6:30 pm
? ? october 21 it's. let's get right to it. debate finally over. the countdown is on. i know you can't wait for the election. 18 days a to the polls. as you can see it is the hottest story at 6:30. let us know what you think. tweet us what's on your mind, use the #5at630 so we can find your tweets. both candidates made their final case for the american people. nearly 70 million people watched the third presidential debate. >> to break down the past week in politics and also take a look at what lies ahead, we do have about three weeks until the election.
6:31 pm
it's always good to have you on. the debates are over. i guess the big question is, did either of the candidates move new people into their column? what's your thought on that? i think hillary clinton did and i think it was less than anything that he specifically did in the debates and more because donald trump suffered badly particularly in the first and third debate. unfortunately for mr. trump those his position has i rided significantly. he almost caught up with hillary clinton before the first and now a significant distance behind >> now everybody wants to know if trump can kind of dig himself out especially given the claims he was making of rigged election and possibly not accepting thes election results. does that just embolden his base? does it help or hurt him >> he certainly been trying to
6:32 pm
certainly, if you make the appeal of everyone is against us, that various forces are against us, that could persuade trump voters to turn out. the difficulty would appear to be that he doesn't seem to have enough of those people to win a general election. and that kind of appeal and that kind of rhetoric does not on its face appear to help him in that regard >> let me ask you this though about that. we hear people hinting at this. this. there is talk -- and some of trump's surrogates have been talking about this, there are people out there supporting donald trump who have not yet made their presence known. they will say it in the voting booth. is that possible and could there be enough doing it to surprise all of us >> the two parts of that question i think tony are the key difference. in other words, yes, i think it's plausible that there are
6:33 pm
but the second part of your question was are there enough of them? the polling would need to be a long way off for that dynamic to change the likely outcome of this race, of course, donald trump could catch up somewhat in the remaining roughly throw weeks. that kind of distinction the idea he could gain a couple of points becomes more important >> do you think hillary, i she's got momentum seems heading, her way, what does she need to do to keep it? is this the point where she really cannot afford a big stumble and additional e-mails coming out? do you think that's going to have an impact on her lead at this point? >> it certainly could have an impact. i think the key thing for hillary clinton at the moment is to avoid any really major mistake that would reverse the trajectory of this race. she seems to be making somewhat
6:34 pm
this campaign. a lot of her advertising up to this point had been attacking donald trump. we're seeing a little bit more of her making her own case in case for herself, not just politically but personally. trump continues to battle with the media. he stormed off in an interview yesterday when a reporter was trying to ask him about some of the racist, is he a racist? is he all that kind of thing, let's take a quick look >> a racist you've been called a sexist. how do you respond? >> i am the least racist person you've ever met. >> it's interesting because essaying, look, you're wrong, but his, the way he handles it, we see a little bit of that thin skin again. what's your take on that >> i think that's exactly right. i don't think moments like that help him. i think that we've seen the
6:35 pm
in debates where he has taken bait from hillary clinton that he would have been better avoiding: attacks on the media per se don't necessarily hurt him that much because of his outsider appeal that he tries to create. but moments like the one you just showed are not good for him. >> what do you think the last places going to be stumping as we head into the election, one of the big states they really are kind of up in the air right now with? >> well, one of the swing states that is key. it's among the battlegrounds, one of the states donald trump performed better in. florida is looking more difficult for trump right now. if hillary clinton takes florida, which is the largest of the traditional battlegrounds that makes donald trump's path to the white house narrow >> we're going to talk would about this more in a couple moments. you mentioned hillary and the
6:36 pm
e-mails that have been leaked. i know she pivots away from that, but why does that not seem to be having a huge effect on her numbers? >> i think there are a couple of reasons. i think one is that it tend to be quite complicated. there's a story about morocco, which is damaging if you look into the details but quite difficult to follow. i think the more general observance is that the e-mails have been overshadowed by the many more controversies in which donald trump has got himself in. >> outrageous >> absolutely. it's been crazy for sure. niles, associated editor with the hill. >> speaking of donald trump isn't the only one. more e-mails being released by wikileaks >> latest batch features an e-mail alleging the democratic nominee was going to be paid nearly $12 million to spoke at a
6:37 pm
heard in morocco >> katie bows williams a staff writer at the hill. clinton did not attend that event. she was replaced by her husband and daughter. what do you make of that >> well, the details of that particular e-mail are a little bit complicated. but what you're seeing is -- is yet another e-mail that appears to play into some of these criticism that is donald trump and others have levied against secretary clinton that the lines between her charitable work and as a public servant were a little bit muddy. that was from 2015 shortly after she had announced her candidacy for president. not when secretary of state >> you heard me just asking nile about them. how come they're not sticking the way you think they might
6:38 pm
let me ask you this. are these e-mails really about kind of exposing the inner workings of a campaign and, you know, we see this public and private phase of hillary clinton? is part of the issue that people kind of expect that from politicians? >> well, one of the things that's interesting about wikileaks and the e-mails they've been exposing in general is that they keep promising that they're going to deliver the campaign. you saw them tweeting there was going to be a big surprise for donna brazile and for her running mate tim kaine. they have kind of a long history now of overpromising and under delivering what the contents of these e-mails are actually going to contain, whether or not there's going to be something in there that could amount to a true october surprise. so far, that's not something we've seen. >> seems like it's kind of mild.
