front of 15 kids. it happened right on this corner and tonight you can see the police are still keeping an eye on this area. and we talked it a witness who says the gunman jumped out from the bushes and tried to grab a little girl standing here. we are told the child's mother tried to protect her daughter and she got in a physical fight with the suspect and was shot. that woman surd vivd and is recovering at the hospital tonight and luckily none of the children here got hurt. >> we'll give you a look at the crime scene it happened after 7 a.m. and police knew who the shooter was early on because this was domestic. and investigators decided not to release the suspect's name and photo until just before 6 . this is what police initially told us about why they were not immediately letting the public know who to look for. >> at this point in the investigation we think it would be counter productive to release that information. if we felt like we had a threat to the public we would release that information. as of right now, we are, again,

locate him. >> while initially police say they did not feel there was a threat to ut public when they identified the suspect they put out a warning that roland eugene sims is armed and dangerous if you see him do not approach and call 911. you likely remember this other prince george domestic violence case in may where a man was accused of the shooting his wife in front of a school. police did not identify the suspect right awe and next day investigators say that same man went on to shoot and kill a random people at both montgomery mall and giant grocery store. prince george county police were not available to talk about what goes foot decision-making process in cases like she's so we sat down with former homicide detective who is now a private investigator. >> with domestic cases they're usually targeted there's usually no reason to think this person would arbitrary shoot people or harm other individuals. althoughs that the unknown. we don't k

not injured we know detectives worked around the clock to put the pieces together leading to landverdi's arrest. and he was arrested today on unrelated charges in hermine done and he was waving a gun and someone spotted him and saw it strange and called mees and detectives there gathered information that connected him to the police shooting. police saying they have evidence that ties him to the police shooting in fairfax. and they gave an update tonight, take a listen. >> we have recovered evidence in this case that connects the suspect to attempted capitol murder of our police officer. we also have recovered the vehicle involved and it appears the gun shots were fired in the vehicle through the windshield at our police officer it's up sitting to all of us as police officers and to me as a chief i'm a police officer and this is highly upsetting
