enforcement fired shots. the subject is being interviewed by a team of fbi agents and sheriff office homicide detectives >> after the initial wave of panic, second wave hit the airport when reports surfaced that a second shooter might be at large. turns out those reports were false. many travelers are impacted at airports across our region >> lindsay watts is live at reagan with the latest. lindsay, what are you hearing. >> reporter: within just the last hour we have seen three different flights from fort lauderdale come in here to reagan and those flights took off just after the shooting. i want to take you video. we have seen some emotional reunions here, as you might imagine. theyo

the dark blue shirt said she had just gotten on the plane in fort lauderdale when the shootings happened. she says she didn't see anything, but people on her flight were made aware of what was going on before they took off. she says she was able to text her partner and family here in virginia. let them know he was ok. still, some big hugs and big sighs of relief here at reagan. >> the only thing we did know is we were the last flight that let us out. >> reporter: during the course of the flight, what has been on your mind. >> like it's just been crazy. i just felt lucky because no words. i can't explain it. >> i was just worried and sitting and hearing stories about for the

wife. that's terrifying and thinking that could have been my girls. >> reporter: take you to video of the shooting aftermath now. i talked to a man who flew in here to reagan who said he walked through this very terminal about 20 minutes prior to the violence. also, as you heard in the interview, there was a man waiting here at reagan for his wife, who was flying from fort lauderdale and he hadn't heard anything from her. he didn't know if she had made her flight, he said he called the broward county sheriff's office and only found out she was ok when she landed in virginia and called him. the couple wasn't interested in talking on camera but waiting with him at the airport, great to see that outcome. the latest from the fort lauderdale airport, suspended operations, and taking a look at the departure board. there was an american airlines flight to fort lauderdale set to take off at 7:30, that's been cancelled.

fox 5 local news. closer to home a man from maryland was arrested after he was caught trying to bring this handgun through a checkpoint. it happened yesterday at bwi airport. the gun was not loaded. according to the tsa, the gun was detected in the carry-on bag. he was scheduled to fly to atlanta claims he was taking gun to his mother's home for safekeeping. he faces criminal charges and up to $12,000 in fines. bwi issued issued this statement. the airport is closely monitoring the situation in fort lauderdale. at this point, there's no indication of any local threat. aviation security uses multiple layers passengers will continue to see many security measures in place at bwi marshal airport. on the heels of the deadly shooting in fort lauderdale, the white house is still preparing to host president obama's final fair w

>> the party is scheduled for tonight. tisha lewis joins us live if northwest with that story. >> reporter: lauren and tony, talk about a contrast at the white house. the final fair well party is scheduled to take place at the white house. it looks as usual here on 17th and pennsylvania by the white house. what i do want to tell you is that we can only imagine that this deadly shooting that happened in fort lauderdale will likely be in many conversations here at tonight's event. the final fare well for the obamas has been on the books awhile. there's no indication that it will be cancelled. what we do know is that the president has been getting briefings throughout the day on any developments concerning this tragedy that happened in fort lauderdale. it's too early to tell exactly what's going on if this is an act of terrorism

we do know that it's a multiple level investigation. we're sure many image of you have seen, we're sure that the president has seen them as well. what i can tell you is that we did speak with some folks who were in the area here tonight, and there was mixed reaction about whether this fare well bash should continue, whether it should be cancelled or rescheduled. take a listen >> it's a tough call. maybe they should talk about it. if they do continue it, but i wouldn't say it's going to be busy the next couple weeks, i don't even know if they could reschedule. i'm sure everyone will be commenting. it will be great place to see feedback about what's happening from dozens of people that will be there >> if they plan it they should keep going on, show everyone else they're still moving on, show -- still showing support for it but they still have their agenda they have to fulfill. >> reporter: mixed

