>> president obama did invite president elect trump to the white house tomorrow to begin working on that successful transition team. back to you. >> thank you. one state it was a big huge factor in this race for the white house was virginia, which may have been a shocker for some who thought hillary clinton's running mate tim kaine would have garnered more support >> alexandra limon joins us live in arlington with more on role that the commonwealth played in this election, a lot of people shocked and surprised today. >> reporter: the presidential race here in virginia was a lot tighter than people expected it to be, especially considering that tim kaine was on hillary clinton's ticket, but still, hillary clinton, she did end's winning the state. however, it was very narrowly, take a look at this map so you can see what we're talking about. donald trump carried 45% of the total vote here in the state of virginia. and in general, he carried

from big cities and areas like washington, dc, meanwhile, hillary clinton she took about 50% of the total vote here in the state of virginia and on the flip side took the counties that were a lot closer to the area of washington, dc and bigger cities. now, the counties we're talking about, they include areas of further out like spotsylvania county, stafford county, and also today talking to voters there. they tell us they were very surprised by the election results, even voters who say they support donald trump tell us they are shocked. >> i'm gitty. totally unexpected but i'm happy about it. >> better him than hillary. anybody better than hillary

dc police vfth murders of who two women two weeks apart >> one strangled inside a car and the other found talked to death in a wooded area along the suitland baker in southeast. paul wagner joining us from j street in northeast with hor

jstreet. this is the mayfair mansions apartment complex. there are odd circumstances in this case, what we know is back on wednesday, october 26th, in the afternoon, two men were cleaning this parking lot when they noticed an unconscious woman sitting in a car. we understand from a police report today that the medical examiner's office did an autopsy and determined that it was a homicide on october 28th. but didn't tell dc police for nine straight according to a police report, the men cleaning the lot called 911 just after 2:00 in the afternoon, after they spotted the woman inside a toyota that was marked in the lot. she's been identified as 59-year-old umee of southeast. . oddly the police report says a dollar was found in one pocket and 54 cents in another. why they included that

the report also says the woman was strangled. for whatever reason the medical examiner waited 11 days before telling the police. we want to tell you about another homicide that we were at the scene of last night. a woman found talked to death inside a wood area off suitland parkway off of palm roy road. we learned her identity last night and we'll tell you a the second homicide we followed today is the murder of 40 40-year-old. we know according to police, a passerby on the bike adjacent to the parkway spotted her body in the woods after 3:00 yesterday afternoon and called police. she had been stabbed to death. crime scene is located in a very

apartments and townhouses on pam roy road. we went to a number of locations. hoping to speak with relatives. we were also unable to find any information on the internet or court records, at one address, a woman told us she knew her but was unable to say anything about her. we checked with dc a little while ago and asked them whether or not there was any kind of information that these two might be related. we were told there is nothing linking the cases. we then asked if there was any comment on why it took the medical examiner's office 11 days to tell m pd about this? i know i said nine days. i misspoke. it's 11 days before the medical examiner's office even told them. makes you wonder whether that set back the investigation. we're going to continue to follow this, live in northeast

tomorrow on the breezy side from time to time as well. notice direction of the arrows, out of the north, that is a cooler wind going to be coming into town and will help to drop temperatures. we did briefly get a little bit warm this afternoon for a bit. we touched 66. a combination of south winds ahead of the warm front. that's where we had a rumble of thunder with one or two thunderstorms producing small hail to the size of mes. we're down to 52 in 56 in dc. a chilly night as our front in the area of low pressure exits to the east. that will help to pull in the cool air and clearing skies and we'll see the suburbs dropping into the 30's and most of the rest of us into the 40's, chilly and clear and your thursday is also going to be sunny, breezy and on the chilly side. for rest of this evening, what should you expect? 7:00, let's keep the chance of a few showers still in the forecast at 53. by 9:00, we think most showers are out.

for a candle vigil underway right now, it's a vigil called dc stands together and the people you see say they're upset about the election of donald trump to the presidency. organizers who planned the event say they want the community to unite in protest of what the future may hold now that trump has been elected. the candlelight vigil is expected to go on until 9:00. you are making their profile pictures black. it's part of a twitter blackout in protest of donald trump's stunning victory. the hash tag started trending as many people were encouraging others to change their background. some tweeted they believe trump presidency will negativelily affect minorities immigrants and

this is fox 5 local news at 5:00. police on the hunt for a suspect who murdered an elderly woman. this happened around noon on sunday in an apartment complex along the 4200 block of 58th avenue. an autopsy revealed 75-year-old delores rivers's cause of death was trauma to her upper body. so far, there's no suspect or motive in this case a robbery suspect still on the loose. dc police say a construction

