power lines and trees. >> we start with sue palka and changes we can expect into the area overnight, hey, sue. >> hey jim, shawn, we warned you last night march would come in like a lion. it d not in the temperature department. we had 80 degrees today. with the windy storms that came through with no lightning and no hail and tremendous scary damage. and i have to let you no a wind advisory will remain in effect overnight until 10:00 in the morning. so we will continue to see strong gusts overnight and i'm worried about limbs that may have been loosened by today's severe winds may be falling overnight and watch yourself tomorrow morning when you step on out. all of these dots incredible. they all represent a storm report that we got today of either severe winds or trees down around our area and there's just too many to count. i cherry picked three of the most dramatic ones in terms of winds gusts and quantico, virginia 1:30 storms were

78 miles an hour. category one hurricane force. germantown lots of damage with wind gusts of 66 miles an hour and reagan national 54 mile an hour gusts and as we check right now they're not at those level but are significant and stay strong overnight. gusts between 15 and 25 miles an hour. but that whipped advisory is in place overnight. the frontal boundary has not gotten to us yet. it's right here. and one more line of showers coming with it behind it when we get another surge of wind and that's when we could see a gust maybe to 40 or 50 miles an hour which is why the wind advisory is in place. we'll put the showers in motion. maybe a very quick rum wbl those and more likely just a quick, moderate downpour that lasts on a few second. not about the rain tonight it's about strong front that comes through and brings in much colder heir and keeps us blustery through the day tomorrow ass we head for the 40s tonight. quite a drop from 80 earlier today. but it's all about that contrast

severe winds and we have so much damage out there that we've got sarah simmons in gaithersburg monitoring how the cleanup is going tonight. hi, sarah. >> reporter: hi, sue, that's right. a lot of trees, power lines down around the area. and we're on this occludeded road in gaithersburg where residents had issues as well and but they had never seen anything like this before. take a look. powder lines that came down right here in the roadway. this is a pavement here. actually melted from a fire a 2 feet deep hole this say twig we put down in there. and just to show you how deep it s you can see right here where the power line was just burned an area right through there where it was laying down. and at this hour mind you remember how long ago got storm was rolling in around 2:00 ow so this is still hot i can feel the heat from this it melted and turned in essentially the asphalt to what seems to be something like glass. so just a messndnd amaze

see what happened. take a look at video from earlier from bonnie barker she lives down the road and was showing us what she saw. when she looked out the window there was a blue spruce tree that had come down and huge fireball from the power lines that were here. she called 911 and the firefighters got out here fairly quick requestly and were able to put the fire out. we were talking to bonnie and she was telling us how she had just gotten home 20 minutes before that storm rolled through. >> we were in our living room and something that we never hear we heard twigs and sticks broken off the trees and slamming against the windows and which was interesting sound that doesn't usually happen and maybe heard a little crack not that much. and because we were on the other side of the house and my daughter came to me and says you might want to look out the window mom and we looked out and our road was completely blocked by this huge blue spruce tree and beyond that was downed wire that was live and arching. >>

a party in arlington a week an a half ago and police are asking for the public's help locating him. >> more bad news for heavily scrutinized baltimore city employment. today seven officers were arrested and charge with federal crimes coming after month after the department of justice issued a scathing report on the operations of the police department after the death of freddie gray back in 2015 while in police custody. "fox5" marina marraco with details on the case and how it may impact police relations. >> there was a covert investigation into a specialized unit of the baltimore police department. the investigation happened beyond our beltway but it's raising questions about corruption within other police and federal prosecutors called the 7 police officers thieves in uniform and 190 style gang sisters and allegations stem from crimes investigators say started back in 2015. and continued throughout 2016. including falsely detaining people and stealing money from

records to cover up their tracks. and the 7 baltimore city cops belong to the gun trace task force a quad tracking and removing illegal guns from the streets. they alleged an instance where four of the 7 officers areged a man during a traffic stop. confiscated drugs and nearly 20,000. but the officers only turned over 15,000 as evidence. and vettors althose same officers then went to the man's home and stole 200,000 and,000 watch from a safe and we spoke to former police detective and he said these specialized units can at times fly under radar. >> they felt that gave them the privilege to take advantage from a number of citizens on the street. the problem is that the citizens they were taking these weapons and drugs from they never report today for a long period of time. someone tipped off the dea in te

one of the individual on the street. and as a result, the professional ethics division of the baltimore police department initiated internal investigation and then over the the course of a year they were able to substantially collect a lot of evidence including wire taps in which they got some officers actually talking about some of the things they did on tape. and allegations go beyond street crimes. prosecute rz say collectively officers charmed the department nearly 500,000 in over time. and some of them nearly doubling salaries and investigators con tend there's evidence one of the officers filed for five days of pay while on vacation with his family in south carolina. other officers allegedly fired for over time while drvrping and gambling at the maryland liver casino. >> you're always going to have bad apples with the ranks of employment and any job. but within the ranks of police department xwr is that. police officers are given a lot of autonomy on

