incident in terminal 2 baggage claim was first glimpse into the tragic horror unfolding at ft. lauderdale hollywood international airport. witnesses say 26-year-old estafan santiago didn't have a word as he opened fire on terrified passengers. >> as i got my first bag off i heard the first shot as i did the person next to me fell to the gound. >> the shooting began before 1 a.m., santiago packed gun and ammunition in packed bag he retrieved them and came out shooting. >> everybody was waiting for their luggage and he started shooting. >> some passengers troon get away from gun shots and ordinary stayed in place and protect and comfort loved ones. >> we stayed down until we saw a policeman come findly. >> and one man says sant yoing owe reloaded and kept firing

in your xwaingage as you see on the sign here. that's what occurred in the ft. lauderdale case. estefan sandiego according to authorities carried out the attack after retrieving it from baggage claim. i talked to the security expert how it happened. >> this is more like a shooting anywhere else in a mall or somewhere because there's not too much you could have done to prevent this with existing regulations or anything you could imagine. >> this guy was honorably discharged from the arm a national guard with concealed army permit he recently visited and said isis was forcing him to watch videos. how does somebody like this able to get a gun on to a plane. >> yeah, well, it's really all part of the broader gun control debate. not just airline question but question of how does somebody like that have a gun to begin w and if you carry it in your

you can carry sglon why is he not on a no-fly list. >> if he's allowed to fly and carry a gun then well this is hard to prevent. but, whether he and what he is said approaching fbi, that's a good question why he was able to travel at all. >> at reagan national we saw heavily armed officers nothing out of the norm. a spokesperson for washington met poll stan airport thorty said they constantly look at security to develop safety. earlier it today it was emotional as loved ones greated passenger as riffing from ft. lauderdale. lindsey watts so with a woman that said he was on one of the last planes to leave before the airport shut down. she didn't see or hear the shooting but learned about it before she took off and she and her partner are grateful she was returning home unharmed. >>

the threat of winter weather road crews are gearing up for the possibility of snow. virginia governor terri mc callive declared a state of emergency which is supposed to have an impact in southern virginia. >> no flurries throughout yet. gwen is here to tell us what to expect this weekend, hey, gwen. >> we have a lot of things happening not only the snow keeping a close eye on we have extremely cold conditions as temperatures really plummet below freezing and some gusty winds. a combination of it all. here's a look at what is happening now on radar. the storm system is actually just sarting to get pretty organized over areas of the southeast. you can see what is happening precipitation-wise to the south of us and we had a trough as part this play and that's actually created sonl snow of its own. that started to affect some areas near charlottesville and areas south a little earlier. as we pan out now, here you can see the big picture. a lot of this is going to start to move its way towards us as we head to the overnht

and that's n we and seeing anything that will affect our reej ynon. looks like it is close to a.m. and stick around for the greater part of tomorrow and afternoon hours we start to see it tapering off and we'll get improvements. and in the meantime, we have a lot of alerts to talk about and winter storm warnings for areas to the east and southeast and were the greatest impact will be felt. winter weather advisory, which i tweeted out recently been updated to expand to reach many areas from the d.c. corridor and to the far northwest a wind chill advisory it will feel minus 20 to minus 30 with single digits as we move further into the weekend. a lot going on here, folks. here's a look at snow cast numbers. it looks like a little shift in that track right now in terms of motd elz. models and there's a chance we could see" of snowfall d.c. and more east 2 to 4"

southern maryland as well as delmarva and central and northern delmarva in parts of vir vr as we told you. lows into the 20s. bundle up. it won't get much warmer the next two days. more in the forecast, bang to you. >> gwen, thank you very much. the storm could dump a lot of snows in parts of southern virginia. a state of emergency is now in effect across the commonwealth. >> northern virginia should it escape the storm right now salt trucks are in holding pattern. tisha lewis is in arlington. tisha. >> it could be the lack of urgency about the impending snowfall. we soo a state of emergency in place. the streets and sidewalks have all been treated. but, to tell you the truth, it was business as usual here at whole foods and other grocery stores in the area. plenty of bread, water and canned goods to go around. i went inside and checked it out myself. plenty of pickings.

>> we're back now with more on winter weather that could affect your weekend plans. we're also tracking potential for snow. >> yes, gwen is here with more on when and how much snow you should expect. gwen, let me tell you i was out earlier this evening and practically accosted. people think we're going to get a lot of snow. i said no, no, no, not here down south. >> that's where the biggest impact will be. south and southeast. however, we got some updates

track. our numbers climbed just a little bit. we'll update everybody on that as we get into this and give you all the details and tell what you you can expect exactly wherever you are. let's look at maps now. we're beginning a look at radar. and actually this system is now starting to get a little more organized off the south east and as we pan out a little bit you can see all the moisture associated with it. one of the things we're dealing with here is the fact that there's a lot of dry air and it kind of gives a little challenge to the system. but once the comes down temperatures also will be well below freezing and it means it will stick quickly. it is going to be that fluffy kind of snow, however. as we look what is going on now we still have winter weather alerts to talk about winter weather advisory as i mentioned earlier has been expanded here's where we have winter storm warning and winter weather advisories these kick in overnight tonight and lasts until saturday in the af

to the far northwest you see we have winter chill advisory over the higher elevations one thing that happens this weekend we get pretty blustery cold wind. with the snow that's really going to cause an impact as well and make travel hazardous but those winds will create pretty significant wind chills and advisory level for the far northwest making it feel like minus 20 owe minus 30 with temperatures in the single digits and sunday expecially for our area pretty significant wind chills as well and temperatures already into the 20s and they're not going to be bunling too much. so i've adjusted snow totals for you timely for the d.c. corridor we're looking at 1 to 3" once again the track of this system will be determining factor. it shifted more to the northwest. and that is why we've upped numbers. dusting more northwest of city and we are seeing that