southeast about 8:00 this morning, the school was briefly put on lock-down, police are searching for the suspect. if you know anything about the robbery, please call police. . louden county officials are looking for the vandals who damaged the fair way at the trump national golf club in sterling, virginia. deputies believe the vandalism happen between monday and tuesday night. case is currently being investigated by louden county fire marshal's office. a protest on the campus of american university this afternoon, many upset over the results of the presidential election. some so upset they burned several small american flags. >> other students are not happy with the way their fellow students were protesting. matt ackland is live at american university with more. >> reporter: laura, sarah, we talked to a must be of students who came to the protest today and said listen, we don't like the way that the election turned out either. but the problem that we had is once some students started

flags and started burning them, we have a problem with that. i want to show you video taken by one of the students. this student gave us this picture, i should tell you. we're told there were some in the crowd who had served in the military and rushed into stop the flags from being burned. there was scuffle. following that, students remained in the center of campus, chanting antitrump words and debating students wearing make america >> that's when some of the opportunities from the black lives matter group pulled out american flags and started lighting them on fire. for me personally my dad is in the military. as upset zoom about the results the image of the flag burning brought me to tears. >> reporter: passion and frustrations were high here today. neck, one african-american student said to the crowd, i don't feel safe in this country.

some folks. we asked the american university about this. they said they want the students to be able to express freedom of speech and gather like this. that is what they did. they did have security personnel in the area. but besides that scuffle, that one scuffle, there were no charge issues. live on american university campus, matt ackland, fox 29 local news. donald trump's major upset victory over hillary clinton talk about the election results with their children and some sure how to address the topic in the workplace. here to offer advice tonight is dr. jay sing. i think many people need to hear from experts today on how to address this with their family with their good friends, who may have different beliefs. let's start with the kids. i know that was a conversation that i had at home. the kids have seen a lot of the

kids are listening and those conversations. what do you say to your kids? >> that's the big challenge. a lot of people out there are having that question, how is it possible for me to have this conversation? this was very unconventional campaign. part of that was the lack of civility between the two candidates, the speak and all. i have gotten today, phone calls from people who are having such a difficult time dealing with this conversation. i had a very close friend of mine called. she has a beautiful son who was adopted from china came back from kindergarten absolutely in tears. asked what happened? you know, at school? and all of his friends at kindergarten said well, you're going to have to go back to china now that donald trump is president >> what do you say

child. if he's between two and six, for example, they're not going to understand, if it was something different they wanted, it's going to be very difficult. if they're between six to 12, different conversation. because of that stage, they can understand that things are going to happen maybe they don't want to. at the same time they're not if they understand the political side they're not going to understand the guy himself >> more transparency children. >> have those conversations sit down, talk with your child, make sure they're educated about the issues. me, personally, the important thing is to be able to separate how people act from how someone is period as a human being. i have to say me personally i do not approve of the rhetoric, actions, many people like myself, my father is an immigrant. i'm from a background that's educated but at the same time i'm an minority.

myself are extremely scared after what's happened >> you're being transparent about some of your beliefs. do you take that into the workplace, other adults reveal and talk about that. is it safe now that the election happened. on the social media, there was more of a drive-by, i can say something, try to change their minds. now, is it ok to talk about it openly? >> being ok and calm. depending on the side you're on, if you happen to be a clinton supporter, johnson supporter, et cetera, you may be feeling a lot grief and it's important to understand that people should be allowed to feel those feelings, whether they're in the stage like denial saying no, this isn't actually happening, bargaining, maybe there will be a recount, this can't be happening. whether they feel angry,

acceptance because it feels so uncomfortable. we want to get there quickly when in actuality, it's important for people to understand it's ok to have those feelings. if we're in the workplace, friends, et cetera, to try to gauge that situation, my general rule of thumb is we got two ears and one mouth for one reason. >> that's important and the respect >> absolutely. make sure that if you're a you're not a sore wiener. i think it's going to be a difficult process for all of us to come back together. it's going to be a slow burn but the important thing is more than anything else, we're open to that progress to be able to make it together and i think the first step is reestablishing that >> wouldn't agree that the respect goes -- whether it's face-to-face or social media, there has been such disrespect and betrayal on social media and

sunshine returns thursday, comfortable afternoon with temperatures rising into the low 60's a lot like the past couple days. also a little breezy, but that shouldn't be a as dreary as today. satellite and radar, more robust showers up across new jersey into new york city and southeastern pennsylvania then scattered across washington. still light rain but you'd be hard pressed to be under one of these showers, they're very light and a lot of dissipating moving southward from baltimore and washington. 66 at reagan for the high temperature today, 64 dulles, 60 at bwi. they didn't see as much sunshine. temperatures right now in the mid 50's, some low 50's towards our north, 53 at dulles, 52 gaithersburg, 56 in washington. you can tell the wind passed wind out of the north directly the cooler air on top of us. we got winds sustained at ten to 15 miles an hour, breezy out there. it will be a little breezy again
