> all right. here we go. ignore each side, the reality, the election right now, anyone's hands. new poll numbers out suggest that the red and blue can flipip from the long time loyalties. this is the who thest story at 6:30. by the way we invite you guys ts join the conversation. we want to know what you think so tweet us and use the hashtag 5 at 6. 30. before we get going i want tot imagine one thing.ng. jim's beard is gone. lack thereof. >> wet us and let us know what you think about that as well. > all right.ll r a new washington post safetyet monkey poll of all 50 states found this is an election like no other. >> we knew that. several blue states can turnrn blue, several red states can blue turn. donald trump 126, 168 still up for grabs. you must have 270 electoral votes to win the he

the trump campaign thinks they have a chance in ohio, inhi pennsylvania. some of those blue color statesor where his message really resonates who may be out of work in terms of trade deals. it with ill be interesting tore see how this all plays out. interestingly enough there was another poll, a cnn poll which put donald trump up by two points. let's break it down by region for you. in maryland, a two-way raise between trump and clinton, 61 percent of voters said theyd would vote for clinton. >> 31 say trump and 8 percent at this point were undecided. compare that to virginia, a very crucial state in recent, 49 percent hillary clinton. h49 donald trump, nine49 percent undecided. the district, we should noteuld here the sample size for d.c. too small to report. typically d.c. is a democratic strong hold.old. the associated to for the hill joins us. it's always good to have you on. >> good to be here,ha
6:32 pm
> let's talk about some of the break down. hillary clinton is winning inon some polls but then the cnn poll today had donald trump up by two. what are we to make all of us? >> it's a great question. a g i think part of the thing we'ree seeing is a natural tightening of the polls. donald trump is recovering from perhaps the worst face of his campaign in the wake of the democratic convention. goat into ademo controversy wite parents of a young man who had been killed in iraq. so i think we're seeing a natural return to the norm here. the issue is whether donald trump can continue to relive the kind of lead we've scenic hold. > we didn't hear a lot of a hillary clinton leading up to this week and donald trump hit u the campaign trail. did that hurt her. >> it may have. it certainly reduces her ability to command headlines the way she might like. the other thing that has hurtas hillary clinton is the continuing controversy and chatter about everything fromryh her
6:33 pm
clinton foundation. neat her of those things is a good story for hillary clinton. it doesn't really for matter hoe chooses to defense herself.self if she's talking about those issues, that's not a great thing for her.. we also know that she was hammered for 270 daze.e. she got her brand new plane anda she has been talking to reporters on the plain for ther past couple of days. i'm just curious. what has she been say? do you think this will serve her well? >> i think certainly it has thee potential tacony palmyra prove her relationship with the media to some extent.tent that relationship has been tense for years.r it's not just a new thing onng this campaign. she's obviously shoeing off her campaign plane, i guess, but really getting into the final sprint into this elect campaign she wants to really emphasize what she's doing, try to drive the headlines a little bit moree than she has been doing during the period.th now we're
6:34 pm
donald trump in just t aal few minutes. irwant to talk about donald trump and the fact that hillary clinton hashe backed with some f the spending. donald trump sees an opportunity, and is going tooin make a serious play forr virginia. >> i think it's more -- not quite desperation, certainly an urgency on donald trump's part. virginia had historically been something of a republican strong hold right up until presidentp obama won u it in 2008. i think he repeated in 2012. hillary clinton is up in theli polls atnt the moment i think tk has part to do with changingging demographics in virginia.nia. certainly if she carries the state, that makes donald trump's task in winning the white housee itself all the more difficult. > let me ask you a little bit, for weeks we've been hearing about the clinton foundation, the scandal.ndal was there h some pay for play that was going on. we know that donald trump's foundation has been questioned recently for a $25,000 donation it made. tell us a
6:35 pm
more about that and where that stands? >> that's an issue regarding arn state attorney general who wasaw looking at, i believe, trump university. that issue has not to the clinton campaign's frustration risen to the same way that thee clinton foundation has. i think that partly to do with donald trump tends to say controversy things. these more indicate controversyr don't get the same traction as they do with hillary clinton.th it is always great h to have you on. thanks for coming in.comi > we were just talking a little bit about this. donald trump gotit a boost from veterans today in virginia. also, 88 retired us generals and millions. fox5's ronica cleary with more on this one tonight.ight ronica outside the capital and the military vote is crucial. we learned about that back in 200
6:36 pm
those absentee ballots. the fact that you can show yourself strong on defense, ens that's huge in this raise? >>reporter: it's been an interesting progression for donaldtere trump. i mean one of the first statements he made on the scene when he was announcing his presidency were those statemente about john mccain and war heros. a lot of people wrote him off at that time and obviously it didn't stop him. he's since understand the nomination and today he the sat down with lieutenant general mike flynn who used to be a part of the the president's admiration and now an avid trump supporter and they had this very casual q & a about the veterans, about the military, about donald trump's stance on international policy and it made donald trump seem very much in control ofe o situation. it was a different donald trumpff thaner we've seen. not that rally environment where he really kind of thrives offrie the crowd, but one moment
6:37 pm
he did get outside this conversation about the military was to respond to these neww developments related to the fbi releasing those notes about all of thoset= cellphones that hilly clinton, had they destroyed some of those cellphones with a hammer. take a listen to what donald trump said about that today.y. 13 phones, i phones, whateverver they were and just banking the heck out of them. how about the acid wash of the e-mails that didn't mean anything? how about the 33,000 missing e-mails that were acid washed, acid washed and rudy was telling me nobody does ites i because it's such an expensive process. there's a very sad time i'm telling you for justice in this country. this is a very sad time. i've never seen anything like it. > so you know, you were both talking about that poll in the last segment. i was looking at it
6:38 pm
interesting thing, that two-point lead that donald trump has, i believet that's win the margin offeror, but the reel point that we can take away from that is the number of independents. donald trump is leading hillary clinton significantly amongst independents so maybe these people may be coming a littlette later to the game, looking atat the candidates now. certainly i don't know what's is each of their minds, but i had to sit and wonder when i saw that break down and then thinking about all of these new developments recently related te the e-mails and the clinton foundation maybe it is resonating with some voters whos may have been previously undecided or not affiliated wita the party. we have three third-party candidates, at least two third party. we have evan mcclellan, gary stein and kevin johnson. when we talk about the independents, do we think some of the independents might breakt as an independent as opposed to going for trump or client. >> it's an interesting that i peoplent have to make when theye thinking about their vote
6:39 pm
this toss up between do i want my vote to compound, will it count with to one of these third-party candidates? or many i wasting my vote? should iou make a decision. this is not me, these two unlikeable candidates.able i think that's where a lot of the elect tort is divided. i really believe that if the committee on debates lets gary johnson into the debate, he's the one that's in the closest range, but not close enough to e let him in.im i think if they let him intoto that debate we may see more people willing to give gary johnson a chance. right now some of his numbers may be a little bit lower. he wasa li a republican governo. he he is a fiscal conservative,t socially liberal.bera > they don't know him. >> exactly. i think it will be very interesting if they delet himet in. i actually tweeted out at 5@6:30, a video that

