the bushes and try to grab one of the little girls and then the lady was like, no, you're not going to take my kid. so he pushed her down. they started fighting. then they said they heard a gun go off. >> this neighborhood mom, who didn't want her face shown on camera, says her seven year old son was among the group of students waiting for the school bus, when a man shot a woman at the corner of winthrop and chester street in austin hill. tuesday, around 7:15 a.m. >> so they started running toward, you know, my house, and they were crying and everything, so i just took them in the house. >> she said the kids were frightened, but not hurt. and eventually she drove them to forest heights elementary school. the prince charter county police department initially said six kids witnessed the shooting. but now the prince georges county public schools district says there were 15 students there. >> this is terrible. it is traumatized some kids, really nice neighborhood, but really sad kids got to deal with that, kids running

>> keith grant says he knows the woman, who was shot, but police say because she is domestic violence victim they doesn't want to release any information that would identify her, including her age, and current condition. >> but they did say she was shot once and grazed by a second bullet. >> we have an active search going on right now. detectives are using every investigative tool at their dispose tool try and locate this person. we are not putting out the suspect's name or picture at this time. >> now tonight i also received a copy of the letter the school district sent home to parents. in it it says that the shooting involved two parents, it also says that they're providing psychologists and counselors for the students who witnessed the shooting. jim, sarah? >> alex, a lot of us talking, you will remember a loft folks out there watching, may remember back in may of last year, there was that domestic shooting in prince george's county, police didn't release the suspect's identity. he then allegedly went on shooting spree, and is now charged with killing t

so did you ask police why they're still not identifying this suspect? >> i did. in fact, i asked them that exact question. and the answer i got is that it is a delicate balloon the one hand, they don't want to tip-off this suspect, because they do have several leads that they're working, and as i mentioned, they know exactly who he is. they also say that at this point they don't believe he's a danger to the general public, but as you said, that shooting in may of last year turned into a shooting spree, so they say, it is a balance and that it is at any point they believe there could be a danger to the public, they will release his photo and his name. >> all right, alex lemone, thank you very much. fox5 in fairfax county where a man is behind bars charged with filing shot at fairfax county police cruiser to days ago. in the video, you can see the bullet holes that were in the cruiser. >> fox5's tisha lewis joini

shots were fired. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, sarah and jim, 21 year old brian, was charged with attempted capitol murder also use after firearm in commission after felony. now it started as routine traffic stop and ended here in the great falls intersection at the end there, there is a cul-de-sac, when it all under folded, all happened near major roadway, again, starting as routine traffic stop, in great falls, ending with him firing those shots at a fairfax county police officer's marked cruiser. again, you can see, this is heavily traveled area. now, detective work tirely less around the clock to put together the pieces, and determine exactly what happened, and ultimately, leading to his arrest. he was actually arrested today on unrelated charges and, get this, he was apparently spotted waiving a gun, that's when someone called police. now, detectives there gathered information that connected him to the police

fairfax. one that led to this, a police cruiser filled with bullet holes. you probably have seen these images, just so jarring. again, police cruiser filled with bullet holes, as he tried to escape an initial traffic stop. now, police say, there were three people in the suspect's car prior to the shooting, he and two teens, a 17 and 16 year old, police chief just updated us, take listen. >> we have recovered evidence in this case that connects the suspect to the attempted capitol murder of our police officer. we also have recovered the vehicle involved, and it appears that the gunshots were fired from inside the vehicle, through the win shield, at our police officer. >> reporter: police offer is said to be doing okay, though he is off the streets, that is a standard, what police need now is a little bit more information, to help them nab these two teens

president trump is ordering federal department to implement medial hiring freeze, while some say it is a bad idea, people outside of the belt way are giving it a thumbs-up. fox5 tom fitzgerald on the hill tonight with the details on this, hey, fitz? >> czar is a, back whether donald trump was just a reality tv star, he made the catch phrase you're fired world famous. well, now as the new president, trump may have a new catch phrase for the federal work force, that being, you're not hired. this new federal hiring freeze has a simple goal, folks, to cut costs and save taxpayers money. and at least for today taxpayers outside of the belt way are noticing. >> trying something completely different, something new, and who knows, neighbor will be awesome. >> i don't think he's moving too fast. >> you think he is moving too fast? >> yes. >> why is that? >> because i think he wants to

