6:30 pm
shawn, how are you? welcome back. >> thank you very much. the trump transition, so who is in and who's out of this closely watched administration team >> side of your screen you see it's the top thing, tweet us what's on your mind with the #5at630 >> perhaps you heard donald trump is halfway home. iowa governor terry brandsted accepted. he's the longest serving governor in u.s. history served from 1983 to 1991 and was elected to serve again in 2011. >> congressional quarterly role call joins us with more on this one. let me ask you this first up. what makes him qualified as a four-term governor of iowa to serve as ambassador to china
6:31 pm
he's hosted the president of china, he's, of course, in iowa, big with agriculture. experienced solid politician who obviously donald trump is very comfortable with. >> let's talk about some of the other picks and names that also came out. we know secretary of home land securities security retired marine general john f kelly accepted his proposition today. many described him as sort of a hawk, who clashed with the obama administration over women in combat. plans to close guantanamo bay. what do you think of this pick homeland security secretary? >> fascinating choice, it's the third general who he's chosen for cabinet level positions. because you already have a general chosen to be defense secretary and a general to be chosen to be his national security advisor.
6:32 pm
i can't remember a time where we've had that >> do you think that's a problem that donald trump is surrounding himself with so many members of the military in the cabinet position >> it's going to be a lot of talk about it. in the one case, which is general mattis who is nominated for the defense secretary job. you actually need to get a waiver from the congress to get that job. he's only been out about three years, you're supposed to have seven years out. it's not that it's never been waived but it will be the democrats a lo about this. the reason for the waiver there is by tradition, it dates back to world war ii, the defense secretary is supposed to represent the civilian side of the government >> one more, this peaks interest here, a guy named scott peru, is the attorney -- suing the epa tapped to run >> donald trump chosen man who has sued the epa, called the epa
6:33 pm
organization, and he's going to head up the epa very quickly, we're seeing reaction from environmental groups saying this is a is disaster for the environment >> it will be interesting to see what happens, how much trouble they will have. we appreciate you being here on 5at630. donald trump is putting a pulse eye on business, he call for the -- the tweet came out early in the morning, the government to cancel a deal with boeing. although he was off by 2 billion dollars >> he you may remember he announced the deal to save hundreds of jobs at the carrier plant in indiana from moving to meeks. what could this mean for business in u.s.? roger. how do i say your last name? >> rocha >> thanks for joining ihe's the president of the league of the united latin american citizens. we appreciate it.
6:34 pm
know he's a businessman, do you think as president, he's going to be good for business mere in america? >> i think that's going to be his intention to be a good president and to be a good president for business as, you know, that is his forte. and when we're looking at everything he's doing today, he's making the steps or taking the steps to go ahead and be pro business, for us in the latino community. we are pro business because we see what he's seeing and part of our mission economic empowerment, in order for us to chief that is to have president trump to be effective in the business world. >> small business is a major focus any time we talk about a presidential election, just a little bit ago, he tapped linda mcman who was held of the world wrestling entertainment to be head of small business administration. interesting pick, but small
6:35 pm
>> as a small business owner, this country has so many small businesses. it's part of the backbone of this country. and you know, latinos are always, you know, we're very entrepreneur yell and starting businesses every day, a big part of the sba and in speaking with president-elect trump's pick for that area, all we can say is we're going to have to wait and see and look how it shakes out, but at the end of the day we trust the picks he's doing, they have the right intent, and tha opportunities for latinos >> thank you so much for coming in. we appreciate it. >> thank you very much. have a great evening. >> there was also talk of russia during the campaign. of trying to interfere in the presidential election. >> and today on capitol hill, maryland congressman introduced new legislation aimed at toughning u.s. interference from foreign entities in elections, tom fitzgerald with more on that one tonight. fitz what's going on?
6:36 pm
capitol hill. the question is this. what was russia's role in the election that we just all went through? now, james claver who runs the intelligence operation, he's come out and said that the russian government directed by vladamir puten was active in this effort to not only hack into those dnc e-mails over the summer but to alter the course of the so in congress today, the question is this. should they form a bipartisan nonpartisan commission along the liness of these other big investigations that have gone over in past years for other issues and look into exactly what happened with this russian involved in our election. if they're able to determine exactly what steps were taken
6:37 pm
published with time magazine for his person of the year name, donald trump told time flat out that he did not believe that russia interfered in the election, and that set the course for what happened up here on capitol hill today. maryland congressman eli sha comings, the ranks member house oversight committee and sheila jackson lee the congress woman from texas on the homeland security security committee, they were just two of what will be s asking for this bipartisan commission listen to how they describe the stakes that are up for grabs and why they think this needs to proceed. not only for democrats, but for republicans as well. >> i think it would be congressional malpractice if we did not look into this. i really mean that. we -- every two years, we hold
6:38 pm
of the united states. well, all of this is a part of the process. this is our democracy. we want to defend this. >> 17 of our intelligence agencies without a doubt have affirmatively made the point that it was russia that hacked into democrat entities. that means that the world watches to determine how we will remember, the way our go. is set up, it is the white house that controls a lot of these intelligence agencies, those will be under the control of the president of the united states of america after january 20th, pre tonight, jim and shawn is telling time magazine that he does not believe that russia was involved in any kind of manipulation of this election, there will be a bit of a standoff from the get-go over this issue the way the two sides have now staked this out.
6:39 pm
rubio said in this case, it was the democrats who lost but just as easily if russia decides they do not like the two incoming administration, what would be stopping them from say, turning this around on donald trump in his administration? so yes, there are signs on both parts of the political island that are keeping a very close eye on this and are concerned about what vladimir putin and the russian government may or may not be up to >> especially marco rubio who might see himself running again. you got to position yourself somewhere. thank you, fitz. let's check in with sue palka, she's in position now to tell us about the forecast. hey, sue, position >> that's going to be my new twitter handle. i love it. it speaks volumes. the best thing anyone on her called me, let's go to blossom for the forecast. so that didn't happen tonight. good now, shawn.
6:40 pm
dealing with another frontal boundary that may cross tonight with an isolated shower, but more importantly, it is going to make us on the chilly side as we're going to see our temperatures heading for low 30's much later as crowds also increase, that could mean a stray morning shower tomorrow, with afternoon clearing and temperature about 50 degrees, but that's very deceiving, because another front comes through and it's really going to start to chill us off later in the day, we're going to be seeing our temperature drop about 30 degrees tomorrow night and only 42 on 40 on saturday, windchills in the 30's, that's round one of really cold air, a second comes in late next week, we'll be watching late sunday into early monday for the possibility of mixed precipitation. lots to keep track of as december rolls on. shawn and jim?
6:41 pm
they gave tributes to biden and, this is the guy who served in the institution for close to 35, 36 years >> what's interesting he is beloved on capitol hill by both sides, republicans and democrats. so they applauded him and just said how much they enjoyed working with him over the years. he was taking it all in >> we're going to show you what he had to say about a 20, 20 on beloved? he said because i didn't run for president. back after this, 5at630. president. back after this, 5at630. join all your child?s sesame street friends as they discover that everything makes musc its sesame street live elmo makes music clap

6:45 pm
