primary target has been blacks. that's what makes this so remarkable. black man credited with dismantling the clan in maryland and friending several members. sarah simmons was there. sarah. >> reporter: shawn, the thomas jefferson community theater was just packed tonight for people who came to listen to darryl davis. he says that over the years he has really sought to understand the ideology behind members of the ku klux klan and along the way be friended many of them. it's a remarkable story as you mention the. davis by trade is a musician and he's also an author and speaker. he's written a book called clandestine relationship about his years of seeking answer to this question. how can you hate me when you don't even know me. davis spoke in front of a large crowd at thomas jefferson middle school about how he became friends with head of clan in maryland. roger kelly this happened years ago and kelly has

left the clan. i asked davis about the current political climate we're in right now where racial tensions are flaring and he says this is a valuable opportunity in the country right now. >> this is is the best thing that happened to this country because we have been so much in denial of racism in this country and citizen phobia and all these things and our current political climate is bringing these things out. we can no longer turn a blind eye to it we have to address it and people are beginning to have those kvrpings and come together and talk about it. that's what we need. talking about race in in country for a long time has been a tab auto. now that tab auto is forced to be lifted. davis says dozens of clan members left the group after he met and talked with them offer the years. he says he was able to become friends with many former clansmen because he was willing to still down and listen to them and he says whether he agreed or disagreed, that he would

and try to understand and not so much have a debate but listen and understand where exactly they were coming from and vice-versa. by the way he is also his story davis' story is subject of a documentary released at the end of last year called accidentsal courtsey again out there on dvd and different stations as well. tony, shawn. >> i mean just absolutely fascinating story to think that this black man reached across it and is credited with dismantling organized clan in maryland. how on either did he arrange meeting with the clans members in the fist place. >> well, it was interesting to hear his story. takes long story. but he did mention that there was a clan member that had could to listen to him play music and told him face to face he never met a black man before and it went from there. along the way when he was writing his book he wanted to interview the head of the clan.

she use aid key to get in and then found the inner door just slightly ajar inside investigators learned that all the windows were locked and backdoor was locked and the theory now is that whoever killed mr. jones did it the night before and as they walked out this front door they let the gate lock behind them. >> prior to this taking place there were rumors floating through the neighborhood at mr. jones had a substantial amount of cash hidden inside the the house. >> this is the condition the house was in when police first arrived. there was evidence of drug use, heavy drinking and coins and electronics were missing from the house. >> we have some evil doerss he's here the lord didn't put you on earth to kill but to love you want justice. >> i do, i do. i really do. i know someone out there knows something.
