one on the set it was tremendoue we can thank them enough for helping us to bring awareness to this really crisis situation sun that we have across the countryy >> you've done many efforts todf bring awareness to this in thehe past and now you're bringingngin money into it as well and $50 million even spread out ovee five years is no small change. e what do you hope that that can do to help in this problem whene it comes to either heroin or opioid addictions? >> well, it's a terrible problel that's facing maryland and every other state in the country.ry heroin usage has tripled overede the past 12 months nationwide.e we've been focused on it since e i've been governor.i' been we created an emergency heroin and opioid task force right after i was sworn in at the lieutenant governor he haded when up and we knacked and pushing 31 different initiatives to try attack it from allrom directions and it's just not enough.enou and so this week we announcedoud state of emergency where we're e going treat this just like wetie would any major crisis, becauseu thousands of people are dying. g we he

it's tearing up our families and communities. and we've asked the federal government to get involved and v focus on this issue. iss i was happy to see the presidene mention it in his address theree other day. i got a chance to discuss it with the health secretary sre secretary price and they price t vice-president over the weekendd at national governors association.associat it's going take the federal, state, local governments alongea with community organizations,iz faith based organizations and family members, everybody hasryy got to do what they can to saves lives and to stop this crisis. >> governor i'm glad that youm a mentioned your first cousin csi because i think this is one of those situations where justns ws about everybody knows somebody personally whose been impacted by this but almost that who dird little secret that you don'tt ta want to talk about, and some of that may be because heroin seeme like such a nasty word it goest beyond that because we'recae we talking about prescription drugs here, gateway drugs to this anda i know it goes beyond just the heroin part to getting help on p all levels.s. is that part of your plan now bw pledging this money?

opioid and heroin problem and aa lot of people start with prescription drugs. dgs they're over prescribed orchidse get a hold of their parentsts medications. there's many different ways butt then heroin is readily available and cheap and easy to find anda easy to get, and it's so dangerous now because the drugsg fentanyl is now mixed withed wh heroin which makes it 100 timest more powerful and even more me deadly so sometimes people are e trying it for the first time and losing that are lives but it's opioids, heroin, it's really a gigantic problem across thecr t country. >> i know this was a lesson fors yo wuas in governing as well on the first thing you want to do if i'm not mistaken when youu wu into office was put an executivu order through and i think much t like somebody in washington nowo you learn that it's not alwaysly as easy as you think when younkn first get into office.ffe >> well, you know, we've beenve focusing on the problem but the problem keeps evolving and so our -- our efforts to attack itk need to evolve as well so we keep ratcheting up we're pulline out all the stops now and we'ree
