little safer in fairfax county. this morning they held ribbonbon cutting ceremony for a new pedestrian signal.gna here's how it works. if a wearing wants to cross the street he or she is to alert the signal that will yield to pedestrians. a red light will flash to tell people to stop. this available in some areas around town in d.c. as well. the pta at line brook elementary school helped launched that idea. fairfax county students will be back in school next week and many of them want to look good for the first day of school of course.co so many went out to get their haircut. the fairfax fire and police sponsored the event. about 100 kids got their haircut for free today. > there's another candidate in the raise for the white> t hou. hey, ronica. >>reporter: have you heard his name before

this is fox5 local news at 5. prince george's county, a 12 year old boy is in critical condition after a piece of woodd from a shed being renovated fell on his head. this happened in the 3900 block of 74th avenue in landoverver hills. the victim went to the hospitali with head trauma.a. d.c. police are investigating a deadly shooting in northeast. police say 24 year old tony gates was shot multiple timestip last night. it happened on the 1,000 block of rhode island avenue. gates was taken t
