president today defended his actions in sanctioning russia two weeks and tried to make an attempt to the incoming trump administration keep the sanctions in place, he expelled 35 russian diplomats, closed two russian facilities in the wake of a controversy over the russian election interference and cyber hacking. the president tried to explain the moves not connecting them to the election controversy but saying they had everything to do with what the president saw as russian interference in ukraine and urged the trump administration to keep the sanctions in place. >> but i think it's important just to remember that it's reason for the sanctions has to do with the actions in ukraine and it is important for the united states to stand up for the basic principle that big

fitzgerald fox 5 local news. also new tonight, the secret service has agreed to pay more than $24 million in a lawsuit from over 100 black agents accusing them of racial bias spanning over a ten-year period from 1995 to 2005, the lawsuit alleges secret service gave promotions to less qualified white agents and discriminated against black candidates. the settlement will not require the secret service to admit any wrongdoing. the supreme court heard a case today that could have a major impact on the washington redskins team name. rock band called the slants is trying for six yearses to trademark the name. but the government has said the name is offensive to asians. the justices laid doubts about the law noting it wasn't being enforced consistently. also concerned that imposing no limits on trademark names would go too far. so victory in the band in this case would be great news for the washington redskins. back in 2014, the football t

2016 and that really is what tipped the planet over to the warm side. i wanted to show you globally, some of the countries that we're talking about in terms of basically where we ended up. north america, it was basically the warmest ever for north america. and it's just never been this warm since keeping records and that goes to the 1800s, south america and africa were basically -- and they're second warmest, they were right up there in the top five. everything was in the top five. asia and europe had the third warmest year and australia came in with their fifth warmest. all across the globe, obviously, when you're talking about the warmest temperatures on the -- planet ever, all these continents and countries have to come in real high and that's the case. what about locally here in dc? for 2016? ten of 12 months were actually above normal, and one of those may, was just a little bit above normal.
