the 11 days and counting still a lot of things to be done and this is one of the buzzest political weekends of the year. and this is one of the hottest stories at 6:30. tweet us now and let us know what is on your mind and donald trump and anybody else you want to know house # 5@60 and confirmation hearings kickoff with former alabama senator jeff session and also nominee for homeland security secretary general john kelly. their vetting could be kent versusial because of president-elect side stepping criticism and he office of ethics doesn't have paperwork in yet. >> i think they'll all pass they're all at the highet level and jack was saying they're absolute highest level and i think they would do very well. >> tom fitzgerald starts us off with
6:31 pm
talk about we're seeing what eight confirmations going through this week? >> yeah, it's the schedule that they've laid out is very aggressive and it kicks off tomorrow. the issue is this. there's a process by which these nominees surprise mit all the information and go for office and will tell the nominee whoever that may be listen you cannot do this or this and that's the real things. and other presidents have run into this kind of thing. from what we're hearing on capitol hill that's simply a lot of this work is not done yet and that's creating problems when you consider that these hearings are going to start beginning tomorrow someone like senator jeff sessions
6:32 pm
up here. he's been a senator up here for years. but when you plug that scenario to someone like rex tillerson ceo of exxon mobile, well then that becomes a big problem because a lot of what they're concerned about right now are financial situations and complications especially in something like state department. so we went to go see senator ben cardon today he just met with rex till areerson and it's on the senate foreign relations mit de and finance committee as well. he'll have a say in perspective freshry secretary nominee steve and we asked senator carden can you go ahead with all the hearings and meeting you have when you simply do not have the paperwork in your hands. this is what he had to say. >> we have an unpress departmented number of nominees that are coming from the private sector that were never vetted before and they have

circumstances and it's not easy for members of the senate to evaluate that and not easy for opposite government ethics to figure out how to deal with potential conflict. it's a difficult challenge. and it's not right to be forced to go to confirmation hearings if you don't have all that information. >> all right. so he is saying it's not fair. the bottom line is this. this in-coming frez elect needs a government this incoming president-elect noodz a cabinet. if there is any lay it on this remember this inauguration up here is a week from friday at some point they have to do this. carden is not saying they don't want to hold the hearings but what he is saying is somebody needs to hit the fast forward button on getting ethics papers to him because they is a whole lot of confirmation they have to do in the next two weeks. >> back in 2009 obviously when president obama nominees are
6:34 pm
going through tim geithner not paying taxes a lot of questions about that. he ended up confirmed as treasury secretary and mitch mc connell wanted full ethics investigations and background checks done first he was in the other seat it seems. >> also you're right but rs remember some not all those obama nominees got through. >> right. >> tom daschle the former democratic leader in the u.s. senate and tom daschle folks was supposed to be the faeming of obamacare. and tom daschle was going to come in and set it all up and he was going to be i guy that cot got it through. he never got through the process because they withdrew that nomination early on. he was not that guy who wound up doing that and when people are looking at the process now they're saying maybe this is being a little tough on the incoming administration. this is nothing new. all administrations have faced th

at one point during the reagan administration early on john tower legendary texas senator was up to be the defense secretary. a lot of stories started going around round. john tower had to issue a statement he was going to give up alcohol and he did not become the defense secretary. so you know, there's not a history of everything that the president-elect wanting as far as cabinet member becoming case. >> as we said it will be a busy week for lawmakers other capital hill. fitz get inside. you sound freezing out there. >> it is absolutely frigid out here. thank you. >> see you, fitz. >> president-elect donald trump son-in-law jared kushner will join as white house senior adviser he he will take a broad role to give sway. he is married to trump's daughter ivanka

kushner lawyer said he would step down at family rel estate business ceo to take the position. there's a lot of critics saying even if he takes this position and steps down from company it's still a violation of the nepotism law. >> they confident they've checked off every box when it comes to checking with lawyers to see if he can take this position. i have to point this out interesting thing twist we talked about before jerry kushner his father prosecuted by chris christie nor near the administration. >> i have not heard about him in a long time. >> we'll see how that works out indeed. >> as inauguration grows close are a dozen groups are planning to protest. some meant to disrupt the president-elect big day. >> there will be a large police presence in d.c. as well. an attorney and executive director of partnership for

di say your name right. >> you did say it right. >> all right. >> give ace sense here we will see a rather heavy presence here. it seems like this is the situation any up august ration day. >> well you have inauguration here that is somewhat different that we've seen in recent inaugurations passed which is that donald trump name with poll arizeed hidden agenda and there's a lot of people on day one intend to be there to put forward their free speech and views as to that agenda. he said he's coming in on day one and day one tens of thousands of people will be there alongside the inaugural parade route and we're here to protect their fundamental first amendment right to do so. >> let me ask what has your dprup done. we know i checked with the national park service on permits before our show went on. we know right now there's 4 live requests and at this point i believe they only issued six permits. so what is it you guys are seeking for these group
6:38 pm
what have you done so far. >> we've been litigating over right of people to engage in free speech activities on the parade route the days before and after and of the inauguration. problem the national park service issued to itself and trump pick basically omnibus massive blocking application that stops first come first serve process. so all of the groups that want to demonstrate they're seeking to engage lawful permitted acvities why they want permits and given national park service gave trump hicks the discretion in warm weather whether they'll be able to demonstrate. >> isn't that what happens the presidential inauguration committee decides when and where. >> no what happened in years past and we've been litigating for a number of years this is fifth inauguration we litigated is issue of regulatory set aside at thisoi
6:39 pm
now the park service went beyond the set aside face spaces for the pick and put no time frame on it and 14 days a way and we let the park service know they were in violation of permanent up junction some years ago and if they didn't start issuing permits immediately we would have to go fwhook court on this issue. they have now begun releasing permits and advised us others are forth come sfwling all right. thank you for joining us we appreciate it and love to you have back on as we get closer to see how they're doing. >> be glad to. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. >> senate democrats will fight for affordable healthcare agent. >> and ronica cleary has the story on capitol hill, ronica. >> shawn, jim, yes, i'm here with senator chris van holland how does that feel to say. >> it's great to be here i'm excited to get to work. >> we're happy to have you live on the show and i know that tonight senate democrats are planning to hold the floor and really want to convey to the

through speeches but social media why they feel repeal and replacing affordable care act is a mistake. how will this be effective now that republicans have control of the house an senate and donald trump is president-elect. >> first let me say i'm glad to get to work. i hope we started on thing that get people together like modernizing national infrastructure. president-elect talked about that during the campaign. it would be better to start with that. instead rushing to try to undo affordable care act without any replacement. for six years we're told there's a relacement and people are moving full speed ahead to get rid of affordable care act which not only hurts the 30 million americans that rely directly on that for healthcare but also mills yonz of seniors on medicare and we see higher cost and people that get healthcare through employer and premiums will go up. we're here to fights hard to try to convince our republican colleagues that

irresponsible to try to get rid of something before you got a replacement. >> okay reps are saying they want to put form a replacement and even president obama said it that if replacement is legitimate and he feels replacement might make affordable care act better he would call it trump care. did you hear him say that did that make you craneth or see that side. there are undoubtedly nrouz with affordable care act president clintonp calling it cawzy. do you see anything to that voice. >> sure. so, what many of us including president has said we need to fix the parts of affordable care act broken. those primarily relate to increase of premiums within the affordable care act exchanges and we put a lot of ideas on the table i put a lot of ideas on the table and destroying affordable care act in totality is not a way to fix it but a way to permanently get rid of it and in the process millions of americans that don't rely directly on affordable care act for i
