trump about public safety, education and statehood for the district of columbia. >> matt ackland has been covering this, matt is back on the train. i know you talk to the mayor, what, if any, details did she give you about that peeing? >> reporter: wasn't release all the details. basically said they had about a 30 to 40 minute conversation today. talked about a number of things. what they agreed on was education. she said the president-elect wants to push forward an agenda on public education. she also said she talked to him about infrastructure, and other important issues to the district. she also wanted to let him know about the real dc, that district taxpayers, pay taxpayers, fund most of what goes on in dc. and she just wanted to -- basically have a meet and greet. you'll remember, she was not fan of mr. trump during the
6:32 pm
so this is the way for her to have the meeting, come to new york city, and meet with the president-elect today. >> i know it's a little sketchy with the skype connection. statehood didn't come up much. it was mentioned but not discussed >> it was mentioned but she didn't get into the specs. we're on the acela train moving quite fast. i don't know if she mentioned it specifically. they did have a nice long talk. one thing she did talk about, if she breached the president-elect on the inauguration, plans have been underway for months. she gave him specifics on that. and she said that she would be at the inaugurations. basically saying she believes that in past, the republican presidents, just like democrat presidents have worked with the
6:33 pm
conversation and that they will be a good team working together on he many issues. she also talked a little bit about sanctuary cities. as you know the mayor has been under pressure to make sure she tells the president-elect, listen, the district is going to stay a sanctuary city even though during the campaign the president-elect basically said he could take away federal funding from sanctuary cities, but she made it clear that the district would stay sanctuary city. wouldn't give us any specifics, but meeting. so she felt good as she left, she also met with former new york city mayor michael bloomberg after she met with the president-elect. >> have safe travels back, go sit down, you're giving me motion sickness. >> the bar car is open. i hope you're not in the quiet car. thanks, matt, see you soon.

he'll go before a judge again on thursday. back to you guys in the studio. >> thanks so much. just few hours ago, president obama delivered his last major national security speech. take a listen to a portion of it. >> when i took office, the united states was focused overwhelmingly on iraq where nearly 150,000 american troops spent years insurgency and helping to build a democrat government. today, by any measure for al qaida, the organization that hit us on 9/11 is a shadow of its former self >> under his watch, bin laden have been killed, but there are critics who are questioning his
6:37 pm
president obama created isis. lisa, hi, how are you >> it's a pleasure to be here. >> let's get to it. president obama talked about his successes, what he deems his successes here. was the president successful over the last eight years considering the terror threats we face as a country >> obama certainly pushed counter terrorism forward in the they continue to go on the rise and part this is interesting because last friday, the government sponsored commission on enhancing national security released a lengthy report basically summarizing nine months of studies on developing initiatives, and what some solutions could be to the problems that the u.s. faces right now in the field of cyber security, cyber terrorism, this is a new war front >> absolutely.
6:38 pm
expanding, they have cyber commands out there. this is going to be a massive threat. how do you think this next administration is -- are they going to carry the torch, so to speak, when it comes to cyber security? seems as though they really don't have a choice >> this next administration certainly doesn't is a choice, thankfully so. we have to get in gear as a country. cyber security and these threats are constantly a moving target. part of the problem that's moves slowly, congress moves slowly and these digital threats are developing every second of every day. part of what this new proposal is suggesting is that private agencies in the private sector technology companies that are at the forefront at the cutting edge of their field need to work with government agencies and share information, and that's part of what this nutrition period and what trump is going to have to pay attention to is how these two sectors can work
6:39 pm
advantage of the knowledge that the private sector has. that's going to be something really big coming up and i think obama has worked to have different government agencies, worked together, but now we need to get the intelligence of the private sector as well as everyone together to combat these threats >> this is a topic we're going to talk about in the weeks, months and years to come. we'll have you backing thank you very much for joining us tonight. let's get another check of the weather with sue palka see how things are rolling out there when it comes to rain. >> the heaviest of the rain now beginning to push over to the east side of the region. east of 95. and we think that trend will continue. the we have the side we're down to light rain, showers, drizzle. fog will set up. st. mary's county. bottom line, this is going to be winding down just as the rush
6:40 pm
to have drizzle and follow later tonight because the area of low pressure that brought us this hard to to deal with but beneficial rain is just off the coast. we've had a problem with icing out to the north and west that advisory stays in effect until midnight for the icing. tomorrow, 8:00 in the morning, cloudy at 42, by noon, the sun is back, 48 and we should be able to climb into the low 50's tomorrow by 4:00, 53 degrees. we've a lot of sunshine. coldist air moves into town more on that later tonight. back to you, jim and sarah. >> thank you, sue. as always, we want to hear from you, tweet us your thoughts and anything pilot, anything we're talking about here tonight. >> use #5at630. keep that in my mind when you're tweeting us.