does start to shuffle a little more there's a chance we could see a little more accumulation. this is a factor that is we have to keep an eye on and watch definitely closely for you. here's a look at future cast and timing a.m. moving it's way up, 3:00, here's 12 noon it's starting to clear out, 3, 4, 5 in the afternoon headed to the wet and there we are 6:00 will start to move its way up northeast we're talking cold. it's not going anywhere, folks, stick around in the beginning of the week those daytime highs and overnight lows will be down right chilly into the teens for overnight lows by the time we get to sunday night. here's a look at next couple of days for you highs in the 20s and plenty of sunshine though on sunday but don't be fooled by the sunshine it's going to be a dead you have to bundle up. i suggest you stay inside both

back to you. >> thank you, gwen. >> to the top story following tonight deadly shooting at ft. lauderdale airport five people were killed and eight others injured when a gunman opened fire in baggage claim area of terminal two it sent panicked travelers running out ever the terminal on to the tarmac. >> the gunman is esteban santiago they say santiago landed at the airport and got the weapon from his checked backage esteban santiago is from alaska and served in iraq with the national guard. he was demoted and discharged last year. the associated press reports santiago went to the fbi office in alaska in november to say he thought the u.s. government was controlling his mind. >> following shooting, people were using social media to not only document what happened but let loved one knows they were safe. this is snap chat story from a flier that landed at the airport right after the shooting. it shows the tense moments waiting inside, the heavy

secu was taken by niece of our own brody logan. >> brody joins us now to talk about what happened and what his family experienced. first when you first heard from family members they were at the airport who was going through your mind. >> disbelief. you don't expect something like this to happen. >> especially ft. lauderdale airport. >> i lived in ft. lauderdale i'm from knowledge of there. i go to the airport all the time to get away from bigger airport. it's not that lanl of an airport. it was extray and then you any there was active shooter at the beginning. >> sure, this we aaron the tarmac that's safe for them to be and safe enough for them to leave the plane. they're waiting in baggage claim and then that's when there was second scare. what everyone thought was second shooter. so they started running. you saw on snap video first they r

they ran behind small partition, wall which was very on. there's another video i shared that showed that then ran from there into the booth ram and there were a ton of people hiding all in stalls to make sure five person family all in one stall and then went to this closet area behind say a hudson news or something of that affect at an airport and they were there for a number of hours. they didn't know what was going on. they were checking social media like all of us to find out what was going on and then they were finally usherd out by swat teams and various police officials out into basically parking lot and then stranded there and could not go anywhere. the whole place was on lockdown. >> this started 1 something this afternoon. what is the situation now with family they're hoax. that's good. it's also one of those thing a minor inconvenience when you're on lockdown they were parked in off site parking area they had

to walk almost two hours to get to the car. there's no shuttles, my mom tried to pick them up she was not allowed anywhere near the airport. but, it's yeah a whole surreal thing. it's also there's three teenagers documenting all of this that's kind ever a show of today's day in age you can see everything going on just about and sheer papic when we all thought and they thought that there was a second shooter. >> sure. >> that's when everyone ran thankfully there was not. . >> but again this is small airport and baggage claim area is not large in ft. lauderdale airport. for him, the shooter, to be able to kill those people and then potentially be a second shooter there would be so many people in the small area waiting for cruise lines and family members to pick them up. >> you say your family is home now they got home a short time ago. >> they were waiting for a number of hours but they were

>> she was worming up her hands like it's cold in hair. >> i stepped outside for a minute we're in the 20s. >> is it really that cold. >> it's really that cold and will get colder especially overnight lows into the next couple days. we got a number of things going on. we have the potential for snow coming. we have cold conditions and we have got some really blustery winds and wind chills. >> wow. >> cold winter weekend serving it up in one shot, aren't we, folks? really take it all seriously. because some parts of our areas to the far northwest anyway have wind chill advisories issued and that you know can mean hypothermia as well. really take this very seriously. and we want you to be safe as well out there we're talking about primarily the

and southeast of our region our viewing region. we'll sew you that in a second. very cold ahead with temperatures in the 0s and 0s only and single digit wind chills by the time we get to early sunday and we see that sooner for areas of our far northwest. and temperatures are going to moderate into next week. we have that whole roller coaster thing with temperatures and we'll warm back up to 50s again by the time we get to hump day. in the meantime, here's radar for you. lots of action here as we keep an eye on the storm system that is starting to really get itself organized and moving its way up the mid atlantic and we'll see quite an impact as i mentioned areas south and southeast of d.c. corridor but we're not without seeing some of that action also along the i 95 corridor and a little bit as we take a look more towards west we'll show you that winter storm warnings and advisories current

kicks this tomorrow night into saturday. we're looking at this really starting to move in. any time close to about 2 a.m. hour or so. and so this is area where we have winter storm quarng this is area we'll have greatest impact and accumulation. winter weather advisory has been extended all the way north of d.c. through to the south past charlottesville and even west wind chill add vitsry to higher elevations that's where we'll see gusty winds kicking in and single digit temperatures and wind chill values minus 20 to mean us 30. high owe thermia doesn't take much to happen when skin is exposed for a short period of time. 4 to 8" forecast accumulations here for south and southeast of city. then we have this 2 to 4" corridor. i upped totals for d.c. corridor because we have gotten information that the storm system looks like it will track a little bit more towards northwest that's one variable i talked about earlier show that the track of that system is