people that we ---ing mixed reaction from people we spoke with about this fare well party, whether it should continue. we do know there's a long list of celebrities flying into town for the obama's final fare well party happening tonight son we're sure that many of them -- many people along with the country are experiencing delays amid this tragedy in fort lauderdale. tisha lewis fox 5 local news. before we proceed, we do want to let you know new information we've learned from canada regarding the shooting at the airport in fort lauderdale. an embassy spokes woman from canada reports that the florida airport shooting suspect has no connection to canada and did not fly from that country. apparently there had been some reports, we didn't report it but there have been some reports he may have flown from canada. there are reports that he may have flown in from ancorage. we'll let you know about that

once we find out more. five lives lost, more injured. must have just been terrifying everybody inside the airport. you had family members there. >> it was a bit surreal. my family was coming back from a vacation. my sister in law and her family and her kids -- it was interesting because they had a connecting flight in new york that was delayed about 20 to 40 minutes because ice. you know, when they landed in fort lauderdale. i'm from south florida, they were going home. they were delayed on the tarmac because of the active shooter. then they were allowed to leave the plane, everyone thought it was an all clear, they were at baggage claim when the commotion went on which was thought to be a second shooter. we have now learned it wasn't. they ran and hid. they hid behind a partition, ran where they could. they were able to get to a bathroom and there was a group.

hiding in a bathroom and police escorted them to the back of say a hudson news or a store at an airport where everyone was on lockdown they had no idea what was going on. actually, just saw video from my sister in law that was a bit harrowing in the heat of things they thought there was an active shooter. but thankfully >> it's amazing people have their wits about them to be filming that. >> she has three teenagers, they're going to document >> this is >> this is where they were hiding out. you can see the armed police as they were escorted out, then i think last one here, this is -- they're -- this is where they are now, everyone is on lockdown at the airport there now, they were actually just warned by a broward police officer that they found a package they were doing a controlled explosion and to not worry, but they were worried there would be another pni

because when people heard, they sent me a video, i just shared that before i came up here of that police officer briefing everyone as to what is happening. but you know, now, everyone is there, they're safe. most people are just -- they don't know what's going on. everything is on lockdown, they can't get to transportation >> your family, i just want to make sure i understand, what you just said. so according to a member of your family, they just told you that they found a suspicious package >> correct. i just shared the video. you see a broward sheriff department, i believe, officer telling them they found a suspicious package. they will be doing the controlled explosion. it's all under control. do not be alarmed. of course, the heighted sense that is going on there. >> the situation still ongoing >> still ongoing. it's touch and go >> clearly, from the communication that you had, i would imagine they have no

even becoming president. >> during her eight years in the white house, mrs. obama supported many causes, including helping military families and fighting obesity. talk about the weather now, we were talking about snow yesterday. we really didn't see mutual. there was a little bit of frost when i woke up this morning. >> certainly was. let's get the latest on the forecast for tonight here's gwen tolbert with that. >> we had a few flakes in some neighborhoods however, things are going to be changing once we get into tonight into tomorrow, because we're talking snow that's going to be a lot more than what we just witnessed in the last 24 hours or so. let's take a look at our maps. you'll see there is some precipitation moving its way up now. however, this is not the storm system. this is actually a trough. areas to the south of the carolinas as well as charlottesville seeing some of this light snow activity right now. but this is not what we are waiting for. what we are waiting for is

to happen in the overnight hours. and we are talking a bit of accumulation here, not much for the i95 corridor for dc but area to the accident south, southeast and east are going to get the biggest impact from this storm system. areas of southern and central delmarva getting hit pretty hard. two to four a little bit north of that. right now it's looking like the dc corridor will see anywhere from a dusting to maybe two inches to our south. but that is about it. now, could it change? definitely it could change. what could change it? well, if that's system decides to track a little bit more towards the west, we will see some changes in these numbers. that is not what it is looking at in terms of our track. winter weather alerts in place. winter storm warning for areas to the south from 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. saturday. winter storm advisories in effect as well then we have a

western counties where temperatures are going to drop and winds will be gusting creating very significant windchills. the storm is expected to pass south and east of us. overnight, it will kick in anywhere closer to 2:00 hour, i anticipate, and lasting through to saturday afternoon. southern maryland getting most significant snow. that's what it's looking like now. but low confidence for anything much in accumulations closer to the i95 corridor. tonight 23, we got a big dip in our temperatures for the next few days as well. very cold. those gusty northerly winds we'll have significant windchills by the time we get into sunday. and the next couple days here's what you can look afford tfolks, bundle up. i'll have more details and the full forecast for you in just a bit. we'll be back after the break.

