we're talking about polls. how do you we know how accurate they are? is it possible for them to be wrong >> the average has hillary clinton leaning nine of ten polls ahead of donald trump by 4.2%. only the la times has trump ahead. but when most polls agree, can they actually be wrong? >> well, in 2014, that happened in maryland. >> 16 preelection poles had anthony brown beating larry hogan for governor but hogan won by five % poll that had him winning, tom fitz joins us and it has a lot of people talking to this day asking how could all these polls be so wrong >> they're right to ask the question because you only have to look back two years ago to our area here in maryland where the predetermined outcome of many of the leading polls in the state were wrong.
5:15 pm

research. the one responsible was chris wilson. he will tell you when these polls go wrong, it is not because of how many people they sample. it's because of who they sample. now, for example, wpa opinion researchers uses what they call dynamic polling. a dynamic poll digs deeper, determines who actually is going to vote. an increases wpa criticize come election day. >> people like me live or die based on our criticize. if i'm inaccurate, i don't get hired again. governor hogan would not hire us back if we had been inaccurate in his election, i do believe that political polls, sometimes taken with skepticism because they're paid for on behalf of the candidate. if we could release a survey, we know we're going to go to be judged against those results in the future.
5:17 pm
2014 and maryland is that the only poll that actually counts is the one taken on election day through the voting. but they also say this. comparing one stat an entire nation's presidential race is tricky busy but when you look for a poll that you're going to read, the pollsters and the experts say look not if they're registered voters but who are the likely voters? because that is the accurate representation of who is actually going to cast a b giving an opinion of somebody who reached him on phone during that particular day. live on capitol hill, tom fitzgerald gerald fox 5 local news. >> that's where it gets difficult to predict. election day that's what counts. well, talk about did iy, this morning, so cold, i didn't know it was going to warm up as much it did. i was a little bit skeptical but it's turned out to be a nice fall day.