while changing lanes along 270 one january night it was a messing caitlin lasquardo was driving behind him and his friends. she pulled over when she saw the car smashed into the guardrail. >> i asked is everyone alive and someone was trying to pull him out of the car i said we cannot move him. >> caitlin a nurse assistant want to be a trauma nurse the training she had so far immediately kicked in. >> i told them i was not going to leave him until they put him on a streper keep breathing don't look at leg and stay calm. >> matt lost his leg and his injuries could have been much worse. >> he broke three vertebrae in the accident. now, luckily it was very slight fractures. she held him c spine position which is to keep him from getting paralyzed. so, she did -- she knew what she was doing. >> matt is avid skier and snow bored boarder and his parents say this accident has not broken his spirit and the 0-year-old is thinking of competing in

fitted with a prosthetic. >> he said it's a leg. he's looking forward to sdiing next winter. >> they will be forever grateful and after track caitlin down through a story that aired on "fox5"they decided to create a go fund me ngt for her. caitlin dropped out of high school when both her parents fell ill several years ago. since losing them both she's been struggling to put herself through nursing school and go fund me raised more than $10,000 in over a month and someone would saw the story helped her get a new job inside a trauma center. >> i honestly don't know how to react other than a million thanks. i just was on facebook and posted a comment like wishing them well and hating that matt is going through this right now being back in the hospital and from the bottom of my heart i cannot thank them enough. i don't have anybody. they stepped in and showed tremendous amount of support i cannot be more thankful. i can just get my degree and show them i was worth the effort i look forward to sine

doing that again tomorrow because the frontal bondy that is bringing those storms through our area and few lingering showers is going to make sure that that all changes. wanted to show you temperature right now still mild 63 degrees. haikers tourp 9 and caller land 58. pittsburgh dropped to 45 and columbus 9 and detroit 33 and chicago 3 4 and those winds are not quite done with us yet. now listen they're not going to be as bad as earlier today when that line of storms came racing through our area between 1 and 3. but late tonight we still see gusts coming out of the south at 0 miles an hour. let's take you to one in the morning we get a bit of surge after the frontal boundary goes by and we could see places gustsing close to 40 or 45 miles an hour. and by the time we get to 7:00 in the morning northwest breezes bringing in cool air and so we're not only going to be dealing with 40s to start out our day on thursday but strong winds gusting to 0 making it feel like it's in the 30s. get ready for chillier start in

>> thank you, sue. >> you heard sue mention strong winds they downed trees and power lines in the area sarah simmons is with us with some of the damage left behind. >> pow rz lines were brought down in this neighborhood in gaithersburg in a occludeded area and when the power lines came down it did something to this roadway. the people had never seen brvrment take a look. this say hole that was actually developed through power lines that had come down. you can see right here where the line it gone and it created a fire. i'll show you the video in a bit. to give you an idea it's hot. i can feel the heat from it all these hours later from earlier this afternoon when the storms came through. and it burned long enough that it actually burned about a 2 foot hole through here just to give you an idea that stick goes all the way down in. there it's incredible. it even looks like lava in some places here where it melted the pavement. take a look at video that bonnie barker

you can see a huge fireball that it created once powder lines came down. you see the trees across the roadway and as well. so she said after she saw that obviously she needed to call 911 and the fire department came out and she said it was just 20 minutes before that she had driven through here before tat storm rolled through and so she was fairly lucky at that point. take a look here. these are actually new lines put in because part of the trouble with this hole that was developed here there's fiber lines that go underneath here. i was talking to one of the neighbors that say it belted those lines that's how deep this hole was. so it was quite a bit of damage on this one little occludeded road in gaithersburg. we're live in gaithersburg, sarah simmons, "fox5 local news". >> and at least three were people after a series of tornadoes tore through the midwest. more than 100 homes were destroyed and people living there were assessing

moment. tulip magnolia maybe. >> i'm exciteded about that and people pred that now that we're getting within a couple weeks of blooming are these cherry blossom harmed by cold nights. not really until the peak bloom and bigger problem for the cherry blossoms is strong winds like we had today. so for the faultily they're not out far enough to be damaged by today's strong winds which were quite unbelievable and took done a lot of trees as you well know. this is good reminder if you have a lot of trees around your house it makes good sense to have arborist to look at them and look at the roots to make sure the tree is not rotting or ready to go on the first gust of wind. i have a lot of trees in my backyard and i have somebody come out and take a look at them i don't want to hear that crack and up fortunately it happened for so many people today. wind advisory stays in effect until 10 in the morning. occasional gust over 40, 45. maybe touching 50 briefly

you'll notice it tomorrow after toughing 80 today it looks like temperatures will number the 40s for kids tomorrow at the bus stop and rather blustery out there. by the way much sunnier day. we saw very little sunshine today and still got up to 80 in the district. tomorrow with plenty of sun looks great. blustery all day just about. 50 to 55 after school and we'll describe after school as being breezy. average high now climbs to 51 and tomorrow not bad at 54. suburbs will stay in upper 40s and definitely feel cooler. friday only 45 with some morning snow showers possible and saturday we dip down to coldest point at 42 and start to bounce back up on sunday with temperature of 45. chilly winds will continue as our storm system deepzens off the north coast and that's why tomorrow will be 20 to 25 cooler than today. so that's a pretty dramatic swing. here's "fox5" accuweather day forecast and again chilly weekend and sunday starts recovery process and 55 degrees