atm from a gas station on december 20th onions chapel road in heightsville. the suspects crashing a u-haul truck into the atm throwing into it truck and taking off. it's one of six cases in prince george's county. at this point, detectives are not sure if related. prince george's county did say that the u-haul is stolen but not related to the dc case from earlier where police recovered four atms inside a stolen u-haul monday, that moving truck was found in the 2000 block of 38th street southeast. in fairfax county police are now looking for more victims after a springfield man was charged with sex offenses with a minor. police say 33-year-old hussein babeeb is charged with ab abducting a minor. he was in jail on an initial charge of contributing to the delinquencies of a minor. he met the uner

earlier this month in springfield. in the district, one lawmaker took matters into his own hands by personally removing an offensive painting that depicted police officers as pigs. caldwell congressman duncan hunter removed the painting and delivered it on the office of lacy clay. it had been hanging up after he won clay's annual congressional art competition. some changes in prince george's county after a bribery scandal was uncovered >> paul wagner is working that story for us tonight. paul? . >> reporter: the county executive reacted angrily to this corruption in the county and we have new information on one of the commissioners. i'll have that straight ahead. lauren? >> reporter: continuing to follow breaking news from fort lauderdale. the airport there, a terrifying scene unfolded this afternoon. five people

dead after a deadly shooting incident at fort lauderdale in florida. >> we do not know the motive >> several people killed and multiple others wounded when man opened fire at the airport's terminal 2 early friday afternoon >> the active shooter shot at least 13 people. eight people, as i know right now are in area hospitals being treated. i don't know the degree of their injuries. five people have sir come to their wounds and tragically are dead. >> reporter: witnesses report seeing man who appeared to be in his 20's wearing a studios t-shirt fire a weapon near a baggage car sell. they say the shooter was silent. reportedly shot by police when he tried to reload a gun. police saying one shooting suspect was taken into custody. sources identifying him as a 26-year-old man named esteban santiago. and they say he was carrying a

that was the sentence handed to ryan matthews of northwest dc. he pleaded guilty to shooting z ane kentner after a fight broke out in northwest dc. his family was in court during today's hearing but did not comment about the sentencing. virginia state police say they need help to locate a driver who struck and killed a man during a chain reaction crash on the beltway last month. they say liam, lost control of his vehicle on december 17th, he got out of his vehicle and was hit as other cars began sliding out of control and crashing. he died there at the scene. police have determined none of the 23 vehicles involved in the crash hit wan. they're now looking for the person responsible. an update. a dump truck crashing into a home in oxon hill. tonight we're learning police charged the driver

with several traffic violations. police say the dump truck first hit a couple of the cars before crashing into the house. four people suffered minor injuries in that crash. prince george's county executive mr. baker says he will seek changes in annapolis after who members of the liquor board were arrested >> baker said he was stunned to learn of the charges and the county will go after anyone who attempts to profit through pay to play. paul wagner joins us live from largo with the story. paul? >> reporter: tony and lauren, after we saw the county executive today and we heard from him, we came over here to the liquor board. they're on the 4th floor of his building. we went up into the office and tried to talk to people. they declined to speak to us on the record or camera. they confirmed, however, that the fbi did not seize computers from their office, so they were able to work, the fbi did file a