voting >> not literally. tom fitzgerald gerald is hear to break this one down >> why you led into me with bring home the funk. >> that's what we think, of when we see you. bring home the funk. >> holding your nose, funk, same thing. >> reporter: you look back four years ago when mitt romney lost the election. you know, and one of the things we found out from the romney folks was after the election, after mitt romney lost, the romney folks went back and did kind of a detailed autopsy, if you will, on what went wrong. why did mitt romney under perform the way he did? one of the things they identified back in 2012 was that he didn't do as well among latino voters as they had hoped.

the clinton campaign so far is that kind of backlog as to what went on in their campaign. they might not be talking about it but we do have evidence now as to what may have been behind the clinton defeat. let's take a look at this. this is a battleground poll just put out from georgia washington university. let's put it up on the screen right now, so people can take a look at this. what they found was this. that that clinton voters 24% said they were reluctantly voting. the clinton's reluctant vote was higher. people were less enthusiastic about going to the polls. kellyanne conway talked about that. she said if hillary clinton had picked bernie sanders as a
6:45 pm
the defendant vote, who was really into voting for these candidates? again, clinton under performance, 75% of her voters said they were defendant. only 79% of trump to voters said they were very defendant. so one of the things you're looking at here is that in very key categories, whether the voters were reluctant to vote for hillary clinton or whether voters were very voting for donald trump, enthusiasm matters in moving forward. people made fun of donald trump's campaigns, his enthusiasm, his ability to rev up his followers, they say that may not turn into votes. turns out it does. that's why he's looking back on this election and smacking his lips at a lot of things he was right about and a lot of the

hello to both of you. tell me what this is all about. >> nick was telling us it's a competition on soap box speeches. and you basically talk about important issues that you're passionate about and we want to basically tell our president-elect about. my topic was education reform. digital lizing our learning. moving from the standardized testing and making one level, if you will. and even engaging students in the classroom. making sure they're coming to learn, not just to pass a test. even being culturely aware of their history. >> i understand this is something you guys videotaped today so robin tell me a little bit about this. is this something you have done before, and how has it been received >> mix of challenge was started
6:50 pm
we just brought the program two years ago, this is our second annual city-wide soap box. we had 1,000 students across the district of columbia giving two to three minutes powerful speeches what they think should be done to fix issues of importance to them in the community. today, tavian was one of our finalists and we had 70 students come and present powerful call to action on what the next president should do around issues of education, gun violence, of issues. >> are they really engaged in the political process? do they pay attention to what's going on or do you find yourself one of the few that do >> i think in the government class >> you got to know it >> everyone is aware of what's going on. and they're very passionate about what's going on and how it affects them. i think they know that it's going to affect them.
6:51 pm
president-elect is going to be seeing these and is there any sort of reaction to them? >> we would love for president-elect to see all of the speeches and have a chance to hear from young people, because one of the things that we found is that in this project, young people learn to listen to each other across difference and have civic disdis coors. we would love for president-elect trump to listen to the speech >> i'm sure over last couple years. it is a sea change from when i think when i was in high school just to see how the discourses change at least for the better. i think adults can learn a lot from people like tavia >> exactly. i think that's what the micka challenge does. it gives a chance to advocate for what they're passionate about. it's amazing to hear some of the
