>> reporter:s those neighbors who tried to help were taken to the hospital for smart phone inhalation. they were obviously released and ok. we're told two adults were in that the home when the broke out. they got out on their own and were also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. sadly neighbors tell us this young family recently moved back to lorton from california. live in lorton alexandria limon fox 5 local news. two construction workers were shot unwounded this morning >> one of the then was hit multiple times and as of this morning still in critical condition, paul wagner joins us from the scene with that story. >> reporter: in this section of the city, it's not unusual to have a shooting. however, here on busy alabama avenue, at 9:30 in the morning, i would say that it is. and that's about the time that the thr

were coming on to alabama avenue. over might left shoulder were talking bound a sidewalk where those folks are right now. they were passing near that red cadillac when a masked gunman suddenly opened fire. let's show you video that was shot earlier today. a source familiar with the investigation says the construction workers are assigned to a job on capitol near eastern market. but for reasons still unclear, they were here on alabama avenue this morning. there were three of them and as they walked between 9th and 10th street near the campus of saint elizabeth hospital, at least one gunman with a mask opened fire. two of the men were hit. one in the stomach and leg. and the other in the leg. the they're man twisted his knee and ran for help. the gunman then left on foot. last seen heading south on alabama avenue. police say the worker who twisted his knee and another wounded man ran for help at a church. assistant chief robert alder

>> the only look-out we have at this time is for male wearing a mask. who was last seen running south away from the scene. the information we have at this time is that both the victims were walking down the sidewalk at the time the shooting took place. we have not established a motive for the shooting at this time. >> reporter: again, some unusual aspects to this case. busy alabama avenue. 9:30 in the morning, masked gunman shooting at three construction workers. and no obvious motive at this time. it's unclear if this was a robbery. we do know that some of the shell casings fell on to a lawn on the other side of a fence indicating that perhaps the gunman may have been standing in the yard. this church behind me is where at least one of the men who was injured got some help. that's about all we know at this hour. we're going to stay on top of the i live in southeast, paul wagner fox 5 local news.

detectiveses arrested eight men in connection with a prostitution wing. at a hotel along washington boulevard in laurel. as part of the operation, detectives placed fake ads on the website back page. the men who called the number were contacted to undercover female officers. when the men arrived and offered money for sex, they were arrested. all of the men face solicitation of prostitution and disorderly conduct charges. police in greenbelt are on the hunt for crooks tried to steal multiple atm. they found a nonemergency medical van with at least two atms in the back. greenbelt police also showed up on the scene and say they had an atm stone back on february 9th. investigators believe they're connected. the district department of transportation will implement a new parking meter rate schedule in two popular neighborhoods

this is fox 5 local news at 5:00. an investigation underway in what sparked this house fire in prince william's county. it broke out on 13,000 block in bristow. thankfully no one was injured and the red cross is hemming the family out >> a suspect is wanted in an attempted bank robbery last month in columbia. police say the suspect approached a teller claiming he had a weapon. then demanded money but took off before the teller actually did that. if you recognize the person in the photo, call howard county police. a $1500 reward is being offered for information that lead to an arrest. dc police arrested this man in connection with a deadly shooting last near in northwest. cook's accused in the murder near a wreck center of the 5700

degree murder. one month into the new trump administration's republicans are gathering for a major convention over at national harbor that could shape the future of the party for generations. conservative political action conference known as c pack is kicking off and for the first time in nine years a sitting president will speak at the gathering. is live at c pack and the big question is whose party is this now establishment republicans or donald trump? >> reporter: well, that is the question clearly many people here are struggling with. they're showing up, they're walking around. registering, they're getting into some of the booths. remember this, though, last year in 2016, when they hell this conference here, they held a presidential straw poll. donald trump he came in third behind ted cruz. of course, that was before donald trump took over the republican primaries, well on

5 local news at 5:00. local news at 6:00 starts now. ♪ ♪. off top following breaking news in the district. dc police right now are on the scene of an accident involving a truck and a school bus. this is cell phone video of the crash right near the intersection of 47th and east capitol streets northeast >> paul wagner is live on the scene with more. paul? >> reporter: just to give you some perspective and where i am, i'm at 47th and central just a oh block off pennsylvania avenue, not far from the shrimp body if you know where that is. a few minutes ago, that bus that was involved in the collision was taken away on a flatbed truck, and it had extensive damage to the front, indicating this was some heck of a collision with the bus and the pickup truck right here in this intersection. now, what we understand is that there were four people on that dc school bus. there was an

two students. according to dc fire and ems, it was the driver, aid and one student taken away from the scene, but we understand that there were minor injuries. as they did call paramedicsed to scene, they determined that the injuries minor and they called the private ambulances to the scene which then took those people to the hospital. we understand the other student was taken and transported by a separate bus, which came here to the scene. at this point, it's unclear how this collision took place. but back here live, let me show you a little bit about what we can still see here on the scene. all of this is the remnants of the front of the bus, still here on the scene. and this room was used to sweep it all off to the side. there's still a light here that came off the bus. let me show you down here, down the sidewalk here, i think this is a little bit of a remnant of the extent of the collision that a lot of the