asked to see it they declined. we know four people have been arrested in this corruption investigation, one of them a commissioner whos governor's office now confirms today resigned. >> the man on the right is david sun, the director of the liquor board and the man on left is anushsued. cash payments ranging from 1 to $5,000 ranged by cooperating human source seven described as a lobbiest with liquor clients and eight described in the same documents as a state elected official. rasherm baker said he had no prior knowledge and learned of the arrest yesterday morning >> i'm disappointed and pissed off we have spent the last six years working ver

kelly's time slot on fox starting this monday. prince william's county board of supervisors chairman corey stewart is keeping a campaign promise. stewart is running for the republican gubernatorial nomination in virginia. he promised to give away a gun and sponsor add contest. he announced the winner he says a navy veteran from wood bridge will receive a new ar15 semiautomatic rifle. he he says the navy vet is a member of the nra and loves the second amendment. coming up what a storm. elementary kids stuck on a school bus after a crippling snowfall >> how the snow day policy played a role in the timing of the disaster it wasn't here but we are keeping an eye on a storm system headed our way. it hasn't developed. but it will move straight up the midatlantic. we have several weather alerts

an update from seneca new york where dozens are back home after being stranded during a severe snowstorm. the heavy snowfall caused major problems on the roads leaving school buss stuck for hours. some students were on busses while dozens of others were stranded at their school because parents were unable to pick them up. school officials say the students were not let out early because they didn't want kids going home alone heavy fog and ice being blamed for a major pile up. in china, at least 20 cars crashed. fortunately no one was hurt. authorities say the fog was so

could barely see 100 feet in front of them. residents are going to have to get used to it. forecasters say the fog is expected to stick around at least a few more days. in atlanta georgia, crews were working around the clock to prep for the weekend's winter storm, the city is producing 5,000 gallons of bryan. after the snow storm that crippled atlanta in 2014, official there is don't want to take any chances. certainly remember that. i remember we were reporting on it here. >> that's not common for them >> it's coming from the south, the gulf states. for our area, that's the other thing we're going to talk about is south and southeast of the i95 corridor. you think about delmarva, ocean city. >> they're going

>> let's get right to it. i want to fill you in on an awful lot of details in terms this system. we were disappointed we didn't get a white christmas. yesterday, everybody, you know, was coming on twitter and facebook going, we're finally going to get snow, looking for some of it. it was a few flakes here and there, some did see a little bit more. however, a whole different ballgame in termss of those snow accumulations. we'll put it altogether for you. we're talking snow is possible. mostly to the east on saturday and to the southeast. i'll show you exactly where we're talking about in a second. cold, this is the next to story. it is going to be extremely cold. temperatures dip area-wide below freezing. you are really going to feel the pinch of that. it is going to be extremely bone chilling cold. single digit windchills, winds will get gusty. we're going to have windchills, areas to our far left will see windchill advisories that will be in effect because they will

to feel like it's anywhere from minus 20 to minus 30 we're talking who were thermia dange: temperatures will be rising all over again. here's a look at radar. here's what's happening. what i want to tell you this is not the storm system. this is actually a trough across the south that's causing some light somehow and southeast of that rain. that system still developing off the gulf coast and it will start to hug the coast as it moves up. that's going to be a factor we have to watch closely. winter weather, yes, winter storm warning in effect. weather weather advisory a little bit more to the west. we had a lot drier air across the i95 area. areas to our east.

going to actually prevent as much snow accumulating there. here is aware we're talking about snow likely possible and unlikely because of that. there kind of is a challenge for the storm system because of that drier air. four to eight inches across lower southern maryland into delmarva. a dusting to two inches primarily along the i95 corridor. here's a look at what we're speaking about in the overnight hours when it's anticipated. here's 3:00 in the morning, we get to 7:00 in the morning, becomes more widespread. 1:00 in the afternoon, starts pulling out as the system moves off to the northeast and by 4:00, 5:00 at night, much improvement by 8:00, it's out of the wait. cold arctic air settling in, going to feel like 20's and 30's. it will be bitter. our temperatures right now, 30 a manassas by the time the