6:39 pm
the beltway. apparently there was one e-mail that had the dnc chair donna brazile slamming the president. >> there's an e-mail from donna brazile who's the acting dnc chair in which she is talking to john podesta about the economy. and what she says is basically that that people are in despair about the economy. what she says is that while there have been a lot of jobs creator. they have been low and that people are spending half of their income on housing, and that because of that, they're in despair. now, just a month previous, she had been tweeting basically touting the number of jobs that have been created by the obama economy. so that could be seen as potentially embarrassing for both the democratic party and for the white house to have her sort of explicit -- privately contradicting the party line
6:40 pm
reasons doesn't want to talk about the e-mails pivots away from them when they're brought up. donald trump keeps talking about them. one of the things clinton does say is, you know, this is russia and they're trying to interfere. that's a pivot but it is also true, and is that something that we should be concerned about going forward? >> well, it's pretty widely believed at this stage that the hack of mr. podesta's e-mails can also be russian government. the u.s. intelligence community came out and said firmly the dnc hacked this was the russians. it was an attempt to interfere with the u.s. election. they have not made that attribution with the podesta hack. however, some private security forensics firms have said this is the same -- this is the same intelligence organization. you're certainly seeing that as an important part of this narrative. i think one of the most interesting developments of the
6:41 pm
see a hardening of republican attitudes towards wikileaks. marco rubio earlier this week came out and said i'm not going to talk about these e-mails and other republicans shouldn't either because we could be next, he's effectively echoing the clinton campaign at this stage >> it's a hot potato no one wants to touch. while the race for the white house continues to heat up, so did the temperatures for much this week. about have things turned around >> very quickly too. the rain made its way in. how long will this hang out? gwen here to tell us about the weekend. >> we got a cool-down coming your way and gusting winds to talk about. we're seeing a few showers here and there from the rain across our area.
6:42 pm
showers. the winds are our next story, we're going to have gusting winds. we'll make it feel cooler than it actually is. not much happening now with sustained wind from about seven to 15 miles an hour. we're talking 30 to 40 miles an hour wind gusts and we do have a wind advisory until 12:00 saturday. i wouldn't be surprised if this gets expanded across the i95 corridor because those winds are definitely going to be pretty strong. and very brisk. here's a forecast for you. sunday is the thumb's up day, plenty of sunshine, flirting with the 70 degrees mark. gorgeous to get poconos mountains and enjoy. i can't rule out an early morning showers on saturday. just be aware of that. we get into the week, we got plenty of dry skies until we get to thursday and we deal with another system that could bring us a chance of rain other than that. it's looking really nice and finally those temperatures pretty much getting back to
6:43 pm
nights ahead as well. back to you. >> thanks, gwen. we're going to take a look at the lighter side of politics. donald trump and hillary clinton took a break from the campaign trail last night >> attended an annual charity fund raiser in new york city. the two poked fun at themselves and at each other. all for great 'cause. tweet us your thoughts on all that's happening, use the #5at630. that's the word put some of those tweets on the screen.