want to look at everybody's perspective. >> you agree with the hiring freeze? >> yes. >> you think that is good identify me? >> yes, to see where america stands, where we should be actually moving forward. >> here are some of the fact. personnel management says the federal government hired whopping 221,000 workers in 2015. they're over 2.1 million federal workers in all. but only about 15% of those actually work in the dc, maryland, virginia area. there will be exceptions to this. this freeze will not affect the military, national security or public safety workers. but some local democratic lawmakers, and one republican congressional number says may look at the benefit. republican barbara put out statement saying the hiring freezes cost the federal government more money in the longrun. while democratic congressman jerry conally, he told us, hiring freezes sound like a good idea, but in the end,

welcome back, alarming up in where of teenagers and preteens being arrested for robbery in the district, since october. dc officers say charged 69 juveniles with a crime, three of them just 12 years old. >> can't believe how young

that's not all. number of juveniles charged with crime up significantly over last year, fox5 paul wagner joining us with more on this story, paul? >> began listing the ages of people they were arresting for robbery. not something the department has previously done. we began to count the eye-opening number of young teens. twelve, 13, 14 years old, were being charged with the crime. according to the dc attorney general, arrest arrests are up 8%. so we were wondering, what's behind this trend? and what's being done to stop it? >> robberies in the district of columbia have been major crime concern for years. so much so, that last january, dc mayor mural bowser announced dc police would form a task force, that would do nothing but investigate and prosecute the people stealing property and what are often violent assaults. but what's become clear in recent months is that a large number of these robberies are being

>> i think what's going on, unfortunately, is that increasingly, a lot of young people, frankly, are not engaged in, you know, productive activity and where they're idle, they're prone to get together and make bad decisions. >> just since october, there have been three, 12 year old, six, 13 year old, seven, 14 year old, 14, 15 year old, 28, 16 year old, and 11, 17 year old, arrested for robbery. take a look at this. from 2015 to 2016. >> number of juveniles have climbed from 2,474 to 2,636. >> another aspect of our work at the office of attorney general is to identify young people who are involved in non-violent offenses, nonetheless, are making their initial contacts in the system. we don't want those

people to turn in to a recovering door criminals. >> here's what we're doing. we're putting those young people in a diversion program that provides services, needed services, services like anger management, services like mentoring. >> for the teenagers accused of robbery, many end up here, at this facility, on mount olive road northeast, or in a shelter like this one, on rock creek church road northwest. >> indeed 12 and 13 year old, who commit crimes, can get locked up in the district of columbia. it could be that they get locked up first overnight through the offense, and then depending on their criminal history, if they pose a risk to the resident of the district of columbia, or have a record of not coming to court when they're supposed to, detention is available for them. >> by far, the most common age we've seen so far in robbery arrests is 16 years old. and for that age, the attorney ge

a very strong pull. >> young people are making poor decisions, bragging about what they did or what they're going to do on social media. and so, in a per verse way, it is an opportunity for them to, you know, gain some note or eye at this, and otherwise gain some street credit. >> carl says more than 400 juveniles were charged with robbery last year. and his office was able to prosecute 75% of them. >> since october, by our count, dc police have charged 155 people with robbery. nearly half of them, boys and girls, from 12 to 17 years old. paul wagner, fox5 local news. eye opening stuff there, thank you, paul. dc police need your help to find suspected robbery. investigators say the man they're looking for robbed some people at gunpoint last week, then just drove off. one incident happened last sunday

>> reporter: hey, jim, sarah. well, you know, over the past couple of days, since president trump took office, you know, really seemed like there cents a war between the press secretary, sean spicer, and the media, with topics ranking from how many people actually viewed the inauguration, to whether or not there will be an investigation into donald trump's claims of potential voter fraud. now, why all of this is going on in the headlines, donald trump is slowly chipping away at his first 100 days. and the people, they seem to be responding positively. take a look at these numbers. well, reports, they've looked at president trump's approval index since inauguration day. now, in just four days, his approval index has gone up seven points. so let's take a look at some of the things that he's done so far. now, three key issues that he talked about on the trail: repealing and replacing obamacare. another: moving automotive jobs bac

states, and finally, taking steps on the keystone pipeline. now, when it comes to repealing and replacing obamacare, it was one of the first things that president trump did while in office. it was his first executive offer, first executive order signed before he left to attend those inaugural balls. now, the president directed government agencies to scale back, as many aspect of the affordable care act as possible, though, not giving specific instructions beyond that. well, today, president trump met with top executives from the big three, us automakers. now, pressed for those auto makers to bring jobs to america and discourage them from infesting in mexico. we've heard donald trump threaten 35% tariff on vehicles made outside of the country, and trump has offered less regulation, and friendlier business climate in exchange for bringing and keeping those jobs in america. well,