johnson put out that said let gary debate, to hashtag to put pressure on hymn. id love to hear from the viewers. >> tweet ronica right now using the hashtag 5@6:30 and let us know what you think about that. it's beautiful out where ronica is outside the capital. nice shot out there. the affect of hermine are sortrt of long time. what is coming in now is a little bit more heat. and what about the humidity, caitlyn? comes.est so much for seasons changing.ani the unofficial end of summer.r. we are right back into the end of summer.mmer yes, hermine is now spinning off the long island coast and it is still throwing back some cloudse and showers.d s a lot of winds still along theog beaches and we've had a pretty breezy day ours. we saw ronica cleary out there

college these daze. >> our own tom fitzgerald visited the university of of maryland and no surprise here, students gave both candidates mixed reviews. >>reporter: here'sxed the deal, it's no secret college voters denned to vote democratic. a lot of people know that. however, they seem to sharere something in common with college republicans and it's this, a new tufts university study found that both college democrats and college republicans are not are happy with either choice thatt they have for president of the united states. it is something that we found reflected here at the universit of maryland.of when you look at these two candidates, are you happy withhp your choices?ices >> no, not at all. > why? them reflect my my views and i would really like to see a candidate who i could -- d feel i could depend on. i personally don't trust hillary. i think berniehe

candidates from both parties. clearly hillary clinton has her work cut outclea for her. donald trump may be facing a clip.c here's when.h the group that looks at young voting trends, they release a survey this summer, it foundnd among young voters of color only 10 percent said they would evenw consider casting a vote for trump. for 5@6:30, the university of maryland, tom fitzgerald.itzg > we do random things. >> we happen to find a my lenual in our studio. we're like general contact, high. >> you go to american, right. >> yes, you're just back toack school right now.ool are you paying much attention te this raise?se? >> yes, i've heard mixed reviews about both candidates and i haven't personally made up myy mind about which one, but i'm excited to see what comes out of the debate.ate. that's coming up soon. >> do your classmates, do theyy really care? do you thinkdo people actually care what's going on in the world with the

election? >> i think there's a goodd combination of both. if youco really care you're outu there advocating or if youou don't, you're at this point nott paying attention. are your friends going to vote. >> yes, i feel like most of them will. do you think that your generation, i'm generation x, you're a millenial, do you get t bad rap. >> no. > surprise. o. coming in.much for > that was jenikar, our intern. > she mentioned about the debates. donald trump said he wanted to w see who the moderators are, now that he has will he debate? deba that is the question.stio we'll take a closer look when the 5@6:30 continues. we'll be right back.

moderateor. ohio biden and paul ryan. candy roller who is no longer with cnncand got a lot of negate attention.atte chris wallace says he doesn't see that as his role as a moderator. everybody brings their own voice or approach to it. that was one of the reasons thas donald trump was concerned. he was talkingond tr about the e candy crawl i affect. he says now he's good. so it will be interesting to watch. cbs is going to do the presidential debate. a lot of firsts there for everybody. news greta van sussen abruptly leaving after 14 years. we don't know why she made the quick he situation. fox's former burrow chief will take over the show. a big surprise there.ise a lieutenant of people were stunned. she did not get to stay
